PCB cancels round-table conference of prominent cricketers [update#63]

Chairman PCB Shaharyar M. Khan has decided to hold a round table conference of current and former Test players in Lahore on March 6 and 7, 2017 in order to seek their views on the improvement of Pakistan national and junior team’s performance. A selected member of Test players will be invited to attend the conference which will be co-chaired by Inzamam ul Haq, Chief selector and Mudassar Nazar, Director Academies. Mr. Mushtaq Ahmed Head coach, NCA will be the Coordinator of the conference.

The invitations would be extended to Imran Khan, Misbah ul Haq, Younus Khan, Waqar Younis, Wasim Akram, Zaheer Abbas, Wasim Bari, Shoaib Akhtar, Aamir Sohail, Javed Miandad, Rashid Latif, Ramiz Raja, Moin Khan, Abdul Qadir, Aaqib Javed, Iqbal Qasim, Bazid Khan, Saeed Ajmal and several others. Chairmen of committees and BoG members will also be invited to attend.

The main items of the agenda would be:

a) Improving Team performance
b) Domestic Structure
c) Improvement of Pitches
d) Coaching of National and junior Teams
e) Encouraging of foreign teams to tour Pakistan
 
Good step, but the list of invitees is a bit too long.
Happy that waqar younus is also invited, he is getting unnecessary slack due to his coaching stinct.

Glad domestic pitches are finally on the agenda. Many of our problems stem from this issue.
 
Misbah ul Haq, Javed Miandad, Rashid Latif, Moin Khan, Abdul Qadir, Iqbal Qasim, Sarfraz Nawaz -PCB should stay far away from them.
 
Why not now?? They should fix pitches first unless PCB is waiting for 2-3 more whitewash
 
We need modern heads , some of these guys have been in pcb positions where they could have made difference but failed to do so. Yah , the chairman wants to make everyone happy and inviting all of them but its not going to bring about any results. Coaches should be qualified and the qualification isnt only that they have played international or domestic cricket , there are coaching courses these days and they are for some reasons.

I think our four day matches are way too short , 70 overs or less overs per day. Need to extend them to 5 days so we get at least 350 overs in a first class match.
 
Most of these people are the problems. Been in these roles for 10-20-30 years. They have caused this mess.

We need fresh blood in the board room or we will keep failing.

These are usually meaningless.

Plus, are they calling younger players to the conference? The guys who are going through the system right now?

Calling people with minimal attachment to domestic cricket (i.e. Imran Khan) or older players on the brink of retirement (i.e Saeed Ajmal/YK/Misbah) doesn't do a lot.
 
They will talk big dreams then go back to work and take 3 hour lunches and send 2 emails in a day. Daydreamers nothing more.
 
Everyone knows what has to be done but the PCB DONT HAVE THE SKILLS TO DO IT. We get this every 3/4 years and nothing comes of them. Another total waste of time!
 
Ajmal, YK and Misbah are current players. Why would you invite them?

Also a lot of these names don't even watch cricket closely. I expect generic chit chat.

Also, Akhtar? Seriously? The guy never says anything of substance.
 
Since they are calling everyone, why not Muhammed Asif?

Best seam bowler in current pak domestic circuit..

This will end up with a tea party - 20 different people with lots of ego, personal clash & main of them are totally out of the game, while some of them had been part of PCB for years - therefore I am not sure what SK is trying to achieve from this apart from another eye wash.

It's good that the scopes of this meeting are identified - now, brain storming is fine but it should end in assigning task force with few people for specific task, may be if required with external expertise. Just for an idea - may be Mazid Khan & couple of younger guys to submit a comprehensive domestic structure (Mazid with 20+ years of county experience, educational back ground & previous administrative experience is the best person for this). Mudassar & couple of young guy (& may be a pro from outside) to submit youth development program. A professional in sales/marketing with couple of cricketers (May be Raja is one) to submit marketing strategy to sell the domestic games better. WY & couple of younger players with a technical expert from CA or ECB to work on the domestic wickets ....

This sort of meeting often becomes a generalized tea party with too many ideas & very little actionable items. If SK, after so many years needs to be enlightened on the problem statements, then it's a bigger problem.

Every PCB Chairman seems to go through one of these "conferences on the state of Pak cricket" - from Tauqir Zia, Shehryar Khan in his first stint, DNA, Ijaz Butt, Zaka Ashraf etc.

Committees are announced with much fanfare but the end result is nothing but hot air.

