• Committee to meet on a quarterly basis, details of 2020’s first meeting will be announced in due course

Lahore, 31 January 2020:

Former Test spinner Iqbal Qasim will chair the revamped Pakistan Cricket Board Cricket Committee, which will meet on a quarterly basis, it was announced today.

Iqbal, a veteran of 50 Tests and 15 ODIs, will lead the panel that will also include Wasim Akram (former captain and now a respected commentator), Urooj Mumtaz (chief selector and representative of women’s cricket), Umar Gul (former Test cricketer and representative of current domestic cricketers) and Ali Naqvi (former Test opener and representative of the match officials).

In addition to the five, PCB Chief Executive Wasim Khan and Director – International, Zakir Khan, will serve as coopted members.

The PCB Cricket Committee’s remit will be to advice PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani on cricket-related matters, including but not limited to the performances of the national cricket teams and their managements, domestic cricket structure, high-performance centres and playing conditions.

The Committee will have the powers to invite relevant personnel for its quarterly meetings to assist as part of its evaluation, assessment and recommendation process.

PCB Chief Executive Wasim Khan said: “I welcome all the distinguished members in this PCB Cricket Committee and look forward to working with them. I am delighted we have been able to put together a wide-ranging, knowledgeable, experienced and respected group whose commitment and involvement in the game is second to none.

“These members are representatives of all key stakeholders within the game. More importantly, and in line with our policy, they are completely independent, which, in turn, will assist the PCB management to further improve the health of the game in Pakistan.”

Iqbal Qasim said: “I am pleased the PCB has considered me for this important assignment and will try to utilise all my cricket and corporate experience and knowledge in the successful delivery of my responsibilities.

“The PCB Cricket Committee comprises members who are avid followers of the game, are on top of all matters related to the game in Pakistan and, therefore, with collective wisdom, will make recommendations that will help the PCB to improve its strategic direction.

“The game belongs to the people of Pakistan and we all are equal stakeholders in this. I think anyone who thinks can make a positive and meaningful contribution to Pakistan cricket, should come forward and play their active part.”

About the members:

Iqbal Qasim – Played 50 Tests and 15 ODIs in which he took 171 and 12 wickets, respectively. He also took 999 first-class wickets in 246 matches from 1971 to 1992. He has previously served the PCB in various roles, including team manager, chief selector and member of Domestic Tournament Monitoring Committee (DTMC). He is one of the executives at the National Bank of Pakistan.

Ali Naqvi – Hit a century on his Test debut against South Africa in 1997 in Rawalpindi. He played five Tests and 115 first-class matches, scoring 242 and 5,881 runs, respectively from 1997 to 2011. He is presently a member of the PCB Elite Panel for Match Referees.

Umar Gul – Played 47 Tests, 130 ODIs and 60 T20Is from 2003 to 2016, taking 163, 179 and 85 wickets, respectively. He is still an active domestic cricket and took six wickets in five matches for Balochistan. In the National T20 Cup, he bagged four wickets in seven matches at an economy-rate of 9.35.

Urooj Mumtaz – Played one Test, 38 ODIs and nine T20Is from 2004 to 2010, taking 2, 36 and six wickets, respectively. She captained Pakistan in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2009 in Sydney, and presently is the chair of women’s selection committee and acting head of the PCB’s women’s wing.

Wasim Akram – An ICC Cricket Hall of Famer, he played 104 Tests and 356 ODIs in which he took a total of 916 wickets and scored 6,615 runs, respectively. Following his retirement from international cricket in 2003, he has become one of the most respected and knowledgeable commentators, and has worked for all the leading sport channels at all the major ICC events.

What an absolute joke. Change on the outside, continuity on the inside.

The only reason I can think of that makes sense is that they're looking to get the departments back on board, with Iqbal Qasim being an exec at NBP.

Like the fact that a relatively younger cricketer like Umar gul is involved alongside old veterans.

