Lionel Messi tells Barcelona he wants to leave the club

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Lionel Messi has told Barcelona he wants to leave the club after nearly two decades with the Spanish giants.

The club confirmed to The Associated Press on Tuesday that the Argentina great sent a document expressing his desire to leave.

The announcement comes 11 days after Barcelona’s humiliating 8-2 loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals, one of the worst defeats in the player’s career and in the club’s history.

The defeat capped a difficult season for Barcelona — the first without a title since 2007-08 — and ignited one of its worst crises ever.

Messi has won a record six Ballon d’Or awards during his time at Barcelona as the top player in the world, and has helped the club win 10 Spanish league titles and four Champions League crowns.

I'm a huge Barca fan and I accept this decision by Messi.

Barto has systematically destroyed the club and disrespected Leo.

It is a toxic club now and even a guy as loyal as Messi can't stand it anymore.

Best of luck wherever you go Leo I hope you continue to light up the football world for years to come.

I'm ok with Messi leaving Barcelona even though I'm a fan of both.

I hope he joins Man City.

Although, him joining PSG or Juventus would be insane.

Never ever imagined this day would come.

Too late. Should have left 3-4 seasons ago. He is now what, 34?

How has Messi been disrespected? More like when the going got tough, he wants out (I am s big Messi fan btw).

I never thought he would leave. Can't believe this. Seems this time it is real and there is talk he wants to be let go for a free as there is some clause allowing him out of the final year of his contract .

What a mess of a situation Barcelona are in.

Gonna be weird to watch him play for a different club, in a different jersey.

How about CR7 and Messi both at Juventus? :smith

Highly doubt this unless Juve pull millions out of a hat.

Inter is the richest club in Serie A now.

I think Messi would love to play for Pep again, his managment suits his style. However he might hold back because it's the Premier league, where he will be physically handled more than ever before. Not to suggest Messi wont be a success, he will in any league.

I believe he had a meeting with Koeman, who informed him no player will be given any special preferences. However the Barca president has called an emergency meeting , meaning Koeman could be told to pipe down and Messi stays. We will see.

Yeah let’s see what happens. However if Messi leaves, I’m seeing him go to Man City for the money and Guardiola :))

I hope he comes to the Premier League, the last appearance was when Andy Robertson bullied him at Anfield in the GOAT CL matches.

You never really know how good a player is until you see him live on the pitch weaving his magic.

Just read Luis Suaraz will also leave on a free.

Imagine Barca not qualifing for the Champions League next season. :))

This reminds me of an article I read once, describing the days immediately after Man City were acquired by their current owners, and were suddenly flush with money. The management were speaking with the owners, and there was a lot of noise and static on the phone line. They misinterpreted the remark “it’s getting messy” for “Its about getting Messi,” and promptly fired off a bid to Barcelona... and never heard back. If he ends up at Man City now, this anecdote is sure to be brought up again.

Would be great for us Real Madrid fans. Another title for us with our mediocre squad without any effort.

But I still believe that Messi is just playing a game and might be able to get rid of Bartomeu by blackmailing Barcelona. In the end both Barca and Messi might be the winner here.

Poll has been added. Please vote on which club you think is his most likely next destination. Seems at the moment like a reuniting with Guardiola is very possible:

--------------------------------------

Odds on Messi's next club:

Man City - 6/4

Inter Milan - 3/1

PSG - 3/1

Juventus - 4/1

Man Utd - 13/2

Any MLS Club - 12/1

Liverpool - 14/1

Leeds - 20/1

Any Argentinian Club - 25/1

Bayern Munich - 35/1

Chelsea - 50/1

Lazio - 100/1

Newcastle - 100/1

Napoli - 125/1

Real Madrid - 150/1

Ah man the GOAT CL match: “Corner taken quickly, Origi!!” :amir2

I think Messi would do okay in the PL. I don’t expect him to set the world on fire but he will do decent...

Suarez has been linked to Ajax. Interesting times ahead for Barca.

Same situation as CR7 with RM, feels disrespected and has to leave, will most likely go to City now and end his career with pep.

It will be a good signing for Ajax , a nice return for him to his previous club.

I love the stadium at Ajax, at one time it was the best in the world(in terms of modern football stadiums).

He would smash the Dutch league. I wouldn't mind him returing to Liverpool either but doubt Klopp wants to sign anyone over 33.

An outside shot maybe Messi going to the MLS, maybe to Beckhams Miami. It would be a wise move by Becks but not sure if Messi wants such a dip in class ending his career there.

PSG seems the likely destination his old pal Neymar is also there and they have deep pockets to satisfy Messi

Yeah indeed, Johan Cruyff Arena is the best stadium in the Netherlands. Suarez did say once in an interview that he’d like to come back to Ajax one day. Would be a treat for Eredivisie fans to watch him play.

Messi to MLS? That’s a big downgrade as you said.

Very few clubs that can afford that wage even more so with the pandemic. I wouldn't be surprised to see a swap deal with PSG for Neymar.

He should have left three seasons ago.

