Sri Lanka won by 63 runs
Prabath Jayasuriya took five wickets to steer Sri Lanka to a 63-run victory Monday over New Zealand on the final morning of the first Test in Galle. Set a target of 275 to win, the Black Caps were bowled out for 211 less than 15 minutes after play resumed from overnight, with Rachin Ravindra top-scoring on 92. Ravindra had finished on Sunday waging a lone battle on a sharply turning pitch in Galle, where the tourists had lost all four of their previous Test encounters.

Good effort from Rachin despite not being able to take his team home. He has shown he is here to stay in test cricket

Southee lauds youngsters despite loss in the first Test against Sri Lanka

New Zealand captain Tim Southee focused on the positives despite his team's defeat to Sri Lanka in Galle.

New Zealand’s woes at Galle continued with the team suffering their fifth consecutive Test defeat at the venue, as Sri Lanka claimed a 63-run victory in the series opener

Sri Lanka required just two wickets on the final day, defending 68 runs, with Rachin Ravindra standing in their way on an unbeaten 91 from the previous night.

At just 24, Ravindra has already taken the cricketing world by storm since his debut. His meteoric rise, especially in tough sub-continental conditions, has caught attention. In India, he was New Zealand’s standout performer at the 2023 Men’s Cricket World Cup, racking up 578 runs across 10 matches.

Capping off his breakout year in 2023, Rachin Ravindra was named the ICC Men’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year.

However, despite his best efforts the previous day in Galle, Ravindra could only add one more run to his score on Day 5 before being trapped LBW by Prabath Jayasuriya. Jayasuriya went on to dismiss Ajaz Patel, securing his five-wicket haul and sealing the victory for Sri Lanka.

New Zealand captain Tim Southee heaped praise on Ravindra, highlighting his ability to adapt and thrive in challenging conditions despite his limited experience.

"Rachin [Ravindra] kept us in the hunt with that chase," Southee said after the game. "We knew it was [a] tough ask, and that it was going to take something special, with the wicket taking a lot of turn in these last couple of days. It was a great knock in those conditions.

"It's not easy to bat - the ball was spinning, and doing all sorts [of things]. For a young guy without a lot of experience in this part of the world to go out and get 90-odd was great signs for him as well. He's another one that's an exceptional talent, and he's had a little taste of international cricket as well, and done exceptionally well.

“He's a great young kid with a good head on his shoulders."

Southee was equally impressed with fellow pacer Will O’Rourke, who, despite it being his first experience playing in the subcontinent and only his third Test, made the most of conditions typically unfavourable to fast bowlers.

O’Rourke took eight wickets in the match, including a five-wicket haul in the first innings, consistently hitting speeds over 140 km/h and looking dangerous throughout.

"Will [O’Rourke] has had a very short Test career so far, and he's certainly announced himself," Southee remarked. "We saw in New Zealand how dangerous he can be. He's got the skills to have a very good Test career.

“For him to come to his first Test in the subcontinent and walk away with a very impressive eight wickets for the match is nothing short of special. He's got a great head on his shoulders, and he's a big guy. So there's a lot to like about Will O'Rourke."

Following the defeat, New Zealand fell to fourth in the World Test Championship standings, while Sri Lanka moved up to third.

Sri Lanka add uncapped spinner ahead of second New Zealand Test

Off-spinner Nishan Peiris brought in as fast bowler Vishwa Fernando withdraws due to hamstring injury.

Nishan Peiris has been included in Sri Lanka's squad for the second Test with New Zealand after the withdrawal of Vishwa Fernando due to injury.

Fernando had developed a tightness in his right hamstring while practicing. The fast bowler, who last featured during Sri Lanka’s stellar win at the Oval, has been sent to the High Performance Center rehabilitation.

Vishwa had picked up 5/86 across the two innings in his last Test, at The Oval against England.

