[PICTURES] ICC Pitch Consultant Andy Atkinson visits Pakistan [Post #128]

Misbah did well at home. He failed against SA and AUS but he did do decent in England and NZ.
We drew 2-2 to England and in 2 series vs NZ - we won 1-0 in 2011 and in 2016, we lost the first test under Misbah (2nd test, Azhar was captain)

At home he had the luxury of chucking cheats like Ajmal and Hafeez, as well as an ATG batsman of spin in Younis Khan. I don't rate Sarfraz at all but even if he had these players he would have achieved very similar results.

If you think Misbah as Head Coach & Selector is going to turn things around in the UAE, then I'm sorry to say you're going to be left very disappointed because he doesn't have these assets to bank on anymore.

In England he batted well at Lords, but one shouldn't forget his ton did come against an England side without Anderson and Stokes in the bowling attack.

As for his captaincy I was not impressed for the following 2 reasons:

1. In the Edgbaston test (3rd of the series), Pakistan had a lead in the region of 130-140 runs after both sides had completed their first innings. When Pakistan came out to bowl, Misbah resorted to ultra defensive fields after ten overs and allowed England to capitalise on that. From a winning position, Pakistan lost the test after bottling it on the last day. Chief culprit was Misbah for letting England even have a sniff in that contest!

2. He picked close friend of his, Iftikhar Ahmed in the last test, who is nothing but a bum as a cricketer. Luckily for him and Pakistan, Younis Khan's one man army effort of 218 runs in the second innings was suffice to offset his shortcomings.

That NZ team in 2011 was a very mediocre team compared to the one in recent years, so no wonder in the real contest he failed so miserably once again.

Sindh game was horrific with only 14 wickets falling.

Very slow and dull cricket.

The pros are that our batsmen get to spend time in the middle and score big.

But there needs to be more variety.

Even on flat decks, the ball needs to spin and offer something on the last day.

Asad Shafiq bowled 37 overs which was not a positive thing to see.

He can't bat anymore, maybe try something new :yk

These guys couldn't produce balanced pitches if their lives depended on it.

Farmers masquerading as "curators".

It will take time for pitches to get to the high standard we expect. But these dead wickets atleast are exposing these fat, useless trundlers that were a menace on the soft, unprepared wickets of previous seasons.

We can't say this is a bad pitch on day 1. If it's still flat by the fourth day, then we can complain.

People need to stop whining.

This is good.

Its september and the weathet is very hot. These pitches will help the batsmen by batting long and learn how to stay on the wicket. If umar akmal scores less than a 100 on such a wicket than he aint good enough.

2. The spinners need to get exposed. Pakistans x factor has always been the spinners, and the facr zafar gohar picks nothing here shows his own quality.

3. Bowlers form is being exposed. If junaid khan only bowls 10 overs here that shows how pathetic his fitness is.

4. It will get cold in a month and thats when there will be shift in performance.

5. Abbas used to take wickets on such wickets in uae.

6. As someone said. Thank god no more saad altaf like bowlers taking wickets

Agreed!

Completely dead pitches and awful trundling and spin bowling. No wonder everyone is scoring tons.

Imagine the Indian Test lineup batting on these pitches against these mediocre bowlers. They will probably end up scoring 1,000+ if they bat first.

Hopefully the colder season will test the batsmen more.

Oops. Close the door on your way out... :shhh

There is no space for trundlers in international cricket. No more green tops for the trundlers to pick up easy wickets

He is Misbah fan ,we can understand that. Will like a 37 years old making it into pakistan side.

Funny thing is that Zafar Gohar's only call up for tests came under Misbah, Misbah also selected him as part of Islamabad United. Not everything is related to Misbah. I actually see Zafar Gohar's chances of being selected increasing now that he's the selector. It is already evident as I'm pretty sure Zafar was present at the camp a couple of weeks ago while previous selectors seemed to not even know he existed.

Are you sure he was in the camp?

Yes, absolutely.

Funny thing is Major wrote his post yesterday when Zafar's side were batting!

im glad that i was proven wrong, and i hope it happens again.

If he keeps performing well that he should be selected in the side

Hard to take you seriously when you criticise his bowling performance in a game he hadn't even bowled in yet...

you do know that misbah hardly played him. you do know that misbah used to play his rubbish friend imran khalid.

