[PICTURES] Belgium defeat Netherlands 3-2 to win Hockey World Cup 2018

Was just looking at the second round cross over I know it's far a head but if in the event India finish second in their group and Pakistan finish third than in the cross over match India would lock horns with Pakistan in this World Cup

2-2 ended well, almost thought we are going to lose this and then win this lol.

India-Belgium the match of the tournament so far, the speed, the turnarounds, the steals, the tackles, OMG mind blown. Hugely entertaining 2-2 draw, we have a serious chance of topping our group now. Only issue is without Rupinder Pal Singh our PC conversion isn't looking good so far, also our tendency to concede late goals will eventually cost us big. Hope Sreejesh got his customary bad match out of the way, have never seen him concede 2 goals between his legs like today.

Argentina won their match Agaisnt New Zealand by a score of 3-0

Tomorrow

England will take on Australia
China will take on Ireland

Does anyone know how can we watch pak vs malaysia online? Fih official channel is not streaming anything.

lol..ill believe it when I see it..

Game ends in draw between Pakistan and Malaysia 1-1. Its not good Pakistan couldn't hold on to the lead

We drew to a team beaten by Dutch black and blue. The only thing PAK does not wanna do now is fall behind in the Goal difference knowing they would lose to NED. Can MAL beat GER? Let's see.

Well that was an intense match. Could have won it! Though our team isnt performing well but the matches are close and entertaining

Pakistan will lose to Netherlands the goals margin will be crucial but in this World Cup we have seen small teams draw Agaisnt bigger teams and Malaysia can draw Germany and if that's the case Malaysia would go through

This has been a very entertaining tournament, thanks mainly to the format/structure. Cricket should try this format with 16 teams for future World Cups. 4 groups, 4 direct QFists and crossover stage to decide the other 4, besides giving more chances to the associate teams this will also eliminate fiascos like 2007 WC when India/Pakistan were knocked out in the 1st stage. The stadium too looks fantastic, the financially poor Odisha government is doing a lot for sports in the state which is probably a good idea with the huge tribal population.

France upset Argentina by a score of 5-3 while New Zealand and Spain's played to a 2-2 draw

Argentina tops the group
While France finish second followed by New Zealand who finish 3rd
Spain is the first team to go home

Spain's exit has been shocking! France upsets World#2 Argentina.

If we end up 3rd in the group, we will likely face Belgium who are ranked #3.

Pakistan vice captain amad butt is handed a one game suspension due to tackle he did during the Malaysia game and is due to miss the match Agaisnt Netherlands

Pakistan captain m Rizwan Sr is out of the rest of the tournament due to an injury

2 big blows for Pakistan

Pakistan to miss key players in their clash against the Netherlands

Pakistan hockey team will miss their captain Muhammad Rizwan Sr, Abu Bakar and the vice-captain Amad Butt in their all-important game against the Netherlands on Sunday.

The skipper, Rizwan Sr suffered a blow during Pakistan’s contest against Malaysia, where he fractured the second toe of his left foot. Due to the severity of his injury, the captain is out of the whole World Cup campaign.

Whereas, Abu Bakar is also carrying an injury, which is likely to keep him on the bench in the game against the Dutch.

On the other hand, Butt is banned for one match by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) for allegedly hitting a Malaysian player in their previous encounter. The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) appealed against the punishment, but the decision remained intact.

The management has not yet finalised the replacements of these three players for their upcoming assignment of the World Cup.

Earlier, Pakistan lost their opening game against Germany by 1-0, while they managed a draw against Malaysia with 1-1.

BHUBANESWAR: The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has initiated an inquiry against Pakistan hockey team’s assistant coach Danish Kaleem for breaching security protocol, adding to the list of off-field issues plaguing the former world champions at the ongoing World Cup in Bhubaneswar.

Danish has been called for a hearing by the FIH’s technical delegate on Saturday after he was charged for moving around in the stadium without having his accreditation card during the pool ‘D’ match against Malaysia on Wednesday, according to a Press Trust of India report.

