United States President Donald Trump has announced a 25 percent tariff on Indian goods, as well as an unspecified penalty for the country’s purchase of Russian oil and military equipment, as the unending war in Ukraine frustrates the White House.

Trump announced the trade moves – which he said will come into effect on Friday – on his Truth Social account on Wednesday, saying they are necessary to reverse a long-running trade imbalance.

The president also blamed India for buying military equipment and oil from Russia, which he said has enabled the war in Ukraine. As a result, he intends to charge an additional “penalty” starting on Friday as part of the launch of his administration’s revised tariffs on multiple countries.

Pakistan, by contrast, has seen its stock rise with the Trump administration before and after the conflict with India. In June, Trump hosted Pakistan’s army chief, Asim Munir, for lunch at the White House – the first time a US president has hosted a military chief from Pakistan who isn’t also the country’s head of state.

This is humiliation for India who claimed that USA is on their side.

Usa didnt help india during the war. No country did, and now they are imposing tariffs for conspiring with Russia.

Except harsher policies from now on.

None on Aus and Pakistan. Why would trump impose tarrifs on them?

Do you even know why trump imposed a tarrif? It has nothing to do with Russia or the farmers in india.

India and usa sources claim that the real reason is that India didnt give trump credit for stomping the war while Pakistan did. As a result trump's ego got in the way and he just needed to find an excuse.

He found one via Russia and hence imposed the tarrif

The real issue in America is the H1-B VISAS (largely to Indians) which has drastically changed the IT Job market, caused job loses to the Americans and lowered the competitive standards of silicone valley.

H1-B was supposed to be granted when locals are unable to fill a specific job role.

Silicon valley, and no issues have been caused to silicon valley issues are caused in IT, Silicon valley is for tech and cheap Master student labor has worked for them.

I agree it doesn’t work for IT market outside of tech overall as it keeps the salaries low.

More than H1b though biggest issue for US would be all companies setting up GCCs in India, even Costco plans to finish one by this year, India will be happy with GCCs than H1B, as in H1B they lose their educated youth.

Wanna know the irony, despite India being 100x larger. The amount that usa exported from india is roughly the same as Pakistan.

The reason its 91B for India is due to electronics speficially the import of Iphones as Apple now uses india to manufacture them.

The downturn in IT industry in US has already started and I won't be surprised if H1-B is shut down by Trump Administration when thousands of Americans scream about job loses (many of it due to AI).

There will be enormous backlash against businesses with GCCs in India too.

India won't be able to absorb so many Ex (H1-B) people from US, it doesn't have the capacity.

There is no backlash with GCC at all as India got all the back offices, with H1b it’s understandable I came through H1b as well and I think it was unfair because I didn't even do Masters in US and I’m certain they could had paid someone higher to get a local.

India has too many IT consultants but H1b ll not get cancelled but it will definitely become like for the highest salary.. if you have that on google alert you will see that.

Also US doesn’t plan to cancel H1bs, they plan to cancel the lottery system, once you get an h1b , it doesn’t get cancelled unless you really screw up or get fired.

The major issue is H1b lottery system that goes off to Indian companies, that needs a complete reform.

When I got my H1b, the 85k limit wasn’t even filled and right now 350-750k applications come into the lottery.

What humiliation? Trump said he will impose additional tariff on any country that purchases oil from Russia.
India did not heed to Trump’s warnings and did what was supposed to be in their interest.
I am sure India is feeling bad over the tariffs on them. 🤣
Trump changes his words in Tariffs quicker than you can say quick. Expect the tariffs to ease soon.

US used Pakistan like an old rag doll. Whenever they needed airbases, Pakistan let them use for dollars. Now they are laughing at India after their generals have time and again mortgaged their country’s assets to US.

India's dealings with US have always carried the weight of principle. From the earliest days of independence, India refused to align itself blindly with any power bloc despite being a poverty-stricken post-colonial state surrounded by hostile neighbors. It resisted military alliances, withstood economic pressures, and maintained a fiercely independent foreign policy. This posture continues today, even as India emerges as the world’s fourth-largest economy, with its own vision of multipolarity and sovereign strength.

