Pakistan name ICC Champions Trophy 2025 squad

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced a 15-player squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, scheduled to take place in Pakistan from 19 February to 9 March. The PCB has until 11 February to make any changes to the squad; thereafter, replacements will only be permitted on medical grounds, subject to approval by the ICC Event Technical Committee.

The same squad will also feature in the tri-nation ODI series, featuring New Zealand and South Africa in Lahore and Karachi, in the lead up to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

There are four changes in the 15-player squad that last played an ODI series in South Africa late last year. Abdullah Shafique, Muhammad Irfan Khan, Saim Ayub and Sufyan Moqim have been replaced by Faheem Ashraf, Fakhar Zaman, Khushdil Shah and Saud Shakeel.

The squad, to be captained by Mohammad Rizwan with Salman Ali Agha as vice-captain, includes three members from the 2017 title-winning side - Babar Azam, Faheem Ashraf and Fakhar Zaman. Babar and Fakhar, along with Haris Rauf, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Saud Shakeel had also featured in the last 50-over ICC event - the ICC Men’s 50-over Cricket World Cup 2023.

Following the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, Pakistan has played three ODI series, defeating 50-over world champions Australia 2-1, Zimbabwe 2-1 and South Africa 3-0.

Pakistan’s 15-player squad:

Batters: Babar Azam, Fakhar Zaman, Kamran Ghulam, Saud Shakeel, Tayyab Tahir

All-rounders: Faheem Ashraf, Khushdil Shah, Salman Ali Agha (vice-captain)

Wicketkeeper-batters: Mohammad Rizwan (captain), Usman Khan

Spinner: Abrar Ahmed

Fast bowlers: Haris Rauf, Mohammad Hasnain, Naseem Shah, Shaheen Shah Afridi

Opener Fakhar Zaman, who scored a century in the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 final against India, makes a comeback after overcoming injury and illness that had sidelined him from international cricket since June 2024. Fakhar demonstrated his return to complete fitness and form during the Champions T20 Cup 2024 in December, where he was the third-highest run-scorer with 303 runs at an impressive strike-rate of over 132. In 82 ODIs, Fakhar has scored 3,492 runs with 11 centuries and 16 half-centuries at an average of 46.5 and strike-rate of 93.4.

Pakistan Test vice-captain Saud Shakeel has been rewarded for his consistent and strong performances in home Tests by earning a place in the side. The left-hander played his 15th and last ODI against England in Kolkata in the ICC Men’s 50-over World Cup 2023 but has scored 577 runs in 13 Test innings at home this season with two centuries and two half-centuries against Bangladesh, England and the West Indies

All-rounders Faheem Ashraf and Khushdil Shah return to the 50-over squad, adding versatility and providing captain Mohammad Rizwan with additional options. Faheem’s 34th and last ODI was in September 2023 and since then he has been one of the most consistent domestic performers across all formats, while Khushdil last represented Pakistan in ODIs in August 2022 and has earned the selectors nod after scoring 176 runs in the Champions One-Day Cup as well as scoring 132 runs and taking nine wickets in the Champions T20 Cup.

Asad Shafiq, member, National Selection Committee:

“The selectors have continued to adopt a horses for courses approach in assembling this squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Our focus has been on selecting players who have consistently excelled in domestic competitions under similar conditions, demonstrating their readiness to perform in a global event.

“One of the standout qualities of this side is its flexibility - an essential trait in today’s modern-day cricket. We are confident that this squad strikes the right balance between youth and experience, and has all bases covered. Each player has been chosen with a clear role in mind, ensuring the captain has versatile options at his disposal.

“The inclusion of emerging players like mystery spinner Abrar Ahmed and middle-order batters Kamran Ghulam and Tayyab Tahir reflects our confidence in their ability to translate domestic success into international impact. These players have shown the temperament and skill to thrive in challenging environments and have a deep understanding of home conditions.

“Abrar Ahmed will lead the spin attack, supported by Khushdil Shah and Salman Ali Agha, who offer reliable slow-bowling options, while Faheem Ashraf’s experience and presence gives us a fast-bowling all-rounder’s option.

“Fakhar Zaman’s return is a significant boost for our top-order. His aggressive approach and match-winning capabilities are vital to our plans.

“Likewise, Saud Shakeel has been drafted to further bolster the batting and capitalise on his rich vein of form in Test cricket, particularly in home conditions. Moreover, he is an experienced, intelligent and calculated batter who constructs his innings thoughtfully and excels at building partnerships.

“Fakhar’s opening partner could be either Babar Azam or Saud Shakeel, depending on various factors such as conditions, opposition and match strategy. Both players are highly capable at the top of the order, with Babar being particularly seasoned in the role, regularly opening in T20Is and also excelling in the Cape Town Test by scoring two half-centuries in Saim Ayub’s absence.

