Veteran Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal has been named in his side's 15-member squad for the upcoming T20I series against Pakistan, beginning Friday, 24 January in Lahore.

The left-handed opener hasn't played international cricket since the ODI series against Sri Lanka in July last year. He had opted out of the India tour in November, Bangladesh's last international assignment, citing "personal reasons". The 30-year-old has been Bangladesh's most prolific batsman for more than a decade now and tops the all-time run-scoring charts for his team in each of the three formats.

Rubel Hossain, the right-arm pacer too makes an international comeback after nearly six months after having bagged 20 wickets from 13 games at the Bangladesh Premier League 2019-20. Senior batsman Mushfiqur Rahim is the most notable absentee from the 15-member contingent, having opted out of the tour, citing security concerns. Hasan Mahmud, the 20-year-old right-arm pacer earns his maiden international call-up.

The two teams will play three T20Is at Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium, followed by a Test in February, and an ODI and Test match in April, with both the five-day games being a part of the ICC World Test Championship.

Full squad: Mahmudullah (Captain), Tamim Iqbal, Soumya Sarkar, Naim Sheikh, Najmul Hossain, Liton Das, Mohammad Mithun, Afif Hossain, Mahedi Hasan, Aminul Islam, Mustafizur Rahman, Shafiul Islam, Al-Amin Hossain, Rubel Hossain, Hasan Mahmud

pretty solid squad apart from Raheem. Pak will have to do well to win a 3-0 here.

Excellent squad.

Will be a tough competition on good cricketing pitches. Our bowling needs to do really well here.

Won't be surprised if Bangladesh ends up winning the series. That's a pretty decent squad. Mushfiq is a big miss though.

Very good team. Tamim, Soumya and liton can take the game away in a few overs. And Mustafiz and Rubel are tricky with lots of experience.
Will be a good series. Looking fwd to it!!

Within the scope, this is probably the best squad that they could have selected. I was expecting Mehedi Rana to be picked, but they went for the other young pacer Hasan. Apart from Mushi & Shakib, another big loss is Saifudfin, but now there are couple of decent all-rounder in Mahedi & Al-Amin, Mahmood bowls as well.

Mehedi Rana is picked. Mehidy hasan miraz is not there.

Wasn’t expecting this. Thought they’d send their b team

A very good squad.

I actually know most of the names here lol

Good squad, we will hopefully see good cricket from both the sides.

Pak will have a tough time against this strong Bangladesh squad. Why? our batting is already non existent and bowlers inexperienced.

Mushfiq would have made no difference.

He's a dud vs. Pak.

Nah.
Mushfiqur’s never really performed against Pak in T20is

Last time Pak and Ban played a T20i was in 2016. A lot has changed since then. Mushfiq has not only played a lot more but also performed much better against top teams in the past 2-3 years. His absence would be surely felt.

Respect to Mahmudullah, he is my boy!

InshaAllah this guy becomes a cult hero in Pakistan like Balaji did

So the only player missing is Mushfiq. This team can easily defeat Pakistan.

Mahedi Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto are eager to prove their mettle in the upcoming T20 International series against Pakistan starting from January 24.

Mahmudullah Riyad will lead the Bangladesh side in the upcoming T20I series. Bangladesh team will fly for Pakistan on January 23 to play a three-match T20 series in Lahore on January 24, 25 and 27.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced T20 squad of the Tigers against Pakistan series on Saturday including Mahedi and Shanto in the squad.

Mahedi and Najmul were picked up in the squad considering their terrific performances in the just-concluded Bangabandhu Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) T20 Cricket.

Mahedi scored 253 runs in 13 matches with three fifties and took 12 wickets as well while Najmul piled up 308 runs with a century and a fifty. Najmul came to the limelight with a ton which was only the 5th century by a Bangladeshi batsman in the BPL history.

“It’s good that I’ve finally managed to return to the national team. But I wasn’t eager to get into the team. I’ve to play according to team management’s instruction and will try my best to be a regular member of the national team,” Mahedi told the media.

Shanto also expressed that he is keen to prove his prowess for the national side with good performance.

“I was never worried about my comeback in the national team. I just focused on my game. I’ve practiced a lot to improve my performance. I will try to keep playing better cricket for the national team,” Shanto told the media after being recalled in the senior national side.