That being said, I'm glad Mushtaq Ahmed and Mudassar Nazar are there. At least these two have a track record to speak of. Mushtaq had a good stint with England and Mudassar worked for the ICC's Global Cricket Academy for a number of years. Makes a change from dinosaurs like Inti.
 
The only contribution that Ajmal is likely to make is to push for his own inclusion in the team.

Like him or loathe him, its notable that Afridi's name is not included in that initial list. They seem to be inviting everyone else though. Expenses bill for catering would be quite big.

And for Javed Bhai, the only solution to the PCB's ills would be to appoint him as coach or director, or advisor, or manager, or whatever other title he can come up with.
 
Wasim akram should be the first choice to talk to... That guy has great game knowledge which Pakistani team never uses. He is having better knowledge than anyone in Pakistan atm
 
Can we have a live broadcast of the meeting. It would be the most entertaining thing of 2017. :srini

One day we will get a PCB chairman that actually eats and breathes PK cricket but it wont happen in the lifetime of the people on this forum. Instead we have govt functionaries whose only interest is to mint money and gain media attention. Domestic in PK is awful, all these committees know this fact but what has been done? even the balls are substandard but we cant afford proper balls, whilst at the same time, we spend 80mn on the chairman to go abroad for treatment to his heart. Each and every person concerned with PCB and generally with PK cricket sees the board as a cash cow. Nobody wants to actually work, leading to bizarre situations like the selectors not watching any domestic cricket bar the odd match on tv.

To further this point, none of the selectors were present during the semi and final of the premier domestic ODI cup that just concluded. How are they going to make selections when they aren't even going to judge the talent themselves. This is why we keep getting the same names in the team over and over again rather than fresh talent.
 
Most of them are those who give interviews on TV regulalrly. PCB just wants to put them on their side

He like to stay away from PCB & Pak teamas much as possible.
 
No need to discuss. Put a team together lead by Wasim and include ex players like Rashid, Misbah, Mushy, Mudassar, etc. and let them bring about changes to the domestic system. Too much talking and discussions for the last decade.

For starters have domestic matches on pitches that are not damp and low, and for God's sake chose a time of year where every match is not rain effected.

That will go a long way in solving majority of our problems.
 
So we expecting Misbah and his arch enemies on TV to sit together and discuss our cricket? Delusional idea

Of course take their input but no need to have a shouting match around a table.

We're reactive and it has never worked for us. We need a short-term fix along with medium and long term vision/goals implemented at the same time. The issue is finding the right people to execute something like this. An independent body would also help but we know nothing in Pakistan is independent of any kind of politics.
 
Cricketers like Mohammad yousuf who still want Asad Shafiq to play ODIs...

People are generally more respectful of each other when placed face to face.
 
How long has this guy been involved with the PCB before and only now he realises he needs help of ex-cricketers. Any way we always see these statements after a loss. Nothing ever happens. No change in domestic or grass roots cricket. The only positive thing PCB has done in last 10 years is the PSL which was all effort from Najam Sethi.

What is the point of having a BOG who are supposed to be running Pakistan cricket? Why are they emploed by PCB? Is it so they get freebies, yet do nothing and the PCB has to rely on organising such events with former players.

What a way to handle Chairman should resign immediately and Prime Minister appoint a new one look at him he is seeking advise from old ones when he has a full board , players, coaches, no report has made public We should get rid of Mr Sheryar Public should support this otherwise it will be too late these players has the courage to handle

1) if he's decided to start consultations to fix things now, what on earth was he basing his decisions on before?

2) why would someone who used to be a great player be a great at cricket administration and development strategy?
 
Very good initiative by PCB and hope that it will do some good to Pak team and overall Pak cricket . But the question is, will the blind,dumb and deaf PCB will work out on the fruit of this discussion???

Simple question - what exactly are we going to learn that we dont know?
 
I may be wrong , but I recall Miandad holding a big position in PCB for years. He already gave back whatever he could in those long years.

Also, many basic ideas should be obvious to PCB and you don't need any big meeting with ex-players.

He gave nothing back. He sat around and earned a salary. He was investigated and found to be idle for his entire tenure and sacked. Lazy man unfit for a corporate job like majority of ex cricketers.

Surely a waste of time.... Too many numbers to discuss too much things...

Are they going to propose a model in front of them and asking their approval or they want them to suggest a model.
At least divide the agenda for three four days or lessor the number of persons attending this. So you can have a clear view point otherwise we had the habit of talking differently round the table.
 