With the World Cup nearing halfway stage, Pakistan’s campaign is getting from bad to worse due to a host of issues, which includes an injury blow to skipper Mohammad Rizwan Senior and a one-match suspension to his deputy Ammad Butt.

Struggling green-shirts face the Dutch in crucial pool match tomorrow

As if that was not enough, Hockey India has now lodged an official complaint with International Hockey Federation’s technical delegate Christian Deckenbrock of Germany against Danish for breaching security protocol and misbehaving with security persons inside the stadium.

ARTICLE CONTINUES AFTER AD

Pakistan’s chief coach Tauqeer Dar admitted things are far from rosy for his side on and off the field ahead of their crucial pool match against the Netherlands on Sunday.

“The last few days have been very hard,” Dar told reporters after a practice session of the team on Friday. “Most energies are being wasted on things other than sports.”

He added, “One of our main players, our skipper, has fractured his toe and is out of the tournament. Our vice-captain has been banned by the technical delegate. The reason, we have no clue.

“There was no action taken on the ground. No penalty corner was given and no green card was given. One more inquiry about our coach that has been lodged by Hockey India. A new enquiry every day.”

Explaining the reasons behind the inquiry, Dar said: “Me and Danish sit on the terrace and watch match.

And we communicate with walkie-talkie to [manager] Hasan Sardar and [assistant coach] Rehan Butt [assistant coach].

“At half time against Malaysia, I had sent [Danish] with some notes to Hasan bhai. When he was coming back, he was stopped by the security and they asked for his accreditation card. Unfortunately, he forgot his card in the dressing room but the security people misbehaved with him. Yesterday, [Hockey India] lodged a complaint,” he elaborated.

Dar termed Ammad’s suspension as completely unfair and said one of the Pakistani players had to get stitches on his head after being hit by a Malaysian player but no action was initiated against him. “Hasan Sardar was emailed in the morning that there is a decision pending against Ammad Butt and that he has done something very wrong,” Dar said.

“[Ammad] went to the enquiry, but there is no evidence. But that is the decision of the technical delegate. We have appealed against that and I hope sanity prevails.

“He was shown a video for just two or three minutes. It shows a Pakistani rusher trying to save a PC.

“A Malaysian forward is trying to score. One of our boys Abu Bakr got stitches because of a stick from a Malaysian boy. But that’s okay. It’s hockey, not ping pong,” the coach said.

A FIH spokesperson later confirmed that both the hearings, that of Ammad’s appeal against suspension and the inquiry against Danish, will be conducted on Saturday.

Dar, meanwhile, said the off-field issues are having an adverse effect on the Pakistan players.

“We are in bad shape mentally. We are focusing on things other than [what happens on] the ground,” he said.

“Only 15 [players] left for the match against the Netherlands. It is a major handicap as we are minus one tyre of a car against the Dutch, one of the toughest teams in the tournament,” the former Olympian said.

Hockey World Cup 2018: From visiting landmarks to buying sarees, Pakistan have a field day off the field

While they have expressed paranoia over the actions of the organisers and rival teams in the last few days, off the field, Pakistan have been soaking in the atmosphere around the World Cup.

Pakistan have been soaking in the atmosphere around the World Cup.
Watching a film at a theatre — India’s most expensive movie, the Rajnikath starrer 2.0, or the family comedy Badhaai Ho — visiting Puri’s beaches and the Sun temple in Konark, exploring local malls and purchasing traditional gifts are the off-the-field agenda of the Pakistan hockey team during their three-week stay in Bhubaneswar for the World Cup.

While they have expressed paranoia over the actions of the organisers and rival teams in the last few days, off the field, Pakistan have been soaking in the atmosphere around the World Cup. In the past, the norm for most Pakistani teams visiting India has been to stay indoors, leaving the hotel only for official events, because of security reasons. But in a refreshing change, India’s arch-rivals on the field been given the freedom to travel in and around Bhubaneswar. A stringent security cover is in place but every attempt has been made to ensure that Pakistan players get to explore the city where they have come to play the World Cup, and the players are not letting the opportunity go.