We know In UAE misbah went with only one spinners not having confidence in youngsters, many careers are going to be ruined kn next two years.

you do know that misbah hardly played him. you do know that misbah used to play his rubbish friend imran khalid.

imran khalid was played as an economical bowler, and he was a success. Technically we won the first one because of him

bro i get it you like that kid.

but at the end of the day, a oldie like Zulfi is picking more wickets than this kid, even though its a grade 2 match.

This guy played in the first game and went for 100 for a single wicket. If he is not gonna perform he will get critisized.

You just dont wana hear critisicism agianst him, than what could i do

You literally criticised Zafar for not taking any wickets when his side had been batting all day. .:))

Can you see the issue with that? Can you see why people might think you are more interested in pushing your agenda than actually bothering to watch the match?

The best part is when he actually bowled he was the best bowler (spinner) on show and produced a match winning performance in both innings.

Show yourself out.

Don't chance the fact misbah didn't give zafar a chance. Kept of selecting his friends. So what the excuse for not selecting him for international. Because zulfi 40 odd average is outstanding.

oh bhaii, he picked only 1 wicket in the first first class game he played and was smashed for 100 runs, for which i critisized him.

again you need to stop thinking that critisizing a player means i have an agenda agianst him.

If he performs bad he should be critsized and if he performs well he should be priased.

Misbah on pitches:

"I think we were missing this thing, in the past we used to have batting pitches in domestic cricket and we would have good batsmen as a result, good spinners and strong fast-bowlers also. If pitches are such that a non-regular bowler can just come and bowl at a good length and get 5 wickets, spinners don't get the ball and in 30 overs teams are out - then neither do batsmen learn the art of batting, spinners don't get to bowl and they don't play spinners. You don't even need pace then because with pace, the ball will come onto the bat. So the most important thing with batting pitches is that spinners will develop and batsmen will learn to play long innings, no doubt on batting pitches but they will learn how to construct innings. And the most important thing: Fast-bowlers, reverse swing, bouncers, without pace they will know that they can't survive so they will have to put effort into it. All these things will also develop fitness, when you need to play tough cricket for long days. The same happens in Test cricket, teams are rarely out in one session. To win a Test match often, you need to bowl for a day or more. So players will be ready for 5 day cricket. No doubt, however the pitches are, I am happy at least that there is preparation underway. We will become mentally and physically strong and ready for tough cricket"

Wasim Khan on commentary today "Andy Atkinson of the ICC is coming next week and will visit our main grounds and look at the pitches".

He's still gonna select Rahat over Naseem.

May be it is for sl test series .hopefully we will see result oriented pitches

6 hundreds in the Sindh vs Balochistan match at National Stadium.
7 hundreds in the Central Punjab vs Southern Punjab match at State Bank Ground.

Ridiculous...

Good to see high scores!

This will teach the bowlers to utilise the new ball to its fullest and bring back the art of reverse swing.

Medium pace bowlers were having it their way for the past few years, but now they will have to use skills to get wickets and only the best will flourish.

Flat pitches are good to some extent but it’s very depressing seeing the likes of Salman Butt cracking tons.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to train the pitch curators across the country by bringing foreign curators to Pakistan and give them lectures.

According to sources, after the heavy defeats in Australia and South Africa, PCB has taken this decision to prevent the difficulties faced by national players when they visit abroad.

Next month, foreign curators will conduct training courses for Pakistani curators and caretakers of all Test center pitches will be informed about the preparation of international standard pitches.

PCB will review the pitches of Karachi, Rawalpindi, Multan and Faisalabad stadium. Pitches soil, base, and other issues will also be reviewed.

Board has finalized the matters with expert curators from England, South Africa, and Australia. Foreign curators will inform local curators about producing different quality pitches. English curator Andy Anchiston will give lectures.

It must be noted that Pakistan men’s team lost badly in the Test series against South Africa and Australia this year.

Good initiative, better could have been to appoint a qualified foreigner as “national curator” at PCB. Keeping incompetent people in charge, only lectures might not work - some people need to be afraid of their job!!!!! The Karachi Test is starting in two days time - I still haven’t overcome from the nightmares of last Test played there...... after PCB’s roar of “... blowing SRL with pace and bounce on a lively wicket”.

Is it really possible to produce an australian or english wicket in asia???

