Netherland and Germany in our group. Getting out of this would be a massive achievement.

Ah didnt know hockey WC was round the corner. Don’t follow hockey much now that I live in the UK. I wonder if any of the channels on sky will be showing the event..

Our group tho... Good luck qualifying :misbah

Pakistan was once a force in field hockey. They won 4 of the first 7 world cups most by any mulq and have not won anything since.

In terms of past winners yes Pakistan has the most titles

Pakistan won World Cup 4 times
Netherlands and Australia have won it 3 times
Germany won it 2 times
And India winning it 1 time

Meanwhile our training and fitness camp for the preparation of this world cup has not been set up yet due to lack of funds.

Hockey needs more money. I was watching the Asian Champions Trophy and the Man of the Match was getting 150$ as prize money, who plays for peanuts? No wonder our youth aren't taking interest in this cash starved sport. Even from Western nations looks like their 10th tier athletes take up hockey after failing in more high profile sports like football, tennis, rugby, cricket, athletics etc. I used to think it was a very competitive global game but having second thoughts now. Surely with such bleak competition in this low profile sport we Asian teams can do better if we really strive hard? As such we people suck in most of the sports and hence can get our best athletes into field hockey with a good policy.

Theirs a lot of good teams I feel Australia and Netherlands will do well and maybe either or will win the whole thing. Despite Argentina and Belgium doing very well in the past 2 years I don't think they will do too well this time around I feel India will have a good tournament too

On a side note we have a thread for this but if anyone has seen Pakistan kit which is sponser by Haier Zalmi it is a really nice kit :)

What I saw from Asian Champion's Trophy.... skill wise Pak are amongst the best in the world, but that is individual player skill and not skill of the whole unit to break down a defense. Most of Pakistan's attacking forays were built on an individual player taking two or three defenders head-on and dodging them on his way into the D, then he either made it an easy chance for someone else, took a shot himself or looked for a penalty corner. Our conversion infront of goal wasn't great either, most of our goals came from penalty corners. Side note, we might have found another Sohail Abbas in that Shakeel lad. He has rocket flicks. The constant problem of fitness still remains. We were 4-1 up against Malaysia in the first half and then relaxed and let them get back to 4-4 in the second half. Even though we won in the penalties but this was not good.

Pakistan has always been a team of Indivual skill even In the days of golden era it was Indivual skill that made us champions, obviously the game has changed and it requires much more than Indivual skill. One thing is a side from poor defense skills I think the goal keeping needs to improve to sometime Imran butt react to earlier or too late on some goals. As a team moving. Forward they need to work better as a team I always find their trying to find a defenseman feet in the circle so they can win a penelty corner because as you mentioned which is true most of our goals come from penelty corners. Speaking of drag flicks Aleem Bilal has a very good shot too

It's sad how neglected Hockey feels, then again I haven't been trying too hard to keep up with it myself.

Pak Hockey is similar to our Cricket. Anything can happen!

7 days away from the grand event looking forward to this

Tournamenet will kick off as of the 28th

South Africa vs India ( host)

Pakistan first match will be on the 1st of December when they take on Germany

LAHORE: Pakistan’s national hockey squad left for India on Saturday morning to take part in the World Cup which will be held in Bhubaneswar.

The Mohammad Rizwan Senior-led team departed for the neighbouring country via Wagah Border to participate in the World Cup that will be staged from Nov 28 to Dec 16 at the Kalinga Stadium. Pakistan are placed in pool ‘D’ alongside Holland, Germany and Malaysia for the 16-nation showpiece.

Pool ‘A’ includes Argentina, France, New Zealand and Spain; pool ‘B’ contains defending champions Australia, China, England and Ireland while Belgium, Canada, South Africa and hosts India constitute pool ‘C’.

Former four-time world champions Pakistan — who won the World Cup in 1971, 1978, 1982 and 1994 — begin their campaign at the mega event with the pool match against Germany on Dec 1.

The green-shirts take on Malaysia on Dec 5 before facing the Netherlands in their last pool-stage on Dec 9.

Hockey World Cup 2018 Opening Ceremony Highlights: The Hockey World Cup 2018 taking place in Bhubaneswar was declared open with a grand opening ceremony at the Kalinga Stadium, which saw Bollywood stars enthrall the audience with their performances on Tuesday. Shah Rukh Khan recreated the Chak de India moment with his iconic dialogues while Madhuri Dixit performed on Mother Earth in a ballet that celebrated tribal cultue of India as well as the mixture of the influence of West with the East. The ceremony came to a perfect end with a performance by AR Rahman.

How exactly is germany ranked so high? Is it a commercially viable sport there?

