Faf du Plessis nominates for KFC BBL|12 Draft

Former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis has signaled his availability for this summer’s KFC Big Bash League, nominating himself for the inaugural KFC BBL|12 Draft.

As announced last week, the Draft will revolutionise the recruitment of overseas stars to the KFC BBL. Each club will have the opportunity to recruit up to three primary overseas players, including a number of T20 cricket’s biggest names. Read more here.

The first of those to enter the Draft is du Plessis, one of cricket’s most respected global figures. His standing as a world class top order batter was earned throughout an international career in which he amassed 11,198 runs, before becoming highly sought after on the global T20 circuit. At 37, he also remains one of the world’s most athletic fielders and revered on-field leaders, including as captain of the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League.

Du Plessis will return to the KFC BBL for the first time in a decade if drafted. He played just one match in BBL|02, signed by the Melbourne Renegades after his player of the match performance on Test debut against Australia days earlier.

Alongside du Plessis, the League has also welcomed nominations from three other former Proteas:

Rilee Rossouw, a stylish left-hand bat and another a former Renegade, having played seven matches in KFC BBL|10. Rossouw also boasts a wealth of T20 league experience and is well known to many Australian players for his match-winning 122 in his final international appearance, an ODI in 2016.

David Wiese, an experienced all-rounder who turned out for Namibia in the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup after not playing for South Africa since 2016. He boasts a formidable T20 record, with 3324 runs at a strike rate of 142.47 and 229 wickets in 294 matches.

Marchant de Lange, an imposing fast bowler who will give his KFC BBL club an injection of pace if selected on Draft night. Standing at two metres tall, de Lange has snared 659 career wickets across all formats, including a recent Vitality Blast spell of 4/9 in three brutal overs.

All players will be required to confirm their specific availability dates for part or all of the KFC BBL season prior to Draft nominations closing. This includes players who also have commitments to Cricket South Africa’s new T20 league.

Alistair Dobson, Cricket Australia’s General Manager of Big Bash Leagues, said:

“The League is delighted to receive nominations from Faf du Plessis, Marchant de Lange, Rilee Rossouw and David Wiese to enter the KFC BBL|12 Draft.

“The nomination of a player of Faf’s calibre is not only an endorsement of the BBL Draft, but also of the BBL’s unique offering as a great experience for players and their families in the Australian summer. We believe it is the players’ favourite competition.

“We thank these players for making themselves available for the KFC BBL and look forward to announcing further nominations soon.”

Trent Woodhill, Big Bash Leagues’ Player Acquisition and Cricket Consultant, said:

“We’re thrilled to welcome Faf, Marchant, Rilee and David to the KFC BBL – all game-changing players with a wealth of experience at international and franchise level.

“The Draft has injected significant excitement and interest into the global T20 market. We remain engaged in positive discussions with a large number players and their agents, who are all excited by the prospects of showcasing their talents to the world this BBL season.”

KFC BBL|12 DRAFT

The KFC BBL|12 Draft is an exciting new addition this season, helping bring some of the biggest names in T20 cricket to the BBL.

Details regarding the Draft, including date and how to watch, will be released soon.

KFC BBL|12 Draft order of selections, date and broadcast details confirmed

The order of selections has been confirmed for the KFC BBL|12 Draft for overseas players, to be held on Sunday, August 28 and broadcast on Fox Cricket, available on Foxtel and Kayo Sports.

Order of selections

Two weighted lotteries were undertaken on Wednesday, July 20, in the presence of authorised Club officials, the BBL Draft Committee, CA security & integrity and an independent scrutineer to determine the order of selections.

After missing the KFC BBL|11 Finals, Melbourne Stars (one entry), Brisbane Heat (two entries) and Melbourne Renegades (three entries) were placed in the first lottery. The remaining Clubs, all of which played Finals last season, were entered in the second lottery.

The order of selections for the KFC BBL|12 Draft was ratified following the weighted lotteries and will be as follows:

Melbourne Renegades
Melbourne Stars
Brisbane Heat
Sydney Sixers
Adelaide Strikers
Perth Scorchers
Sydney Thunder
Hobart Hurricanes

As revealed in June, the Draft will include four rounds, with clubs to select a minimum of two and maximum of three players in total. Clubs must pass in at least one round. Round 1 will follow the order as stated above, with Rounds 2 to 4 to follow a snaking order.

Broadcast details

The League is also delighted to confirm broadcast partner Fox Sports Australia will show the Draft on Fox Cricket, available on Foxtel channel 501 and also streaming platform Kayo Sports. The Draft will be held on Sunday, August 28, following Australia’s Dettol ODI Series clash with Zimbabwe in Townsville.

The Draft will be hosted by an all-star Fox Cricket panel of Adam Gilchrist, Michael Hussey, Darren Lehmann, Kath Loughnan and Mark Howard, who will take fans closer than ever before to the key decision makers at Clubs in real time.

Matt Weiss, Fox Cricket General Manager, said:

“The inaugural BBL Draft is going to be a fantastic addition and we couldn’t be more excited.

“Fox Cricket’s the only place fans can watch every ball of every game of the BBL and T20 World Cup this year and the Draft is a great way to kick-off our biggest cricket season since the start of Fox Cricket five years ago.”

Alistair Dobson, Cricket Australia’s General Manager of Big Bash Leagues, said:

“With a little over five weeks until the inaugural Draft for overseas players, we are delighted to have locked in key details regarding the order of selections, date and broadcast details today.

“The League and all Clubs are grateful to Foxtel for their ongoing commitment to the Big Bash Leagues, including supporting the Draft by leading on broadcast and production.

“The determination of the order of selections is also a significant development, providing certainty to key Club staff including list managers and coaches as they refine their Draft strategies.

“We look forward to working with Clubs, players and agents worldwide to continue facilitating discussions to bring world-class talent to the KFC BBL.”

Australia batsman Usman Khawaja says the nation’s Big Bash League (BBL) needs to open up to private ownership if it is to survive in an increasingly crowded market for T20 cricket content.

The BBL, which runs from December to early-February 2023, will clash with South Africa’s new six-team T20 tournament starting in January.

Indian Premier League (IPL) team owners bought all six franchises in the South African league but the BBL’s eight teams are owned by governing body Cricket Australia and run by state associations.

A new league in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), also backed by IPL money, is scheduled to launch in January, setting the stage for intense battles for the world’s top players.

Khawaja said the BBL faced a “fork in the road” over the next year or two as competition heats up.

“There’s a lot of cogs that make the decisions but personally you shouldn’t be afraid of moving the game forward even if that means that you let go a little bit on the reins,” Khawaja told reporters on Friday.

“There are other tournaments starting up that are privatised.

“If you don’t keep up with that, and there’s a small window for the Big Bash to privatise in the next few years, and I’m afraid if we don’t do that we’ll fall behind.”

A number of top players have been nominated for the BBL’s inaugural draft, including star Afghan spinner Rashid Khan and West Indian T20 stalwarts Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Bravo.

But Khawaja said others were steering clear.

“I’ve talked to a couple and they’ve not listed for the draft because they want to spend Christmas at home and then will go and play in the UAE,” he said.

“That’s a red flag for me already.”

Pakistani T20 superstars Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan and Shaheen Shah Afridi are set to become headline names in the BBL’s inaugural draft for international players, reports the Daily Telegraph’s Ben Horne.

Azam and Rizwan are the two highest-ranked players in T20 international cricket and are set to light up the league alongside fellow international stars Rashid Khan, Faf Du Plessis and Dwayne Bravo.

There are believed to have been 170 nominations for the BBL draft so far, yet only 28 are public.

Further big names include Kieron Pollard (West Indies), Rilee Rossouw (South Africa) and Colin Munro (New Zealand).

