[PICS/VIDS] What did he give him? Debate erupts over ‘interesting’ Jadeja moment during first Test

A debate has erupted after vision of a questionable moment was spotted during the first innings of the first Test between Australia and India.

Former Australian Test captain Tim Paine was among those to take note of what Ravindra Jadeja was doing ahead of one of his overs.

With Alex Carey and Peter Handscomb at the crease and the Aussies at 120-5, Jadeja came in for his 16th over already sitting with figures of 3-30.

The TV broadcast captured Jadeja appearing to either take something off the hand of one of his teammates, or from inside his hand, with his right hand.

He then rubbed his hands and finger near and around the ball though it was uncertain what exactly was happening - some suggesting he was putting something on his spinning finger.

When footage of the moment was shared with Paine on Twitter, he replied: “Interesting.”

“What is it he is putting on his spinning finger? Never ever seen this,” England great Michael Vaughan tweeted.

Jadeja finished with figures of 5-47 as the Australians were bowled out for 177, with India 1-77 at stumps at the conclusion of day one.

India is desperate. First the pitch, now they are tempering the ball. What a joke. Than they say we are the best test side from Asia and we are equivalent to the Australia side...........

This kind of things happen in baseball.

The Indians have refuted your claims, saying Jadeja was applying pain-relieving ointment (which you can see, & spinners do have sore fingers). Come out with something new now - pitch, DRS and now this, in on the 1st day of the series Jadeja .Cc vikrant Gupta

As visuals of Ravindra Jadeja applying some solution on his left index finger on the opening day of the first Test against Australia surfaced on social media, former Australia captain Tim Paine called it “interesting” leading to debates on Australian media as to what the Indian spinner was doing. However, putting all theories to rest, sources in the know told The Indian Express that Jadeja was just applying an “ointment for callus finger”.

Although the visuals raised eye-brows, sources in the know revealed that it is common practice and it is allowed in ICC’s playing conditions.

It is understood that the activity didn’t come to the suspicion of the match officials. It is understood that certain batsmen even use gripping cream between overs to keep their hands moisture and it is totally allowed by the ICC.

“What do you think of this @tdpaine36 Looks like one player giving grippo to the bowler and him rubbing it all over his spinning finger to me. Thoughts?” wrote a Twitter user to which Paine responded in one word.

In case of bowlers, some of the spinners who return to action after a long period, may face tender issues in their index finger and to avoid the cracks, use the cream.

In a footage, shared on twitter, Jadeja is seen taking something from Mohammed Siraj’s hand and applying it on his left index finger. The cameras then displayed the all-rounder seemingly rubbing it on his bowling finger for a short period while being in discussion with captain Rohit Sharma. In this case, Siraj had the ointment on his finger and Jadeja scooped it onto his fingers.

“What do you think of this @tdpaine36 Looks like one player giving grippo to the bowler and him rubbing it all over his spinning finger to me. Thoughts?” wrote a Twitter user @dags_L to which Paine responded, “interesting.” Soon, the former England captain Michael Vaughan tweeted: ‘What is it he is putting on his spinning finger ? Never ever seen this …’

Playing a Test for India for the first time since July 2022 and making his comeback to international cricket following a knee injury, Jadeja finished with figures of 22-8-47-5 as Australia were bowled out for 177.

Jadeja was the pick of the Indian bowlers accounting for the key wickets of Marnus Labuchagne and Steve Smith in the second session, which led to a collapse.

The all-rounder mixed his stock ball, turning away from the right hander and odd one, going straight to dismiss the likes of Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne on his way to picking a fifer, inspiring a first day-third session collapse of Australia.

When did Australian ex-cricketers have become sore losers. They all got out to striaght balls lol

Seems like he borrowed a pinch of perspire there :)

when you get ointment from the doctor, he first applies it on his arm, and than you scrap it off of him to apply on yourself?

Desperation for what? India does not need to manipulate the pitch and the ball to beat Australia. That is normal business for them.

India have humiliated Australia twice in a row in Australia. India owns Australia.

Australia knows they are not good enough to compete with India home and away and hence they are crying and moaning left right and center.

Australia is a proud and arrogant cricket nation but their egos have been badly bruised by India over the last few years.

Ravindra Jadeja was away from cricket for almost five months and he isn’t used to bowling long spells like the one he did today. That is why he was applying the pain-relief ointment on his sore fingers.

India doesn't need to tamper with the ball to beat Australia in home conditions. Bit rich coming from the Australians themselves.

