LAHORE: Hundreds of talented under-19 cricketers must have been left heartbroken and disappointed due to Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) decision to suddenly scratch the 18 regional under-19 teams - which had already been selected for the upcoming domestic season - and hold fresh trials to select just six provincial teams under the revamped domestic cricket system. The fresh trials will be held at six different centres from Aug 19.

It may be mentioned here that the PCB had set up regional academies at all 16 regions this summer of two months duration each and its appointed selectors had also selected 18 teams of 16 regions including two each of Lahore and Karachi and one each of the remaining 14 regions. But just when the selected players had become quite hopeful about launching their national careers, the new decision issued by the PCB on Aug 16 to cut short the 18 teams’ format to only six, means hundreds of selected players will not get a place when the trials for the selection of the six provincial teams will be completed.

However, all selected players of the 18 regional teams are invited to appear in the trials to form the six provincial teams.

In this connection, the trials for Sindh will be held at the National Stadium, Karachi on Aug 19 and 20.

Similarly, the trials for Central Punjab team will be held at the LCCA ground here and for Southern Punjab at Multan Stadium on Aug 24 and 25 simultaneously.

To select the Balochistan team, the trials are being held at Bugti Stadium, Quetta on Aug 22 and 23.

The trials for Northern Region and KPK are set to be held at the Diamond Club ground, Islamabad and Hayatabad Sports Complex on Aug 24 and 25.

Arshad Khan will supervise the trials at Karachi and Quetta while Sanullah Baloch will act as chief selector at Multan. Former Pakistan player Rao Iftikhar Anjum has been deputed to conduct the trials in Lahore and junior team’s chief selector Saleem Jaffar will be doing the duty at Islamabad. In Peshawer, Taufiq Umar will act as chief selector.

Heat breaking for U19 cricketers that will be not selected for province team based on open trial(when I think is nonsense). How can an open trial judge a player? Will the selectors be fair? There should have been a regional tournament of 18 teams then select the best performing players

What will happen to U19 cricketers that won't be selected for province teams? Where will they go?

I knew this thread won't create sensation and people replying here

This whole system is rotten, selecting players on open trial. How can anyone judge anyone by seeing in the nets? Players need to earn the postion by performing.

Wasim Khan or even the greatest mind comes to PCB won't rescue Pakistan cricket

It should have school cricket/club cricket at U19/U16 tournament of each region to select the best player for that region, then 18 regional teams playing U19/U16 cricket tournament. Selecting best performing U19/U16 to select the province teams

There is no such thing as process or system

Its more shock than lack of interest!

Seems PCB all over the place.

This is terrible.

That’s why there should be more than just 6 teams.

You can make city based teams for U19.

There should be a due process and a pathway to the U19 team. Open trials are literally useless.

Really bad decision. Un19 team had generally been doing well for us anyway. I would have kept current approach for this season or minimally for 4 5 months and then picked 6 teams based on performances instead of random open trail based process. It was fine to do the team reduction for quality at the first class level especially when you have lots of statistical data for team selection at that level but not good to do it at u19 level last minute.

Mind boggling approach from PCB this.

This is really strange. Wasn’t Wasim Khan criticising the concept of open trials in that interview he gave? Someone needs to question him on this. Have a feeling the PM is trying to shove this 6 team concept across all levels and having his way.

Australia has 10 U19/U15 teams. They are not even copy and pasting properly

Imran Khan should have abolished department cricket, and formed grand cricket committee to structure cricket around regions, not shove his idea to everyone’s throat and build a consensus among the cricket stakeholders for a system to sustain over 50 years like top boards do. The whole thing has been in such haste without any planning or repercussions.

SO all the players in Punjab have to travel to Lahore

haan je, where are the posters who wanted 6 teams

Our u19 team is always good with these 18 regional team

This talented player then lost in the system

Now they all will select their relatives on open trial without any performance

The idea of six U19 teams is good.Six teams means you have 132 players(66 1st eleven and 66 2nd eleven). The best players from these teams should be selected for national u19 team. The method of selection is wrong though. The players should be selected based on their match performance not from trials.

They could have selected those 6 teams from that 18 teams tournament rather than open trials, definitely not professional stuff.

I won't pretend to know a lot when it comes to Pakistan's U-19 setup.

It depends on how much talent is available at that level. If some of those 18 teams are below-par then it's best to scrap them. I'm assuming that's the reasoning behind having six teams.

In ideal circumstances, a country's cricketing system should be set up like a funnel. This means the number of teams get smaller and smaller as you go up in skill so only the best get through.

No performance based. PCB is the ultimate joke. Imagine not picking young chanderpaul and Smith during the open trials because they don't look good or conventional looking batsman

The whole system is rotten and we want to copy Australia :))))