“The schedule of the tournament is such that there are a lot of free days between two matches. We get bored at the hotel but thankfully, we have been allowed to travel without too much restriction,” Pakistan captain Muhammad Rizwan says. “I have heard a lot about the beaches here, and the Sun temple. If we get time, we would like to go there.”

“When we came to Delhi for the World Cup and Commonwealth Games in 2010, we would simply have to sit in the hotel room because of security reasons. But here in Bhubaneswar, we are getting a lot of freedom to roam around. The hospitality has been incredible. In fact, we took tips from our security officers to buy sarees,” says former Pakistan captain Rehan Butt, who is here as the team’s coach.

While they have received friendly reception wherever they have gone, on-field, Pakistan have had troubled last few days, giving rise to conspiracy theories in their camp. On Wednesday, their former coach Roelant Oltmans lodged a complaint against defender Ahmad Butt for ‘intentionally’ hurting one of the Malaysian players during a penalty corner defence. Butt was summoned for a hearing on Saturday and was let off with a reprimand. On Thursday, the International Hockey Federation pulled up their assistant coach Danish Kaleem for not wearing his accreditation card while entering official areas. To make matters worse, their captain Mohammad Rizvan had to pull out of the tournament after he fractured his toe. “We have struggled to focus on hockey in the last few days. May be this is all tactic from rival teams to distract us,” coach Tauqeer Dar said.

However, the on-field troubles have hampered their plans to explore the city. Last week, when they visited the city’s biggest mall, they were mobbed by roughly 200 fans for autographs and selfies. Even during their first match against Germany, the Pakistan team received a thunderous welcome by a packed crowd. “The reception we have received is like a dream. Everyone has been so kind and hospitable,” says Butt.

But one thing perplexes the Pakistani legend. Not a day has passed when someone hasn’t persuaded him to watch 2.0, the latest Rajnikanth movie. And he cannot figure out why. “Some of us are really keen to watch Badhaai Ho. Since there is just one show very early in the morning, we haven’t been able to go for it. So we have been asking around for good recommendations and everyone is telling me to watch Rajnikanth,” Butt says.

They are, however, shadowed by the security guards closely. Of the 16 teams participating at the World Cup, Pakistan’s security is the tightest – they have one pilot and two protection vehicles escorting the team. Every time the team leaves its hotel, the road leading up to their destination is cordoned off and the traffic is stopped.

The team management has been told to give the security team a 24-hour notice before they plan any visits so they can sanitize the place. That rule, however, was relaxed on Monday, when the team made an impulsive plan. The players wanted to buy sarees. Bored sitting in their hotel, they wanted to venture out. Initially, the security won’t let them leave their hotel.

It was turning into an awkward scenario as the team management kept on persisting. Eventually, the security detail assigned to the team relented. They alerted the police station near the main market; they in turn cordoned off the area and only after that were the players taken to the shop, where they spent a couple of hours buying sarees for their friends and family.

Almost every Pakistani player and official is gushing about the reception they have received since arriving in Bhubaneswar on November 24. The mood is exact opposite to the one four years ago, when they left some players of the Pakistani team got involved in an ugly exchange with a section of the crowd at the Kalinga Stadium after they beat India in the semifinal of the Champions Trophy in 2015. In the aftermath of it, India snapped all bilateral hockey relations with Pakistan and forced them to issue an apology. Since then a lot of water has flown under the bridge.

Hockey World Cup: Australia break Pakistan's record

In the celebrations of their 11-0 demolition of China on Friday, the Kookaburras may have fallen two goals shy of biggest win in World Cup history; but what they perhaps didn't realise was that they still broke a record set 36 years ago by Pakistan of 15 consecutive wins in world cups (1978 & 1982).

Damn impressive pressure by Green shirts.... 1-1

Chuk ke rakho shaheenon

Pakistan doing great, hope they win so that we have a shot at Indo-Pak QF.

Pakistani players are technically inferior... don't have the stick control or passing under pressure.