The US by contrast has historically treated bilateral relations as arrangements of hierarchy. It expects allies to always comply and to always be thankful to the US for their attention. Americans rarely views others as equals, but rather see them as mere actors whose primary role is to amplify US interests in trade and geopolitics which is why you often see a cringe pattern of the so called US allies always parroting the American viewpoint. America positively reinforces this behaviour of the allies wagging their tail for them and making them feel like the centre of the Universe. This is precisely why India often frustrates them. India does not seek to be managed or be mentored. It refuses to endorse what it doesn’t believe in, whether it's UN votes, trade regimes, or geopolitical alignments.

Despite several rounds of strategic dialogue and shared goals in the Indo-Pacific, India has repeatedly reminded the US that it will not be told whom to trade with, whom to sanction, or how to run its economy. Whether it was continuing oil imports from Russia, refusing to join Western condemnations that do not align with its principles, or insisting on protecting domestic interests in global trade deals, India has made it clear that it will not serve as an instrument of someone else's foreign policy. This will be difficult for Pakistanis to understand or digest as such principled stance does not exist in their country which has been held captive by their military for decades.

India has drawn red lines even the most powerful American politicians hesitate to cross. Donald Trump, known for mocking allies publicly and humiliating world leaders whether from Europe, Africa, or Canada never dared to speak to India with the same brazenness. He understood that Indian democracy, and the fierce pride of its people, leaves no insult unanswered. India doesn’t merely elect leaders; it empowers them with the mandate to defend national pride, especially against foreign condescension. Within our country we may fight like cats and dogs but on the global stage we stand firmly behind our government whichsoever party or alliance they may belong to. US knows that, Trump knows that, which is why all of these economic sanctions are coming with sugar coated fake words of friendship. There is no friendship in actual, the US just knows whom they're talking about.

There's also the China angle. For years many in Washington saw India primarily as a pawn to counter China’s rise, a democratic foot soldier that could be cultivated and deployed in the new Cold War in Asia. But that illusion is now fading. The American establishment is slowly realizing that India is not here to play second fiddle in someone else’s rivalry. It is not just aiming to be the next China in terms of economic might it is carving out its own path to become a mega power in its own right. And unlike China, India’s rise is rooted in democracy, demographic scale, and soft power reach. That makes it even harder to control and even more threatening to the traditional Western order. My personal opinion is that America has found out it would be easier for them to manage China in the long run but an empowered democratic India at the global stage intimidates Americans like nothing else. This realization is causing a subtle but visible realignment of thought in the US. The penalties, tariffs, and constant commentary on India’s decisions are not merely about Russian oil, don't let that fool you, they are about asserting control, setting boundaries, and testing India’s resolve. In truth, it is a desperate early attempt to stall India's ascent. But that ascent is inevitable. India is no longer a country that seeks permission; it is a nation that defines its destiny.

Pakistan has repeatedly sacrificed its long-term interests in return for momentary geopolitical favor. Whether during the Cold War, the War on Terror, or in IMF negotiations, Islamabad has too often traded sovereignty for sustenance. It is not surprising, then, that those who live in strategic dependence cannot understand the pain and pride of strategic independence. Mocking India for standing up to the US is like mocking someone for choosing self-respect over servitude. India is not being penalized because it is weak. It is being challenged because it is strong. Strong enough to say no. Strong enough to chart its own course. And soon, strong enough that no one, not even a superpower will dare to try and tell it otherwise.

Pakistanis don't understand world politics, not really their fault as their purpose has always been to take orders and obey. They still fail to see that their country is just a pawn on the chess board that is used and abused when needed by the big powers, US/China.

When US feels India is not aligning to their interest, suddenly you will see newspaper articles and media attention showing Pakistan in a positive light and about how strong the support US/Pak relationship is.