The Melbourne Renegades drew pick one in a lottery held yesterday, with the BBL|12 draft to be held on August 28.

The draft will be broadcast on Fox Sports and Kayo, with Fox Cricket's Adam Gilchrist, Michael Hussey, Darren Lehmann, Kath Loughnan and Mark Howard to host.

The international draft is hoped to reinspire interest in the BBL which has faced declining ratings and standards in recent years.

But can Pak players participate in the BBL?

==

BBL 12 is scheduled from December 13, 2022 to February 4, 2023. However, England and New Zealand are scheduled to tour Pakistan for the Test series respectively between November-December 2022 and January 2023.

Thereafter, Pakistani players will start preparing for their own Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 8. Reportedly, PSL 8 will also take place before its actual time as Pakistan are scheduled to tour Afghanistan in February-March 2023 as per FTP 2018 to 2023.

BBL Media have written to PakPassion:

Some outlets have speculated on Pakistan players entering the BBL Draft but we have not announced any players from Pakistan.

English stars to descend on KFC BBL|12 as 70 Draft nominations received

A massive 70 players from England have stated their intentions to spend a summer Down Under by nominating for the KFC BBL|12 Draft.

The inaugural Draft for overseas players has attracted some of cricket’s biggest names and now many of England’s short form specialists have thrown their names into contention.

The list is headlined by T20 powerhouse Liam Livingstone, who has fast become one of the world’s most sought-after short form batters. Equally adept at the top or in the middle order, Livingstone boasts a T20 career strike rate of 146.57 for club and country. He also has seven BBL half centuries to his name from two previous campaigns with the Perth Scorchers.

While Livingstone is not able to be retained by the Scorchers, having last played there two seasons ago, there are nine English Draft nominees eligible for retention by their KFC BBL|11 clubs:

Joe Clarke (Melbourne Stars)
Ian Cockbain (Adelaide Strikers)
Jordan Cox (Hobart Hurricanes)
Laurie Evans (Perth Scorchers)
George Garton (Adelaide Strikers)
Alex Hales (Sydney Thunder)
Tymal Mills (Perth Scorchers)
Reece Topley (Melbourne Renegades)
James Vince (Sydney Sixers)

Among them, Hales is the leading run-scorer among overseas players in the BBL’s history with 1857 runs in 60 matches, with Vince third on that list with 1427 in 54 outings. Evans was the player of the match in the KFC BBL|11 Final after leading the Scorchers to victory with 76 not out, an honour which went to Vince the year prior.

A host of recent England representatives will be hoping for their first taste of Big Bash action this summer. These include Test number three Ollie Pope, aggressive leg-spinner Matt Parkinson and exciting quicks Brydon Carse and Matthew Potts.

For clarity, Carse is not eligible for retention by the Scorchers despite being initially signed for KFC BBL|11. He was ruled out with injury prior to the tournament and did not play a game for the Club.

In addition, Jake Ball (formerly Sydney Sixers), Danny Briggs (Adelaide Strikers), Richard Gleeson (Melbourne Renegades), Lewis Gregory (Brisbane Heat) and Benny Howell (Melbourne Renegades) have all nominated for a return to the Big Bash having been absent last season. They too are not eligible for retention.

A full list of all nominations is below.

Trent Woodhill, Big Bash Leagues’ Player Acquisition and Cricket Consultant, said:

“The standard of nominations for the KFC BBL|12 Draft from England is exceptional, headlined by the likes of Liam Livingstone and Alex Hales, two of the world’s leading T20 players.

“The list is also filled with players who have shown outstanding recent form in other recent domestic competitions. We know England is a proven producer of top T20 talent.

“We look forward to some robust discussion around these players on Draft night, particularly in regard to the retention picks, with a number of those eligible making a strong case for selection.”

PCB denying NOCs to contracted and non-contracted players for the BBL is yet another idiotic decision by the PRaja regime with zero thought process behind it.

Not every player is lucky enough to have a PCB central contract. Leagues like these are the only way for them to make some good money. PCB coming up with blanket bans like these not only go against its own 'PSL plus one' policy but will also cause massive resentment among the players.

Ultimately, the only solution is to form a player's union. PCB shouldn't be allowed to play with the careers of cricketers like this. Since its already obvious that they have no consistency when it comes to coming up with policies.

means no pak player in uae t20 league/csa t20 league as well?

This will only lead to more freelance cricketers.

Those who are not centrally contracted should be allowed to choose whatever league they want to play irrespective of psl schedule.

Ending weeks of speculation on whether he would play the Big Bash League (BBL), Australia opening batter David Warner on Sunday signed a two-year deal with Sydney Thunder. Warner will join the Thunder after his international commitments end at the completion of January's Sydney Test and could be available for as many as five regular season matches - including the summer's second blockbuster Sydney Smash against the Sixers - and the finals.

The Thunder play the reigning champion Perth Scorchers at Sydney Showground Stadium on January 13, before matches at Blundstone Arena against the Hurricanes (January 15), Manuka Oval against the Renegades on January 19, the Sixers at the SCG on January 21 and the Stars at the MCG on January 25.

It will be the third time the swashbuckling opener has represented the Thunder Nation, having previously played just one game in both BBL|01 and BBL|03.

The veteran of 96 Tests, 133 ODI's and 91 T20 matches for Australia, said he was determined to give back to the game.

"I'm really excited to get back to the Big Bash with the club where I started. I care deeply about the game, and I am conscious that the conditions that I enjoy as a professional cricketer have largely come from other senior players who have come before me," said Warner in an official release.

"That is how the game is structured and I understand that my contribution to the future of the BBL will hopefully benefit the next generation of players long after I am retired," he added.

Warner also said his family had influenced his decision to return to the BBL. "My 'girls' have told me that they'd love to watch me play at home and in the BBL," he said.

"It will be great for us to be a part of the BBL as a family, and it is something that I am really looking forward to sharing with them," he added.

Twelve Platinum players, over 100 new names confirmed for KFC BBL|12 Draft

Twelve world-class players have been given Platinum status in the KFC BBL|12 Draft, with an updated list of nominees also announced today.

Total nominations for Sunday’s Draft, to be broadcast live and exclusive on Fox Cricket, available on Foxtel channel 501 and Kayo Sports from 6:30pm AEST, now stands at 279 players.

The list is headlined by the 12 Platinum players, who themselves form an outstanding and balanced T20 squad. The Platinum players in ‘batting order’ are:

Faf du Plessis (South Africa)
Jason Roy (England)
Liam Livingstone (England)
Sam Billings (England)
Kieron Pollard (West Indies)
Andre Russell (West Indies)
David Willey (England)
Shadab Khan (Pakistan)
Dwayne Bravo (West Indies)
Rashid Khan (Afghanistan)
Chris Jordan (England)
Trent Boult (New Zealand)

Roy, Billings, Russell, Willey, Shadab Khan, Jordan and Boult all appear on the KFC BBL|12 Draft nominations list for the first time. They and their fellow Platinum players are the only players eligible for selection in the first round of the Draft.

Also among the new nominations are a host of other well-known names from across the cricket world, including Carlos Brathwaite, Tom Curran, James Neesham, Wahab Riaz and Phil Salt.

They join a host of other new and returning faces previously announced as Draft nominees including including Laurie Evans, Alex Hales, Colin Munro, Mujeeb Ur Rahman and James Vince, who are among 26 players eligible for retention by their Clubs from last season.

Former Australia, Adelaide Strikers, Melbourne Stars and South Australia fast bowler Daniel Worrall has also nominated for the Draft. Worrall is now classified as an overseas player following his permanent move to England. He is currently playing in The Hundred in England as a local player.