Hockey isn't a commercial hit anywhere, that is why it is such a low profile sport even after so many decades. Europeans can't tap into their best talent who prefer football, tennis, athletics, swimming, combat sports, rugby etc and only the low tier athletes look at hockey as a career option, things aren't so bad in Netherlands where hockey is actually quite popular. But other countries including Germany don't attract the best talent for hockey, still they are far superior to Asian talent because we suck at sports.

Germany has been a traditional powerhouse in hockey since the game's inception. Always a major contender in Olympics, WC and other high profile events. Only in the recent past have they slightly dipped compared to AUS, BEL, ARG, NED but they are still a top team.

I'm expecting an early exit, but looking forward to the world cup in four years. Hopefully with new funding we can put up a better performance next time..Would like to see some goals and grit..thats all..expectations are beyond low.

I think Belgium will top our group, they are one of the 3 main contenders for the Cup IMO.

Nah I think India will top the group their well prepared and also their home team as well. Don't look to much into rankings either especially during a World Cup tourney. Even Pakistan gave Belgium a scare in champions trophy

Belgium has been our bogey team recently . IIRC they knocked us out in last 2 big tournaments , so am happy to face them in league phase than a KO again though I think they are not as strong as they where couple of years back

They beat us 3-1 in the Rio Olympics QF after trailing 0-1 after the 1st 2 quarters, can't forget that because it was a painful blow to our dreams.

This is true their not as strong as they were before br still a good team

It does not sound like Pak is fit enough to play a WC tournament. So many times they have looked bad recently in the last 2 quarters Vs the starting 2.

Hockey World Cup 2018: Hasan Sardar lays down the law on players' behaviour even as Pakistan feel hassled by security detail

Pakistan's hockey players are not too pleased with the security detail following them all the time. If they are feeling confined to moving around with the security personnel surrounding them all the time, it has a lot to do with the instance of 2014 Champions Trophy where their celebrations – after defeating India in the semi-final encounter – went over the top. Some obscenity was discovered in the gestures they made at the galleries and it led to suspensions and warning from the International Hockey Federation (FIH). Hockey India insisted on a written apology before even staging an FIH event featuring Pakistan.

A senior member of the squad complained to The Hockey Insider that they were feeling cramped with the intense security provided to them, while other teams had just a fraction of the security detail around them. After some elements announced they would protest Pakistan's appearance in Bhubaneswar, the Odisha state government and tournament organisers have increased the security around the Pakistan squad.

While the security may be intense and somewhat stifling, the Pakistan team's mood was lifted by the warm reception they received during the World Cup's opening ceremony. The cheers from the spectators were second only to those for the Indian captain, which ought to have reminded the Pakistani squad that the Bhubaneswar crowds had supported them even in 2014 until the encounter against India.

However, their "obscene" gestures in the celebrations after defeating India seemed to have rubbed the hockey fans the wrong way. It turned the entire crowd during the final in Germany's favour, and the Germans acknowledged it by applauding the spectators as "a home crowd" after winning the title. The flowers that the Pakistan team had thrown at the galleries were spurned. A few obscene gestures had done the damage.

Going into the World Cup, the team management, headed by former Pakistan captain Hasan Sardar, has drawn a strict line against poor on-field behaviour for this squad, insisting in the team meetings that earning applause from the Bhubaneswar hockey fans was among the achievable targets set for this tournament.

For a team that carries the tag of being four-time World Cup champions and failed to qualify for the 2014 edition, Pakistan's squad has been given a message that is loud and clear: "Bad behaviour will not be tolerated."

A legend of Pakistan hockey and the star centre-forward of the all-conquering team of the early 80s, the suave Sardar was appreciated around the world. His dazzling on-field skills of yore are matched by his composed behaviour as the team manager even in adverse situations. His choice as team manager – a designation Pakistan hockey gives to the boss as in football – could have a lot to do with the professed target of earning appreciation from Indian spectators

Returning to Bhubaneswar's Kalinga Hockey Stadium, the same venue, four years later, the Pakistan team has reasons to wonder if the spectators would have forgotten the incidents of 2014.

Drawing a line on the behaviour expected from his players, Sardar is eager to get the Bhubaneswar crowd behind the team. "Other than matches where we played India, the hockey fans of India had always rooted for Pakistan. My game was appreciated a lot by the Indian spectators who applauded us all the way to winning the World Cup in Bombay in 1982," says Sardar.

Before coming to India, this Pakistan squad was told by the team management that their behaviour will be under scrutiny.

In fact, just a month ahead of the World Cup, Sardar made the Pakistan Hockey Federation recall coach Mohammad Saqlain from the Asian Champions Trophy in Muscat owing to his bad behaviour when asked not to abuse the players who had just lost to India in a league match.