Now age is not on his side but I will still like to see him move to an English club just to shut up those 'shokhay' PL fans.

Legendary Barcelona forward Lionel Messi has asked to leave this summer.

The Argentina international, 33, sent a fax to the club on Tuesday saying he wishes to exercise a clause in his contract, allowing him to leave for free with immediate effect.

Barca were beaten 8-2 by Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals on 16 August.

The six-time Ballon d'Or winner made his debut for Barca in 2004 and has won the Champions League four times.

Barcelona, though, believe the clause has now expired and Messi is contracted to the club until 2021 with a 700m euro buy-out clause.

The board will meet soon and some consider the only thing that could placate Messi is the resignation of the president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, and early elections. But Messi seems determined to leave the club no matter what.

Where could Messi go next?
'Has he thought of trying out baseball?' - Messi prompts social media meltdown
After the news broke, Barca fans gathered outside the Nou Camp to protest against the board and in support of the club's record goalscorer.

A legal battle is now set to follow between the club and the player. Messi had a clause in his contract which allowed him to leave for free, if he informed the club of his desire before 10 June.

That date has now passed so Barca believe the clause has expired, but Messi and his team feel it should be extended to cover the prolonged season - which ran until August due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"Respect and admiration, Leo. All my support, friend," Messi's former team-mate Carles Puyol tweeted, to which current team-mate Luis Suarez replied with two clapping emojis.

I would love to see him in the premier League. Just not with Manchester United, man city, Liverpool or Tottenham

Lionel Messi: Barcelona want to 'build team around most important player in the world'

Barcelona still plan to build a team around captain Lionel Messi and are trying to convince him to stay, says sporting director Ramon Planes.

The 33-year-old Argentina forward told the club he wishes to exercise a clause allowing him to leave for free.

The six-time Ballon d'Or winner is Barca's record goalscorer on 634 goals.

"What's happened has happened and our idea is to build a team around the most important player in the world," said Planes.

"We want to build another winning cycle led by the best player in the world, the best in history.

"Barca and Leo are like a marriage, where both have given so much to each other, and have brought so much joy to the fans. I think the future is positive. I am an optimist."

Messi - who has only ever played for Barca - wants to leave after a trophyless season which ended with an 8-2 thrashing by Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Barcelona believe the clause has now expired and Messi is contracted to the club until 2021 with a 700m euro buy-out clause.

"We need experienced players like Leo Messi, as well as players for the team's future. We are putting every effort into ensuring that the relationship between Barca and Messi will continue. We are working internally to convince Leo," said Planes, who was speaking at the unveiling of signing Francisco Trincao.

"Barca has rebuilt itself many times in the past years and it always comes back stronger and right now we are at that stage."

Some consider the only thing that could placate Messi is the resignation of president Josep Maria Bartomeu and early elections.

But that may not be enough to keep a player who has won 10 Spanish titles and four Champions Leagues with the club.

Planes said: "We have to be very respectful. We can't make this a public discussion between Leo Messi and Barcelona because neither of the two deserve it.

"I don't think Leo deserves that and neither does Barca. And we will do a lot of internal work, we have done it and will keep doing it to build a winning Barca."

Lionel Messi: Barcelona forward 'risks FIFA ban' over contract dispute

Lionel Messi risks a FIFA ban if he leaves Barcelona without resolving his contractual dispute, a leading sports lawyer has claimed.

Messi has handed in a transfer request and remains under contract until the summer of 2021.

Nick De Marco QC, who has represented sport's governing bodies, players, clubs and agents since 2002, says world football's governing body is likely to be asked to settle any dispute in the first instance.

"If it ended up anywhere, it would be most likely in the FIFA Dispute Resolution Chamber because Messi, being Argentinian, the FIFA rules would apply, and FIFA has its own set of laws and rules," De Marco, of Blackstone Chambers, told The Transfer Show on Sky Sports News.

"So, it's unlikely to be Spanish law or English law or Swiss law but it would be the FIFA rules that apply, and they have a commission that can determine these things.

"Ultimately, either party can then appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. That's how these sorts of issues are normally dealt with.

"One possibility, and it's certainly not one I'm advising anybody, is a player simply just walks out and says, 'I'm entitled to walk out, so I'm walking out'.

"The risk with that strategy is, although FIFA will normally allow the registration to move with the player, if the club then brings a claim and succeeds, not only is the player liable to [pay] damages but also is likely to be banned under FIFA rules for a period of months and the new club signing him have a transfer embargo.

"It's such a high-risk strategy that, unless you were sure that the player was in the right, it's not a risk one would take."

De Marco, who is not representing Messi or Barcelona, and has no visibility over their contracts, believes a "commercial solution" is likely to be found.

"You have to read the contract as a whole," he explains.

"Even if it's a date, and the date is the date, if that's linked to other provisions that show what the parties really meant was the end of the season, then there's still an argument it's the end of the season.

"There are legal arguments on both sides but in my experience, in ninety-five per cent of these types of cases, you find a commercial solution.

"The last thing that Barcelona want is a player who's not fully committed and drawing those wages. It's not only bad for him, it's bad for the whole dressing room.