Nominations for the KFC BBL|12 Draft officially closed overnight. All players have indicated their availability for part of all of the season. The League is working with players and agents to verify all new nominations and availabilities. A full list will be published in coming days.

The updated nominations list can be found here.

Following the Draft, Clubs will be able to sign unselected players as Overseas Replacement Players based on their nominated availabilities in the Draft.

Alistair Dobson, Cricket Australia’s General Manager of Big Bash Leagues, said:

“The number and quality of nominations for the KFC BBL|12 Draft has blown us away, and vindicates the decision to adopt this new, innovative model.

"Close to 280 players from around the world have elected to venture to Australia this summer and experience the best of the BBL and summer lifestyle our country offers.

“On behalf of the League and our Clubs, we extend our thanks to all players and their agents around the world for their support of the Draft and the BBL.

“We look forward with great anticipation to Sunday night’s Draft event, which will be a watershed moment in the BBL’s history.”

The full list of platinum players, who will be paid AU$340,000 (US $233,853 approx.) regardless of how many games they are available for, reads: Faf du Plessis, Roy, Liam Livingstone, Sam Billings, Kieron Pollard, Russell, David Willey, Shadab, Dwayne Bravo, Rashid Khan, Chris Jordan, and Boult.

Of the above list, Billings (Sydney Thunder), Russell (Melbourne Stars), Shadab (Sydney Sixers), Jordan (Sydney Sixers) and Rashid (Adelaide Strikers) are available for retention by the clubs they played for last season.

Of the platinum names, only Willey and Shadab are not, as yet, involved in either the South Africa league or ILT20 of the UAE. Those heading to the new tournaments will likely be available for the BBL until late December, but exact details are still being confirmed.

Shadab is part of a large group of Pakistan players to be included in the final draft list which tallies 279 names overall. There had been doubts as to whether the PCB would issue NOCs to any of their players for overseas leagues, but more than 40 players are involved.

That includes Mohammad Amir, Sarfaraz Ahmed and Wahab Riaz, but none of the multi-format stars such as Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan and Shaheen Shah Afridi.

Final list of 332 nominees from 20 countries confirmed for KFC BBL|12 Draft
A final list of 332 nominees from 20 countries has been confirmed for Sunday’s KFC BBL|12 Draft, to be broadcast live and exclusive on Fox Cricket.

The list, which includes the final 54 nominations received shortly before the August 21 deadline, is available here.

Headlining the new nominees is New Zealand great Ross Taylor, England Test opener Zak Crawley and current Pakistan players Abdullah Shafique, Yasir Shah and Imam Ul Haq.

A total of 28 players will be eligible for retention by their Clubs from last season, while 12 players will be eligible for selection in the opening round after being awarded Platinum status by the League on Monday.

Presiding over their selection, and that of all players who have nominated Australia as a destination of choice this summer, will be Fox Cricket’s expert commentary team.

Kath Loughnan will host the KFC BBL|12 Draft, alongside Australian cricket legends Mike Hussey and Darren Lehmann.

In the Draft HQ room, Mark Howard will guide the Clubs through the four rounds of selections, while also gauging live reactions from each club’s recruitment panel on the Draft floor.

Fox Cricket’s Draft broadcast will be available on Foxtel and Kayo Sports following Australia’s Dettol ODI Series clash with Zimbabwe in Townsville.

Mike Hussey, Australian cricket great and Fox Cricket commentator, said:

“It should be a fascinating Draft but a very important one in giving teams the best chance of success in this edition of the BBL.

“With the calibre of players in this year’s international Draft combined with some of the Aussie test players joining the back end of BBL season, it is set to be one of the biggest yet.”

Alistair Dobson, Cricket Australia’s General Manager, Big Bash Leagues, said:

“Sunday night’s KFC BBL|12 Draft is the first must-see event of the Big Bash summer.

“We love the hype, anticipation and speculation the Draft has created throughout the winter months. Now it is over to our Clubs to build their lists from a selection of the best players in the world.

“We encourage all fans of the Big Bash to tune in to Fox Cricket, follow on social and share their thoughts throughout the evening.”

Apart from shadab , amir and dahani , zafar gohar I can't see any of the others in the draft being picked because they are all over the hill has been or club level Sunday league cricketers so why would a premier league like bbl want these players .

Overseas players locked in for KFC BBL|12 at inaugural Draft

Liam Livingstone, Rashid Khan and Trent Boult headline a list of 24 overseas players selected in the KFC BBL|12 Draft.

The competition’s first Draft for overseas players saw Clubs consider 332 players from 20 countries for coveted positions in their squads for the season.

Seven clubs selected Platinum players in round one, with Livingstone named the competition's inaugural number one Draft selection by the Melbourne Renegades.

Melbourne Stars attempted to pluck Khan from under the noses of Adelaide Strikers with pick two, before he was retained for a sixth straight season in blue.

Boult then became pick three for the Stars, before Sam Billings (Brisbane Heat), Chris Jordan (Sydney Sixers), David Willey (Sydney Thunder) and Shadab Khan (Hobart Hurricanes) were also taken in the opening round. Perth Scorchers passed on their round one selection.

The contracting period for replacement overseas players commences tomorrow. Clubs may contract a maximum of seven overseas players for KFC BBL|12, split as either three primary (via Draft night) and four replacements, or two primary and five replacements.

Alistair Dobson, Cricket Australia’s General Manager, Big Bash Leagues, said:

“The inaugural KFC BBL Draft was a resounding success and the perfect way to begin the countdown to the summer of Big Bash.

"The League is delighted to welcome a host of the world's biggest names to the competition, complemented by the next group up and comers.

"We'd like to congratulate all Clubs on their recruitment and look forward to seeing the players put on a show for all fans at the game.

"Our thanks also goes to Fox Cricket, plus players and agents from around the world, for their support of the draft concept."

Some of the round 2 picks are arguably better than round one picks.

Guys like Hales, Grandhomme, Mujeeb are better picks than Billings, Willey and Jordan IMO.

CA stand by Big Bash talent pool after inaugural draft

Cricket Australia insists it has the strongest Big Bash League playing pool in the competition's history despite some of the game's biggest names being snubbed in the overseas draft.

The star talent overlooked in Sunday night's draft continues to be a point of contention, with the likes of platinum players Faf du Plessis, Dwayne Bravo, Jason Roy and Andre Russell not picked up.

While some big-name stars were not selected, Shadab Khan, David Willey, Chris Jordan, Laurie Evans Joe Clarke and Asif Ali all earned picks in the opening two rounds.

In reality, the majority of those players are renowned match-winners in T20 cricket despite most having not attracted all-star attention in Australia.

CA also point to the likes of West Indies' Akeal Hosein, the world's No.6 ranked T20 bowler who was picked up by the Melbourne Renegades but is virtually unknown by most Australians.

BBL boss Alistair Dobson insists the large availability of Australia's own international talent meant the competition's list was its most marketable yet at a critical time in the tournament's existence.

"From our perspective, this coming BBL season is the strongest in its history with that entire group," Dobson told AAP.

"Rather than looking at the players who didn't get drafted, it's important to look at the ones who did.

"Rashid Khan, Liam Livingstone, Trent Boult, they represent the best of the best in world cricket.

"Right down through the platinum and gold rounds there are household BBL names in there.

"It's also important to look at that in the context of the full availability of Australia's white-ball superstars and the strong availability of Australia's multi-format players including David Warner."

Along with the key platinum players overlooked, Sandeep Lamichhanne and Tom Curran were also among those not retained.

Boult, Asif Ali and Rilee Rossouw are the best names picked up to have not featured prominently in the BBL before.

But organisers are adamant availability was not as major a factor behind the non-selections as made out, despite it being a major talking point on the night.