Great squad.

Tamim was a bit uncertain due to a shoulder injury but good to see him back.

I think Mushfiq missing can be a blessing in disguise. We need to find a replacement for him as he is getting older.

Mushfiq is an excellent batsman who has played good inns against pakistan.
Anyone know his record in PSL where he would have faced most of the Pak squad in the past?

He played only 3 matches in 2016 PSL if I am not wrong with highest score of 33. He is a top performer in ODIs (One of the best middle order batsman at no 5-6 in sub continent) but not so much T20s.

I am quite relieved that Amir is not playing. That dude has an X factor about him. Bangladesh just have to see off Shaheen and go after the rest.

Looking forward to this series. Tamim needs to play good here. He hasn't played a great knock in a long time.

Amir proberly should have been included but then again they giving good signal to rest dont mess with us

I sense misbah already making defensive strategies after seeing bd squad. Guaranteed Pakistan will lose 3-0.

Strong squad this.

It should be a closely-fought series.

This BD team is far better than Sri Lankan T20 team which white washed Pakistan recently, so Pak has to raise their game to beat them. This BD team is capable of beating Pak team which is filled with some useless aged players like Hafeez, and BD team won't have to face Amir also.

Us losing to Sri Lanka was just a severe lapse in our judgement. Nothing went right for us.

If we play sri lanka today again in Pakistan again, i doubt we'd lose the series.

Is there any other back up keeper top order batsmen other than das you guys have in your circuit? I remember das's century vs us during Asia-cup. Was a pleasant to watch when on full flow

There are others but not worth mentioning currently. Liton should replace Mushfiq once he retires. Liton is only 25.

Even though Bangladesh team isn't as strong as Pakistan and without Shakib and Mushfiq they'll find it tough but Pakistan should not take this lightly. It is a T20 series and in T20s you only need individual brilliance to turn the match around.

decent squad. Rahim is a big loss as he is the core of our middle order. Tamim is no T20 opener. At best, he will go at 110-120 SR. Mahmudullah, Mohammed Naim, and Soumya is our best bet. Mustafiz has to lead the bowling attack.

On paper, Pak is a better a T20 team. Will be happy to avoid a whitewash and win one game at least.

Finally, it's good to see us playing again in Pak after 12 long years. Hoping for a good contest in front of a packed stadium.

Shakib, during a promotional activity for one of his endorsed brands dodged most of the questions related to cricket but did not hold back when it came to speaking of Team Bangladesh

All-rounder Shakib al Hasan is optimistic of Bangladesh achieving success in the three-match Twenty20 international series against host Pakistan.

Bangladesh team departed Dhaka Wednesday evening for the tour of Pakistan for the first time in more than a decade.

Shakib, during a promotional activity for one of his endorsed brands dodged most of the questions related to cricket but did not hold back when it came to speaking of Team Bangladesh.

The star all-rounder is currently serving a one-year ban, sanctioned by the International Cricket Council, for failing to report illegal approaches by a listed bookie.

“I would hope everyone will go there [Pakistan] safely and return home well after the series. Obviously, Bangladesh can get success there as Pakistan recently lost the three-game T20I series against Sri Lanka at their home 3-0. So, I think we should also do well,” said Shakib to the media Wednesday.

Bangladesh will take on Pakistan in the first T20I in Lahore Friday.

Since the ban, sighting Shakib in Mirpur has been a rarity.

However, he is in regular touch with national head coach Russell Domingo, the board members and players, informed the former Bangladesh Test and T20I captain.

Media queries were aplenty as to how Shakib is dealing with the ban but the cricketer himself was in no mood to make things public.

“For that you have to wait until I return to the field. If I say I have done a lot of things for the comeback but it’s not proven then it won’t be good and acceptable. Wait for it, if everything goes well you will get the answer,” said Shakib.

Bangladesh cricket team left here for Pakistan on Wednesday night to play a three-match T20I series in Lahore.

A chartered flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines carrying them took off from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 8pm and it will directly fly to Lahore.

Along with a 15-member squad of players, a total of eight support staff are accompanying the team during this series.

Bangladesh T20I captain Mahmudullah Riyad told the media that they are aiming to win the series in Pakistan.