The reality is Pakistan is nothing more than a rag towel that the US/China uses to cause nuisance for India and for their other personal needs and who benefits? A few men up top in the Pakistani military that sells the country out for money, foreign passports, properties in the western worlds, free education for their kids and families in the west etc.

I have always said Pakistan is a lost cause, no coming back, their military has ensured their citizens will never see a prosperous, and economically stable Pakistan...You will see all the bravado here about how great Pakistan is, Kashmir this, Palestine that lol rah rah, reality is Pakistan going further down the gutter every second by second, minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day, week by week, month by month, year by year...

Pakistan's destiny is sealed, they are a failure and will remain so till the end of time, no coming back...

It also opens up a door of opportunity for Pakistan. I'm confident that Pakistan is fully capable of exporting to the U.S. everything that India currently does. With the right planning, trade agreements, and investment in quality and infrastructure, there’s no reason why Pakistan can’t position itself as a strong alternative supplier in the same markets.
 
Very interesting time, India will have to razor focus next 4 years.

Ofcourse with Pakistan it does seem like we don’t know what part of land they are offering, but it’s back to before 2010 mode for India on precaution.

Luckily very different situation due to tech and etc.
 
Unless Canada pulls something out of the bag, they will end up in a similar boat as India with Trump and it would hit them hard too due to most exports coming to States.

Americans in general have turned anti-India. They provide cheap labour, in an era where Americans are increasingly losing jobs and industry to the third world, why would they decide Indians come up smelling of roses?

All the sycophancy will count for nothing when push comes to shove. Americans aren't impressed by kissing up, especially if they feel it is not genuine. They chased similar looking people off the land and rounded them up into reservations in their proud history, it wouldn't take that much for sentiment to turn against the new version.
 
Indian state refiners pause Russian oil purchases, sources say

Indian state refiners have stopped buying Russian oil in the past week as discounts narrowed this month and U.S. President Donald Trump warned against purchasing oil from Moscow, industry sources said.

India, the world's third-largest oil importer, is the biggest buyer of seaborne Russian crude.

The country's state refiners - Indian Oil Corp (IOC.NS), opens new tab, Hindustan Petroleum Corp (HPCL.NS), opens new tab, Bharat Petroleum Corp (BPCL.NS), opens new tab and Mangalore Refinery Petrochemical Ltd (MRPL.NS), opens new tab - have not sought Russian crude in the past week or so, four sources familiar with the refiners' purchase plans told Reuters.

IOC, BPCL, HPCL, MRPL and the federal oil ministry did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment.

The four refiners regularly buy Russian oil on a delivered basis and have turned to spot markets for replacement supply - mostly Middle Eastern grades such as Abu Dhabi's Murban crude and West African oil, sources said.

Private refiners Reliance Industries (RELI.NS), opens new tab and Nayara Energy are the biggest Russian oil buyers in India, but state refiners control over 60% of India's overall 5.2 million barrels per day refining capacity.

On July 14, Trump threatened 100% tariffs on countries that buy Russian oil unless Moscow reaches a major peace deal with Ukraine.


 
Both Trump and India are right in their own ways.

India has the right to buy cheap oil from Russia as per their needs. Trump does not want Russia to be funded indirectly by purchasing their oil. He wants the Ukr-Rus war end ASAP.

I never said India was competing with China. 😁

It is impossible for India to get to where China is because India is a very complex society with 14 or 15 different languages, 1000 different belief systems, zero ability to control the population numbers and to top it all off: the magnificent bureaucracy ..

IMO Goal for India is not to compete with China, it is to have India's own little pie, by building thier economy, infrastructure, forex reserves, while bringing down poverty and external debts.

Indian leaders also know this what you see on TV with all the chest thumping by showing they are competing with China is just a facade for the voting public to build patriotism/nationalism or whatever you wanna call it 😇😇
 
Russia oil imports 'point of irritation' in India-US ties, says Rubio

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that Delhi's relationship with Moscow remains a "point of irritation" in India-US ties.

Rubio's statement comes a day after US President Donald Trump said he would impose 25% tariffs on Indian goods "plus an unspecified penalty", for buying Russian oil and weapons.