Nine of the overseas players picked will be available for the whole tournament, including David Willey, Laurie Evans (both Perth), Joe Clarke (Melbourne Stars) and Colin de Grandhomme (Adelaide) from the platinum and gold levels.

Du Plessis and Russell, who were only available for about half of the matches, were overlooked for others with similar departure dates.

"Clubs, in choosing platinum players, were comparing apples for apples," Dobson said.

"Availability was clearly one of the inputs that clubs took into account.

"(But) the degree to which availability was a reason why certain players were overlooked wasn't necessarily the case when you look at who was selected."

Asif Ali & Faheem Ashraf are not going to be successful. On those pitches and big boundaries. Oh boy.

Decision Review System (DRS) technology will be introduced into the KFC Big Bash League and Weber Women’s Big Bash League for the first time this season.

Amendments to Playing Conditions for both competitions have been finalised, with the popular Power Surge innovation to be implemented in Weber WBBL|08.

KFC BBL|12 will see the introduction of an innings clock, while the Bash Boost point and X-Factor substitution have been removed.

Decision Review System

The introduction of DRS has been welcomed by players and match officials alike, who share a desire for meaningful improvement in decision making and minimal impact on match timings.

The system will be implemented in all KFC BBL|12 matches and the 24 Weber WBBL|08 matches shown on both Seven and Foxtel, including Finals.

The remaining 35 Weber WBBL|08 matches, to be broadcast on Foxtel and cricket.com.au, will be produced via live stream technology which does not currently support DRS. The League will continue to strive towards greater DRS coverage for future WBBL seasons.

The process for reviewing an on-field decision will be:
15 seconds to call for a review
One unsuccessful review per innings, per team
Reviewing team to keep their one unsuccessful review if the decision results in ‘Umpire’s Call’

Power Surge

Following its successful implementation in the KFC BBL, the Power Surge innovation has been extended to the Weber WBBL from this season.

All matches in both competitions will now feature a four-over Powerplay at the beginning of each innings, with a two-over Power Surge to be called by the batting team between overs 11-20. Only two fielders may be outside the field restriction circle during these times.

Innings Clock

For KFC BBL|12, an innings clock will be introduced, requiring fielding teams to commence the last over inside 79 minutes (plus allowances).

Failure to meet this requirement will result in an in-game penalty, with the fielding team limited to four fielders outside the field restriction circle for the remainder of the innings.

The innings clock will not be implemented in Weber WBBL|08.

Bash Boost and X-Factor

After two years of implementation, both the Bash Boost point and X-Factor substitution have been removed from the KFC BBL Playing Conditions.

Both innovations were introduced following a significant period of research and analysis, with a view to increasing fan engagement and positive play. While there have been no negative outcomes of note, the League feels they have also not achieved the level of positive impact intended.

Teams will now revert to naming a standard playing XI, 12th and substitute fielders, while competition points will be reverted to two for a win, one for a tie or abandoned match and zero for a loss.

Alistair Dobson, Cricket Australia’s General Manager, Big Bash Leagues, said:

“The League is delighted to introduce DRS to every KFC BBL game and the 24 simulcast Weber WBBL games, in line with the very best cricket competitions in the world.

“Implementing DRS has been a challenging task for the BBL, which is the most logistically complex T20 league in the world. That, plus the impact of the pandemic on travel and movement, have meant the technology has not been possible to introduce until this season.

“Additionally, the League is pleased with the outcomes of the wider Playing Conditions review process, with the introduction of the Power Surge to WBBL and the BBL innings clock both major wins for fans.

“We retain a clear desire to innovate and drive our Leagues forward but are also willing to review decisions that have not realised the intended positive impact, such as the Bash Boost point and X-Factor substitution.

“The League thanks Hawk-Eye, Virtual Eye, BBG Sports and our broadcast partners Seven and Foxtel for their work over several years to implement DRS in the Big Bash Leagues. Similarly, we thank members of the Playing Conditions Advisory Committee including the Australian Cricketers’ Association, players, match officials and Cricket Australia representatives for their time and inputs to this process.”

Zak Crawley is poised to make his KFC Big Bash League debut with the Hobart Hurricanes, after being named as an international replacement player for the Hobart Hurricanes.

The English batter will join the squad as a replacement player for Hurricanes international recruit, Shadab Khan, when he is required for national duties during Pakistan’s home limited overs series.

Despite not having Big Bash experience, Crawley is a player with expansive international experience that will add value to a Hurricanes list that already runs deep with talent.

Contracted with Kent in the English Country competition, Crawley is already an experienced campaigner for his native, England, having represented his country 31 times to date across Test and One-Day International cricket.

At the domestic T20 level, right-hand, top-order batter has an impressive strike rate of 145.08 at the having amassed 1284 runs over 47 appearances, including a personal top-score of 108* in 2020.

“I’m really excited to take part in the Big Bash for the first time,” Crawley said.

“From afar, the Hurricanes seem to be awash with talent both in terms of the list they have built for on-field success, but also the quality list of support stuff they have on it. I’m looking forward to taking part in what I hope will be a very successful summer.”

Crawley joins Asif Ali (o/s), Faheem Ashraf (o/s), Tim David, Paddy Dooley, Nathan Ellis, Caleb Jewell, Shadab Khan (o/s), Ben McDermott, Riley Meredith, Mitch Owen, Joel Paris, Wil Parker, D’Arcy Short, Billy Stanlake, Chris Tremain, Matthew Wade and Mac Wright as Hurricanes currently signed for BBL|12.

One more domestic contract remains available with the Hurricanes for the upcoming season.

Byes to win! Thunder edge season opener off last ball

Sydney Thunder have survived a batting collapse on KFC BBL|12 opening night to claim a one-wicket win over the Melbourne Stars after a chaotic and thrilling final over.

After the Thunder lost their last established batter Chris Green (17) on the first ball of the last over, Gurinder Sandhu (20no) was the unlikely hero, belting a six over deep midwicket before four byes off the final ball denied the Stars (8-122) a fairy-tale comeback.

The pair's premature exits on Tuesday night underscored a disappointing innings at the crease for the Stars, who were sent in to bat after losing the bat flip.

Burns pulled up sore running between wickets and after retiring hurt three overs later, and was sent for scans on his hamstring with coach David Hussey later confirming he would miss four to five weeks.

Coming in once Burns left, Stoinis was caught at short fine leg trying to slog sweep Green on the first delivery he faced.

Stoinis was not well enough to field or bowl later on, and instead watched the second innings from the boundary draped in a blanket.

The Thunder restricted the Stars thanks to economical spells from Daniel Sams (2-21), Green (1-19) and BBL debutant Fazalhaq Farooqi (2-20), who took two wickets in a powerplay that only yielded five runs for the Stars.

Nick Larkin (25) top-scored for Melbourne and from the 12th over onwards, the Stars hit only two boundaries.

Chasing down 123 should have been routine for the Thunder, who boast the likes of Alex Hales, Rilee Rossouw and Jason Sangha in their top order.

But in his long-awaited BBL debut, veteran New Zealand international Trent Boult snagged two wickets in three balls to knock the Sydneysiders off balance in the first over.

Matt Gilkes edged Boult to emergency fielder Brody Couch, who juggled the ball four times before taking a contender for catch of the year on the ground at short fine leg.

On Boult's next delivery, Rossouw was caught by Nathan Coulter-Nile in the slips and the Thunder had lost two wickets without scoring a run.

Hales (16) and Daniel Sams (3) were thwarted in their attempts to slog the Thunder out of trouble, both victims of Coulter-Nile's (3-19) efficient spell.

