he Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has suspended one of its national level coaches after a player alleged he had molested her.

The coach, Nadeem Iqbal of Multan region, was a well-known pace bowler in his playing days and made his first class debut for the same team as fast-bowling great Waqar Younis.

A PCB official confirmed that they had initiated an inquiry into the matter to find out if Nadeem had breached his terms of employment with the board.

"Obviously we can't carry out any criminal investigation that is for the police to do but our inquiry will find out if he was in breach of his terms of contract with us," the official said.

Nadeem, 50, who played 80 first-class matches was in his heyday considered a better bowler than even Waqar and in one match he took seven wickets to skittle out the National Bank team for 20 runs in Karachi.

The victim has in a complaint to the police claimed that she went for PCB women's trials in Multan some years ago when Nadeem was one of the coaches.

"He got close to me with promises of selecting me for the women's team and also getting me employment on the board. But over time he kept on sexually molestating me and also involved his friends. He also had me video taped and later kept on blackmailing me," she alleged in a video message.

In 2014, five young female cricketers had accused officials of the private Multan Cricket Club of sexual harassment.

The cricketers told the media that the officials of the well-known cricket club which was affiliated to the district association demanded sexual favours in exchange for selection in the team.

Last year Pakistan's Test leg-spinner, Yasir Shah, was also accused off aiding a friend in sexually assaulting a young girl and later threatening her.

The complainant later dropped the charges against Yasir but a case is still pending in a court against his friend.

To be honest, I am surprised that other such cases have not been unearthed. Maybe this case will encourage others to come forward to.

The lady here needs to be questioned too.

From the little that the above post explains, she was compromised by Nadeem Iqbal on the promises of favour.

She has came out only because she hasn't been selected for the women's team. If she was selected no one would have known about it too.

Nadeem Iqbal is wrong so is the lady.

This is a great example of how little education there is in Pakistan of the impact of sexual assault from someone who is in a position of power.

To call this female anything but extremely brave for coming forward shows we have a long long way to go.

Lets blame the victim especially if it's a woman. As mentioned in the above post, Pakistanis have a long way to go in their path of progression.

Bad news. The allegations need to be thoroughly investigated.

He got a good point!!! Why didn't see complaint earlier? The coach off-course did the wrong thing but she complaint after not getting selected. She is ok with intimacy (wrong doing) as long as it favour her which also injustice for someone has better skill/merit.

I bet you would not be saying the same if the 'lady' here in this scenario was your so called sister or cousin or daughter. Your opinion in that scenario would be very very different

I agree with anonymous. If her anecdote is not lost in translation, it doesn’t cover her in glory. It appears that there was some degree of consent and she went public only when she didn’t get her way.

"He got close to me with promises of selecting me for the women's team and also getting me employment on the board. But over time he kept on sexually molestating me and also involved his friends. He also had me video taped and later kept on blackmailing me," she alleged in a video message.

“But over time he kept on sexually molesting me” - so why didn’t you report him after the first incidence of sexual molestation?

“He also had me video taped” - there was no evidence that it was not done with her consent.

Just because she is the victim doesn’t mean she is telling the truth. Just because these things happen all the time doesn’t mean that it is not misused for personal gains.

PCB did the right thing by suspending him but she is also needs to be questioned and investigated.

My opinion will still be same if my cousin/sister sleep with someone for personal gain instead of using merit/skill to compete with others. There is no short-cut for success. Its cheating from her to overthrow better female candidates.

Awful if true.

However this is an issue that has been mentioned by many over the years and not enough has been done in Pakistan cricket to look into it and investigate it thoroughly.

Young cricketers have been too scared to go to the authorities for fear of repercussions which is terribly sad.

He got close to me with promises of selecting me for the women's team and also getting me employment on the board.

This “victim” is shooting herself in the foot and only gullible folks who always ingest the “victims” anecdote at face value are sympathizing with her.

She is confessing that she allowed him to get close to her so that she could get selected in the team and get employed.

She is now crying wolf and trying or make some money because they arrangement didn’t work out in her favor.

There is nothing to look into this - suspend both of them and don’t pay her a dime which is what she is after.

Zero sympathies.

Sometimes people are in situations where they feel vulnerable and fall in a trap.

Your mindset is the reason why the bullies of our society will always go unpunished.

I am not a PAKISTANI, neither related to Pakistan in any form nor have lived there.

Your mindset is the reason why the bullies of our society will always go unpunished.

And your mindset is the reason why such allegations are misused and exploited for personal gains because the women is always supposed to be telling the truth, and no one gives the perpetrator a chance to present his side of the story.

Stop believing in allegations without any conclusive evidence.

