Mohammad Rizwan "The criticism seems to be dying down a bit, so I must be doing something right"

No it did not and that's what I am trying to explain the posters here in this and other threads. We did not lose the game because of Rizwan. We had a competitive total only because Rizwan batted beautifully. We lost the game because our bowlers completely forgot how to ball after first 4 overs. Our team also failed to notice that this NZ team was getting better with every game, yet we took them lightly, a mistake you never make against weaker teams. Btw Rizwan also saved 4 boundaries with his great keeping. As for his batting in death overs, yes he was selfish and we cricketers always believe that the game of cricket will always teach you a lesson if you are going for personal milestones etc etc.

All Rizwan had to do was get out or look to maximise every ball from the 16th over, and no blame would be on him. Did he try that? Had he done so, we either fell short to 180 odd or got to 210+ had it come off. Had he tried and failed…no blame on him at least

But he didn’t, and at the end of the day there will always be questions as to how many short where Pakistan on this road. Latham and Mitchell didn’t get going in this innings, they are capable of hurting Pakistan, yet NZ cruises to 194 so easily still.

You probably didn’t read what I wrote in the match thread but I clearly wrote “180 will not be enough considering the form Chapman is in”.

I know this game, I read this game like an Eagle. And it’s my Eagle lens that is telling you that Rizwan’s stupidity in the last 4 overs is the reason why Pakistan didn’t cross 200 at least

You have a fair point. I didn't like that he didn't have that desperation in him to maximise the total. It was more like I've done my job let me try and cash in on my 100. Also hated the way Babar and co were sitting waiting for his 100 like children. Didn't like what I saw there

Lost us the game. I have no problem with the majority of his innings we lost early and consistent wickets. But in the last few overs no excuse, we had wickets in hand, you’ve got to go for it, he played so slowly. Probably underestimated NZ sadly, thinking of the 100.

You guys don't understand this game and have no idea how to discuss cricket. After getting 3 wickets in just 4 overs where the score was still below 25 runs, It was surely our bowling that lost us the game. Most of the posters here only think about batting as if bowling is not part of the game.

I agree that it was bowling which lost the game but another fact is Pakistan failed to achieve winnable score because of Babar's 19 of 18 balls in power play & in the end Rizwan's 17 of 13 balls. If you add these two failures Babar-Rizwan scored 36 runs of 31 balls. In total Rizwan & Babar played 80 deliveries out of total 120. If Rizwan might have gotten out little earlier instead of being selfish, I am sure Imad, Shadab, Shaheen or Faheem would have set target of 210-220

No you don't. You are so fixated on what Rizwan did at the back end of innings that you completely forgot what happened in the second innings of this game. It is useless but still let me try and refresh your memory.

End of over 4 - NZ:26/3 RR 6.50 RRR 10.50

End of over 6 - NZ:33/3 RR 5.50 RRR 11.50

That 7th over from our vc was just garbage and completely unacceptable. Shadab never showed up and was terrible throughout this series. Only picked up 3 wickets and his economy rate was 9.60. bowling average 48. Seriously it is time to drop him for good.

Still Imad the bowler of this series picked up another wicket in the 10th over and further reduced their chances of winning the game.

End of over 10 - NZ: 73/4 RR 7.30 RRR 12.10 121 runs from 60 balls. Now at this point it does not matter what Pakistan scored in the first innings as NZ required 121 runs from the last 10 overs and they were already 4 down.
Haris Rauf who was a leading wicket taker of this series decided to take a day off and did not look interested at all. Faheem, Shadab, and even Shaheen were just horrible and bowled garbage, but somehow it was all Rizwan's fault. Only 3 guys showed up to play this game Rizwan, Imad and Iftikhar.

192 is not defendable on Pindi pitch, irrespective of bowling unit. Rizwan's 17 of last 13 balls with just 1 boundary is not justifiable at all.

