[PICTURES] DRS saves Temba Bavuma but are Pakistan justified in being disappointed?

it hit the top of pad & was missing stumps , what is there to be disappointed about ?

Yes, definitely. Even considering millimeters, it is definitely possible for the air movement generated by the ball as it whizzes past the stumps removing the bails. My 2 cents. South Africa have been pretty lucky this innings.

Pakistan have been getting benefit of doubt this series, that should be somewhat encouraging.

Pakistan's batting has been worse than the umpiring. To hark on these decisions and justify Pak bowlers shoulders going down is not valid excuse. Sri Lanka also get similar decisions against them Windies were treated worse in Bangladesh but they picked themselves up and went back to their run up with more hunger. There is no other way.

had it not hit the pads & missed stumps by millimeters , would you be disappointed ?

This series has seen some real biased umpiring against South Africans, and I am glad that DRS saved them from these umpiring blunders.

Of course Pakistani fans will be disappointed, but in the end, correct call was made, and that's what matters.

had it not hit the pads & missed stumps by millimeters , would you be disappointed ?

no I am saying that missing by millimeters as per a computer simulation does not seem right - margin of error needs to be bigger and the umps decision should stand.

Isn't that what umpires call is for?

If it was given out, Bavuma would have reviewed and it would have been overturned. It's not even umpire's call , which means it is even beyond the margin for error for the system.

I dont see what the issue is. Not out. Move on. Nothing to be disappointed about.

It's the same in all sports MenIng bhai. These simulations are taken as a real world representation, and it's the same across all sports, take Tennis line-calls for example.

Increasing margin of error serves no purpose as even that will suffer from the same simulation ambiguity.

i disagree , computer simulation is not enough reason to enhance the red zone [ stump ] area . Umpire's call to stand in such cases would make the whole concept of DRS redundant .

As pointed above that’s why umpires call is there otherwise where do you draw the line? You have to come up with a solution before pointing out flaws in the system.

Same is the case with DL method. Love it or hate that’s still the best possible method there is and there hasn’t been a bette time yet.

Well it is what it is but i guess the bowling side would be a little disappointed.

Sounds very similar to what BCCI once said.

I had to re-check I was on Pakistani forum...for a moment I thought I landed on some Bangladeshi forum seeing complaints like this and the other one where pitch is the excuse. How mighty have fallen. Pakistan cricket surely declining.

Yes and we should go and check how everyone on this forum attacked BCCI

I know.

I still hold the view that if we can't believe the technology 100% for prediction, we should not use that.

no I am saying that missing by millimeters as per a computer simulation does not seem right - margin of error needs to be bigger and the umps decision should stand.

So you are questioning the technology just because the decision was not in the favour? what next?

He was outside the crease. He was tip toed. Pitch offers bounce. So there was a chance it was going over stumps. To naked eye front on vision most of them will look out.

Hawkeye showed it was missing the stumps. How can anyone have problems with it?

Dissapointed in what sense?

Dissapointed because they were convinced it was out when actually it wasn't? Yes - sure.

Dissapointed because it was a close call and as a result they feel they should have been gifted the wicket? No chance.

Whats next? How often do we see the ball wizz pass the outside edge of the bat to the keeper?

In these instances it's understandable if the bowler is dissapointed that it didn't take the edge, however, there is no way the bowler can be dissapointed that he wasn't gifted the wicket since he ALMOST got the batsmen out.

This is a sport of millimeters (mm) and there's no 2 ways about it. The batsmen grounding his bat behind the crease when completing a run could be out by a couple of mm. The batsmen toes may be out of the crease by a couple of mm when he was stumped. The ball may pass the bat by a couple of mm on the way through to the keeper. The ball may miss the stumps by a couple of mm. The bowler may overstep by a couple of mm on a wicket taking delivery.

All these mm decisions can not be given in favour of the bowler. In these circumstances the team who get the rough end of the deal can be dissapointed that they just missed out, however, they cannot be dissapointed that the decision wasn't gifted to them.

There is no seam on the ball tracking ball!! It would have hit the bails with that.
Lol

They were disappointed but no one was complaining. Cursing their luck perhaps but nothing else.

Cricketers and fans need to accept that they will accept the decision of the TV umpire when they review a decision. It's one thing to be disappointed when a catch isn't taken cleanly, and the decision goes against you. But how can anyone have problems with hawk-eye, ultra-edge, and hot spot?

They are disappointed because nothing is going their way.. Wrong selection/batting collapse/Huge lead/defeat at the corner/working hard and when got a chance this happened.

I don't think they think they being robbed..

It cuts both ways. You win some and you loose some. At-least we have the technology to support (or disapprove) our assertion

In this case the ball is missing so the umpire got it right regardless of what you believe.

Nothing wrong with it.

Unlucky to have missed the bails by a mm or so.

The only disappointing decision has been the overturning of the soft signal for bavuma in this match. Everything else has been very fair.

When this whole Pakistan team is disappointing, I don't think anyone will be disappointed on the above incident.