“Saim Ayub has not been included in the squad due to an ankle injury, but we remain optimistic about his recovery. We understand how much he was looking forward to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and recognise how devastating it must be for him to miss a global event, especially when he is in such exceptional batting form. However, as a valuable asset to our team, we are committed to prioritising his long-term health over making any rushed decisions.

“The tri-nation ODI series against New Zealand and South Africa in the lead up to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will not only serve as preparation but also as a platform to refine our strategies under competitive conditions. It’s an excellent opportunity to give the players final touch-ups before defending the Champions Trophy at home.”

The Pakistan ODI squad will assemble in Lahore on Monday, 3 February.

Player support personnel for tri-nation ODI series and ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Naveed Akram Cheema (team manager), Hina Munawar (team operations manager), Aqib Javed (interim head coach), Azhar Mahmood (assistant coach), Shahid Aslam (batting coach), Mohammad Masroor (fielding coach), Abdul Rehman (spin bowling coach), Cliffe Deacon (physiotherapist), Drikus Saiman (strength and conditioning coach), Talha Butt (analyst), Irtiza Komail (security manager), Dr Wajid Ali Rafai (team doctor), Sergio Basil Mullins (Masseur) and Syed Naeem Ahmad (media and digital manager).

Upcoming ODIs:

8 Feb – vs New Zealand, Lahore (tri-nation ODI series)
12 Feb – vs South Africa, Karachi (tri-nation ODI series)
19 Feb – vs New Zealand, Karachi (ICC Champions Trophy 2025)
23 Feb – vs India, Dubai (ICC Champions Trophy 2025)
27 Feb – vs Bangladesh, Rawalpindi (ICC Champions Trophy 2025)

Im now certain that Faheem Ashraf has links with Pmln govt.

There was no way he could had been selected.

Faheem ashraf and usman khan are terrible selections. Sufiyan muqeem should had been added.

I would had taken mohammad harris any day over usman khan. Even though he is not consisstant but is better than usman

Faheem ashraf selection makes no sense. I get that mianwali allrounder is also garbage but faheem was not the answe

Only one spinner?? I am disappointed with the selection of Usman Khan and Mohammad Hasnain.

Khushdil is in good form and is handy with the ball atleast.

It’s known to everyone ..

To have shezad say usman khan, and shadab say abrar, epic trolling by pcb..

Faheem ashraf should had said rana faheem.

Selecting one spinner is definitely a bold decision. Remains to be seen if it will come back to bite them in the rear.

Not sure what Irfan Khan did to be dropped over Usman Khan.

Faheem Ashraf being selected over Aamir Jamal is also a highly questionable decision.

Rizwan bottled the selection here, alot of these guys are just players that rizwan is comfortable with. Surprise he didnt go for Ifti.

Usman khan and Faheems selection needs to be explained.

I feel bad for Sufiyan aswell

On the other hand, very glad to see Saud Shakeel in the squad.

Still haven't gotten over the sadness of Saim missing out.

Rizwan? Aqib Javed and his section committee probably had a bigger hand in this

Aamir Jamal is garbage. But Faheem was not the answer.

They should had gone for Jahandad Khan here if they wanted a pace allroudner.

na, the captain is responsible at the end of the day, especially for ICC tournamnets. I have maintained this whether Misbah, Babar, Afridi, Sarfraz or RIzwan is the captain.

Him being buddies with Usman Khan and Khushdil is known, while i have no issues with Khushdil being selected, but i dont hav much faith in him.

Anyways, this team's middle order and lower order is non existent.

Great squad. Both Faheem and Kushdil are in great form in BPL with both of them being top performers. Kushdil has shown great improvement in batting and bowling and with a home crowd behind him, hopes are they he can vindicate himself after the hole parchi fiasco.

Great choice by playing Babar as opener, hopefully he and Fakhar can dictate the game at the top and give Kamran the opportunity to play in his spot.

As rated by all domestic Pak players, Tayyib Tahir, the best player of spin in Pakistan is needed this CT, with ICC preparing the pitched, likelihood of slow turners is very high.

Aamir Jamal is not garbage. He has more potential than any seam bowling all-rounder that Pakistan has produced since Razzaq.

You mean the poster boy for starvation and malnutrition Jahandad Khan?

If I were him I would start living in the gym until I add some semblance of muscle mass.

I fear for him. If the wind blows too fast he might just fly away

Middle order is okay if you keep Usman out. Unfortunately it feels like Faheem will be batting at 7, despite having tailenderesque batting numbers.

I would even take Khushdil in the playing XI over fake all-rounder Faheem.

WHERE DID FAHEEM ASHRAF COME FROM? WHO IS DOING THE SELECTING?