His replacement is off-spinner Nishan Peiris. The 27-year-old was in the Sri Lanka squad for their tour of Bangladesh but didn’t play a Test. Peiris has played 41 first-class fixtures and has 172 wickets at an average of 24.37.

Sri Lanka won an engaging first Test in Galle by 63 runs, with left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya playing a starring role with his 9/204 in the game.

The victory helped Sri Lanka leapfrog New Zealand in the World Test Championship standings. The Island nation are at the third place behind India and Australia with a point percentage of 50, whereas the Black Caps slip one spot to end at the fourth place with a tally of 42.86%.

Kiwi's unchanged , SL batting 14/1 atm

41/1 rain . Picking Nishan more for his batting than bowling is very defensive by SL .

Dinesh Chandimal is enjoying his batting atm. Playin at run-a-ball.

Sri Lanka has had a pretty solid day so far, Thanks to Chandimal's 96 who is still on the crease and making the work hard for the kiwis.

SL 180/2 (56)

190/2 in 60 ... KIWI dropping a easy catch & messing up a simple stumping be4 lunch has hurt them badly . SL look good for 450 .

Credit to Sri Lanka for the way they have played all series. But New Zealand do not like a very strong side anymore outside New Zealand, with the retirement of Boult, persistent injuries to Jamieson and an ageing and rapidly declining Conway at the top.

Southee will be gone soon too. And Williamson has more years behind him than infront of him. Will be interesting to see how New Zealand progress. I feel like Rachin Ravindra and Glenn Phillips will be two key players for him in the coming years.

What a day for Sri Lanka.

SL vs NZ, 2nd Test Day 1: Dinesh Chandimal Century Powers Sri Lanka to 306-3 Against New Zealand

Dinesh Chandimal’s century in Galle powered Sri Lanka to 306-3 at stumps on Thursday’s opening day of the second Test against New Zealand.

The left-hander was bowled by Glenn Phillips in the final session after hitting 15 boundaries in his knock of 116 — his sixth Test century at the picturesque venue and his 16th overall.

Angelo Mathews (78) and Kamindu Mendis (51) will resume for the hosts on the second day after both hitting half-centuries.

For Kamindu it was a world record eighth consecutive fifty since the 25-year-old’s debut against Australia at the same venue two years ago.

Mathews reached his own milestone by becoming only the sixth cricketer to make 2,000 Test runs at a single venue — a select group that includes the likes of Joe Root and Graham Gooch — on the notoriously bowler-friendly Galle pitch.

Chandimal made his ton with a single off Kiwi spinner Mitchell Santner in a knock that capitalised on loose deliveries.

He powered forwards after the end of his 122-run stand with Dimuth Karunaratne, who was run out on 46 and walked back to the pavilion fuming after a miscommunication between the pair.

New Zealand missed two opportunities to break the partnership earlier and failed to halt Sri Lanka’s momentum through the day.

Daryl Mitchell, fielding at slip, dropped two catches including a change to get Chandimal out on five in the fourth over.

Wicketkeeper Tom Blundell missed a stumping opportunity off Karunaratne.

Sri Lanka won the opening match of the two-Test series by 63 runs. New Zealand have not won any of their five previous Tests at Galle.

New Zealand players wore black armbands to honour the late Ian Taylor, who was the manager of the Black Caps from 1980 to 1990.

2 catches dropped off O'Rourke along with a wicket off a no ball, he could have had 3.
On a day where the opposition ended up with 300/3, that is brutal.

I feel a little bad for New Zealand. After getting beaten properly by Sri Lanka, they'll now travel to India to play a long 3 test series and get thrashed again. The players will be tired, homesick and disappointed after close to 2 months travelling around the subcontinent from venue to venue.

Kamindu Mendis is an unreal player, yet another 50 for him

Kiwis have been sloppy in the field though, could be an effect from the heat

what do you make of the pitch folks ? ps : avg turn on day 1 today was LESS than avg turn in previous Test ...

