Joe Root continues to prove why is one of the best batsmen in the world at the moment as he joined a couple of the current 'Fab 4' members in an elite list on Tuesday (June 29). The star England batsman surpassed former India captain Sourav Ganguly to become the fourth fastest batsman to amass 6,000 ODI runs after the likes of Virat Kohli and Kane Williamson.

All three of Kohli, Williamson, and Root are considered a part of the current Fab 4 in world cricket. While Kohli is the second-fastest to have achieved the feat in 136 innings, Williamson did it in 139 innings. Former South Africa batsman Hashim Amla holds the record for being the fastest to 6,000 ODI runs having achieved the feat in only 123 innings.

Root moved past Ganguly, who had achieved the feat in 147 innings for India as he reached the milestone of 6,000 ODI runs in just 141 innings. The England right-hander reached the milestone while batting during the first ODI between England and Sri Lanka at the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street on Tuesday.

Root played a match-winning knock of unbeaten 79 runs to help England thrash Sri Lanka by five wickets in the first ODI and go 1-0 up in the three-match series. Continuing their stellar run from the T20I series, England comfortably beat a hapless Sri Lankan side, who had three players suspended due to a bio-bubble breach in the country.

Batting first, Sri Lanka were off to a disastrous start losing two wickets inside 24 runs before Kusal Perera steadied the ship for the visitors. Perera slammed a brilliant 73 and combined with Wanindu Hasaranga to help his side post 185 runs on the board in 42.3 overs. Chris Woakes and David Willey picked up seven wickets between them to bundle out the visitors cheaply.

In reply, Root's unbeaten 79 and Jonny Bairstow's cracking 21-ball 43 helped England chase down the target with 15.1 overs to spare and take a 1-0 lead in the series.

Root the ODI batsman is still new to me!

Root's skills and abilities would have made him a cult superstar in ODI's, even 20 years ago.

The game has moved on from 85 S/R batsman now.

He is a great ODI batsman and very crucial for the England lineup. He is the glue that keeps everything together and allows the others to play freely.

My post was actually more enjoyable, I stated "the mack is back, baby!" hahaa but still, good and important thread. Root's ability to bat time and score at a sr of 80-90 is key to holding the middle of the innings together, allowing England's big hitters to play their natural style. When Root is not around, England look an uneven ODI team. They would likely have lost last night's game with everyone playing one paced cricket.

In ODIs:-

Kohli = Babar > AB> Rohit > Root> Kane > Smith

He is the second most consistent batter in ODIs in the world after Kohli. And he is the only one who looks fluent and nimble from the ball 1. He must have one of the lowest dot ball percentages in the world.

Defending champions England's aggressive batsman Joe Root shocked everyone ahead of the 2023 World Cup by declaring that his team did not deserve to lift the 2019 trophy.

According to foreign media reports, English batsman Joe Root spoke to The Telegraph about the 2019 World Cup final match in which England became world champions for the first time, but its victory was also the biggest in the history of the World Cup. Controversial victory was declared.

The final match between England and New Zealand took a very thrilling and exciting turn but suddenly England lost and won and New Zealand lost and won.

New Zealand won the toss and scored 241 runs in 50 overs after Henry Nicholls' brilliant half-century. England also could not go beyond this total till the allotted over.

Then, for the first time, the ODI World Cup final went to a Super Over, but this Super Over was also inconclusive, after which the ICC took a decision that caused celebration in England and mourning in New Zealand sports circles.

The ICC declared England on the brink of failure as the winner for setting more boundaries in the match, which made the International Cricket Council laugh not only at the cricket level but also at the diplomatic level.

Speaking about the most controversial final in World Cup history, Joe Root admitted that the result of the 2019 ODI World Cup final against New Zealand at Lord's surprised even him given the position he was in. Accordingly, they were definitely not entitled to lift the trophy.

It was a victory that when you sit back and think about it in isolation, something seems wrong, he said. We had no right to win it like this, but a victory is a victory, and a little bit of love goes with it.

Joe Root also lamented that he didn't have time to fully celebrate after winning the World Cup because the Ashes series was scheduled immediately after the mega event, which meant that we never got to see the glory of our victory. Not even a single day was given to celebrate and enjoy the victory organized and celebrated together as a team.