Pakistani players told The Hockey Insider that Saqlain, a former captain, was screaming at the players when Sardar intervened and told him not to use harsh words as the boys were young and would learn from their mistakes. At this juncture, Saqlain used harsh words at the manager himself. It required just one phone call from Sardar for the PHF to ask coach Saqlain to board the first flight back home.

As the team manager, Sardar is aware that flowers cannot buy peace with the spectators after their on-field behaviour caused rancour. The Pakistan team manager wants applause to be earned for their dazzling play and good behaviour.

Australia’s quest for a record hat-trick of titles started with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Ireland in the opening Pool D match of the men’s hockey World Cup here on Friday.

Having won the back-to-back World Cups in 2010 and 2014, world no.1 Australia came into the ongoing tournament as a firm favourite but they were far from impressive and were made to toil hard by Ireland in their opener.

World no. 10 Ireland gave Australia a run for their money with impressive display in both attack and defence. The Kookaburras were dismal with penalty corners, converting just one out of five.

Blake Govers (11th minute) and Tim Brand scored for the winners, while Ireland’s lone goal came from the sticks of Shane O’Donoghue.

Ten places might separate the two teams, but the Irish fought valiantly and matched the title holders stick-for-stick in the first two quarters.

In fact, it was Ireland who had the first shot at the goal and Australia goalie Andrew Charter had to come up with a double save to deny Sean Murray and then Matthew Nelson from the rebound in the fourth minute.

Australia grew in confidence as time passed by and earned a penalty stroke in the 11th minute but the umpire’s decision was changed to penalty corner after Ireland asked for video referral.

From the resultant penalty corner, Australia secured another and this time Govers’ flick found the back of the Irish net.

But Australia’s lead lasted just two minutes as Ireland drew level when O’Donoghue scored after he was set up by Murray, who dribbled past two defenders to pass the ball on to the goal scorer.

The second quarter too produced exciting hockey as both the teams went on the offensive and it was Australia who came close to scoring, but Ireland captain David Harte made a fine save in front of the post to deny Dylan Wotherspoon.

Five minutes into the quarter, Ireland secured their first penalty corner and Charter came to Australia’s rescue and kept out O’Donoghue’s attempt.

Towards the end of the second quarter, Australia secured back-to-back penalty corners but wasted both as the two teams went into the halfway break locked at 1-1.

Australia restored their lead four minutes after the breather through Brand. Corey Weyer’s workmanship in the midfield finally helped Australia when his inch-perfect through ball found Brand unmarked inside the box and the striker scored from his second attempt.

England vs China is a shocking result. Can't believe China managed a draw against a top ranked side.

Where can I watch the Pak match online and what time?

Game starts at 6:30pm pak time or 8:30am EST.

I believe FIH official YouTube channel is streaming matches Live.

thats good, we created some chances against this top ranked side, if we win this match, got some good chances for the rest of the tournament

We usually regress in the 2nd half due to poor fitness levels so I won't be expecting much.

Pak has been weak in the 2nd half lately. I hope they have prepared better for this WC.

Whats up with the fitness of Pak Players. We need a very strict diet and exercise regime for them.

Why is this or any matches not being shown live on the Hockey youtube channel as was told? Someone please tell me.

Pak players have to many Paratha's in their stomach it seems!:narine

They actually expect people to pay to watch these matches since its world cup therefore TV broadcasting rights

Good effort from the boys considering Germany is ranked 6th and we are 13th

The top 3 go through so as long as we beat Malaysia we go through to the next round

Hockey is a different game now compared to when Pak was dominating. It's gonna be mega difficult for Pak to bring back the glory days. Even the surface the game was played on then appears different now. Certain rules have also changed that seem to benefit European sides. Correct me if I am wrong?

Pakistan should have scored 2 goals easily missing good chances cost them the game Germany converted on thier chance and won the game

In the other match up today Netherlands beat Malaysia 7-0 also not related but if anyone knows where I can get the Pakistan hockey kit it would be appreciated it thanks

I am not into hockey but wouldnt it be available online? Google search?

I couldn't find a channel on dish showing Pak vs Germany. Very disappointing coverage.

Pakistani forwards were so slow, unagile, dumb and lazy, sorry if I am being harsh. They missed some sitters while Germans converted a half chance, match was even stevens and a draw or Pak win wouldn't have been an unfair result by any means IMO. I don't see them challenging the Dutch but Pak should beat Malaysia and enter the playoffs with a similar performance. Till now the tournament has been engaging and the crowds have been electric, should be a cracker of a WC.

If they can convert their chances Agaisnt the Dutch than they can achieve a good results but their problem has been finishing if you can't finish you don't win games simple I do hope they can have a close contest with the Dutch