Aussies always earned their respect for their competitive approach. Indian fans regardless of their better performance against Australia have great respect for Aussie cricketing culture. But all these excuses don't really reflect on them very well. This is coming from cricket australia itself which makes it look worse

He really shouldn't be applying it to his hand whilst holding the ball/actively bowling really regardless of his intent. It's inevitably going to get on the ball as well.

If its allowed under ICC Playing conditions then its allowed.

so much cricket happened and since india is ahead this is what makes headlines everywhere.

They take the permission from ICC officials but this is still unconfirmed

huh i don't know why is it difficult for bcci to buy out nithin menon when erasmus already works under their instructions, as found out brilliantly by you. should've just gone with that option instead of all these ointments and all.
:facepalm watch so much cricket, only to judge the game as a bitter biased rookie.

Seems like a nothing incident.

This is usually the style of tabloid coverage that Pakistan would get when touring England.

When you go to a doctor and ask for oitment, does he first rub it on himself and than you scrap it for yourself afterwards?

It's not something I have experienced in the UK or Pakistan.

Perhaps an Indian poster can confirm if their doctors rub themselves and then apply the resultant ointment onto them. I think we have some doctors like Cricketjoshilla who will be able to confirm if they rub themselves when tending to a patient. If they answer in the affirmative will you revoke your stance?

Cultural differences aside I don't think there was anything sinister here and certainty not something that could aid a spinner.

Why the hell will he tamper the ball when he was the bowler (with the camera on him) near the umpire, at a stage when no pacer was going to bowl much anyway and when they were already on top. No one is that stupid.

The poor guy was applying a pain relief ointment. He's making a comeback and bowled so many overs after a long time. The sore losers in Australian media spun this to hide their embarrassment on day 1. First it was the 'pitch doctoring', then 'rigged DRS' and now this non-sense.

BTW India doesn't need ball tampering to win in India. Can't wait for the Aussie cry babies to get smashed 4-0 now. I hope Aus wins all the tosses too like today. That will be the icing on the cake.

You are right. We are not equivalent but better than them as we beat them at their home turf the last two times while you can only dream about it. Whats wrong with the pitch? Does India have a new technology wherein they changed its nature when it was our turn to bat by pressing a button? Unlike Pakistan we atleast produce pitches that produce results and not tame draws in fear of losing at home. Teams often resort to tactics be it applying vaseline etc. (Some have even bitten the ball like an apple) If ICC finds it wrong then they will change teh rules accordingly. As far as I know there is a rule that ball shouldn't be tampered but not sure if there is a rule that says you shouldn't apply anything to your fingers. If there indeed is such a rule then ICC will take the appropriate action.

What has this thread got to do with Pakistan?

yes i will revoke my stance, because if thats what indian doctors do than it is understandable that why a player would first rub oitment on his body instead of delivering the tube and the other player than scrap it off of him

This type of cheating is quite common in baseball

Its you who wondered away saying India claims to be better than Australia.

Firstly, its funny that Fox Sports suddenly becomes the gospel of truth when its credibility was questioned recently when it tweeted on a audio tape controversy. Fox sports comments on Indian pitches while in December Australia produced a pitch where test match was done and dusted in 6 sessions and also recieved 2 demerit points for it.

Secondly, why haven't the Australian team formally lodged a complaint if this indeed was a case of ball tampering? Has the match referee too been bought by BCCI?

Thirdly, this is not the 90s where ball tampering was rampant. Now there are 20 cameras following the ball. Moreover now the ball needs to be handed to the umpire after every over. The umpires can easily know if its tampered unless you accuse the umpires to be sold to BCCI.

India has lost just 2 tests in the decade. They dont need to resort to such tactics especially gainst an Aussie side that they beat in their home.

have you ever gotten oitment from a doctor where he first rubs it on his own body and than you touch his body to scrap off the used oitment and than apply it on yourself?

it has nothing to do with fox, you are again wondering away. We have a footage in OP.

You can use example of 90s all you want, yet Tendulkar was caught doing ball tempering once Australia aswell. Hence, when it comes to cheating, camera doesnt matter.

They dont need to resort to it, yet they did.. Maybe someone is desperate because of the 36 all out....

Now this is selective amnesia. You remember 36 all oiut but not India winning the series at Gabba. Well, I give that to you as its painful to remmeber that. 36 all out makes the victory more sweet and incredible for us as India rose from the lowest rung. Looks like a classic case of sour grapes for you as you try to undermine with the 36 all out reminder.

