[PICTURES] 'Fighting back': Kashmir enclave blocks entry of Indian troops (Reuters)

It is unique as it was almost accepted by all it would be part of Pakistan when partition took place. Its also unique having UN resoluations confirming they have a right to self determination and it's disupted land.

You claim to be a liberal but cant find it within youself to allow people to live how they want?

Kashmir is not part of India, try again.

Again. Stop and think, use some common sense. India has hundreds of thousands of troops in the land. This isn't for singing songs on the streets but to control a population who are against them.

Show me why you believe the majority want to be with India? Any reasoning based on ground realities?

Again, IK has tweeted Kashmiris have the right to self determination but it the resolution calls for the whole of Kashmir to get this right. If Pakistan gives them the vote, do you agree India should do to?

Now I see why there is a confusion. It was never accepted by anyone that it would be part of Pakistan. Hence the reason for Pak to attack Kashmir. I'm in no illusions that Kashmiris are welcoming army. However 90 percent hatred is far fetched. That would be Palestine. You see how it is there. Kashmir is not Palestine. It's somewhere between Palestine and Uighurland. Indians have learned that Israeli way doesn't work and aren't heartless like the Chinese. So the solution would be slow and steady. The first step is from army where they will stop misbehaving with regular people while showing the iron fist to the pelters and separatists. I think they are already doing that. It will get better.

Try reading more carefully. Im saying before partition it was accepted it would be part of Pakistan, not now.

I dont need an innaccurate lesson on world issues.

Im asking you a simple question. You believe the majority of Kashmiris want to live under Indian rule. What evidence or reasoning do you have to show this is true?

Accepted by who? You need a refresher in history. I don't need to give you any evidence. It's already there. For 70 years they've been living under India. Jihadis and pelters are a minority.

Its like flogging a dead horse, never mind that.

Im more interested in this...

What is evidence is there? They are living in their land while your army has guns pointed out at them in hundreds of thousands? This doesn't show they want to be with India but the opposite. Is this really your argument? :))

Guns pointed at who? There are several peaceful zones in J&K and a few conflict ridden districts. The focus is always on the conflict zones where the heavy handedness of army is conspicuous. You can't control millions for 70 years if they all hate you. Now ask yourself this question. If 90 percent have been hating India for 70 years, why does India need curfiew now? It should have been business as usual. That should debunk your conspiracy theories.

Yes the blueprint of hating Pakistan is keeping you all united. Keep at it!

No. Hating has its own limits.

The blue print is based upon improved education, industrialization thus creating more jobs along with putting more infrastructure. The people gradually realize that they are a part of the main stream and thus blending occurs in new generation.

Only in Kashmir you see Kids take the front lines and adults hide behind them. They are not fighting for a right cause here and everyone knows it. They housed terrorists as launch pads against Indian citizens and now playing a victim card?

So you are also advocating beating up the parents because their child went out of the home? According to you beating up a child and parent will help them? A child doesn't know of martyrdom, he/she simply doesn't want soldiers with guns who hate their people around them.

If he is a juvenile, he will be dealt with according to the juvenile laws.

How did you come to a conclusion that I support suppression of people. People can protest for anything, but that don't mean they are going to be successful in their demand. No country is going to sit and watch people throwing rocks, rioting and destroying public infrastructure. People in subcontinent are know for this kind of behavior, they don't believe in respecting or maintaining what is not theirs.

Pakistan want Kashmir to burn and more people getting killed and rioters looting so Kashmir will gain international attention like Hong Kong is receiving now. Unfortunately for them it is not happening due to the curfew.
Kashmir is receiving more international attention than at any point since 1998

Indians are a entitled bunch. Unless this happens to them they will never see the light.

Curfew isn't infinite. You really do believe people are surviving for 15 days without foods and water?

In a curfew situation, for a brief period of time in each day, IPC 144 is generally applied which means one is allowed to go out and do his basic needs except there won't be a gathering of more than 4-5 people. Shops are also opened for a brief period of time so that people can buy their daily requirements.