"He has previously served the PCB in various roles, including team manager, chief selector and member of Domestic Tournament Monitoring Committee (DTMC). He is one of the executives at the National Bank of Pakistan."

I think it would be far more useful to out line his accomplishments in these Executive and Managerial Positions.

Why not make Wasim Akram the head of the cricket committee. He is far more qualified than Iqbal Qasim, who was a puppet as a selector during his time.

Him being buddies with IK could be an issue. Imran and Wasim are literally best friends

They should have included the multiple times Wisden award winning Pakistani opening batsman (part time all rounder) too, keeps him in a job and also gives Pakistan cricket team the opportunity to play with 11 players instead of 10 players and a passenger.

Good to see Ehsan Mani and Wasim Khan continuing to bring much need professionalism to PCB.

I just cannot cope with how they have transformed the PCB. I have never witnessed such stellar administration before.

We really thought people like Iqbal Qasim, Intikhab and Miandad etc. would leech PCB forever, but then the UK imports and ECB stalwarts showed up, illuminating the rotten PCB with professionalism of the highest order.

maybe they should hire you for your great wisdom and daily insights. i'm sure you would do a bang up job. Make sure you take your meds with you.

Iqbal Qasim, will the torture ever end?

Can anyone share one accomplishment of his ever since he retired?

Couldn't find one decent guy with management back ground, just amazing; he is sop bad, I would even take Rameez back, just barely :-(

From Wasim Khan's remarks today:

Speaking on the PCB Cricket Committee, Wasim said: “It is a new-look, a new-feel cricket committee. We are meeting on 19 February a day before the PSL in Karachi and we will put down three more meetings in the diary so we are very clear on the direction we are taking.

“We have revamped the Cricket Committee after Misbah left that group. It was very important for us to streamline it. I was filling in the role of the chairman of the committee after Mohsin Khan decided to stand down. It is never good governance for any organistaion when CEO is also a chair of such a committee.

“If there are four or five PCB staffers sitting on the committee the recommendations it makes wouldn’t be independent. So, I was very clear in my mind that I will not continue in that role. Now there will be Zakir Khan, PCB Director – International Cricket Operations, to help set up meetings and I will be sitting there as co-opt member.

“We will have Misbah for the first meeting to update on the selection matters and talk us about the performances in Australia. We will be having Haroon Rashid to have a thorough look at the domestic season and he will be updating us on the learnings from this season and how are we implementing them moving forward.

“We will also be discussion how we will implement a thorough report on the status of pitches in Pakistan which was submitted to us by Andy Atkinson when he was here in January. There are a lot of things that we are going to touch upon but I want us to be focus in those meetings.

“The cricket committee was always set up as an advisory committee. It always had a strong sway and strong rationale for why it was set up. It will provide wide-ranging and firm recommendations to the chairman, which he will take very seriously as it is the group which has the expertise.

“The issues which are being discussed in this committee are very much relevant to the people of Pakistan and to Pakistan cricket.”

How will Haroon Rashid, Iqbal Qasim, Zakir Khan etc. add any new dimension to the whole scene is beyond every sane or even blind (literal) fan...it is as if a musical chairs game has been playing since the 80's: only 4 standing memnbers in that game were Bari, Qasim, Inti, and Haroon; rest come and go but 1-2 of these Ghost 4's were always in the administration, one way or the other!

As if they have blackmailing powers over PCB or something?

Outcomes of PCB Cricket Committee meeting

• Committee briefed on domestic cricket, NOC policy, international men’s and women’s cricket

Karachi, 20 February 2020:

The PCB Cricket Committee held its first meeting of 2020 under the chairmanship of former Test spinner Iqbal Qasim. Wasim Akram, Umar Gul, Urooj Mumtaz, Ali Naqvi, Wasim Khan and Zakir Khan (both co-opted members) attended the session.

