Hi guys.

I’ve been fortunate enough to travel enough but not so fortunate enough to have captured some moments with a quality DSLR camera.

I don’t have much knowledge on such things but would like a DSLR which has 4k feature included for vlogging purposes - not just ability to take pictures.

My budget is about £650-£700. I would appreciate if you all can advise me on some elite cameras within that price range.

Thanks. :)

If you really are looking for some quality captures, make sure that you are willing to spend a good chunk of your budget on a suitable lens too.

2 years ago, I went with a Nikon D7200 (which indeed was a good long term investment), but all I had with it was a 18-200mm kit lens. My budget didn't allow me extra lens. Turned out that even a Nikon D5200 would have given me far better photography results if I spent the extra money on some suitable lens. So if this is all you have for budget, I suggest that approach for a beginner.

As for vlogging needs, I have heard good things about Panasonic Lumix series, check them out. Some of them are quite expensive, but Sony and Panasonic mirror less DSLRs have really caught on with a lot of Vloggers. You can expect some good discounts in tomorrow's Amazon Prime Day sale, so keep an eye!

Canon 70D

Very good DSLR. It’s the lens that will burn a hole on your pocket..if you want high quality pics..a good lens is a must.

I currently own a 70-200mm lens (£800) & 50mm (around £100)

Yes I heard the lense matters a lot. Looks like I will need to save a lot more since lense is the crucial bit. I often see deals with lenses too so will check them out.

I think what I’ll do is buy a camera now - and perhaps invest in a solid lense in December or so. :)

Cannon is your safest buy, they have a lot of accessories and cover a wide range of quality lenses.

Be sure that you want a DSLR before you buy, sometimes its better to get a good point and shoot which under most circumstances can deliver acceptable quality pics.

Are you sure you want a DSLR? What kinda vlogging do you do? Are you looking for a camera you can take everywhere?

It’s hard to suggest a camera without knowing the answers to those questions. A DSLR isn’t always the best option bro. Mirrorless cameras are taking over the market. If you can tell us how you plan to use the camera we’d be able to give better answers.

Sure thing brother.

So I’m looking to use the camera solely for travelling purposes. So vlogging my journeys and taking pictures of scenery, landscape etc.

I have a drone and my channel is really about promoting lowkey places ie Hunza Valley, Fairy Meadows and wherever I travel.

I mean it doesn’t have to be a DSLR - but I thought it would be wise to invest in them. I would really like the video to be in 4k as my drone is 4k compatible. :)

K bro things are a lot clearer now. You’re a travel vlogger. I’d remove DSLR from the options. DSLRs aren’t designed for casual travel vlogging and carrying a dslr camera around is a pita. It’s big and it’s heavy. You’ll have to carry a large bag everywhere. There is this general perception that DSLRs produce the best quality images. It’s true at the higher end but below that level, a mirrorless camera might just be the best solution. You’d be surprised to see the quality of images taken using a mirrorless camera that fits into your pocket or a small pouch. They can match and sometimes exceed the quality of images taken with a low end/mid range DSLR. I still remember my friend’s A6000 :). Most models support lenses and you can mount lenses using adapters too. But honestly you don’t need many lenses for landscape photography.

Mirrorless cameras can produce exceptionally good videos too. Micro four thirds are excellent for videos. But, you should consider buying an action camera like GoPro too if you plan to use a drone or capture videos when you’re moving. It’s built with that sole purpose in mind and does that job very well. You can accommodate both by stretching your budget a little or you can buy the action camera later.

SLR cameras were never designed with videography in mind and most models still aren’t very good at it.

That G85 you mentioned is a very good camera. Image stabilisation is a big plus. And that 12-60mm kit lens would be enough for most situations. I don’t think you’d need a GoPro if you buy that one. Don’t forget to read the reviews before buying. Good luck!

I would'nt to be fair. Micor 4/3 sensors are small thus handle low light not as well as crop (aps) or full frame sensors.

the main factor when getting a camera for me is its low light performance. flash can make images look flat and unless you know how to use the flash properly the images will be nothing to write home about.

stick to Nikon or Canon.

Im a professional wedding photographer and use Nikon cameras. Canon in all fairness are just as good. Both have a number of accessories but once you buy in to an eco system its hard to move across, unless you want to sell all your gear and start again.

im not too familiar with the low end DSLRs but if you post links up I can give my opinion if that helps.

Thanks for the solid feedback fellas, highly appreciated.

Seems like the DMC G85 is a good Camera according to my criteria but the low light may be a issue. How much of a issue would it be?

Also, thoughts on this?

K bro lemme explain. Sensor size is actually important and it often determines the price of the camera. Pros use full frame (35mm sensor) cameras. It’s far superior to the crop sensors used in most low end/mid range DSLRs. A micro four third sensor is a bit smaller than the crop sensor. But the difference in quality is actually insignificant due to several technical reasons. Another point is the flexibility of the 4/3 and its strength when it comes to videography. There are many reasons why it’s so widely used. You can google it. If you’re still confused or worried about it, here’s an article : https://petapixel.com/2017/03/24/battle-micro-43-camera-outsold-full-frame-dslr/

That article isn’t trying to establish that a 4/3 is better than a very expensive full frame camera but it explains the capability and the flexibility of the sensor.

I’m telling you again bro, it’s not wise to consider a DSLR if you plan to capture videos very often. It isn’t designed for it.

Regarding the camera, it’s very difficult to say how good a camera is without using it and seeing the results. One can only make some general observations based on the specs. There are plenty of reviews on the internet written by people who have tested these cameras. That G85 is a very good mirrorless camera. I’ve read the reviews. Let us know if there’s some confusion.

PS: don’t forget to read the comments below that article. Some interesting discussions there.

While we are on the topic of photography, the cameras on the cellphones these days have come a long way and exponentially improve each year. Obviously they cannot compete with DSLRs but they offer convenience and rapid deployability, something that is not possible with a professional camera.

I recently upgraded my phone from a One Plus 3 to Google Pixel 2 XL and my word the camera is just WOW. It was rated as best camera on a phone in 2017, excited to see how the Google/Apple/Samsung cameras perform this year.

Canon/Nikon should peddle in this market and bring out camera focused phones which rivals the DSLR in quality. That would surely be a hit with photography enthusiasts.