Shaheen, Shadab and Faheem are bowlers who can bat a little, so can't put much faith in them, but I agree that 204 or 206 was possible if Rizwan was not thinking about his century.

last 4 overs 11 balls 14 runs. Score at least 30 if you are this well set.

sorry for me you need to sit out for 5 matches after this.Doesnt matter if you win or lose.

Pak scored 50 runs in that span of play, wasn't slow at all. At one point 193 wasn't looking possible.

Btw bowlers are also required to bowl in pairs too just like batting and they can be selfish too, but we hardly call anyone selfish here because that part of the game goes over everyone's head. Shaheen is not a good death bowler, but he could have bowled better today if he was not trying to hit the stumps again and again.

The mentality and mindset needs to change. However, if the leadership group like Riz and Babar are putting their own personal milestones before the rest of the team, then its going to filter down to the rest of the group and nothing is going to change.

But its got so bad now, even die hard Rizbab fans are starting to call them out.

Also hated the way Babar and co were sitting waiting for his 100 like children. Didn't like what I saw there

Haha, good comments.

Very disappointed in Rizwan. Didn't like the way the last four overs rolled out yesterday, and especially that Imad episode at the end.

Cost Pakistan the match, and the whole fiasco around the century was exposed. That wasn't good at all to see.

I think Rizwan is a valuable cricketer for Pakistan considering our resources, but this softness of personal milestones needs to stop asap. And yesterday's episode should be a kick in the backside for everyone in the squad.

Trying to manufacture a hundred at the cost of some valuable runs for the team shows the mentality of Rizwan as a batter. Imad who was 31 of 13 was trying to nudge the ball instead of going for big shots to get Rizwan on strike. Absolutely poor. What's the point of scoring 98*? A batter who opens the batting should reach a 100 in T20 if they have managed to stay till the end. Playing 61 balls and still not reaching 3 figure mark and then slowing down to get to a hundred was really poor cricket from Pakistan.

Chapman got to his hundred in 54 balls.

True. This is a very bad habit and not good for the team culture. Personal runs should not matter. Just look at teams like Aus and Eng they dont care at all about 100s even in big test matches. Our lot gets all excited when they reach a 50 during a meaningless T20 game.

I wrote in the match thread

On this deck, Jason Roy would have scored a century in 40-45 balls

Rizwan or Babar are not on the level of proper world class T20 openers

He is not. He is a chocker and always acting. Plus he cares so much about individual scores.

Failed in almost every crucial T20 game last 2 years.

Credit to you for calling a spade a spade. The avg 1st inns score at Pindi in PSL was 209 so we were below par and not for the first time.

While Rizwan's slowing down near his century is being rightly criticised - let's not forget Babar batting at run a ball in the PP again, and saying in the presser he initially wanted 180-190 as if he never saw a single PSL game at Pindi.

An anomaly is forgiveable, a pattern is not.

He batted very well for the majority of the match. We would have scored far less than 190 without him.

But he’s still most at fault for the lost due to the final overs. More so the fact that it was a conscious decision not to hit out properly. He didn’t go for it. The other batsmen and the bowlers were bad, but they can’t help it, tried their best. Even if our bowlers should have easily defended this sort of score.

Great innings and I know he was approaching a century - but 17 off his last 13 balls wasn't great was it.

He was trying to slog but it didn't come off in the last couple hours but the intent was thier.

I agree bowling cost Pakistan the game espically when we think our strength is our bowling.

The problem is the mindset. Rizwan scored 17 odd in his last 13 balls where he was closing on his hundred. Not only he himself was trying for his hundred but he also managed to get other batters involved in this by trying to get on strike for his last 2 runs. This was the time when Pakistan should have been looking for 200+ total.

It's the mindset that is runing our cricket. Losing in such a pathetic manner is disappointing. At least give your best. Not try for selfish milestones.

He showed intent but unfortunately it was going straight to the fielder.

As Mark Chapman showed today, if you're gonna be scoring 80+ runs in a T20, your strike rate better be well above 180 at the minimum, anything less than that and you're wasting your time as a set batsman

Chapman was batting second he knew what the required run was.Rizwan was setting a target.