The Thunder put off taking their power surge, hoping batting partners Green and Alex Ross could find their rhythm first.

But Stars captain Adam Zampa sprung Ross with a length ball onto off stump that sealed his 100th BBL wicket and left the Thunder at 7-89.

Green and Sandhu needed 15 runs from the last two overs and when Sandhu slogged Luke Wood to long on for four, the Thunder had a sniff.

But a second classic catch from Couch, diving in the deep, had Green dismissed and the Stars were all but home with no more established batters left.

That was, until Sandhu rose from the rubble to keep the Stars at bay.

Adelaide Strikers won by 51 runs

PLAYER OF THE MATCH
Matthew Short

==

The Adelaide Strikers have made an impeccable start to their BBL campaign, dazzling with both bat and ball to trounce the Sydney Sixers by 51 runs at Adelaide Oval.

After amassing an imposing 6-184 on Wednesday evening, largely on the back of Matt Short's 84, Henry Thornton's career-best 4-20 helped the Strikers restrict the Sixers to 7-133.

Thornton and leg-spin wizard Rashid Khan (3-21) starred with the ball for the Strikers who exacted some retribution for last season's Challenger Final between the two sides at the SCG, which the Sixers won in a last-ball heart-stopper to advance to the decider.

Jordan Silk (36) top-scored for the Sixers, whose lacklustre reply spluttered early and never recovered.

Introduced in the third over, Thornton struck twice in his first three balls, dismissing dangerous duo Kurtis Patterson (9) and James Vince (0).

Josh Philippe (26) and captain Moises Henriques (24) both fell victim to Rashid wrong 'uns as the Strikers' grip on the contest tightened.

With the asking rate escalating, the Sixers were aiming to match the home side's 30-run haul when they took the two-over power surge but could muster just six runs, corralled by the Strikers' two experienced bowlers, Rashid and skipper Peter Siddle.

Thornton returned to the attack near the death and knocked over Dan Christian and Sean Abbott to complete his haul.

Earlier, Short led the Strikers' assault with the bat after surviving the BBL's historic first-ever DRS challenge.

After the early loss of Jake Weatherald (1), the Strikers temporarily plummeted to 2-2 when umpire Bruce Oxenford ruled Short, also on one, lbw to Abbott.

Short successfully reviewed the decision, television replays confirming the ball was missing the stumps, and made the most of his reprieve, smoking the Sixers attack in his classy 53-ball knock.

Short was wonderfully supported by the competition's all-time leading run-scorer Chris Lynn (41) and swashbuckling England import Adam Hose (40), who both impressed for their new side.

Abbott (3-37) and 19-year-old Afghan mystery spinner Izharulhaq Naveed (2-25) were the pick of the Sixers bowlers.

Skipper powers new-look Renegades to first up win

Melbourne Renegades skipper Nic Maddinson has plundered a scintillating 87 runs against Brisbane Heat to set up a 22-run victory in his 100th KFC BBL game.

Maddinson got out of the blocks quickly, kept his cool when four wickets fell in a clump, and put his foot down again late to lift the Renegades to 7-166 batting first in Cairns after being sent in.

In reply the Heat were restricted to 6-144.

West Indies T20 international Akeal Hossein (3-15 off four overs) opened the bowling for the Renegades with his left-arm finger spinners and dismissed opener Max Bryant for a duck with his fifth delivery and the momentum stayed with the Renegades from then on.

Hossein was playing his first game in the BBL and was the dominant bowler on the night to give the Renegades a great start to the new season after finishing bottom of the ladder last season.

Heat recruit Colin Munro (35 off 30 balls), with 65 T20 internationals to his name for New Zealand, was finding top form with the bat before he was run out by a direct hit from Tom Rogers.

When Brisbane skipper Jimmy Peirson was bowled by Hossein for 43 off 30 deliveries in the 15th over the required rate was nearing the unachievable.

The 30-year-old Maddinson earlier set the platform for victory, taking 20 off Xavier Bartlett's second over and a further 22 off his third in a 49-ball innings, including 10 fours and three sixes, that produced his highest score in T20 cricket.

West Indies international Andre Russell (35 off 28 balls) celebrated his return to the Renegades with a powerhouse innings including three sixes.

The visitors rocketed to 0-65 off six overs before Sam Harper (21) was well caught at fine leg by Josh Brown off the first delivery bowled by the impressive James Bazley (2-19 off four).

The Renegades lost 4-22 in six overs due to some shrewd captaincy by Heat skipper Jimmy Peirson and smart bowling by spinners Mitch Swepson (1-30) and Matt Kuhnemann (3-32).

Swepson knocked over Jake Fraser-McGurk (3) with a classic googly before Kuhnemann took two wickets in one over by slowing down his pace and bamboozling Aaron Finch (4) and offseason recruit Jono Wells (1).

That was when Maddinson and Russell took control in a 78-run stand off 46 deliveries.

Maddinson, when on 42, was involved in a bizarre incident when he played a pull-shot off Mark Steketee.

The ball lobbed over the stumps but one bail came off.

On review it was clear that the dislodged bail was an unexplainable mystery but no fault of the batter.

SYDNEY: The Big Bash League (BBL) franchise Sydney Thunder bagged an unwanted record as the team bundled out for the lowest-ever total in the history of T20 cricket.

The Thunder, in their BBL fixture against Adelaide Strikers, saw their batting lineup crumble as the side bundled out for just 15 runs.

Set to chase 140, none of the Thunder batters could amass a double-figure mark despite having the likes of Rilee Rossouw and Alex Hales in their lineup.

The Thunder’s dismal total of 15 is now the lowest-ever total in T20 cricket, dethroning Turkey’s 21 against the Czech Republic in the unwanted list.

The Strikers’ pacers Henry Thornton and Wes Agar played the key role in the Thunder’s misery as they bagged nine wickets combined for just nine runs.

Thornton returned with astounding bowling figures of 5/3, while Agar picked four wickets for just six runs.

Following their dismal batting performance, the Thunder endured a crushing 124-run defeat.

:))) Sydney thunder. More like Sydney got Thumped

Sydney Thunder were dismissed for 15 - the lowest score in men's Twenty20 history - as they were thrashed by Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League on Friday.

Chasing 140 to win, Thunder were bowled out in just 35 balls, with number 10 Brendan Doggett top-scoring with four.

Five players made a duck, including England T20 World Cup winner and opening batter Alex Hales.

The previous lowest score was Turkey's 21 against the Czech Republic in 2019.

Strikers' pace bowler Henry Thornton took 5-3 and Wes Agar 4-6 as they claimed a 124-run victory against the abject Thunder.

They had posted a reasonable 139-9 from their 20 overs but tore through Thunder's batting line-up, with the hosts reduced to 9-6 and then 10-8.

Thunder's sole boundary came from a Brendan Doggett inside edge in the penultimate over of the match, which gave him the top score of four.

Their innings of 5.5 overs is the shortest innings in men's T20 history.

"I feel like I need to retire now. I don't think I'm getting better than that," Thornton told Channel Seven.

"I honestly cannot believe what just happened. I think everyone here probably doesn't know what is going on either. It was amazing."

Perth Scorchers won by 38 runs

PLAYER OF THE MATCH
Jhye Richardson

==

Perth Scorchers have launched their KFC BBL title defence in style, keeping the Sydney Sixers winless with a 38-run victory in the clash of last season's finalists.

Potent new-ball pairing Jhye Richardson (4-9) and Jason Behrendorff (2-22) returned in hot form at Optus Stadium on Saturday night as the defending champions bowled out the Sixers for 117 in response to their 9-155.

Richardson's miserly death bowling snuffed out any chance of a Sixers comeback, while Behrendorff had the visitors reeling at 3-9 after dismissing Josh Philippe then having Moises Henriques caught behind for a golden duck.