The supply chain goes under strict observation of the army.

The evidence is out there. People aren't being allowed out without facing an immediate arrest.

Bro. You really need to stop embarrassing yourself. Honestly, read history. This is not the case.

Princely states were free to make their own decisions regardless of whether they had a muslim or a hindu majority. The decision was left to the ruler of the princely state. Kashmir was one of the princely states.

I would suggest you start off by reading a bit of history before making absurd comments like this.

Here's a few articles you can read to understand the Kashmir issue better

I would highly suggest reading up on things first before commenting because it makes you look rather stupid when you're commenting on such a basic thing and get it completely wrong.

Also, I would suggest that after you've read up on Kashmir and the origin of the issue there you should also read about Junagadh and Hyderabad. It will give you an interesting perspective on the entire issue.

Kashmiris defy curbs, clash with Indian forces

SRINAGAR: Occupation forces used tear gas against stone-throwing residents in India-held Kashmir’s main city of Srinagar on Friday, after a third straight week of protests in the restive Soura district despite the imposition of tight restrictions.

Police tried to enter Soura, which has emerged as a centre of the protests, as hundreds of locals staged a protest march against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to withdraw autonomy for the disputed territory of Kashmir on Aug. 5.

Posters appeared overnight this week in Srinagar, the Muslim-majority region’s main city, calling for a march to the office of the UN Military Observer Group for India and Pakistan (Unmogip), to protest against India’s decision.

This was the first such call by Kashmiri leadership. India’s move was accompanied by travel and communication restrictions in held Kashmir that are still largely in place, although some landlines were restored last week.

In a narrow lane of Soura, blocked like many others with rocks and sheets of metal, residents hurled stones at the paramilitary police to stop them from moving into an area around the local mosque, Jinab Sahib, which had earlier been packed for Friday prayers.

The police responded with several rounds of tear gas and chilli grenades but were beaten back by dozens of stone-pelting men. Some men suffered pellet injuries.

The locals said the occupation forces had been repeatedly trying to move into Soura, often using tear gas and pellets.

“We are neither safe at home, nor outside,” said Rouf, who declined to give his full name. He had rubbed salt into his face to counteract the effects of tear gas.

The afternoon had begun peacefully, with men and women streaming into Jinab Sahib Mosque for prayers. A cleric then raised a call for “Azadi” several times, and declared Kashmir’s allegiance to Pakistan.

“Long live Pakistan,” the cleric said, as worshippers roared back in approval.

US President Donald Trump plans to discuss Kashmir when he meets Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of a G7 meeting in France this weekend, a senior US administration official said on Thursday.

Mr Trump, who has offered to mediate between India and Pakistan, will press Mr Modi on how he plans to calm regional tensions after the withdrawal of Kashmir’s autonomy, and stress the need for dialogue, the official said.

At least 152 people have been hurt by teargas and pellets since Indian forces launched their crackdown, data from the Himalayan region’s two main hospitals shows.

Large swathes of Srinagar remain deserted with shops shut except for some provision stores with shutters half-down. Police vans patrolled some areas announcing a curfew and asking people to stay indoors.

On the Dal Lake, long rows of houseboats, normally packed with tourists at this time of year, floated closed and empty, as police patrolled its mirror-calm waters in boats.

Lol. No. Go read up. Find any neutral source.

All princely states including Kashmir had the right to join India,Pakistan or stay independent. Only condition was that the country they join must have a border with it.

Youre rambling on when I'm simply pointing out the the two nation theory was based on the principle of majority muslims states not being part of India. So they can practice their faith without a minority religion as their government. Kashmir was and is a majority Muslim state. The Non-Muslim ruler going with India would be like a Muslim ruler going with Pakistan in an area with 90% Hindus at partition. It was a dumb move with has caused suffering and conflict to this day. Stop making a fool out of yourself trying to be some sort of great historian.

the rulers then were given the rights to select any of the options, either to remain free or join India or join Pakistan. ....it is you who is defining new meanings to that rule to suit your own selfish moitve

This is exactly what happened though which is why I asked you to read up about Hyderabad and Junagadh. You can ignore the actual history and make up your own stories but that does not change the facts. Kashmir was a princely state with the authority to make their own decision regarding accession.

