US President Donald Trump says he has ordered two nuclear submarines to "be positioned in the appropriate regions" in response to "highly provocative" comments by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

Trump said he acted "just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that. Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences, I hope this will not be one of those instances".

He did not say where the two submarines were being deployed.

Medvedev has recently threatened the US in response to Trump's ultimatum to Moscow to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine, or face tough sanctions.

Russia and the US possess the most nuclear arms in the world.

But Trump did not say whether he was referring to nuclear-powered or nuclear-armed submarines in his post on Truth Social.

In the post, the US president wrote: "Based on the highly provocative statements of the former president of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev, who is now the deputy chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, I have ordered two nuclear submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions".

Trump and Medvedev have recently been involved in a series of personal attacks against each other on social media.

On Monday, Medvedev accused Trump of playing "the ultimatum game with Russia".

In a post on X, he said "each new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war".

Earlier this month, Medvedev described Trump's ultimatum as "theatrical", saying that "Russia didn't care".

And writing on Telegram on Thursday, Medvedev warned of a "dead hand" threat - which some military analysts understood as a reference to the codename of Russia's retaliatory nuclear strikes control system.

On Thursday, Trump described Medvedev as "the failed former president of Russia, who thinks he's still president".

Trump also warned Medvedev to "watch his words", adding that "he's entering very dangerous territory!"

The White House told the BBC they had no further comment on Trump's remarks.

The Kremlin has not publicly commented on the latest statement by Trump.

trump trying to do another stunt...

first starts the war in the backdrop and then comes out mediating and taking credit for ceasefire...

Trump is a rookie in politics. He is an amateur and it shows.

It is remarkable how America elected this lunatic twice.

Imagine being dumb enough to vote for him
Well, it’s past now.

I have said many times before I don’t agree on all of his policies.

I am not as dumb as people who think I should have voted for Kamala the tool. Now don’t deny that you would have voted Kamala. 🤣

Trump’s submarine comments prompt Kremlin warning on nuclear tensions

Russia said on Monday that everyone should be "very, very careful" about nuclear rhetoric, responding to a statement by US President Donald Trump that he had ordered a repositioning of US nuclear submarines.

In its first public reaction to Trump's comments, the Kremlin played down their significance and said it was not looking to get into a public argument with him.

Trump said on Friday he had ordered two nuclear submarines to be moved to "the appropriate regions" in response to remarks from former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev about the risk of war between the nuclear-armed adversaries.

"In this case, it is obvious that American submarines are already on combat duty. This is an ongoing process, that’s the first thing," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

"But in general, of course, we would not want to get involved in such a controversy and would not want to comment on it in any way," he added. "Of course, we believe that everyone should be very, very careful with nuclear rhetoric."

The episode comes at a delicate moment, with Trump threatening to impose new sanctions on Russia and buyers of its oil, including India and China, unless President Vladimir Putin agrees by Friday to end the 3-1/2-year war in Ukraine.

Putin said last week that peace talks had made some positive progress but that Russia had the momentum in the war, signalling no shift in his position despite the looming deadline.

Trump has said he may send his envoy Steve Witkoff to Russia on Wednesday or Thursday. Witkoff has held long conversations with Putin on several previous visits but failed to persuade him to agree to a ceasefire.

The Kremlin declined to say if his latest proposed trip was taking place at Moscow's request, and did not say what it hoped might emerge from it.

"We are always happy to see Mr Witkoff in Moscow and we are always happy to have contacts with Mr Witkoff. We consider them important, meaningful and very useful," Peskov said.

Online spat

Trump, who frequently promised to end the war within 24 hours while campaigning for the US presidency last year, has spoken admiringly of Putin in the past but voiced increasing frustration with him of late.

Russia has stepped up the ferocity of its bombing attacks on Ukrainian cities, while three brief sessions of direct peace talks in Turkey have yielded no progress beyond exchanges of prisoners and war dead.

Some security analysts in both Russia and the West have criticised Trump for escalating an online spat with former president Medvedev - an arch-hawk whose statements are frequently designed to shock and provoke - to the point of publicly discussing US nuclear deployments.

Peskov, however, said Russia did not see Trump's statement as marking an escalation in nuclear tension.

"We do not believe that we are talking about any escalation now. It is clear that very complex, very sensitive issues are being discussed, which, of course, are perceived very emotionally by many people," he said.

Peskov declined to answer directly when asked whether the Kremlin had tried to warn Medvedev to tone down his online statements.

"The main thing, of course, is the position of President Putin," he said.

Russia exits nuclear treaty with US after Trump’s submarine deployment citing 'Nato policies'

In a major response to US President Donald Trump’s provocative move to deploy nuclear submarines near Russia, Moscow has formally announced its withdrawal from the Cold War-era Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty.

The Kremlin has blamed Trump’s deployment of nuclear submarines and “the actions of Western countries” for creating a “direct threat” to Russia’s security.

The INF Treaty, signed in 1987 by Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and US President Ronald Reagan, aimed to eliminate an entire class of ground-launched nuclear missiles with ranges between 500 and 5,500 kilometres. It effectively banned short- and medium-range nuclear weapons, significantly reducing the risk of nuclear confrontation in Europe.

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD
US already withdraw from the treaty
Although the United States withdrew from the treaty in 2019 during Trump’s first term, citing alleged Russian violations, Moscow had, at the time, refrained from deploying such missiles, stating it would only do so if Washington acted first.

Following the US exit, Russia declared a self-imposed moratorium, choosing not to position INF-range missiles unless provoked by American deployments.

That stance has now shifted. Russia’s latest move comes after Trump announced that two US Navy nuclear submarines had been deployed to “appropriate regions” near Russia, responding to what he called “highly provocative” remarks by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
