ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Najam Sethi on Monday termed the third edition of Pakistan Super League a success story and said it has generated an earning of over five million US dollars.

Speaking to media after attending National Assembly Standing Comm*ittee on Inter-provincial Coordination (IPC) here at the Parliament House, the PCB chief said that in the second edition of PSL, the earning was close to three million dollars.

“This time round [in third edition], we are expecting over five million dollars as profit,” said Sethi, adding that for the next PSL edition, other venues such as Pindi Cricket Stadium, are also being considered for holding some matches.

To a query regarding the selection committee’s decision of ignoring talented Fawad Alam for upcoming Tests in Ireland and England, Sethi said the selection committee comprises professionals and they are fully independent to select the team. “I never interfere in the selection of team,” he said.

Talking about the India-Pakistan dispute over bilateral series, Sethi said that PCB had initiated dispute resolution process against the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and is hopeful that the matter will be decided soon.

It is relevant to note here that recently the International Cricket Council (ICC) constituted a three-member conflict resolution committee after PBC initiated a dispute resolution process against BCCI.

The Chairman PCB had come to parliament house to attend a standing committee meeting of National Assembly, which reviewed the financial matters of PCB and PSL while keeping the media away from the proceedings.

The NA committee on IPC met here with MNA Abdul Qahar Khan Wadan in the chair. Sources said the committee discussed the audit reports of PSL I and II. They said that during the course of meeting, MNA Iqbal Mohammad Ali Khan showed his concerns over PCB officials’ move of providing only two-page audit report of PSL to committee members. He said that proper audit of PCB/PSL should be conducted by office of Auditor General of Pakistan and same should be shared with the committee.

To this, the PCB chairman informed the committee members that government auditors regularly conduct audits of the Board and a special audit is going to start in the next few days.

Iqbal also raised questions on selection committee and ignoring Fawad Alam and pacer Wahab Riaz for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England. “The conditions in England suit left-arm pacer [Wahab] who is a genuine quick bowler, so I fail to understand why he was not made part of the squad,” a source quoted Iqbal Mohammad Ali Khan, asking this PCB officials. The MQM MNA also questioned the inclusion of Imam-ul-Haq in team for England tour.

Sources said that committee members expressed satisfaction over the performance of PCB. “In today’s meetings, there were several audit related queries; we try our best to answers all the questions,” the PCB chief told media.

Meanwhile, the in-camera meeting of the standing committee surprised many on Monday. “If the standing committee is discussing something related to nuclear assets then ok, if not then why the meeting is being held in-camera? Why cricket related affairs are being kept such a secret? This meeting should be held publicly,” said a journalist, who reached the parliament only to know the meeting is being held in-camera.

However, an official of the National Assembly said that in the meeting notice issued a few days ago, the media persons were told that it will be held in-camera.

Besides others, the meeting was attended by IPC minister Riaz Hussain Pirzada, MNAs Dr Ramesh Kumar Vankwani, Dr Mehreen Razzaque Bhutto and others.

Some interesting stuff above but psl profits need proper auditing and to be published on pcb site

Time for Cricket Joshila to come in and dismiss this as pocket change

Yes, PCB showed losses of 11.5 Mil USD in 2016- 2017 declared in 2017. I couldn't find any data on 2017-2018.

Wasn't 2015 when PCB claimed a higher profit % than even Cricket Australia who hosted the ODI WC? IIRC Sethi and his buddies took a lot of trips at PCB expense and were getting some PR flak about it, and promptly released a budget that showed that PCB finances are in great health, to defuse the outcry.

I'm not sure Sethi's numbers can be trusted too much, tbh.

$5 million profit on how much gross income? This seems to be just a random statement without providing any facts, figures or proof.

PSL will only start making real big money through television money - when it is based something similar on the Indian model though adverts.

That said I’m not too bothered for now.

I have never been fan of these 20/20 leagues but the PSL has been a bigger success than I had anticipated- kudos to Sethi for that as I admit I had doubted his abilities.

It’s bringing International players back to Pakistan and it’s an excellent launch pad to bring back cricket home.

LAHORE: A 13-member governing council of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) has been formed, comprising seven members of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and one each from the six franchises of the league in order to move forward with mutual understanding.

In a meeting held at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) here on Wednesday it was also decided to form different committees of the council to discuss every aspect of the league in detail before giving their recommendations for the implementations.

It may be mentioned here that it was a long-standing demand of the franchises to the PCB to take them into confidence before taking any decision about the PSL. The demand has finally been accepted after three editions of the league have been successfully held.

This year, nearly a month before the start of the third PSL edition, as many as five out of six franchises had refused to pay their dues to the PCB over some unsorted issues which had caused a crisis-like situation. However, the PCB managed to control the situation but a need to form a forum for addressing the grouses of the franchsies was recognised and has now resulted in the formation of the council.

The council will be headed by PCB chairman Najam Sethi while the rest of PCB officials inducted in it include COO Subhan Ahmed, Chief Financial Officer Subhan Ahmad, Project Director PSL Naila Bhatti, who is also the marketing head of the PCB, Sohaib Sheikh, senior general manager marketing PCB, Salman Naseer, general manager legal PCB and Imran Ahmad Khan, head of player acquisition and management PSL.

From the franchises, Ali Naqvi (Islamabad United), Javed Afridi (Peshawar Zalmi), Salman Iqbal (Karachi Kings), Nadeem Omar (Quetta Gladiators), Gohar Ijaz (Multan Sultans) and Sameen Rana (Lahore Qalandars) will be the representatives at the council.

The PCB also issued a press release regarding the formation of the council which said: “All six team franchise owners congratulated PCB Chairman and Pakistan Cricket Board on the successful completion of the third edition of Pakistan Super League.

“The members of the Governing Council reviewed various aspects of PSL 3 in great detail. It was unanimously decided to form committees comprising representatives of PCB and PSL franchises in order to monitor and oversee mutually agreed matters relating to the PSL going forward.

“It was also decided that cricketing representatives of both sides would meet tomorrow to discuss matters related to the cricket affairs of both sides in order to complement each other’s game development programmes going forward,” it concluded.

In another development, it was learnt that all the franchises of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) have given their consent on not raising any objection over the holding of T-10 league, the first edition of which was held in UAE in December 2017.

The consent was given at a joint meeting of the owners of the franchises and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) held here on Wednesday, well informed sources said.

Earlier, the franchise owners were upset with the PCB for allowing the Pakistani players to feature in the T-10 league and for not raising any objection with the UAE cricketing authorities to stop the league since it had taken away a number of PSL sponsors working with the franchises.

Sources said the franchise owners had succeeded to convince the PCB to not allow the UAE authorities to hold any other league except the T-10 league in the period ranging from March to October every year.

Moreover, the idea to hold Pakistan’s own T-10 league was also discussed at the Wednesday meeting and the PCB allowed the franchises to also buy teams there whenever it is staged. However, the meeting failed to find out any window for holding the T-10 league due to other pressing cricketing activities of the national team.