1696923681461.pngJoe Root, the former England captain, showcased his batting prowess in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 match against Bangladesh. He scored his 54th half-century, marking a return to form. He is still on the crease ,along with Dawid Malan, going strong. He is just behind Eoin Morgan for most 50's in Odi's for England.

It is quite interesting how he scores more than 50% of his runs behind square. It shows how much Root plays the scoop, reverse, and toys with the bowlers. A true master he is

Root is always class. Can't believe people were comparing rizzu to him, look at root dominating bangaldesh 🫨

The perfect foil for england's line up
His anchor role allows the others to go beserk, but he can still up the rate if needed with his clever reverse laps and sweeps. Fantastic player

He is certainly one of the best batsmen of this era. His ODI average of over 49 and test average is over 50 so no one should have any doubt about this batting class.

He has had a disastrous World Cup and this has certainly dented his legacy as a white ball cricketer.

He has been uprooted

He’s been playing like a village cricketer like a little boy still trying to get approval and validation. He’s still begging to get franchise offers. Should have taken a cue from Malan. You’re a touch player, just play regular cricket.

He’s been nutmegged like an amateur twice in this World Cup.

This is the case with all England cricketers. Stokes, Bairstow, Moeen, Rashid, Buttler, all are having a disastrous World Cup.

Joe Root Father reaction :D

Bazball has really messed with his batting.

But he is also struggling with seam/swing movement and spin

He is one of the best batsmen to ever play the game. I don’t think anyone can be stupid enough to challenge this assertion.

Time for more humble pie. What a rubbish performance from the supposed England great.

He should have been in his prime and has performed far worse than an injured Williamson and a shambolic Babar.

Mentally weak cricketer who never contributed as much to English cricket as he should have. The likes of Strauss, Cook, Peterson were lower class batsmen who did far more for England.

He's at his best playing under a great captain like Stokes and given the freedom to just bat.

England have been back to their normal now, the minnows as they say. A team that failed to qualify in semis since 1992 except for once(2019).

He is England’s greatest batsman and he is also always available for England.

Imam ul Haq is always available for Pakistan despite all the hate he gets. Him and Joe Root should be lauded for always being available.

I would love to have some mentally weak characters like Stokes in the team who have won world cups and matches in ATG fashion.

Root has been so embarrassed this World Cup. And although he batted well in the last World Cup, he completely bottled it and played one of the worst innings of the tournament in the final. 7 of 30! He is lucky Stokes saved him. No wonder the IPL teams won't go near him. He is a soft cricketer who will be remembered for being an atrocious captain that couldn't win a test match by the end.

He is a good batsman overall though and should come back from this but he needs stronger players around him and the longer Stokes is his captain the better he will do.

This guy plays faster in Tests :) May be to counter bazball start with one day field set. That is how Sehwag was tamed in SA. They had deep third man straight away for that slash.

Looks lost. For such a brilliant test batsman, he is a very poor ODI batsman who isn't himself, and tries to play a game he isn't comfortable with

Why even put Moeen's name alongside those other players?

Unlike the others, no one is actually surprised Mooen had a disastrous WC.

They are too far into that Morgan ball style of batting which doesn't work well now (2021 onwards) with kookaburra introducing white balls that have bigger seams and which stay in shape , swing for longer periods and provide finger spinners with grip.

Other teams have found it easier to adapt because they never really abandoned the traditional ODI template

ATG test batsman and good ODI batsman.

As an LOI player, he was overshadowed by several aggressive players from his team only like Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes and Johnny Bairstow. Having said that, those three aren't ATG level cricketers either in ODIs.

Joe Root fighting alone for England at the moment against Afghanistan in ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Scored a half-century against them. Currently at 52*(52)

Root loves Pakistan grounds. It is like his home ground. He is still not batting with real aggression. Just tapping the ball for singles mostly.

Joe Root is an amazing batsman, a great in Tests and very good in ODIs. These days his technique in ODIs is better than in Tests where he has to toe the Bazball crap way.
These pathetic roads in Pakistan make the batter’s job so much easier. Rohit and Kohli have definitely missed out on piling up runs in these conditions.
