After beating the Gladiators today, the Zalmi have guaranteed a rematch against the men from Quetta in the 1st Qualifier of the 2016 PSL. With both teams now on 10 points, they are pretty much guaranteed to finish as the top 2 ranked teams at the end of the group stage.

The winner of the 1st Qualifier will go straight through to the final, whilst the the loser will play the winner of the Eliminator (which will take place between the 3rd & 4th ranked teams) in the 2nd Qualifier to determine the 2nd team for the final.

It's great to see the two 'smaller cities'/'smaller teams' showing the 'big boys' how it's done! The equation for Peshawar and Quetta is pretty straight forward now - win the qualifier, with the Final & be crowned champions of the inaugural PSL.

How can QG, play 7, win 5, lose 1 and not have a single NR and yet have only 10 points?

Thanks. Looks neat. Good luck to Quetta. Haven't been following much. Off and on on PP. Looks like QG is very likeable and have been led well by Sarfaraz.

Seems like Quetta and Peshawar will be playing against each other two more timess. In total they would have played each other 4 times.

Has LQ's ouster surprised many? I remember before PSL started, there was a lot of hype about Lahore and it was considered one of the teams to beat

That is just the way it is when organising a league in the same format as IPL.

PSL really should have approached it differently with the number 1 side going straight to the final, and a semi final between 2nd and 3rd position. (Bottom two sides being knocked out after the league stage)

Gayle and bravo out of form
Mustafizur wasn't allowed to play PSL by BCB
Yasir shah banned by ICC
Azhar ali captain :D

This really have hurt Lahore

I see. Yeah, I heard Gayle couldn't come to the party. Sad about Mustafiz. Plus Azhar Ali captaining a side. Guess everyone would learn from their mistakes. One good thing PSL would do is ensure that the talent scouts make a comeback. Pakistan is known for people scouting talent and making heroes out of unknowns.

During off season, each of the teams would be busy trying to find an unknown player at a bargain. Many IPL teams have done that. A few examples would be Cariappa, Hooda, Shivam Sinha etc.

So it will be a great match seeing A.S and W.R infront of each other but all in all that 6 to wahab was just amazinngggg!!!!

Why is Lahore out? They played only 6 games. What is they win their 7th game?

don't worry Lahore will make the playoffs. Karachi will be the one out of playoffs.

I believe we had 2 games in hand, while Karachi have 1.

So realistically, if we can bat first, with Delport and Umar/Gayle getting a big score like the Peshawar/Quetta game, we will win 9/10.

Karachi have it a lot more difficult than that, they don't have the explosive batting but then on the other hand, have a better captain and have better bowlers. Nearly defended >130 against Isloo.

Quetta didn't play there full strength on 14th against Peshawar a nice tactic but Quetta with the following line up got more chance of winning than Peshawar?

Ahmed Shehzad.
Luke Wright.
Kevin Pieterson.
Kumara Sangakara.
Sarfaraz Ahmed.
Grant Elliot.
Mohammed Nawaz.
Bilal Asif. / Saad Nasim.
Anwar Ali.
Bismillah Khan / Akbar.ur.Rehman.
Umar Gul / Zulfiqar Babar

PEshawar should give rest to Tait and try Hassan Ali now they have qualified.

I dont know why Afridi is so reluctant to try new faces even in dead rubbers

How do the Play Off's work? Is it like a Semi-Final of sorts? If so, why are the number 1 and number 2 teams playing each other? Shouldn't it be number 1 and number 4 and the other game between number 2 and number 3?

Nevermind the above post. Just figured out how it works. Huge benefit to the sides finishing 1st and 2nd. Nicely done PCB. Maybe when they add teams the team finishing top goes through and they can have a similar playoff between 2-4 with teams finishing 2nd and 3rd getting the advantage. Right now there's no difference between 1 and 2.

Lahore has yet to play two matches and other teams one. So if Karachi lose and Lahore win their both they still have a chance.

It means Quetta v Peshawar can't be a final?

They can.

The way it's structured is as follows

1st Playoff: Quetta vs Peshawar -> Winner to the final
2nd Playoff: 2nd Team vs 3rd Team
3rd Playoff: Winner of 2nd Playoff vs Loser of 1st Playoff. -> Winner to the final

all that hype was simply based on the fact that traditionally Lahore and Karachi teams have been top of the tree in Pakistan. But if anyone with a bit of common sense had looked at the teams and the tournament they would know that this is a totally new tournament that doesn't take into account the regional factors in Pakistan domestic cricket. Nobody had a right to be called a minnow and nobody had a right to be called favourite.

Next year Quetta and zalmi will ne the big guns and then we can start talking about favourites!!