In this relation, Director – Domestic cricket operations, Haroon Rashid, has been requested to look into the potential window in the next season and update the cricket committee at the next meeting, which is expected in April.

The committee supported the revised NOC policy, while requesting that the PCB should fully and strictly follow it to ensure that Pakistan’s elite cricketers continue to give precedence to domestic tournaments above all else.

The committee had a healthy discussion with Misbah-ul-Haq, who appraised them on his selection policies, performance of the side and forward planning. The cricket committee recommended more clarity around the selection process.

Misbah informed the committee that he had developed a nucleus of players, especially across Twenty20 cricket. The former captain added the HBL Pakistan Super League 2020 will help him give final shape to his pool of players for this year’s Asia Cup and ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

The PCB Cricket Committee met on Wednesday via video link under the chairmanship of Iqbal Qasim. It was the second meeting of 2020 for the group.

The group discussed the appointment and review process for the appointment of the six Cricket Association and High Performance Centre coaches.

The Chairman of the Committee agreed to form a sub-committee, which will work closely with Director - High Performance to create a criteria and performance evaluation process for the coaches.

The committee also had a discussion on the participation of departments in the 2020-21 season. It was agreed that the committee will provide its suggestions, which will be forwarded onto the PCB management for consideration.

In addition to the above, the cricket committee was apprised of the appointment process and responsibilities of Director – High Performance (who attended the session on special invitation), PCB Men’s Central Contract List for 2020-21 and also received updates on women’s and domestic cricket by Urooj Mumtaz and Haroon Rashid, respectively.

PCB Cricket Committee Chairman Iqbal Qasim said: “The agenda for the quarterly meeting was in line with areas that required discussion and to get engaging feedback from all members of the Cricket Committee. On department cricket in 2020-21 season, it remains a work in progress and the committee will shortly forward its thoughts to the management.

“The PCB Cricket Committee was overall satisfied with the PCB Men’s Central Contract 2020-21 list and was impressed with the concept of the Emerging Player’s Category as well as elite category in domestic cricket in which leading performers, who are unable to break into the central contracts, will be included. This will further motivate the youngsters and help uplift and improve the quality of our domestic cricket.”

PCB accepts Iqbal Qasim’s resignation

• Urdu version of the media release is attached

Lahore, 4 September 2020:

Pakistan Cricket Board has accepted Mr Iqbal Qasim’s resignation as Chairman of the PCB Cricket Committee and will now announce his replacement in due course.

In his resignation on Thursday, 3 September, Mr Iqbal Qasim wrote: “(He was a) dummy chairman who cannot recommend a deserving match referee. It is painful to see injustice (being) done to cricketers who have played cricket, fulfill all criteria but suffering.”

The PCB, in its statement, said: “It is indeed sad that a cricketer of the calibre, repute and experience of Iqbal Qasim has voluntarily decided to step down. His services to cricket, both as a player and as an administrator, are outstanding. The PCB respects his decision and wishes him well for future.

“However, it was disappointing for the PCB to see its cricket committee chairman, instead of supporting meritocracy and respecting the decision of the independent panel, decided to resign after his ‘recommendation’ was not entertained.

“The PCB is also at pains to explain that when Iqbal Qasim accepted the offer to head its cricket committee on 31 January 2020, the role of the department sides had already been eliminated under the new PCB Constitution 2019, which came into effect on 19 August 2019.

“He had walked into the role knowing the framework and regulations under which the current PCB management was operating that had no space for the PCB-organised department cricket. Having worked in a corporate organsiation, the PCB had hoped Iqbal Qasim would understand, abide and value the constitution.

“Iqbal Qasim has remained a loyal servant to Pakistan cricket and we hope he will continue to offer his services in future, nevertheless.”

The PCB Cricket Committee, like the ICC Cricket Committee and the MCC World Cricket Committee, is an advisory body. Its remit is to advice the PCB Chairman on cricket-related matters, including but not limited to the performances of the national cricket teams and their managements, domestic cricket structure, high-performance centres and playing conditions. The Committee has the powers to invite relevant personnel for its quarterly meetings to assist as part of its evaluation, assessment and recommendation process.