He was trying to slog but it didn't come off in the last couple hours but the intent was thier.

The intent was hardly there.

There is no excuse for 17 off 13 balls when you have been batting throughout the innings.

Chapman was batting second he knew what the required run was.Rizwan was setting a target.

Doesn't excuse Rizwan slowing down near the end of his innings. If you're setting a target does that mean you get to stop attacking and play for your hundred?

He showed intent but unfortunately it was going straight to the fielder.

Should have went airborne so at least the fielder could catch it and then allow someone else more suited to the task to have a go.

The intent was there, now he couldn't get shots, not his fault.

The intent was hardly there.

There is no excuse for 17 off 13 balls when you have been batting throughout the innings.

As Mohammad Wasim pointed out, most Pakistan players are guilty of slowing down near milestones.

This seems to be a huge issue. But isn't it human nature?

The only intent I saw from Rizwan was the intent to be not out.

Poor approach.

Saj have u ever had a conversation with Mickey about this obsession in our team culture with personal milestones

Rizwan has his limitations and everyone is aware of these. But the TM and the discerning fan know that Rizwan has been the 2nd best batter in the PSL and even in this series, only Chapman and Iftikhar have done better. For a wk/bat, that's good enough and there is nobody else in all of Pakistan who can pull off what he does. The flak that he gets is, frankly, shocking.

The bigger questions to be asked are : -

Why is Saim Ayub being played in the middle order when he plays in top order for PSL? To protect Bobby?

Why did Mohammad Haris not get an extended run despite being THE outstanding PSL batter?

Similarly, why was Ihsanullah not played until the last game despite being THE outstanding PSL quick?

Why no criticism for Fakhar when he was comfortably the worst PAK batter in the series?

What are Shadab and Faheem doing there? Faheem was below average and Shadab was the biggest match loser of all? Why did Usama Mir - the best spinner in PSL and Pakistan Cup - lose out to Shadab ?

These are bigger issues in your T20 cricket than Rizwan's supposed lack of intent

Good posts. Sometimes we, including myself, lose sight of other glaring issues when criticizing Rizwan.

The selection of late has been horrible. Blame squarely should be placed on Babar.

I suggest you watch Eng and Aus players, they dont care one bit about personal milestones.

I do watch England and Australia but fact is no other teams depend on one or 2 player than us.

Every one of these are valid points.

I don't know how the 'think tank' will justify any of these.

Pakistan needs a shake up and sometimes humiliations like these are positives as they highlight the flaws in the approach.

Rizwan is the greatest t20 opener in the history of Pakistan. But missing out on his century has fortunately highlighted a number of issues which are going unaddressed.

Rizwan hits back whenever they come after him! Brilliant batting today.

Lovely innings from Rizwan today.

Showed urgency right from the start of his innings.

Kept the momentum going and saw the team home.

Excellent batting.

Even if that’s true (and that is still an if because the others haven’t exactly been given extended chances to reach big scores). That is not valid reasoning to slow down when reaching milestones.

You can even argue slowness up front for the reasons you’ve given but not at the back end of the innings when you have sufficient wickets in hand.

His List A average is currently 47.32, but he hasn't been great so far in ODIs where he averages 33.92.

However today's innings was full of confidence and he looked like a batter who wanted to finish the job.

Every chance that his ODI record can improve in future.

Solid innings. Good shots down the ground and through off as well. Always believed he’d do far better in the middle order at #5 or 4 at most in LOIs. Still do.

Imam
Fakhar
Babar
Haris Sohail
Rizwan

Good top 5

Although he did well at his position today, he needs to bat at the regular keeping slot of 7. His batting is useful when it’s a backup, not the main show.

Wether people like it or not we are highly dependent on Rizzy and Babar. When one of these scores we usually end up scoring decent runs.

People who do not appreciate the era of Babar, Rizzy have forgotten the terrible days before 2016.

This is how the champion needs to play

Dont worry about milestones champion.

He knows very well deep in his heart he was wrong in slowing down as he was nearing his hundred. Its ok, we all make mistakes.

