PCB Announce 20-man squad for T20Is versus South Africa

I would go for this XI for 1st T20 Shaheen must take rest...

1) Babar Azam
2) Muhammad Rizwan (WK)
3) Haider Ali
4) Iftikhar Ahmed
5) Danish Aziz
6) Asif Ali
7) Muhammad Nawaz
8) Aamer Yamin
9) Usman Qadir
10) Haris Rauf
11) Muhammad Hasnain

no way should rizwan and babar open.i rather have haider oppening he will compliment babar in the opening slots

These are the same people who complain that we play full strength teams against other countries’ C teams. Now we’re playing our bench and that’s an issue too :)))

I think fantastic squad all round. The goal is not to win this bilateral series but to develop a good set of players for the T20 world cup. Hafeez’s unavailability is a blessing, as it means we have the liberty of trying one extra middle order option per game and our middle order is our biggest issue right now.

Here’s my team for the first game:

1. Mohammad Rizwan (wk)
2. Babar Azam (c)
3. Haider Ali
4. Hussain Talat
5. Iftikhar Ahmed
6. Khushdil Shah
7. Danish Aziz
8. Usman Qadir
9. Aamer Yamin
10. Faheem Ashraf
11. Haris Rauf

Shaheen rested.

Dont like the oppening pair.

I no your not a big fan of inducting new players until they have played domestic for atleast a season what do you think of danish aziz been inducted in the squad.

Okay. What’s your 20 man squad then? Seriously, are there 20 “international material” options in the country after you take out Hafeez, Shadab, Imad?

zeeshan malik should have been brought into the squad instead of asif ali

my xi would be based upon the 20 wasim selected

Babar
Haider
Husnain talat
Iftikhar
Danish
Khushdil
Rizwan
Yamin/husnain
Hassan ali
Qadir
Rauf

Bench
Sarfraz
Asif ali
Shaheen
Zahid mahmood
Ashraf

I would open with haider and babar if babar does loose his wicket then rizwan can come in.i have gone with 4 bowlers becouse i think danish, iftikhar can provide the 5th bowling option.i would play yamin only if shaheen doesnt play becouse hassan, husnain, rauf would be better at first change.

I would have picked Zeeshan malik as he is a attacking batter instead of asif ali.
I would have also included rohail nazir as a back up option instead of sarfraz.

Over all fair selection by new chief selector except 4 dispute selections. A. Mohammad Nawaz remained with pakistan team throughout Sarfraz captaincy and were given ample chances but he failed. B, Asif Ali same applies to him given lot of favours during Misbahul haq captaincy and was played in every match but failed.C, Iftikhar ahmed Another Misbah ul haq favorite never has performed in big match. D, Khusdil shah Lot of hype created but exception of one good innings continious failed in recent pakistan cup and shaheens visit to New Zealand. These places can easily go to most deserving players Rohai nazeer, Sohaib maqsood, Asif afridi and young mohammmad haris. javed hashmi

Dont like the oppening pair.

I no your not a big fan of inducting new players until they have played domestic for atleast a season what do you think of danish aziz been inducted in the squad.

I don’t particularly like him and think he will have glaring issues against pace at the death which he’s never faced in his life, yet is considered to be a readymade finisher by a lot of people here. He’s still very good and has a good temperament, but he’s not exceptionally talented and will have to work very, very hard to stay afloat.

However, we also have 5 of our top players missing and we’re selecting a 20 man squad, plus we have zero middle order players/finishers available in the country.

I don’t particularly like my opening combination too. I’ve been saying that Rizwan is statistically not fast enough as an opener for a while now (him and Babar will be relatively slow in the powerplay). However he has a quickly improving trajectory and one more series against SA C won’t hurt especially as we need to fit the keeper somewhere.

Once the PSL is over, I expect Azam Khan and Fakhar Zaman to both come back into contention as keeper and opener respectively.