Iqbal qasim And his tantrums as usual. The guy always had issues and coulsnt take responsibility. He is a ttpical pakistani who throws blames on others and cant act professional in his capacity.

During misbahs captaincy days, misbah needed to drop afridi due to poor performance. Iqbal was chairman selector, misbah would get afridi dropped. Later in the press conference or some interview i think when the non selection of afridi was bought up, iqbal qasim the chairman took no second to blurt out to media that it was not him who dropped but it was misbah. He threw the captain under the bus.
Misbah was left astonish aswell with what this guy had done.

Thus, he has an unprofessional past and did something similar here. Knowing the job description knowing the structure yet resigning with stupid excuses

Good riddance, this TTF never should've been appointed anyway.

Whenever he was Chief Selector, Imran Farhat and Faisal Iqbal were almost always in the squad, and oversaw many terrible results notably the 2009-10 Australia tour and the 2013 Champions Trophy.

PCB again made a blunder in the hiring process. Anyway this Cricket Committee has been a waste of time from the start, just disband it now.

You're obviously referring to Misbah dropping Afridi for the 2013 CT. He deserved to be thrown under than bus from Iqbal Qasim for the way his team performed in that tournament.

Misbah's selections was the main reason why it ended up being a winless campaign for Pakistan. I mean who can forget he selected the likes of Imran Farhat and Umar Amin lol.

I don't rate Iqbal Qasim at all but he did the right thing to name and shame your hero.

Well, that didn't end well.

I'm not sure why each and every regime keeps turning to Iqbal Qasim for various roles. I don't recall him doing anything of note for Pakistan cricket in any of his roles with PCB.

According to some reporters, the department Iqbal Qasim was employed by has let him go and he is bitter that the PCB did not listen to his pleas to accomodate departmental cricket in the official domestic structure.

Iqbal Qasim, Haroon Rashid, Wasim Bari, Intikhab Alam, Taffazul Rizwi, Miandad and a few others who have been in PCB for decades yet haven't done anything of note.
Haroon Rashid is probably the worst of them regarding how he is always there and takes up another post after getting let go off one. His selections in the 2015-16 esp the asia cup and wt2016 were beyond stupid.

hahaha

PCB is the real circus. Same old clowns now come to TV shows and then justify what they did

I feel more than department cricket, non existence of city cricket is damaging for Pakistan cricket.

I'm not sure the Cricket Committee is actually achieving anything.

They should disband it.

One of the worst selectors ever in the history of Pakistan cricket. It's actually good news that his resignation got accepted.

Ok resignation accepted. New position : chief selector. Misbah to remain as head coach only.

This is what been happening for years.

Mohsin Khan, Iqbal Qasim, Inti, Haroon Rasheed.

Keep repeating and rotating again and again.

Not a loss. Iqbal Qasim is a bum just like Haroon Rashid, Wasim Bari, Intikhab Alam, Taffazul Rizwi, & Miandad. Thanks for your service as players but as administrators and pcb Dept officials they have only made negative impacts to the game. They have been tried and tested in different areas of the pcb and continued to be hacks. They are all clueless and know nothing about the modern game and how it’s played and what kind of players are needed. These guys are from a totally different era of cricket and have been obsolete for 30 years but some how always find their way back to some role within the pcb. Time to stop paying them for past glory!!!! Time to move on from these old men!!!! Introduce new fresh ideas. Hopefully Wasim khan can live up to his promise and bring in people with modern day thoughts and ideas.

Didn't want to work as rubber stamp official, so I resigned: Former PCB Cricket Committee chairman

Karachi, Sep 6 (PTI) Former Test spinner Iqbal Qasim, who recently resigned as chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board's Cricket Committee, has said that he could not continue to work as a 'rubber stamp' official.

