Karachi, Nov 13 (PTI) The Pakistan Cricket Board has decided to review Misbah-ul-Haq''s performance only after the completion of next year''s World T20 Cup, giving him a full one-year to prove his credentials as a head coach.
"The board has taken a policy decision that it would now sit down and review whether to retain Misbah or bring in a new coach only after the World T20 Cup in India," a well-informed source aware of the developments told PTI.

He said that after Misbah decided to relinquish his role as chief selector, the board now wanted to see how he copes with his responsibility as head coach.

"The feeling was that Misbah was finding it difficult to handle both jobs and now with him having to only worry about the head coach responsibility he might deliver the goods," the source said.

He said similarly Babar Azam, who was also appointed Test captain this week, is likely to be given a long run by the board.

"Look unless Pakistan starts losing badly in all formats before the World T20 in India, there will be no changes in the captaincy or head coach positions."

The source said that the board feels Babar is mentally strong enough to handle the pressures of captaining Pakistan across all three formats.

"Even the Patron in Chief, Prime Minister, Imran Khan is happy with Babar''s appointment as Test captain in place of Azhar Ali," the source added.

He said that Babar will most probably have a long run as captain in all three formats as he is only 26 and has a lot of cricket ahead of him.

"Again unless he loses form drastically for a long time, there is no other way Babar will lose the captaincy and he will be leading Pakistan in the World T20 in India."

The PCB has been making rapid changes on basis of one or two bad results and two recent examples have been Misbah relinquishing his chief selector''s post and Azhar being stripped of the Test captaincy just one year after their appointments.

The source said that PCB chairman Ehsan Mani, who is very close to Imran Khan, is keen to see a rebuilt Pakistan squad ready before the next World Cup in India which is why there is so much stress now on giving exposure to young players and resting seniors.

The selectors axed seniors cricketers Asad Shafiq, Shoaib Malik and Muhammad Aamir for the tour of New Zealand opting to pick more younger players.

Ideally misbah the coach needs to be kicked out his tactis will make us lose that tourney but knowing PCB it is typical that they give him the run this the World Cup and depending on the results they decide what they will do

Personally if they some how win that World Cup in India all will be forgiven lol but I doubt it

So we are banking on losing a ICC event in order to come to the conclusion of what we already know. Well played PCB.

PCB should sack Misbah, give his money and find someone professional and skilled. Why cannot PCB sacrifice some money to get better result?

Wasim and Mani talk well but have no spine.

They called the dual role (coach + selector) a great innovation but decided to discard that “great innovation” after 12 months because Misbah was finding it hard to balance both roles.

The allowed the system to change to suit the individual instead of trying to find the right person to fit the system.

This is the professionalism and competency that we were promised. What a joke.

Luckily Wasim Khan will be leaving soon and I am sure Mani will not stay for long either. Good riddance to both.

With the way things are going, I am pretty sure Misbah will be reviewing his own performance after the WT20 and will decide himself if he wants to continue or not.

This PCB administration clearly does not have the guts to hold him accountable in any shape or form.

Because they are lakeer kay fakeer i.e. follow instructions without thinking.

Misbah is not that honest to start with that he will leave the job if his performance is not good. Otherwise he would not be in the coach reviewing committee, sack Micky and accept the job. He will be there as long as he can sucks PCB's money until PCB realize that Misbah is not good enough to be a coach and sack him.

Reminds me of the day when Arsenal extended Arsene Wenger’s contract for 2 more years.

I don't think this is a terrible step. By the time the World t20 is done we'll have a full idea about Misbah's abilities as a coach. The majority of the ire he has gotten has been from his frankly ridiculous early selection decisions. If the incoming selector is brave, he'll get rid of the Ifti's and Faheems and give a chance to the Sauds etc. Then Misbah will have to play the squad he has.

In the mean time, our younger lot, through upcoming tours of SA, England and a busy home season will get more seasons. The greater amount of foreigners visiting Pakistan in the next 12 months will also make hiring a foreign coach more likely, IF Misbah fails. And the other, more relevant back up option Mohammad Wasim will get another season and a half of domestic cricket under him, making him more relevant, if Misbah fails during the upcoming 12 months.

In closing, the big question mark with Misbah on the next 12 months will be the overall strategy he lays out for Babar. Is it the same old play it safe style or will he give the younger players free reign to express themselves?

Despite my personal feelings on Misbah, it is important not to conflate his job performance in one role with his performance in another. He has so far received excellent reviews from players about his coaching and management of the large number of players in the England biosecure bubble, and it remains to be seen whether Misbah can distance himself from his abject failures as selector to do better as coach.

My personal ratings of his last one year term is as follows:
Head Coach: 6/10
Chief Selector: 2/10

I suspect the PCB feels similarly, and wonder whether the reduced workload (not just the removal of selector duties, but also the addition of Younis Khan as batting coach) will help him improve that performance as Head Coach from a 6 to an 8 or 9.

My personal belief is that is unlikely, but it is only fair to give Misbah the coach a few more months to prove otherwise. To sack him as coach and selector at once is also potential for instability in the dressing which wouldn’t be good - especially with the previous sacking just a year ago and turmoil in captaincy with 3 captains across formats also in just one year.

I don’t expect him to last beyond 2021, unless we miraculously make the finals.

That means basically PCB is allowing Misbah to stay for one more year rent free. I thought he had one last hurdle left (NZ tour), but looks like his clock will start after next T20I WC and it being in India, somehow if PAK managing to make SF and that’ll a better result than Mickey Arthur - he’ll stay for two more years. Incredible.....