The hat-trick didn't eventuate but it set the tone for a miserable start for the Sixers, who soon also lost James Vince and Dan Christian in single figures.

Jordan Silk (41 off 32 balls) and Hayden Kerr (42 off 35) steadied the ship and managed to bat deep into the innings.

But Richardson's return to the attack accounted for Kerr before Silk was brilliantly caught in the deep by a diving Ashton Agar off the bowling of Matthew Kelly.

Silk should have been caught on four when he top-edged a Behrendorff delivery but Richardson badly mistimed his run from the deep fine-leg boundary and it sailed over his head.

Wily veteran Andrew Tye (2-26) and Agar (1-27) also returned in form, both striking in their first overs.

It leaves the Sixers winless after their first two games following Wednesday's 51-run loss to the Adelaide Strikers.

The Scorchers had earlier been in trouble at 5-49 off seven overs before Agar (24) and young gun Aaron Hardie (55 off 32) combined to repair the damage.

Hardie paced himself before releasing the pressure valve with three sixes during the Power Surge to bring up his half-century.

Perth's first glimpse of high-profile import Faf du Plessis proved short-lived after the Scorchers won the toss and elected to bat.

The former South Africa captain crunched his first ball faced past mid-off for four but chopped on to debutant Afghanistan seamer Naveen-ul-Haq Murid on 14.

With Sean Abbott conceding 28 runs in the second over of the Power Surge, evergreen seamer Jackson Bird was the pick of the Sixers' bowlers.

The 36-year-old dismissed Scorchers skipper Ashton Turner and maintained impeccable lengths to finish with 3-26 and 13 dot balls.

Afghanistan leg-spinner Izharulhaq Naveed snared 2-22, including the wicket of Hardie.

The Australian T20 captain came in during the fifth over after a strong start from Jake Fraser-McGurk (24 off 18) and used all his experience to steer the ‘Gades to victory with a ball to spare.

Needing 11 off the final over, Akeal Hosein departed on the opening delivery, with the skied-ball keeping Finch at the non-striker’s end, however a six from the veteran two balls later all but sealed victory.

A pair of twos to come from Finch finished the job, with the Renegades maintaining a perfect record after two games to start the season.

It is the first time the club has gone 2-0 since BBL|08.

Rookie spinner Paddy Dooley has weaved a spell of swirling-arm magic to inspire the Hobart Hurricanes to an against-the-odds win over the Perth Scorchers.

Dooley, playing just his third KFC BBL game, picked up 4-16 from four overs in Launceston on Monday night as Hobart defended 8-172 to win by eight runs.

The 25-year-old, who recently revealed his unique action was inspired by Indian quick Jasprit Bumrah, bowled a crucial 16th over that turned the game.

With Perth needing 36 runs from 30 balls, Dooley removed Josh Inglis (62 from 37), had Ashton Agar stumped for a duck and conceded just two runs.

Hurricanes spinner Shadab Khan picked up Aaron Hardie in the penultimate over with a leaping caught-and-bowled.

Perth needed 14 runs off the final over, bowled by quick Nathan Ellis, but it proved a bridge too far.

Dooley earlier had two scalps in his first spell, bowling South Africa veteran Faf du Plessis (32 from 16) and trapping Nick Hobson in front.

Inglis steered the ship before being caught in the outfield off Dooley playing a rash shot.

The win breaks the Hurricanes' five-game losing streak against Perth, and both sides are now 1-1 to start the season.

Earlier, a half-century from Matthew Wade and some late swinging by Tim David headlined the Hurricanes' innings.

Wade got his team off to a brisk start with 51 from 29 balls before Hobart wobbled in the middle overs, losing 5-18.

David weathered the storm and freed his arms at the death, hitting some much-needed boundaries in an unbeaten 46 from 28 deliveries.

Perth quick Jhye Richardson finished with 3-26 from four overs, including the scalps of imports Khan and James Neesham in the 13th over during the power surge.

Wade was in the middle on the second ball of the innings after Ben McDermott copped a Jason Behrendorff inswinger and was trapped lbw for a golden duck.

D'Arcy Short stepped up in his absence with 35 from 25 before becoming Tye's second victim to a sharp low catch in the deep by Behrendorff.

Short had an ordinary night in the field, grassing two catches, including Inglis in the 30s.

After another Matt Short masterclass, the rampant Adelaide Strikers have maintained their perfect start to KFC BBL|12 with a six-wicket win over Sydney Thunder at Adelaide Oval.

Short (65) was circumspect early on Tuesday night before exploding after the powerplay to propel the ladder-leading Strikers past the Thunder's 5-150 with eight deliveries to spare, and to a 3-0 record.

After the early departure of Jake Weatherald (seven), Short, this season's leading runscorer, opened his shoulders and bludgeoned five sixes in his scintillating 44-ball knock.

Short, who also was miserly with the ball (0-13 off three overs), took a liking to Daniel Sams' offerings and dominated an 83-run, second-wicket union with Chris Lynn (28), who was cast in the unlikely role of second fiddle.

Both men fell to superb yorkers from Nathan McAndrew (2-25), Lynn's castle disturbed and Short trapped in front, before English import Adam Hose (28no) came in and applied the finishing touches.

Earlier, the Strikers bowlers put their team in a strong position after recovering from an early Alex Hales onslaught.

The English master blaster top-scored with 68 but was kept in relative check after crunching 36 of the Thunder's 39 powerplay runs.

The Adelaide crowd broke into a round of applause in the third over when the Thunder's score went past the T20 world record low 15 that they embarrassingly posted against the Strikers on Friday night.

Hales put on 63 for the third wicket with young Ollie Davies (42) before both succumbed to Colin de Grandhomme (2-25).

The Thunder, whose win-loss record fell to 1-3, were eyeing off 180-plus after reaching 2-79 at the halfway stage before being restricted to 3-71, including just three boundaries, in the last 10 overs.

Friday's destroyer Henry Thornton captured 2-19 to take his season tally to 11 wickets at a phenomenal average of 3.82.

West Indian power hitter Andre Russell has blasted a half-century to help the Melbourne Renegades maintain their unbeaten start to KFC BBL|12 with a four-wicket win over the Brisbane Heat.

Michael Neser responded to his Test omission in spectacular fashion, claiming the ninth hat-trick in Big Bash history as he destroyed the Renegades' top order in Geelong on Wednesday night.

But Russell launched a stunning rearguard, whacking half a dozen sixes as he top-scored with 57 off 42.

One of his sixes was a 103m monster – the equal-biggest of the season so far – belted straight back over James Bazley's head.

The scintillating innings helped guide the Renegades to 6-139, squeaking past Brisbane's modest tally of 8-137 with four balls to spare.

The Renegades managed just 10 wins over three years after claiming the 2018-19 title, but now have a perfect 3-0 start this season.

Brisbane have slumped to 0-2 despite the heroics of Neser, who claimed career-best T20 figures of 4-32 in his first match in any format since being left out of Australia's Test side to face South Africa.

The right-arm quick removed Sam Harper with the first ball of the Renegades' run chase and sent Jake Fraser-McGurk packing at the end of the same over.

Neser's tear continued when Nic Maddinson chopped on at the start of the third over and the hat-trick was complete when Jon Wells left an inswinging ball that cannoned into the stumps.

Neser was not far away from the BBL's second double hat-trick when another inswinger went through Russell's gate, but it narrowly missed off-stump and ran away for four byes.

Russell was dropped on 31 by Bazley and took advantage, belting double the Heat's total of three sixes before he was eventually caught behind off Mark Steketee (2-23).