A way forward may be we get something good for Pakistan Cricket. Praying for that.

The usual recommendations
- gravy train for local coaches
- and play outside UAE because we might tour England/Australia/South Africa once a decade and we need to be prepared for that
 
Owing to the recent development in Pakistan cricket, it has been decided to cancel the Round Table Conference of cricketers planned by PCB in Lahore in March 2017 aimed at improvement of cricket in the country.

Instead, the Chairman PCB will conduct working group sessions with former cricketers in Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad to seek their views and suggestions on the cricket structure in the country.
 
Great!!!! Round-table conference is nothing but tea party.Apart from Wasim, Imran, Bazid most of our formers are pretty useless when it comes for changes
 
good they cancelled the round-table conference... most of the former cricketers would just sit and complain about the system in TV but never come up with solutions or take interest on it...

No point in such conferences when any action is never taken to improve things. We have had such a meeting before where former players had their say leading to no changes for the better. I don't know what "recent developments" other then former players refusing to attend have made the PCB cancel the conference. Nothing will improve until we have a Cricketing brain at the top and nepotism ends.
 
Ex players want one thing from these pointless conferences and that is a job for life, where they dont do anything and walk around looking important.

KARACHI: The consultative meeting called by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in Lahore was attended by little-known cricketers and those who are board’s employees.

Former captains Wasim Akram and Ramiz Raja did not attend the meeting owing to their engagements elsewhere. Waqar Younis was in Australia. Zaheer Abbas ignored the invitation.

From among the former captains, only Inzamam-ul-Haq attended the meeting. The other cricketers were Aqib Javed, Mushtaq Ahmed, Azhar Khan, Mudassir Nazar, and Haroon Rashid.

The meeting, which was also attended by umpires and referees, was aimed at improving the domestic cricket structure.

The PCB said the next meeting would be held in Islamabad and that details would be revealed after that meeting. One such meeting had already been held in Karachi.

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) failed to receive positive response from former cricketers on Wednesday, who were invited by it to advise on improvement of Pakistan cricket.

No prominent cricketer was present in the meeting other than Haroon Rasheed. He had been removed as chief selector last year after Pakistan’s dismal performance in 2015 World Cup and 2016 World Twenty20.

All cricketers, umpires and curators who attended the meeting were PCB employees.

The first leg of the same meeting was held in Karachi which also received weak response from cricketers like Mohsin Khan, Iqbal Qasim and others.

The PCB had decided to take feedback from ex-players after Pakistan’s recent disappointing tours of Australia and New Zealand.
 
Call former cricketers to come to tv shows and complain about everything under the sun and they will be there even before you can put down the phone.


Ask them to come together and devise a means to improve Pakistan cricket and you will get this kind of response.

Good way of filtering out the people who actually give a damn from those who'd rather whinge and cry from the comfort of a TV studio for the rest of their days.

Fair play to Haroon Rasheed who I've given a lot of stick for his tenure as Chief Selector.
 
You don't need too many cooks. Need one man with a plan and to be given the resources to execute it. Problem is too many mouths, too many opinions and too many egos.

This is how modern organizations work. Lateral teams with a single team leader who is empowered to execute. PCB is stuck in the hierarchy model of bureaucratic systems, lots of brown nosing and nepotism. The sir yes sir type of crap was dead long ago.

When the organization structure is flawed the results are flawed too.

Pretty poor stuff.Most of these ex players will cry how the PCB never listens to them and won't waste any opportunity to criticise the board and the team management.Now that the PCB has actually invited them to listen to their opinions,they don't show up.

Change ke liye rotay rehtay hain,karnay ka hota hai toh kuch nahi kartay.
 
If you call them to come and attend a meeting one day before or same day obviously this will be the response from me, you and all others... do u expect them to be free all time and every time....
 
it doesn't need a meeting to know whats wrong with your cricket.Even a cricketer from gully would tell you the issues which haunt Pakistani cricket. It doesnt need scientific cricketers to know what needs to be done. Revamp your system ,improve your pitches ,Start at grass root level , improve school cricket ,first class cricket ,educate players about fitness. For sake of GOD what else would an Amir Sohail ,Misbah or Don Bradman suggest you. If anything take up a comprehensive study of cricket modal followed by India.
 
No former top cricketer would have turned up. The PCB knowing this would have called it off to save being further humiliated.