1) As I have posted above I am not in anyway related to Pakistan.

2) I have stated it clearly what Nadeem Iqbal has done is completely wrong. The woman should have reported it then and should have declined the approach but she didn't. She was promised a place in the women's team for sexual compromise and she accepted. It was a DEAL. When she wasn't given what was promised then she complained.

This is the mindset of entire society unfortunately

The mindset of the woke brigade is no better - if a girl is labeling herself as a victim, she must be telling truth.

They leave no room for false allegations and consent that later morphed into harassment when things didn’t work out.

One-track minds.

You do realize that in the society you live in, it takes a LOT of guts for a woman to make any allegations like that. So go easy on her.

Even if not mine, the lady here is definitely someone else's sister or cousin but that doesn't justify her accepting someone's proposal for "continued love" to the extent of "video taping" the act, knowing fully aware most of the time that these things get leaked on the internet, for the sake of "selection in the national team and a job offer in the board".

She gave him consent for IT in return of an offer which Nadeem Iqbal didn't fulfill, it should be investigated throughly but this "holier than thou" belief for the girl shouldn't be there .

She accepted and went through fully aware of what she was going into, there wasn't physical force or physical restraints to justify that Nadeem forced himself onto her while she was helpless and had no other choice but to submit.

She wanted something which she didn't get in return, and now she feels cheated, that acceptable, but not this "mere UPAR zulm hua hai".

If at my work place I am asked to compromise for a better pay slip and better career growth opportunities and then I fall for it, it will as much my fault as her's.

She allowed the sexual harassment to take place for personal gain. Did she not think it was wrong at the time to allow it to happen in first place. Even if she had no courage to report it then, least she could have done was to stop him on the onset, but she actually allowed to happen again and again.

I don't know her background but in most cases in the subcontinent, it is very hard for women from even middle class backgrounds let alone lower socio economic backgrounds to come forward. Even if they do, they are silenced by their families out of perceptions of shame, honour or under threats of retributions from higher authorities.

How will the girl prove her allegations? Does she have text messages, audio recordings, video clips, eye witnesses, medical records to support her?

Nadeem Iqbal at his peak was regarded as an even more lethal bowler than Waqar Younis in domestic cricket. Unfortunately he didn't catch the eye of someone like Imran Khan at the right place, at the right time. He is regarded as a big under achiever

And this allows them to exploit such situations and gain sympathy votes even if their own stories do not support their claims.

You did this with Azim Rafiq as well.

Sometimes it's best to have a think before posting.

That's messed up if true.

Good on the PCB to not sweep it under the rug.

Aren't you a doctor? Pretty shameful comments in the thread if so.

There are a number of reasons why a woman won't disclose sexual assault immediately. Especially in Pakistan it isn't hard to think why a female wouldn't be willing to come forward and state they've been sexually violated. I'm guessing you have never been raped, and thus you have no idea of the trauma, emotional harm, worries about repurcussion, worries about not being believed, or being told you are responsible for the assault occuring.

Just because she is the victim it does not mean she is telling the truth. It also does not mean she is automatically under suspicion because she didn't fit the ill-educated criteria of not coming forward immediately and reporting the assault.

You chose to ignore the most important part of her statement that exposes everything:

“He got close to me with promises of selecting me for the women's team and also getting me employment on the board.”

She allowed him to get close to her by promising selection and a job. This is sufficient evidence that this was a deal and there is a fair degree of consent at play.

This has nothing to do with my profession and everything to do with common sense.

She had no issues with him getting close to her as long as there was a place in the team and job in the board on offer.

Hard to see anything happening in this sort of case except maybe the guy getting suspended for 1 year plus.

In a country where law is openly made a joke of and justice is rarely ever provided (even when it does, it is often too late), I don't see anything good happening for this case or any other future case.

Wow, some of the comments in this thread from Anonymous Guy and Mamoon are seriously depressing.

I wonder if when ill people go to the hospital where Mamoon (Dr Empathy) can be found and ask him for medicine, they are told that they are hypochondriacs and fantasists & get sent away.

Absolutely shocking takes here. Something straight out of high school.

No surprise to see Mamoon on his soapbox farthing at the mouth again.

First of all, if you read the article Mamoon, it says clearly the Police are investigating.

Secondly, nobody should take the victim's OR accused's claims as fact, hence, there is an investigation.

Thirdly, any individual in a "Position of authority" involved in something like this has breached professional boundaries. A Policeman, teacher, manager, boss etc. Hold a position of power/influence, and for obvious reasons can't have relationships with their students, claimants, subordinates etc. This is obvious in any part of the world. Consensual or otherwise.