"The last thing a player like Messi wants is just to sit there and receive money without playing. For a player of his stature, and genius, he wants to be succeeding and, so, it's in the interests of both parties to work this out and come to a sensible compromise."

What is Messi's current contract status?

One thing that is crystal clear at this stage is Messi remains contracted to Barcelona until the summer of 2021.

The 33-year-old signed a four-year contract back in November 2017, a deal he claimed made his dream of finishing his career at his "home" Barcelona a reality.

"I'm happy to continue with the club, which is my home. My dream was to finish my career at Barca and we are moving down that path," he said three years ago.

Inserted into Messi's contract was a staggering 700 million euro (£626m) buy-out clause that would-be suitors would have to pay in order to lure him away from the Nou Camp.

The clause, coupled with Messi's commitment on renewal, seemed to make a Barcelona exit financially and emotionally unviable, but this week's incredible developments mean it is now more possible than anyone could have imagined.

What about Messi's exit option?
Also inserted into Messi's contract back in 2017 was a clause that states he could leave Barcelona for free at the end of every season should he wish, as Spanish football expert Graham Hunter explains.

"When Messi's last contract was signed, his camp argued for a 'get-out-of-jail free' clause at the end of every season," he told The Transfer Show.

"He had to inform the club in May that he wanted to leave, and they had to allow him to leave for nothing.

"Messi and his people have been prepared to parachute out of a failing football club for a very long time.

"When that clause was inserted it was typical of this club, that they can be told something in big, bold writing and misunderstand it or fail to act on it - just look at the Neymar fiasco."

No player is bigger than the club even if it is CR7 or Messi level beasts.

I believe it is in the best interest of both Barca and Messi to mutually agree on a respectable exit for Messi.

It is the end of an era for Barca or has been since a few years, this move might already be 2-3 years late.

Barcelona cannot become the same force with an old Messi. They need a new set up, fresh talent, fresh thinking and stars to turn things around.

The way people react to sports is strange. How someone living in Delhi/Islamabad can feel so hopeless about an Argentinian leaving a Spanish club for another rich club somewhere in Europe?

Those who think he is going to fail or slow down in the PL because he is too old now and Robertson stopped him once (after having his pants pulled down in Camp Nou) are in for a pleasant surprise.

He may be 33, but he is still the greatest player in the world by a massive margin and will destroy PL.

Him linking up with De Bruyne, Sterling and Bernardo Silva would be ridiculous.

However, I would still like him to come to an arrangement and stay at Barcelona. This amazing story shouldn’t end in this fashion.

There is a difference between Messi and Ronaldo.

Ronaldo was not a Madrid youth product and he never had the same connection with Madrid as Messi has with Barcelona.

Few Madrid fans never thought that Ronaldo would end his career at the club.

Barcelona however made Messi, the greatest player of all time. Him leaving the club is and was completely unthinkable, especially when he is still the world’s best player by some distance and is basically leaving because of the incompetence of the president.

If Messi does leave, Bartomeu will become the most hated figure in the city and even his life might be in danger.

Barcelona need to rebuild but they have to do it around Messi.

Like I said, it's in best interest of both which is why this must be resolved amicably and respectully instead of getting lawyers involved and stuff.

You can tell by the look on Messi's face he's dead from inside and is done carrying the weight for Barcelona especially with his mates gone.

He needs to take on a new challenge. There is nothing to prove but we he must look happy and motivated playing football otherwise forget leaving Bar a he should just retire.

It's a lot more convenient to target team manegement and board but there comes a time when players become too big for a club. Messi of today (same with Ronaldo) want to exert their dominance and have greater control. The fall out is inevitable because a player has to perform not run the club.l and no self respecting manager/board would want to have to deal with a player with such powers unless they feel absolutely dependent and helpless

In this regard, Sir Alex Ferguson was so good. No matter how a player he was dealing with, he always seemed to know when to end things and get them out of the picture for the better of the club.

It is strange. I cannot understand how a person living in Pakistan can be emotionally attached with a football club in Europe. It seems artificial and I think people do it just because others in their circle are doing it.

Yes, you will never find a person from subcontinent supporting Sunderland, Levante or Peru in football. Its always the stronger teams. Heck nowadays you find fans of Man City and Spurs which was unthinkable 15 years ago :maqsood.

It is no different to people admiring the best cricketers from other nations and ignoring the weak ones.

There is a reason why you will find plenty of Virat Kohli fans in Pakistan but no Rayudu fans.

It is human nature to gravitate it towards the best. People who like tennis in Pakistan would admire Federer, Nadal, Djokovic etc. rather than some 100th ranked player in the world.

If an American like cricket, who would he prefer watching? Australia or Zimbabwe?

Yes, you are right about this. However, I'm talking about building an affiliation with the club. Maybe when you first start watching you select a side to support based on the fact that it's doing well but then over the years an affiliation is formed.