Sri Lanka is back. Playing like second best Asian team as they always were, could even be considered best Asian side considering resources.

Sri Lanka's batting got a good boost with Kamindu's inclusion.

Nissanka and Kamindu have good future while the veterans Matthews, Chandimal and Karunaratne are doing their job well. Also, they have appointed Kusal Mendis as full time keeper now so he gets more confidence as his batting average is well behind the other 6 players.

Great start for Sri Lanka yesterday but every day is a new day. Kiwis were sloppy yesterday in the field dropping easy catches but they can end this inning quickly.

Should keep SL under 400 now.

NZ players don't have anywhere near the workload that Indian/English players have.

True...the one difference I guess for New Zealanders is that they don't get to play as much at home - being T20 mercenaries and inability to dictate test tour timings keeps them travelling a bit more.

Mathews was struggling against Glenn and eventually got out for 88. Unlucky that he could not get to his hundred but it was a good inning nonetheless.

Hammering hope they go on to score 600 plus. And then put them in to bat. Get them out for 300 and under. Bat again score quick fire 200 declare. Then let them chase 500

Will o Rourke has been figured out it seems. Can't keep bowling short all the time. You will get smashed all over.

A bit murky atm & there was very heavy rain early morning ... 421/5 - Sl should declare at 500 & bowl 30 overs today .

The pitch is certainly less sporting than the 1 in previous Test & SL will need lot o overs to take 1st innings 10 wickets .

New Zealand have looked listless in Asia recently. Lost a test in Bangladesh. Probably gonna get whitewashed here. Definitely going to get hammered in India. Couldn't even win a test in Pakistan.

Kamindu Mendis has now become only the fourth batsman to get 1000 runs in 13 innings, and the first to do it since 1949 👏

NZ team is proper Home track bully .they only win at home and smashed all around the world.

SL are looking good to win 2-0. It should give them a big boost for ICC Test ranking.

Yeah but in the last few years they have still won in UAE, England and drawn in Sri Lanka. More recently though they have really regressed.

9 overs left max. I think Sri Lanka will fancy 1 more wicket and they will be happy.

I don't remember when was the last time SL scored 600 in a Test innings. Very well done.

Brings back memories of days of Sanga and Mahela (when they used to post big scores frequently).

Sri Lanka scored the third highest total against NZ at home in Tests

Highest total against NZ at home in Tests

643 - Pakistan, Lahore, 2002
607/6d - Australia, Brisbane, 1993
602/5d - Sri Lanka, Galle, 2024
585 - Australia, Brisbane, 2004

Yea on uber flat pitches. They never could score on pitches that had some turn or bounce.

Sanga is so overrated.

Not one match winnings in India Australia or SA.

Biggest stat padding.

He is the philandler of batsmen.

And people have the gall to compare him to sacchu lara and ponting etc. Lmao

Calm down edgelord.
Always calm. Why are you triggered? I laugh at these nonsensical claims about how sena bowlers get overrated after one half decent display. They get exposed on flatter pitches where there isn't much help.

Yea in like 2 test series. They will get clobbered in long test series.
Fact remains New Zealand are the only team to win a test series in England since 2014. That's an impressive achievement no matter how you slice it.

How many match-winning innings do Lara and Ponting have in Asia?

New Zealand stumble after Sri Lanka’s run fest in second Test

New Zealand were in a state of bother at the Stumps on Day 2 of the second Test after Sri Lanka piled up a humongous total, courtesy of centuries from Dinesh Chandimal, Kusal Mendis and rising star Kamindu Mendis.

The hosts declared their first innings at 602/5, minutes before the Stumps and after an unbeaten 200-run partnership between Kamindu and Kusal.

The visitors had a shaky start to their innings as they lost both their openers Tom Latham (2) and Devon Conway (9) inside nine overs.

Skipper Kane Williamson (6) and nightwatchman Ajaz Patel (0) did well to survive the remaining 5.4 overs and will now resume New Zealand’s innings at 22/2 on the third day.