In an interview to Fox News Radio on Thursday, Rubio called India an "ally" and "strategic partner" but added that Delhi's purchase of Russian oil was hampering its relationship with Washington.

Russian oil made up 35% to 40% of India's oil imports in 2024 - up from 3% in 2021.

India has not officially commented on Rubio's statement.

Delhi has defended its purchases of Russian oil, arguing that as a major energy importer, it must buy the cheapest available crude to protect millions of poor Indians from rising costs.

India ramped up its purchase of cheaper Russian crude after the Ukraine war began, triggered by sanctions from the West.

Rubio acknowledged India's reasons for buying Russian oil, noting that the country had huge energy needs and that it was buying from Moscow because of its discounted prices. But he added that this was fuelling the Russian war effort in Ukraine.

"I think what you're seeing the President express is the very clear frustration that with so many other oil vendors available, India continues to buy so much from Russia," he added, alluding to Trump's threat of imposing penalties on Indian companies buying Russian oil and weapons.

Reuters news agency reported that India's state-owned refineries like Hindustan Petroleum Corp (HPCL), Bharat Petroleum Corp (BPCL), Mangalore Refinery Petrochemical Ltd (MRPL) and Indian Oil Corp (IOCL) had stopped importing Russian crude since the past week due to lowered discounts.

The BBC has reached out to the companies for comment.

HSBC Global Investment Research also said there was a "significant decline" already in India's oil purchases from Russia in July.

Last month, India's Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri had said that the country would be able to meet its oil needs from alternative sources if Russian supplies were hit by US sanctions.

He said India had widened its pool of oil suppliers from 27 to about 40 countries.

Any diversification in India's oil imports away from Russia is expected to have a minimal impact on India's current account deficit - the gap between the value of a country's exports and imports and international transfers of capital - according to CareEdge, a ratings agency.

"The price differential between Russian Ural and Brent Crude has significantly narrowed to around $3 per barrel from an average of $20 per barrel in 2023," CareEdge said in a note.

The US has set lower tariffs on several competitors in the American market, which could hurt Indian exports, especially in the labour-intensive and high-value electronics sectors. Even without a trade deal, the US has announced 20 per cent tariffs on Bangladesh — a key competitor in the readymade garments (RMG) category not just in the US but also in several Western markets.

The new tariffs are set to come into effect on August 7.

Even Pakistan, with whom the US has announced a trade deal, will have lower tariffs set at 19 per cent. Trump had said that Pakistan and the US would work together on developing large Pakistani oil reserves. However, Pakistan has seen a number of unsuccessful oil exploration attempts.

Absolutely. India seems more comfortable competing with smaller countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh they’re simply not built to handle competition with nations their own size. At least against Pakistan and Bangladesh, they can come out on top and feed their inflated sense of pride

I agree with that, but I highly doubt Indian leaders understand that without regional stability, especially between India, Pakistan, and neighboring smaller nations, India will never reach where it aspires to be. Stability isn’t optional, it’s foundational. And if India’s standing with major powers still rises and falls with whoever occupies the White House, it’s not yet where it needs to be and the current leadership is to blame for that.

Canadian one is on items that are not part of already TN agreement, yes it affects Canada still but they can manage it for next 4 years.

Brazil and India will have to deal, Switzerland was surprising didn’t know what happened there.

My thoughts on this:

Region stability is impossible between India and Pakistan because the stake holders are not just India and Pakistan, Americans and Chinese are involved also.

Even if India and Pakistan decides to call it quits and shake hands 🤝 the other 2 mentioned countries will not allow it ✊️.

Americans need India and Pakistan to counter balance the Chinese.

Americans have deep ties within the ISI, they will use the ISI to spy on Chinese and disrupt supply chains especially via Gwadhar. Americans want the supply chain choke points to always be present against the Chinese be it via Gwadhar or Malaka Straits.

Americans will use the Indians to counter balance the Chinese via economy, also Malaka Strait choke points building paranoia in the Indian camp with a Chinese military threat etc.