Aaron Finch (31 not out) and Will Sutherland (6no) steered the Renegades home after Akeal Hosein (30 off 19) played a crucial cameo with the bat.

Earlier, Brisbane won the toss and batted first but staggered through an innings that lacked the usual T20 fireworks.

Captain Jimmy Peirson (45 not out) top-scored for the Heat and hit six of his side's eight fours during a 29-run power surge in the final two overs.

Matt Renshaw (29) and Sam Billings (25) put on a 61-run partnership for the third wicket but both fell victim to Renegades paceman Tom Rogers, who posted career-best figures of 4-23.

Sydney Sixers won by 6 runs - 14 ovs per side due to rain

==

The Sydney Sixers are off the bottom of the KFC BBL|12 ladder after defeating the Hobart Hurricanes by six runs at the SCG in their first win of the summer.

The Sixers posted a respectable 6-137 after winning the toss and choosing to bat in a clash delayed by an hour and condensed to 14 overs each due to rain.

The Sixers lost 3-2 in a batting collapse that threatened to seal a third-straight loss, but the bloodshed was bookended by solid knocks from openers Kurtis Patterson (38) and Josh Philippe (43), and then Hayden Kerr (32).

Hurricanes' tweakers Shadab Khan (2-32) and overnight sensation Paddy Dooley (2-19) were chief destroyers as captain Moises Henriques, veteran Dan Christian and 100-gamer Jordan Silk all went without scoring.

Henriques' golden duck was his second from as many outings.

But the bowlers in magenta stood tall to scupper the Hurricanes, who briefly looked a chance to steal victory when Asif Ali (41 off 13 balls) belted five boundaries from as many deliveries across the final two overs.

Veteran spinner Steve O'Keefe was miserly with 1-7, sending down eight dot balls and claiming the big wicket of reigning player of the tournament Ben McDermott (17).

Tipped as a future Australian representative, Todd Murphy (1-18) was determined to make the most of his first chance for the Sixers this summer.

Just as Shadab and Matthew Wade looked ready to take charge, he enticed Wade (15) into mistiming a slog sweep which picked Silk out at deep midwicket for an easy catch.

Naveen-ul-Haq could have had Shadab when on two but the third umpire ruled the Sixers' Afghan recruit had placed a foot on the boundary rope as he attempted to keep the ball alive and salvage a catch.

Paceman Kerr (2-36) had him an over after Wade went and the visitors were back to square one again after losing both established batters.

In the second last over, Asif Ali pulled the trigger with 26 runs off five balls to give Kerr nightmares and make the Sixers nervous.

But the furious knock came to an end when Silk caught the Pakistani import in the deep, leaving the Hurricanes just short at 7-131.

Brisbane Heat won by 6 runs

PLAYER OF THE MATCH
Sam Billings

==

The Brisbane Heat have ruined former favourite son Chris Lynn's return to the Gabba, with a Sam Billings half-century helping the home side to an upset six-run win over the Adelaide Strikers in front of 17,283 fans.

Undefeated Adelaide sat atop the KFC BBL table with three wins going into Friday night's clash against the last-placed Heat, who had lost their opening two games of the season following on from a six-game losing streak to end their last campaign.

But Billings (79) fired the Heat to 9-166 after the home side won the bat flip, with the Strikers losing early wickets to be 4-38 before finishing their 20 overs at 9-160.

Colin de Grandhomme (37) and Thomas Kelly shared a 73-run partnership, Kelly making a career-high 43 off 33 balls, and some lusty late hitting from Harry Nielsen (24) saw the visitors needing 32 runs from the final three overs.

But Michael Neser (2-23 from four overs) took a wicket and gave up just four runs in the 19th over to put the game out of Adelaide's reach.

Mark Steketee was the best of the Heat bowlers with figures of 4-34 from his four overs.

Lynn, the face of the Heat for 11 seasons, made 12 runs before he was given out lbw in his first meeting against his old side.

The all-time BBL leading run-scorer strode to the crease in the first over after Neser trapped Jake Weatherald in front with the first ball of the innings.

In an eventful over, Lynn advanced down the wicket to the first ball he faced, which was one of three wides Neser bowled that over, played and missed twice and edged one past a diving second slip for four.

The visitors were in trouble at 2-14 when NKT Golden Bat leader Matt Short (three) went in the second over and worse was to come when Lynn was given out off the first ball of the fourth.

The Strikers were left to rue a wasteful DRS challenge by Weatherald that was unsuccessful, which meant Lynn was unable to review his decision, with replays showing the ball clearly going over the stumps.

Earlier, Billings, who was dropped on 22 and 42, bludgeoned 27 runs, including three sixes, off the 19th over bowled by Peter Siddle.

He eventually departed for 79 off 48 deliveries, his innings including six fours and four sixes.

Max Bryant was the next best batter for the Heat, with his 46 runs including eight fours.

Short missed out with the bat, but claimed career-best figures of 3-14 from his three overs of off-spin.

Quick Henry Thornton, the BBL's current leading wicket-taker, finished with 1-37 to take his season tally to 12.

KFC Big Bash League Statement

Hobart Hurricanes player Matthew Wade has been suspended for one KFC Big Bash League match.

Wade recieved one suspension point after incurring three Level 1 Code of Conduct breaches within 18 months. The charges in that period relate to two instances of use of an audible obscenity and one instance of abuse of cricket equipment.

Wade is suspended from today’s KFC BBL|12 match between the Hobart Hurricanes and Melbourne Renegades at Blundstone Arena, Hobart.

The Hobart Hurricanes have defied the suspension of captain Matthew Wade and a late flurry with the bat from Will Sutherland to upset the Melbourne Renegades by eight runs on Christmas Eve.

After being rolled for 122 in 18 overs at Blundstone Arena on Saturday, the Hurricanes dismissed the Renegades for 114, with Sutherland almost dragging his side over the line before being dismissed in the last over.

He crunched 40 off 29 balls down the stretch after the Renegades slumped to 8-77 before holing out to Jimmy Neesham in the deep off Joel Paris in the 20th over that sealed victory for the undermanned hosts.

Wade was handed a one-game suspension for incurring three code of conduct breaches within 18 months.

The charges in that period relate to two instances of using of an audible obscenity and one instance of abuse of cricket equipment.

Wade's absence saw Nathan Ellis promoted to the captaincy and ex-Test skipper Tim Paine selected for his first KFC BBL game in almost five years.

In-form captain Nic Maddinson fell for a duck off the second ball of the reply as the Renegades' chase went from bad to worse.

Jono Wells (26) did his best to hold the middle-order together in the face of the assault led by player-of-the-match Riley Meredith (3-12) and Shadab Khan (3-20), before Sutherland almost pulled off a late miracle.

Earlier, Renegades debutant David Moody (3-16) ripped the Hurricanes' top-order apart before spinner Akeal Hosein did the damage to the lower-order.

Opener Jimmy Neesham dominated the Powerplay, smoking a rapid 28, before his exit sparked a rush of wickets.

Moody sent the off stump of Caleb Jewell (8) cartwheeling with one of the deliveries of the tournament before Pakistani allrounder Shadab Khan (14) succumbed to a stunning outfield catch by Jake Fraser-McGurk.

Ellis (21) tried to steady the sinking ship late before he became the second victim of West Indian powerhouse Andre Russell, who was playing his last game of the tournament before being replaced by New Zealand opener Martin Guptill.

Sydney Sixers skipper Moises Henriques has helped guide his side to a seven-wicket KFC BBL victory against a Melbourne Stars outfit shorn of pulling power.

In front of a 13,236-strong crowd at the SCG, the Sixers, who won the toss and opted to bowl, wrapped up victory with five balls to spare against a Stars side missing Nathan Coulter-Nile and Marcus Stoinis.