Must have a blessing from somewhere up the order.

He was a decent selector but too inexperienced as a coach.
I would rather have him spend some time in domestic or some club side in eng, nz or aus in the meantime.

Misbah clearly has an unreal amount of sway with his employers.

He sat on the panel of what essentially ended up being his own job interview.

He has performed poorly in the head coach role so far with underperformances in every series except Bang at home.

He has flopped tactically numerous times, missing really obvious spots such as how to bowl to Warner and Woakes.

Prolonging this appointment to a year has no justification.

So the board decided to make an innovative (for Pakistan) change to how things work and it didn't work out. They scrapped it. What about that tells you it is unprofessional? Do you even know what professionalism is? The fact that they owned up, said it isn't working and went to a different model is the definition of professionalism. You'd rather they have stuck to the new role for another 2 years?

They didn't allow the system to "change to suit the individual", this dual role has been tried in England, Australia, and New Zealand. I'm pretty sure even West Indies tried it. I think NZ still has the system in place of HS/CS.

Wasim Khan's contract is through the spring of 2022. He's not going anywhere soon.

Removing him from the CS role is having the guts to hold him accountable. I don't understand how you see any of this negatively. This is how boards function. They try something, it works, they stick to it, it doesn't work, they move on.

You can argue they hired the wrong individual to the role. I'd hear and probably agree with most criticisms from that perspective. Otherwise your ramblings just make you sound like you have a personal vendetta against Mani, Wasim, and Misbah.

Yeah I know what professionalism is, but I am afraid you don’t seem to have a clue. Allow me to explain with my “ramblings”.

PCB only tried one person in this dual system. So how come they arrived at the conclusion that this system was not working?

How did they know that the problem was with the system and not the person who was given the job?

Did they scrap the system because it did not work or because it did not work for Misbah?

If they would have tried 4-5 different people in this dual role system, they would have been in a strong position to deduce whether the system is functioning or not.

However, they decided to discard it after only one person in the hot-seat because they did not have the guts to sack Misbah as coach.

The weak justification that they provided was that Misbah was finding it hard to concentrate on both roles.

However, how do they know that it is not Misbah’s problem? What if some other person was able to concentrate on both roles?

That is why you cannot scrap something after only experimenting with one individual. If they would have gone through 4-5 people, they would have been in a position to see if the problem is with the system or the personnel.

Now we don’t know and never will know because they decided to change the system to suit Misbah.

There is absolutely nothing professional and transparent about the whole process. There are so many unanswered questions that Wasim and Mani do not have the courage to answer.

(1) Why was Misbah sacked as chief selector and retained as head coach? Why wasn’t it the other way around?

In other words, why wasn’t he sacked as head coach and retained as chief selector?

What qualities did PCB see in Misbah the coach that they didn’t see in Misbah the selector?

(2) why did they jump to the conclusion that the dual system is not working after trying only one person at the job?

With only one sample, how did they deduce the problem was with the system and not the personnel?

They effectively scrapped the system because it did not suit Misbah. They didn’t bother to try to find the right person to suit the system.

(3) Why was Misbah allowed to be part of the committee that decided Mickey’s future when he was handed over his job only a few weeks later? That was as unprofessional as it gets, and a complete goof up by PCB.

When I said that Wasim will leave soon, I clearly meant that he will not renew his contract. He is obviously not going to get sacked for his confused decision-making and lack of professionalism but he definitely should be.

Mamoon - this one I completely agree with you. PCB has lost every credibility (whatever left) in the way they dealt with Head Coach's transition - from Arthur's exit to appointment of Misbah and then appointing him for duel role despite already employed 2/3 other paid jobs here & there. It'll be paid back with interest next time when they are in market for a top name coach, you wait and see.

But, I won't blame WK here, probably Mani partially, because he is the head of an institution run by tax payers' money; should have the guts to resist outside influence/pressure. Apart from this one issue, WK actually has taken every step correct - the revised First Class model is not his brain child; it was a policy level call from above and his job was to execute it; he did that proficiently.

I give you one example from my professional life - for a Govt. policy level change, we had to restructure our Sales channel ... we had hundreds of contractual sales agents and we were asked to make them permanent - that's straight 35% increase of expenses in Commercial P&L. So, I headed a Project to select names..... something I am not proud of even today and I had to hide my face, power off my phone for few days after instigating a termination of 100+ hand to mouth people over night, on the basis of poor performance - a KPI matrix I made after selecting the names to be fitted in... a lot of them cried and I would have joined them as well - these were contractual agents, after 10-12 years commission based service, they left with 15 days base payment. Am I proud of that - definitely not, every area manager literally cursed me not to fight it out to keep them in job (Actually it's my team that calculated the opportunity cost ...). Did I accomplish my task - proficiently & exquisitely, trust me - I got an annual award for that project - it was legally covered (as there was a performance matrix in record within service rules), it was smoothly done without stressing any particular Sales area, and it had the minimum sales impact for a short term.

There is always a hind side - WK is just a paid professional, doing what he is asked to do proficiently.

Im hoping the PCB will review the woeful commentary in Pakistan games.

If they're going to have English speaking commentators, get people who can speak English. (Sorry Ramiz, you've been the same since the 90s)

Keeping International audience entertained and informed may keep Misbah and Co. On their tours.