Whether it was consensual or coerced, Nadeem will be out of a job in any competent professional workplace for "Bringing the company into disrepute" and committing "Gross Misconduct".

Lastly, nobody here knows the nature of this "arranagement". Was it her suggestion? Did she blackmail Nadeem? Did Nadeem blackmail her? Who involved the other people? To what extent was anyone under duress? Was this a consensual relationship that soured?

There are so many layers and facts we don't know, and people like Mamoon throwing words like "Woke".

Police need to investigate, and once the facts are established, then we can discuss the best solution.

What can be agreed upon is, IF there was infact some of relationship, consensual or otherwise, neither party looks good here.

Did not expect this from you man......

What happened here is basically blackmailing, that i will provide favours if you satisfy my sexual neeeds and not report.

Sometimes people fall to this trap. You can say that the victim is at fault, but they are mislead on purpose by the people they were suppose to trust.

I remember during my time in pindi club corcuit, there was a club whose coach was famous for molesting young cricketers. The coach's name was Sir Rafay and he used to promise young cricketers with selection in u19 and first class if they did what he wanted from them. Many would run away from his club and the rumours were well spread but no action would be taken

Would you say those players that did indulge in acts with that coach were wrong?

You have to consider people take advantage of others through such ways. If you blame the victim than your thinking would be same as zia

Both sides wrong and deserve to be punished if the incident is true. Its unfair for other players who can be better than her in terms of talent or skill. If Nadim returned favour someone with more skill would be over-looked for someone who use her body to go far. She was ok to use her body to go far which is totally unfair and crime.
i.e If a college girl use her body to get better marks than deserving ones than it should be treat as crime and both teacher and student need to be expelled for wrong doing.

Also if she has any dignity she should report to PCB and police. You cannot just involve into crime because other sides doing the same.

She did report.

How can you say she was ok to use her body?

You point is that if the move isnt reported intially that means that after the intial act reporting any sexual harrassment move means that victim was also involved....

This was literally the thinking of zia ul haq

U are not understanding the point. For you its basically if not reported intially than any other time when it gets reported victim is at fault.

Investigation didnt even happen and you started blaming the victim

Its even worse than report to PCB if any bookie approach to a cricketer. If they report later PCB or other boards punish them either life ban. i.e Sharjeel Khan

If she thinks she is a lady she should report it to earlier to Police and PCB, not when return favours go wrong. She wanted to be selected in sneaky (cheating) way, that itself is a crime. If the incident is true both Nadim and her needs to be punished harshly. Otherwise, different coaches will use other female players and return them favour and deserving players will be over-looked.

You are making huge conclusions without even knowing the whole story

Becareful atleast.

Interesting comments. You should have been Harvey Weinstein's lawyer.

I remember speaking to a player who played a couple of matches for Pakistan and he spoke about how this sort of thing was going on and had been going on for many years. Selectors, coaches etc doing this and promising favouritism in selection in return.

The young cricketers were too scared to report what was happening.

Zero sympathies.

If you are in a senior position of authority - you are expected to saty away from any personal relationship with a subordinate - even if its consensual. THis is iron clad rule in corporates and sports world

Even if the women was ready to offer sexual favours to the the manager, the manager should have declined the offer and reported to his seniors. NOT enjoy the sexual favours

In India every corporate has a strict rule - if you are in relationship with a subordinate from your company , you should immediately report about to to the HR department.

I am surprised Mamoom does not know about this rule even though he is a doctor

In India doctors are banned from having any relationship with a patient ( even if its consensual ). YOu can lose your doctor's license if you do so

What never ceases to amaze me is how Pakistani men always have their eye on the victim whenever such cases are unearthed. Especially if its a woman that is coming forward. And no its not about lack of education as certain posters have alluded to. It's ignorance combined with growing up in a society that is deeply regressive and backward in its thinking, particularly towards women. Right wing thinking embedded in every facet Pakistani society.

Ofcourse that doesn't mean that misogynists like Mamoon shouldn't be ashamed of themselves. But even if Pakistanis were sufficiently educated, they would still blame women for getting raped or molested. Because unfortunately there is some conditioning that even education can't get rid of.

NishanKonar

Looks like you didn’t read my post. I explicitly stated that both the coach & the player should be suspended for a reason.

You cannot have such relationships with your subordinate but that doesn’t mean that subordinate is a victim.

She is clearly not, her own words testify against her.
RedwoodOriginal

The problem with social media warriors like yourself are that you take things at face value.

If a girl makes an accusation, she must be telling the truth because (a) these things happen frequently (b) it is hard for girls to come out.

However, it doesn’t change the fact that this is also an opportunity for exploitation and that also happens frequently. Women have been found guilty of misuse.