WHAT THE ABSOLUTE @^@^#^#&#^@&#^#&#&@&#&@&#&@&#&@&#&×&#&@@&@&&@×&&@@&&@&@@&@&@&&@&@@**@&#@*&#&@&@&@&@&#&@&#<@&#@&@&@&@&@&@&@&@*@&@&@&@&@&&@@&&&@&@&@&@&&@&@

Highly likely that they open the batting with Fakhar and Usman, considering he has opened in PSL. That would be the death-kneel for Pakistan's batting if this hack Usman Khan manages to get into the playing XI

Here's what I like about the squad

A) Saud Shakeel being included.

B) Tayyab over Niazi

Here's what I dislike

A) Faheem

B) Only one spinner.

BPL lol. What's next? Selecting guys for their performance in club cricket?

I think Babar will open.

Why not try saud? He opened in psl as well and he's way more suited to odi? Plus he's improved his game against pace.

Faheem doesn’t make sense to me . Usman is okay as back up WK batter . Dropping Irfan Khan is a mistake he was shaping up well . Khushdil will fail as usual . Spin looks extreme weak

Saud makes more sense to me in the opening slot because he can actually keep the scoreboard ticking and is good at rotating the strike, and he has opened in the PSL. 5 and 6 should be Agha and Ghulam.

Hope this is just a rumor floated by some low-rent Pak cricket journalist and not what they are actually doing.
1) Babar
2) Fakhar
3) Kamran
4) Rizwan
5) Saud
6) Agha
7) Tayyab
8) Shaheen
9) Naseem
10) Rauf
11) Abrar

^^ 100% this will be the playing 11

Glad to see Saud Shakeel in the xi.a world class top 4.

Fakhar
Babar Azam
Saud Shakeel
Kamran Ghullam
Rizwan
Salman Agha
Khushdil
Shaheen
Naseem
Rauf
Abrar

What’s an “Un-bottled” selection by Rizwan? A squad that pays tribute to Misbah and SNGPL??

What a weird comment!
weird issue. so if someone critisizes rizwan you still have an issue

I'm willing to give Khushdil another chance. If he plays like he plays in the PSL, then he could a really good player for us.

Unlike Usman (who is simply irredeemable) he actually does possess some talent. And he is handy with the ball too.

The problem is that he has flopped at the international level in a big way. There is definitely some kind of mental block with him.

7 will be Khushdil or Faheem.

Ghulam needs to bat at 6 because he is capable of accelerating at the end.
Maybe but I'm 110% sure that this will be the squad with agha being utilised as a full time spinner.

I'm now 110% sure that Babar will be opening. Man I never thought my thread suggesting babar to open would come true lol.

But anyway babar will open and Agha + abrar will.be spinners. Tayyab will be the no 7 finisher.

I reckon Rizwan will open, a bar at 3,

Faheem and Khusdil are fine although Ifty should have been there instead of kamran gulam who is useless.

Batting as always is very short and One spinner i mean tournament in subcontinent not sure on that one.

Khushdil will be in there as the third spinner. I am fairly certain of this. Based on the squad they have it makes sense to select Khushdil because he brings left-arm spin im comparison to Agha's off-spin and Abrar's leg-spin

Maaf karo bhai. Nobody wants to see over the hill Ifti play international cricket again.

tt is crap,he cant play pace to save his life.Niazi was a proper bat.Absolute blunder from riz to select only his buddies.

I don’t think you are criticising him on cricketing merit. There is something about your SNGPL+Misbah agenda which Rizwan (actually the selection committee) didn’t conform to. You have an issue with that.

What players was he supposed to have selected for it to not be a ‘bottled selection’?

It makes sense, but I'm trying to get into rizzu's thinking process. But I may he wrong.

Faheem is part of the SNGPL team.

My issue is with Usman Khan, Faheem Ashraf's selection and the non selection of Sufiyan Muqeem

Sufiyan not being picked and faheem being picked is probably the 2nd most comical decisons I've ever seen pakistan take.

Even more brainless then having hasan Ali in wc 2023 squad and the 1st being azam Khan in wc 2024 squad.

Faheem is part of the SNGPL team.

Sufyan Muqeem isn’t ready

Usman Khan is the only guy who bats with a pair of akhrot after Fakhar Zaman in this squad

Faheem Ashraf is a safer option than Aamer Jamaal for seam all rounder spot.

They did Sufiyan Muqeem and Irfan Khan dirty.

Both should have been there in place of Faheem Ashraf and Usman Khan.
Usman is their due to Keeping clause, no other reason.

But it seems silly. Rizwan ain't getting injured in 5 games, he's a batsmen and on the field he moves the least. Unless he gets into some freakish death defying dive to save a boundary he won't get injured.

Plus he doesn't have a track record of getting injured. In 10 years of playing, he's only been injured once in the England series In t20.

And selecting faheem was a brain dead decison. No clue how he made it in

if they wanted an allrounder they should have selected abbas afridi

tt is club level, bumrah and co will eat him alive in the slog overs.Niazi was better.
Bumrah will eat anyone alive in slog overs. However it's safe to say any pacer will get rid of him in slog overs, even bangaldeshi and NZ bowlers