1. Fakhar Zaman
2. Babar Azam
3. Haider Ali
4. Mohammad Hafeez
5. Azam Khan (wk)
6. Iftikhar Ahmed
7. Faheem Ashraf
8. Shadab Khan
9. Usman Qadir
10. Shaheen Afridi
11. Haris Rauf

This is roundabout my team for the 2021 wc. So as far as SA C goes, I’m only interested in seeing how Usman Qadir bowls, Haider Ali bats, Babar Azam regains form, Hafeez maintains his purple patch, and Ifti and Faheem continue to finish games.

I want Faheem to be economical and Rauf to blow away the tail at the death. I want Shaheen to take wickets with the new ball. Everyone else (Talat, Khushdil, Danish) is there just to test the bench.

zeeshan malik should have been brought into the squad instead of asif ali

Both are hacks. However hacks are more likely to be found out against the new ball (Zeeshan Malik) than against the ball in the middle overs (Asif Ali). I don’t think Asif has a future with the national team but would be happy to be proven wrong by him.

We can't do anything Misbah hinted that according to what I personally felt during M. Wasim's press conference as he mentioned something like we're looking for one keeper up the order and the other one down the order and we all know Rizwan played as an opener in NZ

Why ? Who would you have choosen

This squad is very one dimensional with too many allrounders. Azam, Sohaib, Waqas should've been in there, and Zeeshan Malik too, if he was fit and uninjured.

Considering the team management didn't want Sharjeel, Zeeshan is the best "aggressive opener" option we have got, even if his form isn't the greatest.

I will still take Fakhar over Zeeshan ngl but that’s just my personal preference.

Fakhar at his worst is 80% of Zeeshan’s best. But he’s also thrice the fielder. Zeeshan reminds me of Khurram Manzoor, not sure why. Will do well domestically but unlikely to thrive at the international level.

Defonitely would have included zeeshan malik in thier.

As for azam he needs to improve his fitness once he does he will get into the squad.

The other 2 i wouldn't pick

Zeeshan malik did resonably well in the national cup and also did ok in the shaheens games vs new zealand if have no options tben id defonitely have zeeshan in the squad instead of asif ali

Of course we cant but i would stil play haider oppening only because i dont want rizwan oppening with babar

Is the squad going to be cut down to less players, or will they have a 20 man squad for three T20I games?

Playing 11, my guess after Haider's interview today.

Haider
Babar
Talat
Rizwan
Ifti
Asif/Khushdil/Danish
Faheem
Zafar/Nawaz
Usman
Shaheen/Hasnain/Hasan
Haris

Its a great chance to experiment. If Babar plays we learn nothing about the other guys, Babar should be resting for the PSL. What are we going to learn about Chacha Ifti or the likes of Asif.

Babar is a softie, and will prefer having experience around him. Don't think he's one of those with a bold outlook and confidence, who can take youngsters on board and captain them, groom them.

Preferring Nauman over Sajid in tests was a good example of this, presuming Babar had a say in the final choice. For T20Is, if Hafeez, Wahab, Iftikhar are available for selection they will definitely be preferred.

My playing XI:

1. Babar Azam (c)
2. Muhammad Rizwan (wk)
3. Haider Ali
4. Hussain Talat
5. Khushdil Shah/Danish Aziz/Iftikhar Ahmed
6. Faheem Ashraf
7. Aamer Yamin
8. Muhammad Nawaz
9. Usman Qadir
10. Hassan Ali/Muhammad Hasnain
11. Haris Rauf

I'm resting Shaheen for his own good, he played in test series and that's all i would've wanted as a fan.

Very interersted to see who gets preference between Zahid Mehmood vs Usman Qadir. The rest essentially picks itself.

Why are we crying for fatties like Sharjeel and Azam? They need to get their act together and sort out their fitness before being considered for the national team. It’s an ok squad where the best available options have been picked imo other than Asif and Nawaz.

Sharjeel needs to lose 8 kg and he will be in the reckoning. I hope it doesnt ruin his brute force lol.

Khushdil has no offside game when under pressure. He just moves across and tries slogging towards the midwicket and cowcorner. NZ exploited that. Will only start worsening even more now that oppositions will be aware of that.

No Asif Ali please. I would rather take a punt on Danish Aziz over known quantities for this series.

