What's new

[PICS/VIDS] Political banners against Pakistan Government flown over Headingley - Is this right?

The more people get annoyed about a meaningless banner in the sky the more likely it will happen again.

People should have just laughed it off and ignored it.

Or counter it at another match with something clever and witty - it doesn’t cost much to carry out such a stunt.

Its incitment. People are there to watch cricket and some disgusting person, most likely an Indian decided to remind the people of the terrorism inflicted in their nation. Its possible some have had family members killed or hurt in such incidents by the BLA terrorists.

When India plays again, Pakistanis should send multiple planes over with 'stop Indian terrorism in Kashmir ' slogans and wear Free Kashmir t-shirts in the ground. Im sure Indians will see this as meaningless too.

I don't think Indians were behind the banner, otherwise we would have seen something similar in the Pakistan v India encounter.

This was obviously done by Afghans to rile up Pakistanis. No one hates us more than they do, so would suggest some of you ought to use your common sense.

We need to get out of this default mindset of blaming India.

FYI: I despise Modi and what his govt did prior to the elections.

LAtest information on the plane that flew the controversial banner, permission was requested during the India-Pakistan match which was rejected by Chief Constable of Greater Manchester.

Pak-Afghan ICC match: Manchester company behind controversial banners

HEADINGLY, Leeds: An unauthorized airplane flew over the Headingly Cricket Ground during an ICC match between Pakiastan and Afghanistan carrying controversial banners.

The incident was followed by violent scenes outside the cricket ground between supporters of the two teams. Police have taken two persons in custody. Footage of the brawl has emerged on the social media.

While Pakistan were looking to strengthen their chances of reaching the semifinals of the 2019 championship in their penultimate match before playing their last fixture against Bangladesh, an airplane flew overhead towing the messages “Justice for Balochistan” and “Help end disappearances in Pakistan”.

An ICC source told the media that the “aircraft was unauthorized” and said that Leeds air traffic will investigate the matter.

Leeds Air Control, however, said they were not aware of the incident and had no prior instructions preventing the operator from allowing the plane to fly over the ground with the banners.

Interestingly, a similar attempt by a Manchester-based company, Arabian Nites (Manchester) Limited to fly “Justice for Balochistan” banner was thwarted by the British High Court Judge, Mr Justice Murray, in a judicial review.

The court disallowed the company to fly these banners through Air Ads Limited after the Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police disallowed the activity stating the message was capable of inciting hatred if allowed to fly over Old Trafford where Pakistan was playing against India.

Political messages about Balochistan have constantly sprung up in the last couple of years on billboards, passenger busses and taxis in British cities. They were taken down when strong protests were lodged by members of the British Pakistani communities to relevant British authorities saying the activity, allegedly sponsored by third party financial backing, could harm inter-communities relations in British cities.

Who are Arabian nites? I only know of this name because of Shisha cafes in the UK. Surely it's not them as most of the visitors are Pakistanis?

This is nothing new.
I recall my Father telling me about the 1971 England v Pakistan Test Match in Birmingham when Zaheer scored 274.
This game was played with the backdrop of the East Pakistan independence War and 100's of Pro-independence Protestors(East Pakistani Bengalis) turned up and clashed with Pro Pakistani supporters.

Its not meaningless when youve fought a war for ten years. I would like to see your reaction or your fans reaction if we flew a banner over India vs England with a few choice words about the 27th of feb.

"Justice for Baluchistan" and "Help stop disappearances in Pakistan" are pretty benign statements in the grand scheme of things.

Sure if it was "Justice for Kashmir" and "Help stop disappearances in India" the other side would whine just as much but then they whine about everything anyway. Do you really want to be compared to that?

Just goes to show how insecure some people are if such banners trigger them.

If such innocuous statements are 'incitement' then that says more about the people who are incited about such things than anything else.

I'm not sure why people are getting all over hyped about this. It was just a silly banner flying around which nobody even noticed, except of course Indian media which was in damage control after the England vs India match.

If you're not aware, during the England-India match, several dozen pro Khalistan supporters were chanting Khalistan Zindabad and waving Punjab Referendum 2020 flags - most of them were from the human rights group "Sikhs For Justice" and were apparently escorted out of the stadium since political messages are not allowed INSIDE the stadium.

The banner being flown by a plane is just a sad attempt to salvage from self respect by the Indian High Commission in London, who insist that "Sikhs For Justice" is an ISI backed group, despite the fact zero evidence suggests any such link.