I know lots of people in Pakistan who are Leeds fans and Tottenham fans from back in the day when Tottenham was a mid-tier club. I know Aston Villa fans as well. I, myself, have been a Liverpool fan since the 90's when they were hardly winning anything.

You have your fair share of glory hunters but you have people following clubs for genuine reasons as well. A really good friend of mine is a Newcastle fan because she lived there for a few years in her teens and just started following the club and now a good 15 years later she's still a fan.

Different people have different reasons to support a particular club, but eventually that glory hunting or whatever it is turns into genuine support and affiliation.

It is rare for people to jump from one team to another. I personally don’t know anyone who has done that.

So City might have plenty of glory hunting fans now just like Chelsea did 14-15 years back, but these people would eventually develop strong affiliation.

As long as you don’t jump ship, there is nothing wrong in supporting a successful team.

What I don't understand is, is Messi a free agent or not?

I really hope he comes to the PL because as a PL fan, I know I'll be in for a treat.

Also, I want him to prove all those boorish claims to rest when they say "he has to prove himself in the PL/outside La Liga", "Ronaldo has done it multiple leagues, whereas Messi has only done it in Spain".

I recently had a look at Messi's stats in the UCL and he has 26 goals against the big 6 in 33 matches. Imagine what he would do the rest of the PL sides.

I don't think his age is an issue. If Aubameyang is doing great at 31, I'm sure Messi will at 33.

He is not a free agent. He had a clause in his contract allowing him to leave for free however, that clause expired in July. Messi and his team are making a case that the clause should apply due to the extended season running August as a result of COVID-19.

Can someone explain in layman language what the contract issue is.

From what I have been hearing, he can trigger a release clause for free if he joins a club that is not participant in any major league like UCL. Guys like Xavi, Iniesta used this clause to go to Japan, Qatar.

If he wishes to go to one of the premier clubs however competing in Europe, there's a 600 million dollar transfer fee clause.

So it seems either some club is willing to pay all this money to get an ageing Messi or he's going to some.low profile club in another part of the world. Maybe back to Argentina?

Btw, you're welcome in Indian Super League :yk :))

Transfer fee for a release is actually 700 million euros.

Is Messi worth 700 million euros + wages at 33?

The release clause had an expiration date in July. Messi’s legal team is saying it should be extended due to the season being pro-longed as a result of Covid

Whatever the figure is, is there a possibility of Barcelona agreeing to accept a realistic figure for a transfer fee instead of the stupid figures being quoted in media. No club is going to pay 600-700 million euro for a 33 year old Messi.

The dispute is not about the fee they will sell him for. Messi had a clause in his contract that said, if he decided before the end of the season (June for a normal season) that he wanted to leave, then his contract would automatically be terminated, and Barcelona would be obligated to let him leave for free.

The issue now is that the season was extended due to Covid, so he only expressed his desire to leave in August and not May/June. Messi claims that the period for decision to leave was extended along with the season.

But isn't it also true that he can only be released for free if he doesn't join a club that competes with Barca in Europe? Something like that?

Strong rumours going around that Messi might join Kerala Blasters.

It's done already

I have not seen or read anything at all, but I may be wrong. Where did you hear that?

Messi had a clause that would have allowed him to leave for free at end of season but instead of saying end of season, a date was specified which passed.

Barca will argue that date expired, Messi can argue intention was clause applied to end of season.

It pains me to say it but Barca will be better off long term selling Messi rather force him to stay.

Barca squad depth is not on par with Real Madrid and with limited funds, hatd to turn things around.

Citys supposed offer of 100m plus Bernardo Silva,Jesus and Garcia looks to be the best. Cash- can be used on Lautaro as the new no9 and Jesus as a top notch bench player.

Koeman is implementing the double pivot so a 4-2-3-1 formation

This can suit Grizzy as the support striker to Lautaro.

Depth chart in attack

CF Lautaro, Jesus
AML Coutinho( can play AMC),Fati, Pedri

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has ruled out a move for Barcelona forward Lionel Messi, but admits the Argentine would be "great" for the Premier League.

Messi's future has been surrounded by speculation since asking to leave Barca but Klopp says there is "no chance" he will join the English champions.

Asked if he was interested in signing the 33-year-old, Klopp said: "Who doesn't want Messi in their team?

"The numbers are not for us, but a good player, to be honest."

Messi has been linked with a reunion with former Barca boss Pep Guardiola at Manchester City - something Klopp says will "obviously" help his rivals and make them "harder to beat".

City, who were Liverpool's closest rivals in the top flight last season and their predecessors as title holders, have remained tight-lipped on the rumours and have ruled out letting first-team regulars Bernardo Silva, Riyad Mahrez and Gabriel Jesus leave in any exchange deal for Argentina international Messi.

Lionel Messi to meet with Barcelona hierarchy to discuss future

Sky Sports News can confirm reports in Spain that Lionel Messi has requested a personal meeting with the Barcelona hierarchy to discuss a solution to his transfer request.

Messi wants his lawyers present too with the intention of finding a way out of the impasse over his contract clause and a way out of the Nou Camp this summer.

