[PICTURE] So a 'damp patch' leads to a World Cup match being abandoned

I would blame it on incompetence instead of some conspiracy more than anything.

What would they even be conspiring against? People keep saying that this a conspiracy by the ICC? But who are they actually conspiring against and what would they gain from this?

Yes its a conspiracy as Pakistan is best team in the world and Sarfraz is best captain.

International Cricket Council acting under influence of BCCI deliberately called off the match early so it would be easier to oust Pakistan from World Cup.

Moreover, 3 years ago, they decided to schedule this match in Bristol, so that if it rained, Sri Lanka would be saved from a certain defeat against Pakistan by poor drainage system of the ground.

The whole world conspires against the Pakistan cricket team otherwise they would win everything.

In 2017 CT when no one conspired, Pakistan was unstoppable.

Please do not conspire against Pakistan.

Thanks.

You failed to grasp the point.

I get that ok, but the thing irk me was your example. Is it fine to put a political example in sports debate?

I know this is what you peoples have been taught since 70 years but to participate in healthy debate you have to look outside of that fallacious well.

This match was never going to be played because Bristol doesn’t have start of the art drainage system or super soakers like Lords or the Oval.

Which then begs the question why was this ground awarded worked cup matches ? Well only the ECB knows the answer.

But let’s be honest it would have been a 20/20 at most and so would have given Sri Lanka more of a chance to win especially if they won the toss and bowled first with favourable conditions.

Let’s just move on and hope the weather doesn’t play spoil sport for the rest of the tournament.

Its incompetence at its best , you are hosting world cup matches in england and you do not have proper drainage facility. How did this venue even pass?

I don't think there was any conspiracy, just overall incompetence and poorly developed protocols.

Stop being crybabies. Australia had two games abandoned in the Champions Trophy, yet they did not cry about it.

If the match against India or Australia was washed out, none would have complained. Most would have been content with gaining one point.

Australia got knocked out of the Champions Trophy due to those two abandoned games. All hell will break loose if that happens to Pakistan :))

It is easy to blame ICC for everything, but they are not responsible for the incompetence of the Bristol staff. They gave ECB the hosting rights, and it was ECB’s job to make the necessary preparations.

So in your opinion ICC is faultless?

Based on your response above, it is probably better to do away with ICC who (in your view) have no accountability in this fiasco.

The ICC match referee and officials made the call to abandon the match when weather improved.. Assume you also dont blame ICC for that?

Ignorance is indeed bliss :) continue

If this was a india England game they would have booked a helicopter to dry the ground goddammit

It reminds me of a funny story in 1996 WC or some tournament around that time. Bihar was hosting a match and they had kept a helicopter on standby to ensure the ground dries up fast in case of rain. The Bihar government in eagerness to use that didn't even wait for groundsmen to remove water from the pitch cover traditionally and deployed the helicopter while the pitch cover was still on and the water from the pitch covers spread to the inner circle which couldn't be dried in time and match was called of. Just a funny story, as my contribution, amidst the conspiracy theories thread.

They did actually “cry” about it.

=====

Australia captain Steve Smith directed his frustration at the Oval’s groundsmen after rain denied his side a much-needed Champions Trophy win over Bangladesh.

The abandonment was particularly galling as Australia appeared so close to victory, having already seen their opening game against New Zealand washed out on Friday.

Bangladesh were bowled out for a lowly 182 and Smith’s side were looking comfortable at 83 for one when rain stopped play just before 6.45pm.

They were also just four overs short of the 20 needed for the Duckworth-Lewis method to be activated, which almost certainly would have ruled in Australia’s favour.

The weather did ease at around 8pm and an announcement was made that the game would restart at 8.30pm once the groundsmen had removed the covers from the pitch.

The rain, however, returned before the field was ready and the match was finally called off around an hour later.

“It’s a little bit frustrating not to get a result in,” Smith said.

“The groundsmen perhaps could have shown a bit more urgency with it being a big tournament, but I think they did the best job they could.

“The umpires said it was an 8.30pm start so you have to do what they say.”

Both teams seemed acutely aware of the 20-over mark approaching, as Bangladesh appeared keen to slow the game down while Smith and David Warner, both at the crease, adopted defensive shots perhaps to speed it up.

At the end of the 16th over, however, a drinks break coincided with the umpires finally deciding to send the players off.

“Of course I didn’t want to go off,” Smith said.

“I was happy to keep playing through the rain. But the umpires are there to make a decision.

“There was a drinks break at the end of that over which probably didn’t help. If the game had carried on perhaps they would have had a different opinion. But to be fair it was raining quite heavily.”

The result leaves Australia with two points after two games played in Group A and almost certainly needing to beat England in their final game to reach the semi-finals.

Bangladesh, meanwhile, would have been eliminated if they had been beaten here, but the abandonment keeps their faint hopes of progress alive.

Their captain Mashrafe Mortaza was unapologetic for his side’s lucky escape, pointing to Australia avoiding defeat in similar circumstances against New Zealand.

“In today’s match Australia was far ahead of us, but in the last match against New Zealand, Australia were in the same position [as us] so you can’t do anything with the weather,” Mortaza said.

“Both teams are now in the situation that Australia has to win against England and we have a great chance against New Zealand to go through so let’s see what happens.”

Bangladesh had Tamim Iqbal to thank after he followed up his 128 against England last week by scoring 95, before eventually falling to Mitchell Starc.

Starc was the pick of the Australian attack after taking four for 29 before Warner passed 4,000 one-day international runs in his 93rd innings, the fastest Australian to do so.

ICC has no accountability in this fiasco because it is not their job to ensure that grounds have proper drainage facilities. It is the job of the ECB to take care of these things.

The ICC match referee and umpires made the call to abandon the game because the Bristol staff didn’t have the means to deal with the wet outfield/damp patch before the cut-off time.

It doesn’t matter if the weather improved or not as long as the outfield was not in playing condition, and they waited for a long time and made multiple inspections before they came to the conclusion that the ground staff was not able to make the outfield ready for cricket.

Yes ignorance is indeed bliss. Your posts in this thread have done a good job nightlong that.