When was sachin caught ball tampering ever? In South Africa 2003 series there was a controversy regarding trying to remove dirt between the seams of the ball but an enquiry cleared him of any ball tampering.

Whether he applies the ointment himself and scraps it of some one else or even licks it and applies it with his tongue its his wish. Is it written somewhere that it shuouldn't be done? Why is Aussie team silent on this? Why has Match Referee not summoned Jadeja for an explaination if there is conclusive evidence like teh sandpaper gate?

There is no real logical explanation on what kind of advantage a player gets by applying ointment to his index finger lol Just randomly throw accusations hoping someone would stick. watering of pitch, dry wicket, DRS, ball tampering. Australia involved in ball atmpering for reversing of the ball.

no its not his wish. In Baseball players rub pine tar on their arms so that when they go on the field they could rub taht tar off and apply it on the ball to get better grip.

Next thing you would be saying that a player can carry sandpaper in their pocket, its their wish.

no one rubs oitmit on their own skin and than the other player scraps it off and applies it on his body as its unhygenic and doesnt make sense as you can just bring in a tube. Also both players would need similar issues to be using the same oitment.

Anyways, if doctors rub it on their body and patients than scrap it off than I am ready to change my stance and agree with you that it was oitment and because doctors in India do such things, thus its only natural an Indian cricketer did the same.

there is no logical explaination that why would someone not take oitment from a tube but instead have person a rub it on his own body so that person b can scrap it off of him.

No one knows what substance that was. Could have been pine tar. Pine tar is used to get grip on a ball.

Crying feels good , i like it .Still 20 days are there (4test) .We will get more sooking every end of the day.

The point here is not whether its unhygenic or if doctors would do the same. the question is if its a rule or not. Using a sandpaper or any substance to change the nature of the ball is illegal. Applying ointment to your fin ger isn't. How is applies is his personal coice be it hygenic or unhygenic.

He applied to his finger. not ball. He even transffered the ball to his right hand and still twiddling his thumb. There is no action of anything transferring to the ball.

Why didn't the physio/doctor come out and apply the pain relief. Its not hygienic anyways.

I'm surprised that ICC's playing conditions allow this.

Australians should be the last people to make a mountain out of a molehill from something this insignificant. Wasn't that long ago when one of their players was using sandpaper to tamper a ball in plain sight.

He's definitely using sticky glue to get a better grip of the ball, baseball players get caught doing this all the time. Who takes ointment from someone else's hand to put on theirs lol.

Did you try and wonder why he took it off Siraj and not carry it with himself when he could have quietly put it on his finger while fielding on the boundary or somewhere?

:))

Only Day 1 and the brigade is out to try and discredit what they already fear.

The logical conclusion to draw is - Siraj was on the boundary when someone passed him the ointment. Rather than carrying the tube with him in his pocket, he did the easy thing of applying some on his hand like it were a little saucer.

That's all there seems to it. The Vaughan troll is out again and so are his seasonal fans.

The main purpose of the tampering with the ball is to get the reverse swing. Right?

Below is the update from cricinfo about the incident.

Immediately after play ended on the first day, Jadeja along with India captain Rohit Sharma and the team manager, were shown a video clip of Jadeja's actions. Pycroft, it is understood, wanted to just inform them about the incident and no charge has been laid against Jadeja.

While the incident triggered debates on social and mainstream media, it is learned that the Australia team had not brought the matter to the attention of the match referee. According to the playing conditions, the match referee can independently probe such incidents without needing a complaint to be lodged. And under the Laws of Cricket, the bowler needs the umpire's permission to apply any sort of substance on their hands to ensure the condition of the ball remains unaffected.

I think a lot of people takes it personal on these matters without discussing whats allowed and whts not. If the rulebook allows such actions then its fine. If not then match referee/umpires should deal with it.

First time I am hearing accusations on a spinner for tampering the ball. Not sure how much help that would be on a wicket which is already offering a lot to spinners. Also seems like a very desperate attempt by everyone to discredit any win by India by these controversies. The pitch wasn't bad and was offering a lot to Pacers as well with the new ball. It was incompetent batting by the Aussies who kept missing straight balls to get out. Some ridiculous shots were thrown in as well.

I would have agreed to the theory if India were going to bowl the pacers trying to get swing but that was never going to happen on this pitch. Very sad that the Aussies had to resort to this on just day 1. May be this will make the defeats hurt a bit less? The delusion that something nefarious was done to defeat them would probably get them to sleep better at night. Whatever the reason is I don't think India or BCCI would care. India will win the series and I hope will defeat Australia in WTC finals as well if they do get there.