Qasim, who had played 50 Tests and 15 ODIs, said he felt his experience was being wasted.

'I decided it is best to step aside because none of my recommendations were taken seriously by the Board and I felt I was being wasted. I could not continue to work as a rubber stamp chairman of the committee,' Qasim said.

'I felt they didn’t want to use my experience so what is the purpose of continuing as chairman,” he was quoted as saying by media reports.

He said his decision to resign was triggered when he felt that past performances and merit were ignored while appointing umpires and match-referees for the upcoming domestic season.

“I have always had my reservations about the new domestic structure but when I took up the issue of some deserving officials being ignored by the board they just didn’t listen to me and that to me is unacceptable.” Qasim, who has also worked as chief selector in the past, said the PCB would face problems in running domestic cricket without the participation of departmental teams.

“If PCB thinks it can look after cricketers and hire them without the help of departments, it’s a good thing. But I don’t think this is possible in the long run because we don’t have many sponsors, especially because of Covid-19 pandemic,” he said.

He also felt that PCB CEO Wasim Khan didn’t have sufficient knowledge about departmental cricket and decisions were made in a haste to drop departments from domestic game.

PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani, meanwhile, said his preference was initially for eight cricket association sides to replace the 16 regions in the domestic structure.

“But after a lot of analysis and strategic reviews, I came to the conclusion that six national teams would provide a high level of competitive cricket required to make Pakistan stronger,” he said.

“Too many meaningless matches and events were being organised before, which was costing the PCB a fortune without benefitting Pakistan cricket because the regions were not generating their revenues.”

Nah Haroon Rashid takes the cake for me. His opportunistic game is way better than inti considering he was extremely mediocre during his playing days as well. His selections from 2015-16 were comical. When asked about his selections, he would say the captain asked for his inclusion, the coach asked for his inclusion.
Then just months later after his abysmal tenure, sneaked his way in to become director of domestic cricket. And that is just about his last three posts.

Sounds like he tried to do sifarish for some people that no one listened to or agreed to and so he threw a hissy fit and resigned. Good riddance.

[Don't worry PCB fans, Iqbal Qasim will be back in the near future, maybe as a new Executive director cricket operations or National High Performance Center spin bowling coach! See you then!]

As per report:

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has dissolved the high-profile Cricket Committee, headed by Saleem Yousuf, without any formal announcement.

As per PCB's spokesperson, the committee was abolished a year ago with the governing board's approval, but the details are still available on the cricket board's website.

Sources say that it was made to seal the decisions, but the new chairman Ramiz Raja did not consider its use necessary. The governing board is also being used to approve the matters he likes.

According to details, PCB formed a committee in 2018 headed by Mohsin Hasan Khan. Wasim Akram and Misbah-ul-Haq were also among the members. Their task was to give opinions on cricketing matters.

There have been talks on the inclusion of Mohsin Hasan and Wasim Akram, as the former opener had been making harsh statements about him. After only three meetings in eight months, Mohsin stepped down.

Board officials were unhappy with some of his statements, then PCB chairman Ehsan Mani appointed CEO Wasim Khan as the committee head, later Misbah became the head coach after the Cricket Committee recommended the removal of Mickey Arthur.

After the team's disappointing tour of New Zealand in January 2021, coaches Misbah-ul-Haq and Waqar Younis were also invited. They supported them and also asked them to keep an eye on South Africa's performance in the series.

A few months later, both of them resigned on their own. They thought the nominated chairman Ramiz Raja would fire both after assuming office. After that, there was silence regarding the cricket committee. It was deemed appropriate to use a stamp, although it was never officially announced that the Cricket Committee had been abolished.

When contacted, the spokesperson of PCB said that the committee was dissolved a year ago with the governing board's approval. Surprisingly, the cricket committee is still mentioned on the PCB website. It is unclear why the committee was abolished a year ago and why it has not been removed from the website.