Tldr; my take on the T20 WC team and how this series fits in. Skip to the playing XIs to avoid the dense text :afridi

Our current barebones T20 team looks something like this:

1. Babar Azam
2.
3. Haider Ali
4. Mohammad Hafeez
5. Iftikhar Ahmed
6.
7. Shadab Khan
8. Faheem Ashraf
9.
10.
11. Shaheen Afridi

We need to identify an aggressive keeper who either opens or plays in the middle order, plus a non-keeper who fulfills the same role, plus a spinner plus a new ball bowler.

Best openers in the country (extra points if they’re a keeper even if they’re not as good):
Fakhar Zaman
Sharjeel Khan
Zeeshan Malik
Mohammad Rizwan (wk)
Rohail Nazir (wk)
Zeeshan Ashraf (wk)

Best middle order big hitting batsmen in the country:
Azam Khan (wk)
Asif Ali
Khushdil Shah
Hussain Talat

Best middle order batsmen/finishers in case the aforementioned big hitters don’t work out
Danish Aziz

Best spinners to partner Shadab and Iftikhar (and maybe Hafeez)
Usman Qadir
Imad Wasim
...
Zafar Gohar
Zahid Mehmood
Mohammad Nawaz

Best bowlers in the country who can swing the new ball, to partner Shaheen
Aamer Yamin
Mohammad Hasnain
Haris Rauf
Hassan Ali

My personal picks in each category for the T20 WC are Fakhar, Azam, Usman, and Hassan Ali.

2021 T20 WC
1. Babar Azam
2. Fakhar Zaman
3. Haider Ali
4. Mohammad Hafeez
5. Azam Khan (wk)
6. Iftikhar Ahmed
7. Shadab Khan
8. Faheem Ashraf
9. Hassan Ali
10. Usman Qadir
11. Shaheen Afridi

Shadab and Faheem can be promoted in case of an early collapse, otherwise if there’s a solid foundation laid by Fakhar, Haider, Babar, then Azam Khan can lead the charge in the middle overs partnered by Hafeez, with Iftikhar to finish the job.

This is a team that can take full advantage of the powerplay while batting, recover if it fails to do so, take full advantage of the middle overs (mainly because of Azam and Hafeez), recover if it fails to do so, and hit out at the death.

The bowling is equally versatile. Shaheen and Hassan to take the new ball, Faheem and Shadab to keep it tight in the middle overs, with Usman taking on the role of strike bowler, and Shaheen and Hassan to bowl at the death.

My bench in case of injury will include Mohammad Rizwan, Imad Wasim, Haris Rauf, and Aamer Yamin to make up a 15 man squad.

Now, as far as this SA C team is concerned, we are lucky that Shadab is injured, Hafeez couldn’t make it in time, and Imad is resting. It allows us to check on that second spinner option by playing two new spinners at a time (probably Usman and Zafar) and also try two middle order options at a time (probably Asif and Khushdil).

I would have wanted to try Azam Khan, and give Fakhar another shot, but Rizwan deserves another few games as opener after his previous knock, and it’s a good signal for Azam to get in shape and work even harder (he has a lot of immense talent, so I prefer him staying out of the team and having to put more effort in as that will help his work ethic rather than give him everything on a platter).

So all in all, the stars are lining up as they tend to do with Pakistan cricket sometimes.

My team for the first game against SA C:
1. Mohammad Rizwan (wk)
2. Babar Azam (c)
3. Haider Ali
4. Hussain Talat
5. Iftikhar Ahmed
6. Khushdil Shah
7. Danish Aziz
8. Usman Qadir
9. Aamer Yamin
10. Faheem Ashraf
11. Haris Rauf

I would give Hassan and Shaheen a rest, then bring them in for the second game or in the next series entirely.

In the absence of Azam Khan it’s a good opportunity to give a chance to Hussain Talat and any two out of Khushdil, Danish, and Asif Ali (whoever looks to be the most in form in the nets),

It’s a good opportunity to play Usman Qadir, and if we want to go with two spinners then Zafar Gohar too.

It’s a good opportunity to see who the best new ball bowler is to partner Shaheen.

