[PICTURES] Angelo Mathews announces retirement from Test cricket [Update@ Post# 121]

Nothing to be surprised here, Mathews captained all the u-13 to u-19 teams and his dad is a cricket coach who owns an academy and he has older brothers who plays cricket. He was groomed to do this. He was one of those 10 year olds that you probably read about in a news scoring 100 runs.

One of the best bats in the world right now. Good luck trying ro get him out! Very solid consistent performer

Easily better than Kohli in tests at least. Disagreeing would be sort of biased.. has played so many GREAT innings and almost all under severe pressure.... great find for SL.

Over last 2 years hes blossomed into a very good test batsmen, i always just saw him as decent batsmen who could turn his arm over, since been made captain he seems to have taken on the mantle as a quality batsmen, his captaincy is still pretty defensive and will need to improve in long run.

I'll go out on a limb here and say he is the Imran khan of sri lanka. Matthews is gonna be big for lanka!

Chandimal double likes it and brings his 3 other younger brothers to like this comment too
sorry?
and btw Mathews is the one of the worst captains I've ever seen lol but that doesn't mean he's not a great batsman...

He is ranked number 13 in Tests.

A couple of players ahead of him that probably shouldn't be (Kohli, Pujara, Younis on current form) - but overall seems to be a fair assessment.

He'll overtake all of the above soon. Rising star.

What a batsman he's turning out to be. A millionaire's Misbah.

He'll probably be in top 8 by year's end.

He's in the form of his life. Lanka have found themselves a very very good batsman.. It was looking very bleak 2 years ago for them. Mathews is a very able batsman and needs another batsman or two after Sangakkara's retirement

Mathews now averages 79.61 in 10 tests as captain. He is now only second to Bradman who averaged 101.51 in tests as captain. :14:

Batting on 90* and approaching another hundred. Unfortunately it's against us. :mv

What a batsmen he is turning out to be. :14:

Mamoon Fan-girling. He is compact and composed as hell. Should do well out of SC.

Good but over-hyped. Has been a total failure outside his comfort zone, far worse than even Kohli in that department.

How come the poor conversion rate of Mathews don't get mentioned by those who bash Misbah for it?

Considering the fact that Misbah has to play a lot more consolidating and collapse-stopping innings than Mathews can even think of.

Mamoon you would've called it a poor innings and bad conversion rate had Misbah played this knock.

Just like Misbah, Mathews has a lot of between 50-100 innings.

Still, doesn't mean Mathews is bad in fact he's one of the best bats going around in Test cricket these days.

Thats true. He also has a poor conversion

Mathews is a rich man's Misbah. Yes his conversion rate needs to improve, but he's a much better batsman and has come a long way in the last few months.

He will score around 20-25 Test hundreds.

Averages 92 as captain. Not a bad way to respond to selectors faith in you.

A valuable 52 today against Aus. Was looking solid until the dismissal

Sri Lanka legend Angelo Mathews reached his 16th Test century during the only Test against Afghanistan in the 1st innings.

Given the caliber of his skills, I believe he deserves 20+ centuries.

He is currently batting at 109*(201).

37-year-old Angelo Mathews scores a fighting fifty against England in the 1st Test. He's fighting almost alone for Sri Lanka. Legend

He is the second best test batsman to emerge out of Asia in the last Decade, first is obviously Kohli.
I dont see anyone else who is better.

I think it is time for him to say good bye to test cricket at leat. his age has caught up to him now.

He is around for long but in Test cricket, he never had as big a impact. In white ball cricket, he was an excellent finisher and a decent bowling option in first half but regressed in second half.

Good knock vs England yesterday but not enough to save SL from a likely loss.

Speaking to the British media ahead of the start of play on day three of the 1st Test, Angelo Mathews had strong opinions on the ball change:

"It was unfortunate, to be honest. Yesterday we were sitting pretty until the ball was changed."

"I think it could be unfair for batters on both teams, because the batters want to get rid of the hard, shiny ball, and once we got to the 48-over mark, I think we were quite comfortably playing them."

