George Bailey has been batting with a closed-off stance recently, which is

something he said he has come up with during his off season . He said he’s been

scoring runs with it lately, so for the time being, he will continue with this

technique.

I think it was because his initial trigger movement had him moving his backfoot too far across which made him too front on.

I guess this is his way of countering it as his backfoot trigger at the delivery ends him in a regular position from this stance rather than making him too front on.

He must be practicing this a lot, as it's not really smth you can change overnight.

There has been a bit of a funky change which came about over a number of years,” Bailey told Channel Nine on Sunday.

“It started off with me just wanting to get into a really strong position where I could hit as many sixes as I could. It snuck into my one-day cricket and it got to the point where I trusted it so much, I thought I’d have a crack at it in red ball cricket where the ball swings and seams a bit more.”

It just works,” he said.I just seem to hit the ball much cleaner. I still nick the ball and kick the ball every now and then, but at the moment I’m scoring more runs before I make that mistake.”I don’t like looking at it if I’m being honest,” he said.I know it’s not pretty. I much prefer to stand there like David Warner and look so composed.

It stops my front foot from locking off and pushing too far across my body, which sounds a bit counter intuitive.

But it looks really bad when the bowler is at the top of his mark, but I think once the bowler is about to release the ball, I think it must be in a bit of a better position“I don’t think you could find a coach in the world who could come up with that,” he said.

The onus is on me. It was borne out of frustration getting out the same way in four-day cricket repeatedly.

It’s the form of cricket I love most and it’s the most challenging. It’s my career and I’ll live and die by the sword. I want to bat the way I want to bat. I didn’t get much support from any coaches when I first started doing it.”

lol what this was done by any subcontinent player he would have been buried alive

Subcontinent coaches would've buried him first. They are too thick headed and one dimensional to let players experiment and play the way they are comfortable.

Steve Smith would've disappeared into nothing in our domestic circuit.

yeah exactly i feel for our savior of the test team Fawad alam because his so called "technique" is not perfect

The subcontinent did produce an MS Dhoni though. You can't say the don't allow experimentation at all. Of course, when you have players like Virat Kohli coming out of the system playing pretty much traditional cricketing shots , you have a working formula to follow.

Sorry not subcontinental, I meant to say Pakistani.

Maybe Fawad Alam is the only exception, but he has limitations outside his stance that he didn't really do much at the intl scene in ODIs.

Dhoni is also a wicket keeper.

Keepers and Allrounders get far more latitude.

Who cares? As long as he gets runs, that's what matters. Graeme Smith had a weird technique but he scored a ton.of runs.

I don't know why everyone's talking about this now, he's had this stance for ages.

A slight touch of Michael Slater in that closed stance, although of course Slater's wasn't anywhere near as pronounced. Slater was always jumping around the crease due to his prodigious back foot movement which allowed him to open up his stance just before the bowler entered his follow-through at the other end. Got him into trouble when his form was scratchy and his feet would got tangled. There was method in his madness though as it invariably worked for him at the highest level.

I reckon Bailey might be selected for the test tour to India, going by Lehmann's comments about selecting touring sides with conditions in mind for once.