Quality analysis again mate. I'm surprised you don't have Imad Wasim in your base skeleton line up. Despite his recent downturn in performances in the BBL, he's still seen as a first pick by Misbah. However having a batting Faheem gives the team a bit of leeway and allows you to play a genuine second spinner, in place of Imad.

Also, despite Hassan Ali's good performances, he should not get the new ball. The only t20 new ball options aside from SSA are Amir Yamin and Mohammad Amir. As the latter is now done, it's gotta be Yamin who must be given a run for this whole series. Knowing Misbah, we'll probs get Hassan Ali opening the bowling for atleast 2 of the games.

Thus, Misbah and Babar may play it safe selection wise. That means:

1) Danish Aziz will get one game at the most
2) Amir Yamin will not be given a chance with the new ball for two games. It'll be for one game maximum.
3) They'll try Haider as an opener again, after trying Rizwan in the first two games. I'd rather they try an out of the box approach, like having Faheem open.
4) Ifti will get atleast two games. We know what he brings. This is an ideal series to try the new lads for all three games, and thus id like to see Danish, Talat and Khushdil play all three games.

Looking forward to the games.

Imad hasn’t been turning in match winning performances for a long, long time. He’s a very stable option with both bat and ball and I’ve listed him in the options for second spinner (he’s actually my second favorite after Usman Qadir, incase Qadir doesn’t work out). But he’s by no means a guaranteed starter since I just don’t see him providing us the breakthroughs we need with the ball. If anything, he’s more of a specialist bat in my mind right now, who can bowl two overs and stay economical but without any wickets.

Regarding Yamin, I agree he’s the best new ball bowler option available but I’m a little concerned about our death bowling. Who will partner Shaheen at the death if Yamin and Faheem are the two other pacers?

Hassan might be a bit better of an option because he’s slightly worse with the new ball but much better at the death.

Having Faheem open - to be honest, never considered it. Might be a very interesting option. However, given our inability to really find anyone in our middle order, I’d rather keep Faheem at 7/8.

Lots of opener options like Fakhar, Rizwan, Sharjeel, but not that many options in the middle order (Azam, followed by a gap, followed by everyone else).

But just to entertain your thought:

1. Babar Azam (c)
2. Faheem Ashraf
3. Haider Ali
4. Mohammad Hafeez
5. Azam Khan (wk)
6. Iftikhar Ahmed
7. Shadab Khan
8. Imad Wasim
9. Hassan Ali
10. Usman Qadir
11. Shaheen Afridi

Something like this maybe?

Yours is a good line up. So, so if im mulling options, from your suggestions, a couple of points:

I think Imad can bowl atleast two death overs, if he plays. I actually agree with you in that he's not an automatic first pick anymore.

Playing four pacers in Asia may be overkill, but I'd like to see Yamin AND Hassan play.

If Shadab can get into any sort of bowling form, I'd swap Qadir for a Danish Aziz/Talat.

Thus, I'd go with this:

1. Babar Azam (c)
2. Faheem Ashraf
3. Haider Ali
4. Mohammad Hafeez
5. Azam Khan (wk)
6. Talat/Danish
7. Iftikhar Ahmed
8. Shadab Khan
9. Amir Yamin
10. Hassan Ali
11. Shaheen Afridi

This line up has 8 bowling options. However it's spin lite. So I'd swap in a left armer like Zafar for Yamin based on conditions. Either way that team bats deep and has bowling options galore.

Also, regarding your point on Faheem, he's in the form of his life, he's a lefty, he likes fast bowling and he's not an immediate hitter. That sounds like a prospective opener to me, as long as he's specifically given instruction NOT to slog but play his natural game

My line-up for the 1st T20I cause I think Pakistan look to try different combinations and varieties.

1. Mohammad Rizwan (WK)
2. Haider Ali
3. Hussain Talat
4. Babar Azam (C)
5. Danish Aziz
6. Khushdil Shah
7. Aamir Yamin
8. Amad Butt
9. Usman Qadir
10. Mohammad Hasnain
11. Haris Rauf

When you have batsmen like talat and danish aziz, you know you've got a poor batting unit.

Can't say I'm surprised with the batting on display.

Danish didn't play, but pretty sure he is mediocre as well.