The Two Nation theory by the way was a Hindu nationalist idea to begin with and was later adopted by Jinnah and the whole concept is absurd considering the fact that not even Muslims can co-exist together as one nation.

The only person making a fool of himself is you who refuses to accept the facts and is harping on about their own made up story and their own version of history which is not only absurd but also shows your lack of knowledge on the whole issue.

Two nation theory didnot apply to princely states.

Man, you're slow. I know princely states had the choice to make their own decisions. They all choose but when this theory was being discussed majority Muslim states were expected to join with Pakistan. Use your brain , wy would a majority 90%+ Muslim state want to live under Hindu rule?

Anyone remember Hyderabad and Junagarh? They had a hindu majority and muslim rulers. Muslim rulers wanted to sign the Instrument of accession with Pakistan but India captured those rulers and annexed the two princely states while saying that they had a hindu majority so they should be included in India. But for Kashmir, India had the different policy.
But, my fellow Pakistanis and Indians please stop fighting with each other and press your governments to make sure that no innocent human die in Kashmir. Human lives should be more important then state politics

because the prince made the decision to do so. Similar to Hyderabad and Junagadh. Same scenario, just the other way around.

Those are not majority Muslim states which is why India took them and rightly so according to the principle of two nation theory . The same for Kashmir & yes just the other way round .

Inside the Resistance Fighting India's Occupation of Kashmir

SRINAGAR, KASHMIR — Every night by 6 p.m., Indian security forces lock down the streets of Kashmir’s capital city. For almost a month, people here have been without internet or cell phone service, and have been banned from gathering in public.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling party suspended the autonomy of the states of Jammu and Kashmir on Aug. 5, and has sent an additional 35,000 troops to quell the resistance in this picturesque Himalayan valley.

But one neighborhood in Srinagar is resisting the occupation. Young men from his neighborhood have dug up trenches, take turns guarding barricades blocking their streets, and throw stones at security forces when they try to force their way in at all hours of the night.

“We stay up all night, our boys stand up to them. There are at least 300-400 people here.” Mohammed, a protester in Soura, an enclave of Kashmir’s capital, told VICE News.

“They use a lot of shotgun pellets, tear gas, and power shells, but by the grace of god they haven’t succeeded.” he said. “As long as there are men living here, we won’t let them in.”

Kashmir used to be India’s only Muslim-majority state. Now, it will become two federally administered territories, giving the central government direct control over an area that’s been the focal point of three wars with Pakistan, its nuclear-armed neighbor, and a 30-year-long separatist insurgency.

More than 150 people have been injured in clashes with the police since the lockdown began.

Hassan, who is also from Soura, was on the frontlines of one of the first protests when police shot him with a pellet shotgun.

“The doctor says that it was a full cartridge, and the pellets penetrated inside my body.” Hassan told VICE News. “Some people lost their eyes. They also captured five or six boys and we have no news about them to this day.”

While many have been arrested during protests, others have been taken from their homes in the night. Security forces have detained thousands, and reports suggest some have been tortured, though officials have denied these claims.

“The police raids several places at night. Sabotaging takes place,” Hayat Ahmed Bhat, a community organizer in Soura told VICE News. “They take small children, God knows where they take them, and they don’t release them. We can’t even comprehend what's going on in Jammu and Kashmir right now.”

Bhat spent nearly two years in jail in “preventive detention” and was released before the lockdown began. He immediately started organizing from the local mosque. The government spies on his rallies with drones as they’ve been unable to shut them down.

Bhat continues to organize despite his concerns for his family. He worries he will be arrested again if his neighborhood is overrun by the army.

“God willing we will completely resist this campaign.” Bhat said. “We have decided that until Article 370 is brought back, and Jammu and Kashmir get its rights…. And all the local captives are released, no Kashmiri, will sit here peacefully.”