Should Messi engineer a move away from the club he joined as a 14-year-old, Manchester City are in the strongest position to swoop in.

Sky Sports News has been told both Messi and City boss Pep Guardiola want to renew their partnership at the Etihad - putting the Premier League runners-up in a commanding lead over other suitors.

Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan are both said to be preparing offers in an attempt to persuade him away from a reunion with Guardiola and a rendezvous with friend Sergio Aguero.

It remains uncertain that Messi can get out of his Barcelona contract, which still has one year left to run, in the current transfer window, having submitted a written transfer request on Monday.

Lionel Messi: Man City, PSG, Juventus - what is the latest transfer situation?

If we are talking percentages then Manchester City are very much in the driving seat to be Lionel Messi's next club.

Paris St-Germain have been in touch with Messi's dad, his agent, again about the possibility of signing the Barcelona captain, who submitted a transfer request on Tuesday.

And, perhaps most intriguingly of all, Juventus are now looking at the hugely unlikely scenario of organising some very daring financial deals and sponsorships that could see Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo playing together for the first time.

What a mouth-watering prospect that would be. But it is also close to impossible.

At the end of a week of countless headlines and rumours, there are two things we now definitely know above anything else, namely that Messi very much wants to leave Barcelona and Barcelona would very much like him to stay.

That is the simple analysis of what promises to become an even more complicated scenario than it already is.

And the reason for that is that both sides are ABSOLUTELY convinced that the clause of 10 June - the one that enables Messi to leave for free - gives them the right to defend their position.

Messi thinks he can walk away for nothing because that date was intended to be, effectively, the end of the season, but because of coronavirus the campaign ended up finishing much later, on 23 August with the Champions League final, two days before Messi let Barcelona know of his intentions in an official way (more on that later).

Barcelona firmly believe that the time for him to declare his intentions to leave has elapsed and that he is contracted until the end of next season.

The lawyers will be licking their lips in anticipation.

Messi would like to leave on the best terms possible. From his side nothing has changed.

Barcelona, meanwhile, have merely said that he is not for sale - unless of course someone thinks at this stage it is worth shelling out the 700m euros that is written into his buyout clause - and therefore see no point in any further meetings at this stage.

Messi is very keen not to leave the club in a bad way, not because of the board, but certainly because of the respect he has for the club and its fans.

Many people have focused on the burofax sent to the club informing them officially that he wanted to leave, claiming it was a disrespectful way of handing in his notice. It was nothing of the sort but rather no more or less than written confirmation - a form of recorded delivery - that informs in writing what Messi had told the club verbally on numerous occasions since he ceased negotiations for renewal around March.

The burofax was just a logical step along the way, with a meeting to try to arrange an exit in a friendly way being the next logical step. Messi's strategy has been unchanged throughout. The change would be if he decided to go to war with the club.

The Argentine now has no plans to make any statements in the immediate future, certainly not while there are still so many things to discuss and everything is up in the air. At such a time that things start to move in the right direction then he will be prepared to explain his feelings, but not before.

And on Sunday the team has to do their pre-season tests and training starts on Monday.

Rumours that Manchester City would be prepared to let any of their regular starters go in exchange for Messi are way off the mark. Angelino or Eric Garcia could feature in a deal for the player but no club is going to be able to pay a transfer fee of 100m euros plus his wages, even taking into consideration that these wages will be reduced wherever he goes next.

Barcelona will not accept a swap of players. They do not want anyone from City, they do not want to sell and would only be prepared to meet with Messi in order to renew his contract and not to negotiate a way out.

Everybody is positioning on clear terms.

All that makes the resolution impossible to predict. Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu quite clearly does not want to be the president who lets Messi go.

But in coming to that conclusion, who is he thinking about?

Certainly not the club, because as things stand he plans to keep an unhappy player locked into a club where he doesn't want to be and who can leave for free in 12 months.

Messi's departure would allow Barcelona to let other players grow and develop next season. And what players they are! Frenkie de Jong, Miralem Pjanic, Antoine Griezmann, Ousmane Dembele, Philippe Coutinho, Gerard Pique and Marc-Andre Ter Stegen to name just a few... They would need either now or in the near future to buy a strong central midfielder and a centre-back but all that is entirely doable.

To insist on the idea of not letting Messi go is an absurdity and shows a short-sightedness on the part of Bartomeu.

We wait to see what happens next, starting with whether Messi turns up for training on Monday.

The road snakes up and out of Castelldefels, away from the hubbub of the town center, away from the beach, into the hills. The houses grow larger with every turn. Basketball hoops are replaced by full-sized courts. Perfectly manicured gardens roll down the slopes. Blooms of bougainvillea pour over walls. Lionel Messi’s place is the last one on the left.

It is not his only property in Catalonia — Messi also owns the house in Gava Mar where his parents live, and he has an apartment in the city’s exclusive Pedralbes district, too — but Castelldefels has long been home. It is, he has said, the “ideal” place to live: the sea, the beach, the mountains, the peace and quiet of a pretty but unassuming resort town.