At the end of the World Cup....

Get together 30 best players, give them 6 months wages upfront and put them through gruelling strength and conditioning camp for the next 6 months.

Netherlands beat Pakistan 5-1

Germany advance to quarter finals directly

Netherlands finish second and will play Canada in the cross over the winner of that match will take India in the quarter finals

Pakistan finish 3rd and will play Belgium in the crossover the winner of that match will play Germany in the quarter finals

This is crazy scheduling, so many rest days in pool stage but less than 24 hours for the teams between SF and F/3rd place game.

Pakistani forwards are embarrassingly bad, their colleagues create plenty of goal scoring opportunities only for them to mess it up in the final touch/run. Too much reliance on PCs? Have observed this for quite some time, it seems Pakistanis are unable to score field goals at all, during Sohail Abbas' days this wasn't an issue but now they are really struggling.

Didn't we won a game against Belgium in Champions trophy this year ?

They do score field goals too but not often even the goal the scored it wasn't from the penelty corner it self it was off a rebound play and even in penelty corners Pakistan doesn't score much more than their forwards who set up good plays but have trouble finishing it's our defence which is bad and even goal keeping Imran butt is decent by he makes some technical errors which cost us goals one thing India has really strong is their goalkeeper Srjeesh he is a came changer indeed when this guy retires India will miss him dearly

Hard to look past Australia, they are at a different level. I think only Netherlands can stop them from winning the Cup.

Unless we improve our second half game, we will have no chance against Belgium. I really hope IK government help revive sports in Pakistan.

We also need to convert on our chances make sure are passes are completed and not wasted play great defense but if Pakistan are to win that game it will come down to one man Imran butt he will have to play the game of his life

Unpredictable Pakistan make cross over stage despite defeat

Unpredictability and Pakistan sport are almost like inseparable partners, so much so that when any of the country's sporting team does the exact opposite of what is expected of it, people tend to go, "Oh, Pakistan have done a Pakistan".

The country's hockey team has done its bit in keeping that phrase going, managing to qualify for the knockout stage of this Hockey World Cup despite a turbulent build-up and a league campaign littered with off-field distractions.

That the neighbours made it to the cross-over stage even after being swept aside 1-5 by Netherlands here on Sunday is thanks to Malaysia, who went down by an even bigger margin to the Dutch and thereby lost out on the third spot in Pool D to Pakistan.

Pakistan will take that favour from Malaysia, though, considering they almost did not make it to Bhubaneswar.

The cash-strapped Pakistan Hockey Federation was struggling to find sponsors to fund their team's World Cup participation only about a month before the start of the tournament, until the owner of a Pakistan Super League – a domestic cricket tournament – bailed them out.

Once here, they settled the insecurities with an assured show against the mighty Germans, a 0-1 loss giving the world No. 13 team enough confidence to hold Malaysia 1-1 in their next game.

However, stability and Pakistan can't get along too well for too long.

A day after the Malaysia game, their captain Muhammad Rizwan Sr was ruled out of the rest of the tournament with a finger injury, while their vice-captain Ammad Butt was handed a one-match ban for a rough tackle, which was reduced to a reprimand by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) Technical Delegate on Saturday.

Worse, their assistant coach was also handed a reprimand for a security offence of walking around the Kalinga Stadium here without his accreditation.

Amidst all these issues that relate to anything but their on-field play, one could forgive the Pakistanis for being a demoralised unit bereft of any will to fight.

"We kept the players away from all this," Pakistan coach Rehan Butt said here on Sunday.

"A lot of the credit for that goes to (manager and legendary Pakistan player) Hassan Sardar, who handled all these issues really well. He didn't involve me as well. He told me, 'you just focus on coaching'," he added.

Butt, a former national player himself, however, did admit that deep down, constant off-field distractions did affect his boys, who will take on third-ranked Belgium in the cross-over.

"The players are a bit disappointed with these kinds of issues. Somewhere, it has affected the team," he said.