Why do you say so - the teams were picked in a draft so how do larger cities have an advantage here?

#1 plays #2, and the loser plays winner of the match between #3 and #4.

Basically play-offs allow either #1 or #2 a second chance for their consistent performances throughout the league stage, which is the whole purpose of it.

IPL follows the same model.

Fair point. However the player reputation and on paper form take precedence when an unknown tournament/match is played. I guess people rated Lahore on the reputation of some of the players. The key to club sport is for the team to click as a unit and have the combination going. Delhi daredevils for e.g have till date never got any combination going for them. I hope LQ learn from this and sort it out.

Why do you say so - the teams were picked in a draft so how do larger cities have an advantage here?

Sure - I get that - the players were drafted and there was a cap on spending - that's great.

However, Quetta in particular were always seen as the 'under dogs' prior to the PSL. Peshawar to a certain extent were the same, whilst the big city teams like Karachi, Lahore & Islamabad were attracting a lot of hype and attention - specially in the media and consequently amongst fans as well.

Meanwhile, even if you look at the price the franchises are bought at - Karachi and Lahore specially were seen as the 'big buys' and attracted significantly larger investments compared to the other teams - both teams being both for $25million dollars.

It's ironic - and in my opinion a good thing - that the smaller teams like Peshawar ($16million), Islamabad ($15million) and table toppers & the cheapest franchise Quetta ($11million) have all qualified for the next stage, whilst it is Karachi & Lahore who are left to fight it out for the last spot in the Play Offs with 1 group game left.

Do not get me wrong - there is nothing wrong with franchises being bought for big amounts and for having large investments made in them - in fact this is surely a good thing for Pakistani cricket. However, I also think it is a great thing for the PSL that the more expensive franchises don't automatically result in better players, coaches, training facilities and consequently results. The team which have attracted smaller investments are in the exact same standing as the teams who have attracted larger investments and in my opinion that is great.

I am not very familiar with the funding of the franchises in PSL thats why i am asking - did Lahore & Karachi had more money to spend on players? I thought their higher valuation is more because of larger crowd following and larger potential marketing reach.

But if they didnt have more money to spend on players & coaches - then they dont have unfair advantage. In that PSL is quite different from English or European football.

Yup you are absolutely correct from my understanding :)

And that's what I'm pointing out as well - there is this difference between PSL and English/Euorpean football which is good to see. The amount of money the owner of the team has doesn't really influence anything going on, on the field which is good to see.

That's also what I meant by "smaller teams" :)

They can.

2nd Playoff: 2nd Team vs 3rd Team
3rd Playoff: Winner of 2nd Playoff vs Loser of 1st Playoff. -> Winner to the final

I think it's quite good compared to the usual 2 semi-finals schedule.

Go Team Zalmi!

For atmosphere, Zalmi in finals would be best for PSL I think.

But I really like the underdog story of Quetta, how they were built, managed, and owned

Btw is there a way both those teams play in final or no?

Both teams can play the final (most likely would)

1st playoff is b/w Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators. Supposedly, if Zalmi wins they would go through to the final.
2nd plaoff is b/w united and Kings.

Suppose if Islamabad United wins, the united would play Gladiators and whoever wins would go to the finals.

Is this the first pre-game thread of PSL?

We have had matches in such quick succession that I don't think we actually had time to discuss them

I think if it were held in Pakistan we wouldn't have so many in quick succession, only reason I can think of is that every match was at same location.

How the heck are Peshawar and Quetta minnow teams ?

They picked their team the best !

Karachi was a shocker ! Malik is the best known player and he is terribly out of form . Amir is just a few matches old after his comeback. The foreign players they picked are not great .

Quetta has a better team , Hoping they win..HOPE both Nawaz and Asghar do well

Peshawar Zalmi vs Quetta Gladiators | 1st Playoff | 19th Feb | Dubai | Pre-game thread

I have a feeling that the team batting first will get to a score of around 160.

Come on Zalmi's - let's do this for the APS boys.

Ya this statement is so unfair :( we are all Pakistanis and APS boys are Shaheed indeed lekin ab mein tumhary baat kay agay Quetta ko kaisay support karron :( :(

Quetta have too many big players to handle pressure situation so Zalmi stand no chances against KP, Sanga the best players under pressure and don't forget Elliot he loves these situations too

Anything less than 180 will be hard to defend here the curator had a break to tune the pitch so it's going to be a bat first and put scorecard pressure pitch.

hahahaha

Jump over to the Zalmi's and let's support those boys. :zalmis

Let's see how good the crowd is..anything less than 80% full on Friday is a disappointment

I loved the matches in Sharjah, the pitches were better and the ground was nearly full in all the matches.

Dubai is boring
