PCB refers Umar Akmal matter to Disciplinary Panel Chairman [Post #195]

The Pakistan Cricket Board today suspended Umar Akmal with immediate effect under Article 4.7.1* of the PCB Anti-Corruption Code, which means he cannot take part in any cricket-related activity pending the investigation being carried out by PCB's Anti-Corruption Unit.

As this is an ongoing investigation, the PCB will not make any further comments.

Meanwhile, Quetta Gladiators are allowed to apply for Umar Akmal’s replacement in the HBL Pakistan Super League 2020. The defending champions will take on two-time former winners Islamabad United in the opening match, which will commence later today at 9pm (PST).

Article 4.7.1 read as: Where either (a) the PCB decides to charge a Participant with an offence under this Anti-Corruption Code; or (b) the PCB considers that there are other exceptional circumstances relevant to a Participant (for example, where any relevant police authority has arrested and/or charged a Participant with an offence under any relevant criminal law in respect of facts or circumstances that may also constitute an offence under this Anti-Corruption Code), it, shall have the discretion, in circumstances where it considers that the integrity of the sport could otherwise be seriously undermined, to Provisionally Suspend the Participant pending the Anti-Corruption Tribunal‟s determination of whether he/she has committed an offence. Failure to report a Corrupt Approach is a serious fixing offence.

Brendan McCullum’s testimony in court against Chris Cairns admitted failing to report a Corrupt Approach at a time when it carried a minimum two year ban. I remain incensed that McCullum was not convicted and banned for two years given that he admitted it Under Oath.

If Umar Akmal has done this he should be tried and if convicted should suffer the full punishment.

You are looking at this the wrong way round.

I will simply point out two things which are in both the PROSECUTION testimony from the Amir/Asif/Butt court case and the ICC Tribunal Report.

1. Mazhar Majeed was recorded by the News of the World stating that there were two fixing cliques in the team BEFORE the England tour, which fixed two Tests in Sri Lanka and one at Sydney.

2. He added that Amir, Asif and Butt were not involved in either of those fixing cliques.

If Majeed was telling the truth - and even the prosecution acknowledged that he had no possible motive to be lying as he was risking a heavier sentence if/when he was caught - that means simply that Amir, Asif and Butt were caught while even guiltier men got away with it.