Pitch tampering was the outfield on which Australia & South Africa played late last year where SA said it was dangerous to bat on.

Indians cheating with the pitch now with this

Yes, totally unacceptable! First pitch tampering, then messing with the ball, they bought the umpire and the match referee too. The right thing would be to award this Test to Australia who fought so hard to score 177 against the cheating Indians. They should also be reported to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) for further action. Deplorable!!

If this ointment is allowed (as suggested by some), they can easily start using a specialized formulation to rub onto the ball.

What's the rule on something like this?

Ointment is used on injured fingures, not on ball.Where did you see that?. Do you know what ball tampering is ,just go and watch sandpaper incident and afridi ball biting incident video.

Surely any ointment wouldve been used from the actual tub or tube

Why have they sneakily put it from the other fielders hand? Hardly hygienic is it

And why werent the umpires on the pitch at the time told if there was nothing suspicious about it? Surely anything like this has to be okd before use

Shastri as usual hiding the obvious when it comes to india Theres one thing being a indian supporter and totally another being a blind supporter

And even funnier thing is to look at how people on the social media are immediately turning into Hakeems, doctors, sanyasies and philosophers, to issue a verdict that it’s a pain relieving ointment (never seen to be used like this by anyone in the entire history of test cricket), while there is no statement issued by any team to clarify. But those on social media already knew what was it. lol

Aussies move from one conspiracy theory and some follow them religiously. My guess is INdia is tampering with air. Then grass tampering on the boundary.

Spinners have tampered with the ball in the past.

Monty Panesar admitted to using sun cream to tamper with the ball. Players have used mints too. It's not always about the rough side as you can also tamper with the other side too.

This is why the lack of clarity on the ointment is fascinating. I'm not saying India is cheating but they might have exposed a little loophole to bring stuff onto the field to work the ball.

If teams can use this ointment excuse, they can easily apply a fake "ointment" to the ball too. Just take a bit like Jadeja did, apply it to your finger, and then rub the finger against the shiny side. When asked, say it is an ointment that's allowed by the ICC.

If ointments are to be allowed, they should be given to the umpire. At least they can control the fact it is an approved ointment that's being applied and nothing else.

Could have done that in the presence of umpires rather than handing ammunition to cry babies.

Either way he did not apply anything directly to the ball.

Seems very sneaky . Our prerogative to prepare the pitch but I'm not a fan of such "ointments" or "creams" being surreptitiously applied to get better grip or to shine the ball etc.

Andy Pycroft is the same match referee who let Ashwin get away with his blatant violation in South Africa, not overly surprising.

i think thats the funny part. They themselves dont know what it is, but soon become experts to defend the player. Wannabe BCCI lawyers

Ravi Shastri:

At the start of Day 2 of the 1st Test, Star Sports highlighted Vaughan's reaction on Fox Cricket's tweet, but Shastri gave a blunt reaction before revealing that Jadeja was applying an ointment on his index finger.

“I have not heard much about it. I have asked two questions. Was there any problem with the Australian team? The answer was 'no'. Did the match referee come into play? He wad told about it, he cleared everything, matter ends. Why are we discussing anybody else? And to be honest, ointment as a reliever, the match referee would have been told if there was any decision to be taken or action, he would have taken it. By the way, on this track, you don't need anything, the ball will turn"

If i am right FOX sports is the one who made the news about Babar's chatting sesion and then they were forced to retract the story.

And a tribunal acquitted him.

Try again.

There is a matter of "court of public opinion" too - something which you and I can take part in it with evidence that we can see and one that is not influenced by any outside pressures.

Remember this, just because the word India is mentioned does not require a full battle-to-death defence in every case.

You need to be open to recognizing your fallibilities and move on.

This forum is a great place for this as people from different nationalities do that all the time.

Coming back to this, the evidence as you will agree looks very convincing.

Now whether we believe the Indian team's statements is another issue and you can dispute that with your own evidence.

There is a reason why there are courts around the world to decide disputes and issues and things are not decided in court of public opinion.

Inherent bias is a bigger problem than any outside pressure.

The opposition team has not raised any issue when they were very eager to talk about the slightest of issues.

The ICC has not raised any issue.

I guess the ICC knows its rules.

Convincing evidence? Well if its part of the ICC Playing conditions its fair.

Are you not able to make your own judgement? Can we have that please instead of a FO communique?