Sri Lanka resumed their first innings at 306/3 with Mathews and Kamindu, unbeaten on 78 and 51 respectively.

The duo managed to add just 22 runs to their overnight partnership as Mathews perished for 88 as Glenn Phillips got him caught at square leg by William O’Rourke.

Dhananjaya de Silva joined Kamindu briefly for a 74-run partnership for the fifth wicket before he too, fell victim to Phillips. The skipper made 40 off 80 deliveries, hitting three fours and a six.

This was Phillips’ third wicket in the innings as he cleaned up Dinesh Chandimal on 116 in the third session of the opening day.

But New Zealand’s hopes of some fightback with the ball were dashed by a well-crafted partnership between Kamindu and Kusal.

When Sri Lanka captain de Silva called for the declaration, Kamindu was just 18 away from his maiden double century, while Kusal had just amassed his 10th Test century.

During his marathon 182-run knock, Kamindu breached the 1000 Test runs barrier.

He achieved the landmark in just 13 innings and drew level with Sir Don Bradman, while England’s Herbert Sutcliffe and West Indies’ Everton Weeks were the joint-fastest with 12 innings.

Sri Lanka lead the two-match series 1-0 and are eyeing their first series win over New Zealand since 2009. The home side won the opening Test by 63 runs.

Fact remains New Zealand are the only team to win a test series in England since 2014. That's an impressive achievement no matter how you slice it.
In a 2 test series. Not impressive tbh. Atleast 3 would have been better.

He's not overrated
Guess he needs to be rated highly to be overrated.

But on flat pitches I see him getting exposed just like most other kiwis.

en pitch bullies. Not even in SA. Definitely not in Australia.

A good start of the day for Sri Lanka as Jayasuriya gets the big wicket of Williamson. New Zealand struggling at 24/3.

A series win is a series win mate. I get your point but NZ can't be blamed for the fact that England thought they weren't important enough, and still lost to them

Really awful stuff from Kane Williamson. He continues to fail away from home until he gets to whack Pakistani and West Indies bowlers who are pretty much terrible in home conditions.

He is a fraud.

@RedwoodOriginal , in home conditions, Pakistan and West Indies are the worst team in Test cricket post Younis Khan's retirement. Hence, when you look at away record of all the players of this era, Williamson is the biggest fraud in away and neutral conditions such as Australia, South Africa, India, England and Sri Lanka.

Smith - 53
Root - 46
Kohli - 43
Pujara - 36
Rahane - 36
Azhar Ali - 34( excluding UAE for him)
Asad Shafiq - 34( same)
Stokes - 33
Matthews - 36
Williamson - 32

No world class player has such poor record away from home as Williamson does. If you filter away from home stats vs major countries, Williamson is simply not in the league of Smith, Root, Williamson and also not in the league of the other elite batters debuted in 2000s such as Sangakkara, de Villiers, Pietersen, Younis, Cook, G Smith, Amla or Clarke.

It looks like New Zealand are losing a wicket every over. They are now 6 down at 53.

Hahahah kiwis
That's what you get. Losers. Lanka is doing well.

O Rourke lmao
Kane lmao

Only the Hindu player saved their buttocks a bit earlier. Now that he got out early, whole fragile batting collapsed.

Sri Lanka vs india in lanka would be interesting right now.

Like I said. Philtrundler of batsmen.
Phiktrundler has an average better than wasim and Waqar. I rate him below both and I also rate him below Mitchell Johnson and shami and hazlewood.

Okay. And you are telling me this why? I don't recall saying anything about Williamson here

New Zealand are all out on just 88 and Sri Lanka have enforced the follow-on. It looks like there will be a big win here for Sri Lanka.

Hahaa King kaneeee
Lmao what a loser he is.
Most overrated. It was never big 4

It was big 2. Kohli is a distant 3rd.

Kane is like Max a misbah level player