No lectures will help these incompetent farmers masquerading as groundsmen. They've been there for years.

They all need sacking.

It does beg the question whether these lectures will be of any good or not. How many curators and groundsmen are educated and will be able to communicate with the foreigners?

Also these groundsmen can be very proud and stubborn. Will they be willing to learn?

Lastly, how complicated is this process of making pitches? I would guess it's quite a difficult job and involves quite a bit of technical knowledge. Soil is regarded as a tough subject in civil engineering and to be able to create the pitch you want I would reckon the curator needs some proper technical knowledge of the subject. Can that be covered in some lectures?

He says it is all about clay content, you can't create bouncy pitches if the clay content % isn't much. Bringing soil from Australia won't work as it was tried in UAE and it failed. He says that there are places where clay content is high in pakistan, PCB got to search for such places and stage FC matches there. He also talks about Kookabra are not ideal balls on low and slow pitches because batsman with no backfoot game will love it

I don't know how true it is MMHS

Pakistan needs help for pitch preparation for international games - pronto!

ICC Pitch Consultant Andy Atkinson visited the National Stadium Karachi to assess the pitches at the venue. Andy will also supervise a workshop with the NSK groundstaff.

We need supportive pitches just like in England. I guess we cannot have like for like due to different weather conditions but still plenty of room for improvement.

Excellent, all ideal preparations for possible full scale international cricket returning to pakistan

I would love to see more pitches like the ones in South Africa. Thrilling tracks that are supportive for batting and bowling!

Staffers pitched can be quite flat actually and often offer nothing for spinners. Pakistan and England have just made those pitches look like minefields.

I'd say we need more pitches like New Zealand, although we wont have the atmospheric conditions. The recent karachi pitch was exceptional.

Andy Atkinson, the ICC Pitch Consultant, visited Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium today for assessment of the pitches.

GSL pitch for the 1st T20I - a bit too placid? Should have been for Pakistan's advantage

These groundsmen should be shot. No amount of Andy Atkinson's seminars will help. How many more years of substandard pitches must we take ?

You cannot turn cow herders into professional groundsmen who can prepare pitches for international cricket.

This was a typical Dubai grinder pitch.

Too slow for LOIs.

Another example of how PCB wastes money and looks like a laughing stock. They should've arranged a gardener instead of Atkinson, to grow some grass that could improve the bounce. Its really hilarious to arrange visit from Britain and host a guest consultant, to produce such a poor belowpar wicket where bounce fails to lift not more than 1 feet. Batsmen can't hit while bowlers can't move.

Wasim Khan is destroying our cricket while helping British nationals like himself get easy money just to visit Pak and photo ops with media.

I think, there is a misconception about wickets is that - no grass means it's batting paradise. It's actually not - often opposite. Grass less dead wickets on a soft base are the worst type of wickets for cricket - ball doesn't come on to bat, neither bounces and it doesn't break for spinners either, even if it breaks, it's often slow, low turn. Only type of bowling works here is reverse swing with old ball and nothing for batsmen, except that you can survive long with dead bat.

Regarding your question, I'll write something when free - need to do some homework for that.

Andy Atkinson will visit Pakistan again for the next 6 months. His first visit was short and was just an assessment of pitches. When he comes back from South Africa bc of the U19 tournament, he will give suggestions on how to improve the pitches

Can anyone confirm if this news is true.

Your point is kinda ridiculous.
He is hired as a consultant he visited the Gaddafi weeks earlier, he must've seen the pitch himself conveyed input to the local curators.

This is an international bilateral series to make case for Pakistan as a better host than UAE, and the substandard pitch was worse than Abu Dhabi, not even fit for ODI. It discouraged strokeplay for batsmen and did'nt help the bowlers either senile dead wicket. Damaged the purpose of the tournament

TV Comms talking about lack of bounce on Pakistan pitches - seems PCB need to do more work on this.

Pakistani pitches since the comeback of cricket have been really good.

Great work by the curators.

Great work by curators this pitch today was the best pace and bounce but overall pitches have been good

Ramiz Raja rated this pindi pitch best of this PSL. He tweeted:

Today we had the best pitch of this years HBL PSL. It had bounce and zip but also allowed for shot making. Bowlers with pace and spinners with guile had a great surface to work their skills. Man of the match award winner: the 22 yards.