That recent case between those two crackheads Depp and Heard that women are not always right and not always the victims.

This is different situation/context but the bigger point that I am trying to make is let the due process follow and don’t jump to conclusions immediately.

Our first reaction in such instances is usually the same: the girl must be telling the truth and that is where the problem lies.

If we read her statements with an open mind and without pre-passing the verdict that she’s a saint and he is a monster, there is more than sufficient evidence that there was some degree of consent involved at some stage.

It was clearly a deal between the two and she is now coming out for money because that deal didn’t work in her favor.

If she would have made it, you wouldn’t have heard from her.

The difference in this case is that Heard was the abuser not the victim.

Looks like you didn’t read my post. I explicitly stated that both the coach & the player should be suspended for a reason.

You cannot have such relationships with your subordinate but that doesn’t mean that subordinate is a victim.

She is clearly not, her own words testify against her.

Suspending the player would mean that no player would ever speak in the future.

The coach used his position to influence a player.

If you don't suspend the players its gives message to other players "You can be intimate with coach and go far by returning favour from him"
Both committed offence and both needs to be punished.

Just wondering none of such stories come out of India.

They are quite good with keeping things under the carpet just like how they do with bollywood.

And why is that relevant? No country in the world is immune to sexual harassment? We need to deal with the problem rather than trying to hide it.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has suspended its Southern Punjab region coach following a police investigation against him over his alleged involvement in sexually assaulting a woman cricketer.

According to a media source, Nadeem Iqbal was appointed as a coach for the region by a previous administration and the police investigation against him came to PCB's notice last week.

As per the victim’s statement in the FIR, the woman cricketer was a fast bowler in a college team in Gaggoo Mandi. Five years ago, the coach "asked her to come to his residence on weekends", luring her with selection in his team and a job.

The woman cricketer alleged that Iqbal had drugged and raped her three years ago, saying that one of the coach's friend also joined him later in the heinous act.

She said that Iqbal and his friends also made objectionable videos of her and uploaded them on social media. Later, she said the former first class cricketer made a fake marriage certificate and introduced her to everyone as his wife.

According to the statement, the cricketer said that Iqbal kidnapped her on May 29 and tortured and gang-raped her, adding that the suspect also robbed her of jewellery, mobile phone and cash.

The woman cricketer alleged that Iqbal and his friends have committed such horrible acts with other female cricketers as well.

PCB Director Nadeem Khan, after receiving the complaint, began investigation against the coach who was later suspended by the board.

Gaggoo Mandi police is investigating the matter further. However, the cricketer claimed that the concerned SHO was not cooperating with her and that the investigation should be done by an "unbiased" officer.

No the problem lies with misogynists such as yourself being completely ignorant of the fact that we live in a patriarchal society (especially us Pakistanis) where men who hold most of the positions of power and where many of them use their positions to exploit women. This is something that happens in just about every facet of our society and cricket just happens to be the latest area.

Nobody is stupid enough to just accept everything that comes out. If it were that simple than people would have believed all the B.S that came out about Babar Azam too. But when something like this comes out where not only do you have troubling levels of abuse, detailed accounts, but you also have the PCB finding stuff from an internal investigation and multiple women speaking out, than its probably true.

And an important thing that misogynists such as yourself don't seem to understand is that women who come forward with these allegations have the most to lose. Again, especially in our society where they are branded as liars and unfaithful cheats by people such as yourself. On top of that they are the ones who have to live their lives with the stigma of being branded as the 'girl who got raped' or' the girl who got harassed'.

Reading you talk also tells me that you've probably never known someone close who was sexually harassed or raped. Well, I have. And let me tell you that it takes a remarkable amount of courage to come forward with something like this. And if you knew about the mental and emotional turmoil that a person who goes through something like this, has to live with on a daily basis then maybe...just maybe you might have a different perspective. But then again, based on my interactions with you, maybe not.

This latest report puts a very serious charge on Nadeem. The only good outcome of this is that the truth will come out but what happened and how that could change the way women are coached in Pakistan.

If true then frankly speaking, nothing surprising here.

As I have mentioned in my previous posts, there are sexual predators all over the sporting administration in Pakistan. She is a female, but even the young boys are not safe.
Coaches and selectors in local regions inviting under 14 prospect kids to their homes with the promise of extra coaching tips, but instead preying on them is not surprising.

These are some serious allegations. If these details prove to be true, PCB needs to make an example out of Nadeem Iqbal

I guess the outcome of this may depend on who his contacts are and how influential they are.

This is usually the case in third world countries in such matters.

Without any proof you cannot judge him. Besides both needs to punished for using each other for future gain and deprive potential talent.