It is here that he and his wife, Antonella, have raised their three children. Friends live close by: He often carpools to training or to games with his neighbor, Luis Suárez. There are shops selling Argentine groceries. A handful of favored restaurants, down near the shore, know that when a certain friend calls, it means Messi is coming. They know to ask diners not to trouble him while he eats, but that he will be happy to pose for photos on his way out.

This is what Messi was giving up on Tuesday when he and his representatives sent Barcelona official confirmation of his intention to leave the club. He is not just ending a relationship with the club that spans two decades, that has seen him transformed from a 13-year-old kid signed on a contract written on the back of a napkin into, arguably, the finest player soccer has ever seen.

He is not just breaking a bond between player and team that has come to seem symbiotic. Barcelona is not Barcelona without Messi. But would Messi be Messi without Barcelona? He lifted this team to greatness, this club to unmatched prominence, but the converse was also true for a long time: Barcelona was not just his platform, his stage, it was a character in his story.

Those are all sacrifices enough, of course, but it is the prospect of leaving Castelldefels that best illustrates how serious Messi is, how desperate he must feel the situation has become, how much anger he has built up. He is not just prepared to give up his employer, to trade one jersey for another. He is prepared to walk away from the life he has built.

How it has come to this is well documented. Barcelona, a few years ago, was soccer’s gold standard: an empire that seemed destined to reign for a thousand years, or whatever elite sport’s equivalent of forever might be.

Now, it is fallen, the legacy of that great team of Messi and Andres Iniesta and Xavi Hernández shredded and squandered by dreadful recruitment, short-term vision and rampant self-interest.

When the news broke that Messi had asked to leave, his former captain Carles Puyol — a Barcelona icon — supported the player over the club. Suárez and Arturo Vidal, both already informed they were no longer required at Camp Nou, did so, too. Fans marched to the team’s headquarters and demanded the resignation of the current board, the group of executives who will now forever be marked as the people who pushed out the greatest player of all time.

Barcelona is a broken place, and the sympathy is with Messi. No wonder he has had enough. Though it is difficult to imagine him in another jersey, another set of colors, and though there might be sorrow — not just felt in Barcelona — at the thought of player and club going their separate ways, he owes it to himself to look elsewhere, to find a club where he can have the golden autumn to his career that he deserves.

That could be Manchester City, most likely, for a reunion with Pep Guardiola, the player and coach who brought out the best in each other; or Paris St.-Germain, maybe, where he could play once again with Neymar; or even Inter Milan, the club that has, more than any other, positioned itself as his first reserve, his break-glass-in-case-of-emergency option. Those teams might be able to match his ambition, to deliver him the fifth Champions League crown he craves.

It is not to delegitimize that orthodoxy to suggest it is not an entirely comprehensive picture. More than one thing can be true at once. For instance: Barcelona has, quite clearly, been appallingly run for some time; its executives merit most, if not all, of the abuse being hurled in their direction.

And yet, for all that Messi has — with reason — demanded the squad around him be strengthened, it is not quite that easy. Barcelona has the most expensive salary bill in soccer. It has boasted of being closer than any team to reaching annual revenue of 1 billion euros, but almost all of that is consumed by the salaries it pays its stars.

Messi alone accounts for a remarkable portion of that, and has, it goes without saying, provided ample value to justify it. But to overhaul the team, to revolutionize it, players would have to leave. Not fringe players or youth players, but players like Suárez and Vidal and Ivan Rakitic.

That is difficult enough, given the lack of peers who might match their salaries, but until the last week or so — and the aftermath of a humiliating defeat against Bayern Munich — the club felt it was politically impossible, too.

That could have been because it had been warned those kinds of changes would not be welcomed by Messi, or because it had intuited they would not be welcomed by Messi. It is impossible to know for sure — it is intriguing that Messi’s decision came after Suárez and Vidal had been told they would be allowed to leave — but regardless, the effect is much the same.

Barcelona has been trapped, in other words, in an impossible conundrum: How do you rebuild while keeping all of your highest-paid stars? How do you refresh a side and simultaneously retain, and play, many of the same players? To repeat: That does not mean the club’s missteps should be overlooked. But the fact that the board played it badly does not mean it did not have a poor hand.

Messi cannot, of course, be blamed for Barcelona’s demise — a take too hot to be taken seriously — but it is tempting to wonder if, to some extent, this sort of denouement was inevitable.

There is a price to be paid for the privilege of experiencing greatness: Clubs fortunate enough to have an iconic manager always spend a period in the wilderness as they try to replace them. Teams that enjoy heady days with one generation of players generally struggle to identify their successors. That is written somewhere in soccer’s hidden coding. It is part of its algorithm.

Such is Messi’s greatness that the bill arrived not when he left, but while he remained, as the lines blurred between what was in Messi’s interests and what was in the team’s, as the club became so fixated on keeping him happy that it lost sight of what needed to be done to make him happy.

And so, this week, we came to the end. Messi has determined that he must leave, he must go elsewhere, that he can no longer carry this team, this club, on his shoulders. He may find, too, that there is a personal cost to greatness: that wherever he goes, he will never truly escape what came to be known as Messidependencia.

