Trump raises India tariffs to 50% over Russian oil purchases [Update@post#255]

Sounds like that Lutnick dude is really frustrated but if that's the real reason why the India-US deal didn't happen - Modi's ego, it's absurd.

The whole world is into appearing and flattering Trump. India can't afford to be behind given the number of jobs we have dependent on exports to the States.

Indian refiners avoid Russian oil in push for US trade deal

Indian refiners are avoiding Russian oil purchases for delivery in April and are expected to stay away from such trades for longer, refining and trade sources said, a move that could help New Delhi seal a trade pact with Washington.

The U.S. and India moved closer to a trade pact on Friday, announcing a framework for a deal they hope to conclude by March that would lower tariffs and deepen economic cooperation.

Indian Oil (IOC.NS), opens new tab, Bharat Petroleum (BPCL.NS), opens new tab and Reliance Industries (RELI.NS), opens new tab are not accepting offers from traders for Russian oil loading in March and April, said a trader who approached the refiners.

These refiners, however, had already scheduled some deliveries of Russian oil in March, refining sources said. Most other refiners have stopped buying Russian crude.

TRUMP SAYS INDIA 'COMMITTED' TO HALTING PURCHASES

The three refiners and the oil ministry did not respond to requests for comment. The trade minister on Saturday referred questions about Russian oil to the foreign ministry.

A foreign ministry spokesperson said: "Diversifying our energy sourcing in keeping with objective market conditions and evolving international dynamics is at the core of our strategy" to ensure energy security for the world's most-populous nation.

Although a U.S.-India statement on the trade framework did not mention Russian oil, President Donald Trump rescinded his 25% tariffs on Indian goods, imposed over Russian oil purchases, because, he said, New Delhi had "committed to stop directly or indirectly" importing Russian oil.

New Delhi has not announced plans to halt Russian oil imports.

India became the top buyer of discounted Russian seaborne crude after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, spurring a backlash from Western nations that had targeted Russia's energy sector with sanctions aimed at curtailing Moscow's revenue and making it harder to fund the war.

One regular Indian buyer is Russia-backed private refiner Nayara, which relies solely on Russian oil for its 400,000-barrel-per-day refinery. Sources said Nayara may be allowed to keep buying Russian oil because other crude sellers pulled back after the European Union sanctioned the refiner in July.

Nayara also does not plan to import Russian crude in April due to a month-long refinery maintenance shutdown, a source familiar with its operations said.

Nayara did not respond to an email seeking comment.

Indian refiners may change their plan and place orders for Russian oil only if advised by the government, sources said.

Trump's order said U.S. officials would monitor and recommend reinstating the tariffs if India resumed oil procurement from Russia.

Sources said last month that India was preparing to cut Russian oil imports below 1 million bpd by March, with volumes eventually falling to 500,000–600,000 bpd, compared with an average 1.7 million bpd last year. India's Russian oil imports topped 2 million bpd in mid-2025.

The intake of Russian oil by India, the world's third-biggest oil consumer and importer, declined to its lowest level in two years in December, data from trade and industry sources show.

Indian refiners have been buying more oil from Middle Eastern, African and South American countries as they scale back Russian oil purchases.

Farmers have called for nationwide protest in India as a response to the trade deal with US.

I have seen them call it a complete surrender.

What are their issues with it?

Scott Bessent said the move aims to enable oil to keep flowing into the global market amid the war in West Asia that has disrupted oil supply

The U.S. Treasury Department is issuing a “ temporary 30-day waiver to allow Indian refiners to purchase Russian oil”, according to U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

In a statement on X on Friday (March 6, 2026), Mr. Bessent said the move aims to enable oil to keep flowing into the global market amid the war in West Asia that has disrupted oil supply.

“This deliberately short-term measure will not provide significant financial benefit to the Russian government as it only authorises transactions involving oil already stranded at sea,” said Mr. Bessent.

“This stop-gap measure will alleviate pressure caused by Iran’s attempt to take global energy hostage.”

He went on to say that the U.S. expects India to ramp up purchases of U.S. oil as India is an “essential partner”.

India never stopped purchasing Russian oil, though they made reduced the purchase to honor Trump's decision of reducing tarrifs on India to 18%

Also global trades are bilateral and never unilateral

At this point it’s Bakhsheesh. Master slave relationship. Only do things which US/Israel permits. What a shame for a country of 1.5 billion.
So you want India to fight and show who the real man is?

India is in no position to dictate world economics. They are a medium fish in global economics. The big fish will always rule and everyone has to obey.

exactly, but i wouldnt say even medium fish, more like a swap fish = as when trump told you to buy venezualan oil = you didnt put up any fight

They are definitely bigger than minnows, but medium is exaggerated to boost ego, nothing else. Entire SA is still a dependent economy - meaning, as in a prisoner cell, your existence depends on external factors - unable to survive on its own if left alone for a short while and in complete chaos.

India's crude oil imports from Russia are on track to climb to a six-month high in December as the world's third-biggest buyer defies U.S. sanctions on Moscow's oil producers.

Crude arrivals from Russia are expected to rise to 1.85 million barrels per day (bpd) in December, from 1.83 million bpd in November, according to data compiled by commodity analysts Kpler.

India's December imports from Russia are likely to have risen for a third consecutive month and are the highest since June's 2.10 million bpd.

Russian crude has not been diminished by the U.S. sanctions against top Russian producers Lukoil and Rosneft, what has changed is the mix of buyers.

The largest chunk of Russian oil being imported by India in December is being offloaded at Vadinar port, with Kpler estimating arrivals of about 658,000 bpd, up from 561,000 bpd in November and above the average for 2025 of 431,000 bpd.

It would seem that the new U.S. sanctions, announced in October, have failed to cut India's imports from Russia, with India likely making the calculation that the discounts on offer are enough to outweigh any political fallout.

We must see a lot of posts today on "US giving permission to India" trying to use it to mock India by some small-minded Indians who can't accept India winning in every crisis for some reason.

But let's be clear: India didn't care about this US permission for Russian oil ever.

Russian oil flowed into India even under US sanctions and objections for 3 years since Russia-Ukraine war started. In fact, it increased substantially even as US and EU were crying about India buying Russian oil and threatening India.

So let's appreciate India for such strong decisions in national interest previously that kept oil manageable in spite of big world wide conflicts and threats by world powers. India has worked in its overall strategic interests clearly.

This statement by the US is for their own domestic audience because news reports were out in plenty that India was increasing Russian oil - which it was still buying even in February.

Wow Indians are good actors! What a statement from the US government.

When Trump administration speaks Modi says "yess sarr, no sarr three barrels full sarr"
India has never depended on permission from any country to buy Russian oil,” the government said in a statement. “India is still importing Russian oil even in February 2026, and Russia is still India’s largest crude oil supplier.”