The visitors finished the first innings at 5-150 following a rescue mission of 78 off 51 balls from Beau Webster before Henriques carved out a methodical and unbeaten 52 to steer the Sixers to an eighth consecutive victory over the Stars in the Big Bash.

Stoinis, who had Covid a fortnight ago, was given a "managed" rest in the Stars' fourth game of the BBL season and was back in his hometown of Perth ahead of Thursday's clash with the Scorchers.

"He needs a bit of a rest, the big fella," Stars coach David Hussey told Fox Cricket.

"He'll be ready to go for the Perth fixture in a couple of days' time."

It looked as if the Stars were in for a tough night when they were 2-8 inside three overs after the dismissals of Tom Rogers (0) and James Seymour (6).

Joe Clarke (27) quickly found some rhythm before undoing his good work by chopping a Jackson Bird delivery onto his stumps.

When the Stars needed someone to invigorate their innings, Webster led the charge to build a patient and powerful half century off 38 balls.

He began to open up one he reached the milestone, only coming unstuck when he scooped a Hayden Kerr delivery to Jordan Silk at deep midwicket in the final over of the innings.

His side set the hosts a target of 151, and while the Sixers lost Josh Philippe early, they made a solid start through James Vince (33) and Kurtis Patterson (24).

Henriques and Jordan Silk (30no) slowly grew into an undefeated 88-run partnership, with the Sixers captain bringing up his half century by smacking Trent Boult for a six over backward square leg.

With one run needed with one over remaining, the pair snuck a quick single to wrap up the Sixers' second win of the campaign.

Ashton Turner was the hero as the Perth Scorchers overcame a huge batting collapse to post a thrilling three-wicket Boxing Day win over the ladder-leading Adelaide Strikers.

In reply to the Strikers' underwhelming total of 7-133, the Scorchers crashed to 6-72 in the 10th over of Monday night's clash.

A 43-run stand between Turner and Jhye Richardson steadied the ship, but things were still tense at the death with the Scorchers needing 18 runs off the final 10 balls.

Turner stepped up to the plate to deliver the killer blow in front of 26,211 fans at Optus Stadium.

He cracked a Henry Thornton full toss for six over long-on, followed it up with a four through point, and then carved the next ball for six over backward point to all but end the contest.

AJ Tye hit the winning boundary next over to secure victory with five balls to spare.

Turner finished unbeaten on 48 off 38 balls, with his knock featuring three fours and two sixes.

The result lifted Perth to equal top of the table alongside the Strikers and Melbourne Renegades.

The Strikers bowled the Sydney Thunder out for 15 earlier this month, and Adelaide produced another demolition job early in the Scorchers' innings.

Faf du Plessis hit part-time spinner Short (2-11 off two overs) for six on the second ball of the innings, but next delivery the former South African skipper was clean bowled.

Adam Lyth was caught down the leg side, and it was 3-17 when Nick Hobson fell at the hands of star spinner Rashid Khan (1-15 off four overs).

Josh Inglis (19 off 12 balls) settled the ship by blasting 18 runs off Thornton's second over.

But when Inglis was caught and bowled by Ben Manenti and Aaron Hardie (22) was bowled by Short, it was 5-63.

Ashton Agar was the next to fall, but from there Turner took control, guiding his side to victory with a captain's knock.

Earlier, Strikers dangerman Chris Lynn fell victim to a classy Jason Behrendorff run out as the Scorchers restricted Adelaide to a below par total.

The Strikers crawled to 2-59 after 11 overs, but with Lynn at the crease, Adelaide still had a huge chance to produce a blockbuster finish.

Those hopes were dealt a blow when Behrendorff produced a direct side-on hit in the 12th over to run out Lynn for 35 off 34 balls.

Lynn had set off for a single after nudging it to the offside but Behrendorff scooped up the ball and struck the target with an underarm throw despite having just one stump to aim at.

Andrew Tye picked up some late wickets to finish with 3-30, while Jhye Richardson (0-20) and spinner Peter Hatzoglou (0-22) were economical without reward.

Sydney Thunder won by 10 wkts

PLAYER OF THE MATCH
Matthew Gilkes

==

The Sydney Thunder have climbed off the bottom of the KFC BBL table with a 10-wicket win over the Brisbane Heat. The opening 124-run stand between Alex Hales (59no) and Matthew Gilkes (56no) was unbroken as the pair powered the Thunder to their second win of the season.

In what was their side's first game back at Sydney Showground since they were all-out for 15, the Thunder duo bore no mental scars as they sealed the win with 50 balls to spare. The pair took great delight in punishing Test hopefuls Michael Neser (0-31) and Mitchell Swepson (0-40) who struggled to defend the Heat's side's modest first innings total of 6-121 in the three overs they were each given to bowl. Brisbane had a hard night after winning the toss and opting to bat, with Max Bryant, Sam Billings and Matt Renshaw all walking for single figures. Opener Colin Munro steadied the ship with a methodical 43, building a balanced partnership with Jimmy Peirson (27).

There was some concern when Peirson was hit on the helmet by a 132kmh pacer from Nathan McAndrew in the 11th over. While Peirson was able to play on, his dismissal was the start of the Heat's implosion, with Munro going and Neser walking for a golden duck. Xavier Bartlett added a rapid 28 off 17 balls to leave the Thunder with a modest and achievable total. They rose to the challenge with Gilkes and Hales making a point of going after Swepson and Neser from the get-go. It was in the 11th over when Gilkes really began to motor, smashing Swepson for 25 off the over. That left the Thunder needing 10 runs to seal victory which England international Hales easily did within just four balls off Mark Steketee.

Sydney Sixers opener Josh Philippe outshone the highly regarded Melbourne Renegades batting line-up to help set up a commanding 34-run KFC BBL victory at the SCG.

The Sixers set the Renegades a target of 150, a total that looked like being much more when Philippe (55 off 40 balls) was on song but proved to be enough as the visitors spluttered to be all out for 115.

Left-arm quick Ben Dwarshuis (4-17) set the tone for the Renegades' innings with a blistering opening over to their prized recruit Martin Guptill.

The New Zealand white-ball star failed to make an impact on his Renegades debut in BBL|12, playing and missing at three balls then nicking a tentative drive to be caught behind for a duck.

Skipper Nic Maddinson (1) followed shortly after to leave the Renegades reeling at 2-8 in the fourth over, until veterans Aaron Finch and Shaun Marsh cautiously rebuilt their innings with a 55-run stand.

Marsh was typically edgy early but gradually looked more comfortable in his first match of the season after overcoming a calf injury until being clean bowled by Hayden Kerr for 28 off 25 balls.

It was left to Finch (36 off 35 balls) to blast the Renegades to an unlikely win but the national T20 captain was caught hitting out as the required run rate soared toward 12 an over.

The victory was all but sealed when Sean Abbott took a diving catch in the deep to dismiss Will Sutherland (13) just after the all-rounder had smashed a huge six off Dwarshuis and started to look dangerous.

The Sixers (3-2) have now won three consecutive matches – all at the SCG – to resurrect their season, while the Renegades (3-2) have lost two in a row after their promising start.

Renegades skipper Nic Maddinson won the bat flip and sent the hosts in but Philippe turned to his home ground expertise on the way to a 15th BBL fifty.

The 25-year-old frequently sought out a short boundary that was a mere 55m from the pitch, clearing the fence twice in a Mujeeb Ur Rahman over on the way to his crucial half-century.

The Renegades claimed the momentum after Philippe scooped a slower ball from Sutherland straight to Akeal Hosein, while Kane Richardson also restricted the hosts with 2-22, but their batting line-up was unable to live up to their reputations on the night.