Some bad luck coming Pakistan way as well.

http://www.lankaweb.com/news/items/...should-get-due-recognition-for-the-drs/Senaka Weeraratna the Sri Lankan Lawyer who came out with the suggestion to introduce a Decision Review System (DRS) to minimise umpiring errors in the middle, as far back as 1997, has been fighting for due recognition for his contribution to the game, for over 20 years. However, in spite of many requests and appeals made by him to Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and the International Cricket Conference (ICC), he has not been successful in receiving the kind of acknowledgment that Duckworth and Lewis got for their contribution towards deciding the result on rain-affected Limited-Over games.

According to a recent news item, he has appealed to one of the greatest cricketers produced in this part of the world, Kumar Sangakkara, to help him on this matter. I am sure Kumar, being a 100% Sri Lankan, who knows the benefits that would accrue to his country, would do everything possible as the President of MCC, to help recognise this claim by Senaka.

Senaka has also made representations to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, who has directed the Secretary of the Ministry of Sports (MoS), to take appropriate action, to get recognition for his work.

Cricket is the most popular sport in Sri Lanka. This is the only sport in which Sri Lanka became World champs twice- Winning ODI World Cup in 1996 and T20 World Cup in 2014. The only other sport Sri Lanka produced a world champion is in Billiards, when M.J.M. Lafir became World Champion in December 1973, at World Amateur Billiards Championship held in Mumbai.

In 1982, Sri Lanka was admitted to full membership of the ICC and awarded Test status, thanks to the efforts of then President of the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka (BCCSL), late Gamini Dissanayake. His efforts and how he set about achieving this task was vividly explained in an article written by Sunil Thenabadu, published in the Sunday Times of October 21, 2018.

The inaugural Test was played at the Colombo Oval in February 1982, against England, which Sri Lanka lost by 8 wickets. Sri Lanka toured Pakistan in March 1982 and played 3 Test matches, of which Pakistan won 2 and 1 was drawn. Again in October 1985, Sri Lanka toured Pakistan, with the same results. In the absence of neutral umpiring and/or Senaka’s DRS, there had been quite a few bad decisions by Pakistan umpires that went against Sri Lanka.

Pakistan’s 1st tour of Sri Lanka, after the latter attained Test Status, was in February 1986. This tour was nearly disrupted due to bad umpiring by the Sri Lankan umpires. Imran Khan wrote in his book All Round View” about this tour. He said, The result was an ugly series, where the main bone of contention was the quality of the umpiring.”

Interviewed by Sidharth Monga, Imran said, We all agreed that there was no point in continuing the tour. We drafted a statement to this effect, but General Zia [President of Pakistan] called me up and told me to persuade the boys to complete the tour.’’

At the time of this tour, the late Gamini Dissanayake was the President and the late P.I. Peiris (Cambridge Blue in cricket) was the Vice President of the BCCSL. When the captain and the players were agitating for a cancellation of the tour, the Pakistan manager contacted the officials of their Cricket Board. A senior official was sent to discuss with the Sri Lankan officials to pullout the Pakistan team from the tour, of course, diplomatically.

The Pakistani official, initially, discussed the matter with P.I. Peiris, and thereafter with the President. Nearly 3 hours of discussion did not provide a favourable result. Gamini Dissanayake then called President J.R. Jayewardene (JRJ) and briefed him on the situation and JRJ, himself a lover of cricket, invited them to his Ward Place residence.

JRJ listened to both parties. And then quietly walked to the phone and dialed. When someone answered he said, Your Excellency, these 22 fools in flannels, are trying to disrupt the good relations between our countries. Therefore, I am ordering the Pakistan team to stay and get on with the game.”

JRJ spoke for few more minutes and laughed. Then he turned to the Pakistan Official and said Your President wishes to speak with you”.

He went over to the phone and only said Yes your excellency, Yes,….yes”, then came back and informed President JRJ that they will continue with the tour.

This is a typical example of how bad decisions by the person of authority, who is responsible for presiding over the game, from a neutral point of view, and making on-the-fly decisions that enforce the rules of the sport, including sportsmanship decisions such as ejection, make mistakes or biased decisions, leading to unpleasant situations among the players and sport lovers.

There is very little room now for such bad decisions, thanks to Senaka Weeraratna’s brilliant idea of the players and field umpires appealing to the 3rd umpire when in doubt. As Sri Lankans, we should be proud of his contribution to Cricket, which is like a second religion to a majority of Sri Lankans. Besides, even in other sports, this concept is now practised. For example, in Rugby, which is a very fast body contact game, where the chances of wrong decisions by the on field referee is extremely high, this concept is being practised since 2001. They call it Television Match Official (TMO). Many decisions were changed by the TMO at the Rugby world cup this year and, as a result, the best teams came to the semis and finals, without creating any doubt in the minds of the loyal supporters, spectators and those millions of Rugby fans watching on TV.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has failed so far to make representation to the ICC and obtain recognition for Senaka’s concept, in spite of many appeals made by him. May I therefore, suggest that the SLC and the MoS Secretary work hand in hand with Kumar Sangakkara and help obtain the due recognition for Senaka. This is an honour for Sri Lanka and will be a feather in SLC’s cap!