"Once the ball was changed, I think it changed the entire momentum of the game. It started swinging both ways, it started nipping back in, so it was really difficult. The batters are waiting to get rid of the hardness of the ball, and it’s unfortunate that the ball was changed and it started swinging and it changed the whole complexion of the game."

"Taking nothing away from England, they bowled extremely well. It’s just that, it all depends on the manufacture of the ball as well. It could be from 2020 to 2023, it could have some changes, and also it’s all about having a set of rules around how you change the ball. If it doesn’t go through the rings (used to determine if the ball has become misshapen), yes it’s obvious."

"But if the seam position changes and all that, we kind of get rid of the seam by cutting the seam as well. It’s just my opinion, but it can be very disadvantageous for the set batters. We were quite comfortable and it changed the entire momentum of the game."

Angelo Mathews becomes the 3rd Sri Lankan after Sangakkara and Jayawardene to complete 8,000 Test runs.

Angelo Mathews retires from Test cricket

Angelo Mathews will retire from Test cricket after the first Test against Bangladesh in Galle, starting on June 17. He will remain available for white-ball selection "if and when my country needs me", he said in an announcement on his social media handle.

Mathews has not been picked in a white-ball Sri Lanka side in almost a year, but in any case, the forthcoming Test will mark the end of a Test career that will have stretched for 119 appearances. Mathews made his debut in the format in 2009, and has been more-or-less a fixture in the side since.

Sri Lanka Cricket bids farewell to Mathews after he posted a heartfelt note:

Still ended up with a pretty decent career but when you consider that seemed destined for greatness back in 2013, it doesn't feel like he lived up to the high expectations. I don't know if it was injuries, fitness, his attitude/approach towards the game, or. a combination of all three, but in the end it feels like he underachieved.

Family, Friends, Relatives, Teammates, Fans and Sri Lanka Cricket officials gathered for Angelo Mathews' farewell test. A great test career is just about to end.

Mathews bids farewell to Tests, eyes T20 World Cup glory

The veteran all-rounder made his 100th and final Test appearance for Sri Lanka in the first Test against Bangladesh in Galle.

Former Sri Lankan skipper, Angelo Mathews made his final appearance in royal whites against Bangladesh at Galle, the same venue he made his debut in 2009.

Mathews is the second-highest run scorer at the venue with 2253 runs in 34 Test matches.

While speaking in the post-match press conference, he spoke on the draw against Bangladesh, his final appearance in the red-ball format for Sri Lanka.

“Once you get a 400 in the first innings, it's really difficult to lose a game. So we had to bat really well in our first innings as well.

“I thought we scrapped our way through and to minimize the lead. And also in the second innings, Shanto batted brilliantly.”

Najmul Hossain Shanto scored 148 and 125* in both the innings as he led from the front and secured himself the Player of the Match award.

“It was a tough wicket for the bowlers, to be honest. There were times where it turned a little bit but didn't really have anything for the bowlers,” Mathews said, speaking on the wicket and opportunities for the bowlers.

“We could have pushed for a win, but unfortunately, we couldn't.”

While Mathews stepped away from the longest format, he spoke on his World Cup aspirations in the shorter formats of the game.

“I've still got six more months to go. I'll give it my best shot for the (2026) T20 World Cup.”

“I would love to sign off with a World Cup win. I'll just see how my body goes.”

Mathews was a part of the side which won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2014, beating India in the final.

The 38-year-old addressed the love he’s received since he announced his retirement last month.

“I'm overwhelmed.

“Ever since I announced my retirement, I just can't imagine the love that I have received up to now.”

“It is so special because you feel as a player, once you give your 110% to the country, the amount of appreciation that you receive is unbelievable.

“It feels so special, very heartwarming and I'm so thankful to all of them.”

While Mathews has retired from Tests, he will continue to remain available in the white-ball format.

Mathews' career has been eventful, even though he's never been one for drama.