“Pakistan have been playing well in the T20 format and doing well. But we’ve also displayed good performance in some notable matches. I’m hopeful of playing some enjoyable games in the series. If we can play our best cricket, we can win the series,” Mahmudullah told the media at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.

The first match of the series will take place on January 24 while the other two matches will be played on January 25 and 27. All the matches will be played on the same ground- Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore.

Bangladesh team will be provided presidential security during the series. As per media reports from Pakistan, a total of 10,000 cops will be deployed to ensure security for the Bangladesh team which might impact natural the game of the Tigers.

Mahmudullah, however, ruled out that idea. “I don’t think this way. No one of the members of Bangladesh is thinking this way. The decision has already been taken, and we’re ready to play cricket in Pakistan. We’re focusing only on our game and planning how we can win the series,” he had said.

The series was under a cloud for a long time due to the concern about the security situation in Pakistan. No team toured the country to play Test cricket after the infamous terror attack on the touring Sri Lankan cricket team in 2009 until Sri Lanka ended that drought in 2019.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) came to an agreement recently on condition of splitting the series into three phases. Bangladesh will now play only three-match T20 series

In the second phase, they will tour Pakistan for a Test, and in the third and final phase, Bangladesh will tour Pakistan for one ODI and one Test.

Bangladesh T20 squad for Pakistan tour: Mahmudullah Riyad (captain), Tamim Iqbal, Soumya Sarkar, Mohammad Naim, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Liton Das, Mohammad Mithun, Afif Hossain, Mahedi Hasan, Aminul Islam Bipblob, Mustafizur Rahman, Shafiul Islam, Al Amin Hossain, Rubel Hossain and Hasan Mahmud

Support Staff: Sabbir Khan Shafin (team manager), Russell Domingo (head coach), Ottis Gibson (bowling coach), Sohel Islam (fielding coach)

Not sure why the matches are in the middle of the day especially the ones on Friday and Monday.

It's perfect here in Canada. It starts 8:30 am so I can finally watch.

It is strange must be a reason as you would expect the crowd to come at night not afternoon

Any one in Canada know how one could watch these games? Will DAZN show them? In any case I would prefer to watch replays at a reasonable hour.

Besides the 15 cricketers, eight members of the coaching and support staff were also part of the touring party

Bangladesh cricket team’s players and officials reached Lahore, Pakistan safely Wednesday night at 11:30pm, Bangladesh standard time, ahead of the first of three Twenty20 internationals, scheduled to be held Friday at Gaddafi Stadium.

The second and third T20Is will also be held at the same venue Saturday and Monday respectively.

Split into three parts, Bangladesh will first play the three T20Is before traveling back home.

The Tigers will return to Pakistan to play the first of two Test matches in Rawalpindi, starting on February 7, before the Pakistani players take part in the Pakistan Super League T20.

Bangladesh will come back home before returning to Pakistan to play the lone ODI on April 3 and the second and final Test, starting on April 5 in Karachi.

Besides the 15 cricketers, eight members of the coaching and support staff were also part of the touring party

Bangladesh Cricket Board’s cricket operations committee chairman Akram Khan and chief national selector Minhajul Abedin also accompanied the 23-member contingent, along with a few security officials and media personnel.

Ahead of the first T20I, the Tigers will train Thursday evening, putting the finishing touch to their preparation.

Prior to their departure from Dhaka, a few Bangladesh cricketers talked to the media.

Among them, opening batsman Soumya Sarkar stressed on the importance of the junior players stepping up and make themselves counted in the absence of ace all-rounder Shakib al Hasan, who is serving a one-year ban, and Mushfiqur Rahim, who opted to skip the tour due to security concerns.

“A few senior players will not be part of the tour. Obviously, it would’ve been good if they were with us. We have to play with responsibility. As for the junior players, we have to give our best. Personally, I’d like to contribute with both bat and ball,” said Soumya.

On the other hand, middle-order batsman Mohammad Mithun said their major focus would be on cricket, and not the issues off the field.

He said, “There is no tension at all. If we keep it (tension) inside our head, it will only increase. So there is no benefit in thinking about all that (security concerns). We will go there to play, so our full focus should be on that. Hope we achieve something good in Pakistan.”

Paceman Shafiul Islam echoed the same sentiment.

He said, “No tension at all since the board (BCB) left no stone unturned. The only expectation is to do something good and come back home.”