Thought it was a little risky what he was doing, especially no one after him but guess it paid off.

Thought it was a little risky what he was doing, especially no one after him but guess it paid off.

Not risky as much as calculated. He is a smart guy. Rachin is the weakest link he had 3 overs left and Rizwan is a gun player of left arm spin. Might as well take a calculated punt and end the game.

Two excellent fast-paced innings by Riz in the 2 ODIs, albeit against a week bowling line-up but shows why we need him at that position.

Two fantastic knocks by the champion and this thread is so quite lol.

That slow down for the hundred was rightly criticised and should serve as a lesson for the rest of his career.

Rizwan is an integral part of the XI and needs to play according to the team first.

Looked fluent and in control in both ODI innings in the series against New Zealand.

Most importantly he made sure he was there to the end of the match.

Lovely batting.

I wonder if we should move him to number 4 and put Iftikhar at 5. There's still time left to make some changes and get the combination right.

I would keep him at number 5, never seen him bat that good in ODI's. Seems a bit of a finisher too but early days for that.

Yeah, I like his work rate at 5. He might slow down if we move him to a higher position.

I would actually keep Rizwan at No.5. He looks a lot more unhinged or unchained batting at No.5.

I understand the issues with Rizwan in t20s, including the tactical limitations Pakistan have by continuing to open with him. However, unless his form falls off of a cliff, there should never be any doubts about Rizwan in either ODIs or tests. Sarfi earned his place back in tests based on his batting, however Rizwan is still the much much better keeper.

I’d still move him up to 4. I think he has better potential for big scores.

Agha at 5, Iftikhar at 6.

Getting hyped over standard performances on a Pindi road against a b string attack

Reality will hit hard soon.

True, needs to do it in an ODI WC game against India, then we can all do bhangra.

Let them all play the next 2 world cups in ODIs and T20 Rizwan Iftikhar Imam in ODIs and others after the typical struggle and failure in big matches we can be done with them for good and move on to the next generation of players.

:moyo

And if he had not done that, what would you have said?

As per some people, Rizwan got soft runs.

It seems like Fakhar was playing against NZ A and Rizwan was playing against NZ B.

Fakhar piles the runs at the top so he should be appreciated and he's the second coming of Anwar. Babar piles the runs and he's a stat padder.

Very easy to see through that sort of criticism.

Who’s jumping up and down like it’s their Mamu’s Shadi for Fakhar’s runs though?

He breeeezed past this NZ attack two matches in a row for his 300 runs in 2 games. Didn’t break a sweat

And Fakhar has proven that he is a Big daddy hundred player against the best attacks with his 193 v SA and the 140 odd he scored against England in 2017 before the World Cup

Fakhar is legit.

That’s right folks, when Rizwan scores it is vs a B team, when Fakhar scores against the same team it is legit.

Just need Azam Khan and Shan Masood to score, and they’d be worthy of top rank.

It’s a genuine point I’ve made

Fakhar has a CT final hundred
-193 v South Africa’s first team attack
-140 against England’s World Cup winning attack
-100 against New Zealand’s attack that won the ODI series in Pakistan

Fakhar is certified. He can score 180+ against NZ’s main attack too

Rizwan has been more consistent in T20s than Fakhar’s hit and miss performances in T20s and ODIs.

As for CT17, your were talking about dropped catches in the last ODI match, and we all know how Fakhar was reprieved in the CT17 and his last ODI.

At least be consistent in your hate towards Rizwan.

My hate towards Rizwan is consistent so what more do you want me to do?

How was Fakhar reprieved? Who dropped his catch in the CT? He was out on a no ball, that’s not really a batsmen error so what exactly are you talking about?

Maybe you don't understand what reprieved means.

The fact you undermine Rizwan's performance in the last ODI by claiming it was against a B-team, but anoint Fakhar for sainthood for scoring against the same team, same match, proves that you are not consistent in your hate.

Rizwan is here to stay, amd never in a month of Sundays will your choice Azam Khan replace him.