Any club he signs for will shape itself around him. Any team he joins will look to him, first and foremost, to solve problems. He felt Barcelona was no longer the “winning project” he craves. Wherever he goes, he will find that he is expected to do quite a lot of the winning himself. That is the price of being Lionel Messi.

What awaits Barcelona is more daunting still. He has made a choice to find out what he can be without Barcelona; had things been different, it is a question he might never have needed to answer. Barcelona, though, knew this day would come. Perhaps not now, perhaps not like this, but eventually. It must face up to the prospect of what it can be without Messi.

No player, of course, is bigger than a club, but Messi was close. For more than a decade, he has been the team. For more than a decade, he has been a symbol of what Barcelona is, what it stands for, what it means. It was the ideal place for him. It is not any more.

I think they'll come to an agreement and he will stay at Barca.

Seems unthinkable that Barca would let him leave.

What if Messi stays at Barcelona and next year Bayern obliterate them again :)))

Barcelona are adamant they will not negotiate to allow Lionel Messi to leave the cub before his contract ends next year.

The 33-year-old Argentine has requested a personal meeting with the Barcelona hierarchy to discuss a solution to the impasse over his transfer request, Sky Sports News can confirm.

Messi asked to activate a release clause that would end his contract - which currently runs until next June - and allow him to leave for free this summer, but the club have said the clause has already expired.

However, Messi's lawyers are arguing that - in the spirit of the deal and good faith - the clause is still active after the rescheduled Champions League final on August 23, which was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Manchester City, coached by former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola, are seen as favourites to sign Messi, who has a buyout clause of 700m euros.

Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan are both said to be preparing offers in an attempt to persuade him away from a reunion with Guardiola and international colleague Sergio Aguero.

Messi hasn't spoken publicly since the 8-2 loss to Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals of the Champions League on August 14 at the end of a difficult season, which saw the club finish without a title for the first time since 2007-08.

Sky Sports' Kaveh Solhekol:

"I think the situation is that Messi wants a meeting with the Barcelona board to reiterate his desire that he wants to leave.

"Barcelona's position is not going to change. Messi and his representatives think there is a clause in his contract which means he can leave for nothing this summer.

"I think the message he will get in that meeting from Barcelona is 'you are not going anywhere for free, if you want to leave we believe your contract says that there is a release clause of 700m euros, that is what it will take'."

Spanish football expert Alvaro Montero told Sky Sports News the seeds for Messi's decision were sown when he met new boss Ronald Koeman last week:

"The main thing is that the meeting last Friday with Ronald Koeman was not as good as they expected for a football club like Barcelona.

"The meeting with Koeman didn't go well, from Messi's opinion.

"Koeman told him that he didn't count, for example, with players such as Arturo Vidal or Luis Suarez. And Messi didn't like that.

"The way of Koeman treating him in the media and the way he has expressed the way he wants to work in Barcelona, wasn't liked by Messi, so I think that was the situation."

Spanish football journalist Alvaro Montero on Sky Sports News:

"Manchester City is the best option because of the money, because of the Premier League and because of Pep Guardiola. Put everything together and it is a good situation for Messi.

"This evening in Spain, on a television programme, they said that Manchester United could be an option. Many people in Italy are saying that Inter could be an option. I don't think so because there is a difference in the financial situation of the Premier League and Italy, France, Spain or Germany.

"Of course, the Premier League is also maybe the best league in the world so I think Premier League plus Manchester City plus Guardiola is a good cocktail altogether.

"We know the union of Guardiola and Messi at Barcelona eight or nine years ago was amazing. Maybe the best team in the world ever. I would say there is a huge possibility of Manchester City and I would say they are the first ones in this race."

Messi has not turned up at the Ciutat Esportiva for RT-PCR test

Leo Messi remained true to his word and has not shown up at the Ciutat Esportiva this morning as the Barcelona squad were due to undergo RT-PCR testing for coronavirus.

All members of the first team squad were given a time to turn up at their Ciutat Deportiva with testing staggered throughout the morning. Jordi Alba and Martin Braithwaite were the first to arrive, at just after 8:00 hours, they were followed by Marc-André ter Stegen and Rafinha

Messi was due to report at the training ground at 10:15 hours this morning but did not show up. As far as Barcelona are concerned, Messi remains under contract at the club and therefore must comply with all of his obligations - including this morning's PCR test. However, that viewpoint is not shared by the player or his lawyers, who feel that after informing the club by burofax that he wants to leave, he no longer has to follow club orders.

By failing to show up at the Ciutat Esportiva for his PCR test, Messi is automatically ruled out of taking part in Monday's training session which has been programmed for 17:30 hours. It also leaves Barcelona with two options - to serve Messi a fine for breaching the terms of his contract by failing to show up for work or begin the process of releasing the player.

Lionel Messi can only leave Barcelona if €700m release clause is paid, says La Liga

La Liga has dashed Lionel Messi's hopes of leaving Barcelona on a free transfer by stating his release clause will have to be paid if he is to leave the Nou Camp.