Stopwatch: Germany 5 (Timm Herzbruch 2, 59, Christopher Ruhr 14, Marco Miltkau 18, 39) beat Malaysia 3 (Razie Rahim 26, 42, Nabil Noor 28), Netherlands 5 (Thierry Brinkmann 7, Valentin Verga 27, Bob de Voogd 37, Jorrit Croon 47, Mink van der Weerden 59) beat Pakistan 1 (Umar Butta 9)

Finished 5-1

All rather embarrassing

why? What are you expecting? The fact they have somehow managed to get on a plane to the tournament is a miracle in itself. The fact they have got to the crossover is again a miracle. If they beat Belgium they should declare a holiday in Pakistan.

This is a team that has been neglected, treated like utter garbage and paid a pittance, yet still manages to put on that shirt and play.

I'll tell you one thing, give a good govt some time and give these lads a good wage and Pakistan hockey will return. The rules are such that they should suit our game down to a tee now. Be patient and Inshallah we will see good times return. But for now its time to batten down the hatches and take these losses on the chin.

It was utterly embarrassing to see such level of fitness and skill set. It was really disheartening. Pakistan Hockey needs investment, that is pretty obvious... more than anything they have to work on the strength and conditioning of the players.

Crossover stage started yesterday. England defeated NZ 2-0 while France beat China 1-0. So 2 QFs have been decided, Argentina-England and Australia-France. Today we have the other 2 crossover matches, Belgium-Pakistan and Canada-Netherlands. India and Germany will get to know who their QF opponents are in a few hours.

BHUBANESWAR: Pakistan face Belgium in an all-important cross-over match for a place in the quarter-final of the ongoing Hockey World Cup in Bhubaneswar, India today.

The lone point that the men in green earned in their group D match was against Malaysia, where they were held to a 1-1 draw. They lost their other two games, 1-0 to Germany and 5-1 to the Netherlands.

On the other hand, Belgium won their opening game of the tournament 2-1 to Canada, 5-1 against South Africa and were held 2-2 against India.

Pakistan and Belgium have played against each other twice in the World Cup, with Pakistan winning both the times, 2-0 in 1973 and 3-2 in 2002.

The match between Pakistan and Belgium will start at 4:15pm Pakistan Standard Time.

Disappointing performance by Pakistan who failed to win a single match in this edition, probably the only time it has ever happened in their glorious World Cup history. Do you think parting ways with Roelant Oltmans played a role in the debacle in Asian Champions Trophy as well as this World Cup? I thought the team was making good progress under him.

Even India benefited greatly when he was our coach. Afterall he has incredible coaching credentials, guiding the Dutch team to Olympics Gold and World Championship title in the 90s. Also based on his interviews I thought he was very passionate about Asian hockey, more than money or power he wanted to help us guys compete with the best of the West. Still rankles me that our arrogant board fired him under the influence of insecure senior players.

No. The Pakistan Hockey situation is very very poor. There is zero money in the game, the grounds are looking bad, there is no interest, its literally on life support. The players are not paid, we have a very poor national league. Its apocalyptic.

it will take a good decade to get Pakistani back into the top ten. It can be done and quickly if you have the money and coaching but as of now your looking at more results like the above.

Even if he coached they would have more or less same performance their was improvement but these things take timed he stayed coach for 2 years for sure he would take the team in the right direction but a corrupt board a lack of Intrest in the sport and not much new talent coming out of the country due to Intrest in cricket by the people in the country has led to the downfall, I still believe with time this team will get better but it will be a slow process. But these things don't happen overnight. Even India when they were not doing well in the sport missing out of olympics in 2012 they turned it around and credit to them but again it didn't happen overnight.

I do remember sadly the great days of subcontinental hockey, with Pakistan slightly ahead of India but both contenders for championship.

We were very good till late 70s/early 80s but then the decline set in. Pakistan were very good till early/mid 90s before the Western teams started dominating the podium places. Pakistan is the most successful team in World Cups while we are the most successful team in Olympics. These are the 2 most prestigious events in the world of hockey and till now no other team has taken the record from us.