Chinese will use Pakistan to be a issue for India always to slow India's progress and also gather Intel on the Americans.

There will never be peace in the region it is time we all accept it and move on.

How would you solve this ridde ?
 
I feel proud of this moment..as every other country capitulates...India stands strong..by its allies and on its own economic interests...tarrifs are just a sign that India is independent .doesn't have to nominate anyone for prizes because their bases got saved from Brahmos

The dynamics between US and India are fundamentally different from those between the US and Pakistan and for good reason.

Historically, the US has seen Pakistan as a more agreeable and easily manageable strategic partner in South Asia. Pakistan has often been treated as a pliable geopolitical asset one that can be leveraged and controlled. Even then, the relationship has been turbulent. Nonetheless Pakistan’s military elite and geopolitical location have made it a convenient partner for specific American interests.

In contrast, India has never fit that mould and never will hopefully. The US has occasionally attempted to draw India into a similar strategic embrace, envisioning it as a counterweight to China or as a junior partner in their Indo-Pacific strategy. But these efforts have mostly fallen short. India’s deep-rooted democratic institutions fawed as they may be are far too strong and independent to allow any government to compromise national sovereignty. In fact governments in India will fall on mere allegations of foreign appeasement. The Indian public and political system have little tolerance for the idea of becoming a vassal state. Hosting US military bases or allowing foreign control over Indian waters is simply not an option.

I have always seen some commentators from Pakistan claim their country is more “geopolitically lucrative” to the US due to its proximity to flashpoints like Iran, China, and Afghanistan. While it’s true that Pakistan sits in a volatile geography you would be naive to not acknowledge that India's geographic position is far more dominant. Just like we have a lot more oil reserves too but we have been pragmatic about the fact that they're not viable enough to start drilling.

India possesses a massive, three-sided coastline and a network of over a thousand islands that give us unrivaled reach and control across the Indian Ocean. It is the only country in the region with the capability to project power across both its land borders and maritime frontiers. The Indian Ocean is India’s sphere of influence, and any power looking to dominate the region must either court India or confront it.

India is not less valuable to the US; it is simply not for sale.

This is what truly irks American strategists. Knowing that they cannot own India. Yet they cannot afford to ignore it either. India is a gigantic market. With a population of over 1.5 billion, India is on track to become the world’s largest consumer base. This is why the US is desperate to open up Indian agriculture and dairy sectors for their exports. The real prize for them is not what India produces but what India consumes. This is where many Indians misunderstand the power dynamic. They ask: What do we have to offer the US? We don’t have rare earths like China.But the truth is that India doesn’t need to sell a damn thing to assert itself. We are becoming the world's biggest buyers and that is a far greater flex. For decades, the US itself has wielded global dominance not through what it exports, but by being the largest and most lucrative importer. Being a consumer superpower comes with immense strategic clout. It forces nations to compete for your favor.

People often assume exporters are more powerful. Sometimes, yes especially when they manipulate supply chains or control scarce resources. But those tactics rarely last. Sellers can hold the world hostage only in artificially created monopolies. The real world is dynamic. If China halts the export of rare earth metals, the rest of the world will simply diversify supply, as we've already seen with joint mining treaties forming globally in the last few years. When the West denied software to China, China built its own. Buyers, on the other hand have a sustainable form of leverage. Everyone wants access to a large, dependable, and growing market. That is why global arms manufacturers are chasing Indian contracts for jets, submarines, and missiles. That is why American dairy lobbies are practically begging for market access. This is the economic muscle of a billion-plus people and it’s only growing & India is just beginning to wield this power. And the desperation from other countries is already showing. Even superpowers cannot ignore this kind of demographic and economic gravity.

The US hasn’t been able to contain much smaller, far more isolated nations like Iran or Russia. So the idea that they can somehow tame or control a vast and democratic behemoth like India is delusional. India may not be easy to manage but it’s impossible to ignore. And that right there is our ultimate strategic advantage.