Messi notified Barcelona this week that he intends to walk away from the club by exercising a clause in his contract that allows him to leave for free at the end of each season.

However, LaLiga have now bolstered Barcelona's stance, with the club insisting that the clause has expired and the only way Messi will be allowed to leave is if his €700m release clause is paid in full.

A LaLiga statement on Sunday read: "With regard to the different interpretations (some of which are contradictory) relating to the current contractual situation of FC Barcelona footballer Lionel Andres Messi that have been published across various media outlets in recent days, having analysed the player's contract with the club, LaLiga would like to clarify the following.

"The contract is currently valid and contains a release clause which is applicable should Lionel Messi decide to trigger the early unilateral termination of the contract, in accordance with article 16 of Royal Decree 1006/1985 of 26 June, which regulates the special employment status that professional sportspeople have.

"In compliance with the applicable regulations and protocol that apply in such instances, LaLiga will not carry out the prior visa-release process for the player to be unregistered from the (Royal Spanish Football) Federation if the sum in the aforementioned clause has not been paid beforehand."

La Liga's intervention comes just hours after Messi failed to report for coronavirus testing at Barcelona's training complex, meaning he will be unable to participate in Ronald Koeman's first training session as the club's new head coach on Monday afternoon.

It is understood the 33-year-old warned the club in advance via Burofax - a form of recorded delivery provided by Spain's postal service - that he was not going to be present. If Messi does manage to negotiate his Barcelona exit, Manchester City are currently the favourites to sign him.

The six-time Ballon d'Or winner's push to depart the Nou Camp comes after Barcelona finished the season without a trophy for the first time in 12 years and ended the campaign with a humiliating 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Ok so this will go down to the courts.

Messi has had a fall out with Barcelona and will not get a respectful exit.

Such a shame for a legendary reign to end this way

First an unforgettable 2-8 phainty from Bayern and now this.

In comparison, Ronaldo was lucky to have left on a high.

Messi, who has a buyout clause of €700m (£627m), has been tipped to move to Manchester City, where he could link up with his former manager Pep Guardiola.

Lionel Messi's Barcelona team-mates Luis Suarez and Arturo Vidal are the only players pushing for the forward to stay at the Nou Camp.

Barcelona consider Messi to be on strike and have fined him for failing to report for training on Monday and Tuesday, while the Argentine no longer considers himself a part of Ronald Koeman's squad.

There has been a deafening silence from most of Koeman's playing staff regarding Messi's situation, with the exception of Suarez - whose future at the club remains unclear - and Arturo Vidal, who is in a similar position.

The rest of the Barcelona squad, including those in Messi's inner circle such as Sergio Busquets and Gerard Pique, have so far kept quiet.

It will be difficult for Messi to remain with Barcelona, says his father

BARCELONA (Reuters) - It will be difficult for Lionel Messi to remain at Barcelona after he made public his desire to leave the Spanish club, his father and agent Jorge Messi said on Wednesday as he arrived in the city to negotiate his son’s future.

After flying in on a private jet, Jorge Messi is expected to meet club president Josep Maria Bartomeu later on Wednesday to discuss his son’s future, Spanish media reported.

A club spokesman declined to comment.

The six-times world player of the year insists he has a clause in his contract that allows him to leave on a free transfer - a claim disputed by Barcelona and La Liga, who say the Argentine can only leave if a rival club is willing to pay a 700 million euro ($830.20 million) buyout clause.

“I don’t know, I know nothing,” Messi’s father told Spanish TV channel Cuatro when asked if the 33-year-old would leave the only club he has played for professionally.

But when pressed if it would be hard for him to remain, he said “yes”. And asked how he sees Messi’s future at Barcelona, he replied “difficult, difficult.”

He dodged questions on whether Manchester City would be a good option for his son. A move to Manchester City would allow Messi to link up with his former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola.

“I don’t know, there’s nothing yet,” he said, adding he had not had any discussions with Guardiola, who enjoyed trophy-laden years as Barcelona manager with Messi in his pomp.

Messi did not show up on Monday for the first training session of the season under new coach Ronald Koeman.

Lionel Messi: Barcelona continue talks with player's father for second day

Lionel Messi's father and agent, Jorge continued talks with Barcelona on Thursday over his son's future.

Messi senior arrived in Barcelona on Wednesday morning and reportedly held exploratory talks with club president Josep Maria Bartomeu and the rest of the board.

Messi told the club last week he wanted to leave and the two parties are in dispute over the terms of his contract.

Jorge arrived earlier at his son's house on Thursday, according to Sky Sports News reporter Gary Cotterill, but spent just an hour there. Messi's friend and Barca team-mate Luis Suarez also visited, apparently to play five-a-side and paddle tennis.

Messi no longer considers himself a Barcelona player and did not attend training for the third consecutive day.

The club had been fining Messi €100,000 (£89,000) daily for his absence and missing a COVID-19 test, but Bartomeu has reportedly softened his stance and said the 33-year-old will not be fined, and is being given a few days off to consider his options.