Here's the videos for those who want to see.

And another one.

Personally speaking, politics should stay out of cricket. It's pointless...neither do supporters or cricketers have any say in politics, so what exactly is the point?

But that being said, the banner being flown by the plane is almost 100% a response to the Khalistan activism during the England-India match, no doubt about it and you would be naive to think otherwise.

Try flying a banner over an Israeli match with Free Palestine on it, you may be arrested for breaking anti semitism laws or perhaps over a cricket ground in India as I mentioned. The Jewish and Hindus will be more upset, so your view regarding them would be worse.

if the plane has a code u can see who its registered to, pressure the company to release the information. might work, might not.

Doesnt need to be so complicated, the police can get the routes of all the planes and companies flying over that area at the time. Shouldn't be a problem.

I'm sure they all have to keep meticulous records.

Is England such a pathetic country that they have failed to stop it for the 3rd time in a row?

World Cup Chiefs Push for No-fly Zone After Plane Protest at Edgbaston

Tournament chiefs said they were working with authorities to establish a no-fly zone over Lord's for the World Cup final after political banners were flown in Birmingham during Thursday's semi-final between England and Australia.

The signs read "World must speak up for Balochistan" and "Help end disappearances in Pakistan".

It follows similar incidents earlier in the tournament in England and Wales, with the International Cricket Council distancing itself from the protests.

"We do not condone any sort of political messages at the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup," the ICC said in a statement.

"We have worked with local police forces around the country throughout the tournament to prevent the World Cup being used as a platform for political protests.

"So we are incredibly disappointed these flights continue to take place. We are working very closely with the relevant agencies to make sure there is an air exclusion zone in place for manned and unmanned flights during the (Sunday's) final at Lord's."

The sky above Old Trafford was declared a "no-fly zone" for the first semi-final between India and New Zealand this week after a light aircraft flew banners over Headingley during India's match against Sri Lanka reading "#Justice for Kashmir" and "India stop genocide & free Kashmir".

A "Justice for Balochistan" banner was flown over Headingley during the Pakistan-Afghanistan match last month, where police had to intervene following violent clashes between fans.

Balochistan, Pakistan's largest and poorest province, which borders Afghanistan and Iran, is rife with Islamist, separatist and sectarian insurgencies.

The Pakistani military has been waging war on militants there since 2004, and security forces are frequently targeted.

Police made two arrests at the first semi-final on Tuesday but both men were released without charge.

Fans, apparently Sikh separatists, wore T-shirts and held banners demanding a referendum on an independent homeland to be carved out of India.

World Cup final: Lord's to be 'no-fly zone' for England vs New Zealand clash

As England and New Zealand get ready to lock horns in the ongoing ICC Men's Cricket World Cup final on Sunday, the Lord's Cricket Ground has been declared as a 'no fly zone' for both the match day (July 14) and reserve day (July 15).

"It will be a no-fly zone at Lord's tomorrow, keeping in mind the charted flight political messages incident. ICC has requested the concerned authority for the same. Lord's will remain a no-fly zone for both the match day and reserve day (July 14 and 15)," an ICC source said told ANI.

A "World must speak up for Balochistan" banner flew over Edgbaston during the semifinal between England and Australia on Thursday. It was the third instance of a plane being used for political messages in the World Cup.

Earlier, 'Justice for Balochistan' banners flew over Headingley during Pakistan's match against Afghanistan and couple of planes displayed banner related to Kashmir over the same stadium during India's match against Sri Lanka.

The first semifinal between India and New Zealand, the airspace over Old Trafford was shut down keeping the unfurling of political messages in mind.

Before the semifinal clash, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) had written to the BCCI that airspace over Old Trafford, in Manchester will remain shut during the semifinal clash. ECB had assured BCCI that the Old Trafford stadium will be a no-fly zone for the match.

In India's last group match against Sri Lanka, aircraft flew over the ground with anti-India banners tailing them, including slogans on the Kashmir issue. After the incident, BCCI had filed a complaint with the ICC.

So if a banner talking about ending genocide in Kashmir is termed "anti-India", why isn't a banner talking about "disappearances in Balochistan" termed "anti-Pakistan". Gotta love the hypocrisy Indians live with.

Also, I wonder why this Indian publication never bothered mentioning what the Kashmir banners stated. Sach karwa hotha hai shayed?

So we have British Police acting quick to stop banners when it comes to White Lives Matter but a lot of hesitancy when it came to political stuff vs Pakistan or India - why is that?
