Aguero taken to hospital with chest injury as Barcelona draw first match since Koeman sacking

Sergio Aguero was taken to hospital for tests after suffering "chest discomfort" as Barcelona drew 1-1 against Alaves in their first match since the sacking of Ronald Koeman.

Aguero went down clutching the top of his chest and received treatment for several minutes before being helped off the pitch just before half-time.

Barcelona later said he was admitted to hospital to have a "cardiac exam".

Luis Rioja earned Alaves a point after Memphis Depay's opening curling effort.

Former Manchester City striker Aguero, 33, was taken away in an ambulance and Barca interim boss Sergi Barjuan told La Liga TV: "I can't tell you much more. I know he has been taken to a hospital and they are having tests done."

The Argentine was making his first start for the club since his move in the summer.

Aguero joined Barca on a two-year deal after 10 years at City, a spell which saw him become their all-time leading goalscorer with 260 goals in 390 games.

The point against Alaves keeps Barcelona in ninth place - eight points behind La Liga leaders Real Madrid, who beat Elche 2-1 earlier on Saturday.

In front of just over 37,000 supporters at the Nou Camp, interim coach Sergi Barjuan's side went closest to a first-half opener when Eric Garcia's downward header was saved by Alaves goalkeeper Antonio Sivera.

Depay was inches away from restoring Barcelona's lead soon after Alaves' equaliser, but the Dutchman could only steer his effort from Gavi's pass against the post.

Philippe Coutinho, who replaced Aguero late in the first half, stung Sivera's palms with a dipping shot as the visitors held on for their first point at the Nou Camp since 2016.

Former Barcelona star Xavi is set to take over as the club's manager with Al Sadd saying they have agreed to allow him to join the Spanish giants.

The Qatari club had previously said their 41-year-old boss would not be allowed to leave.

Xavi, who played 779 games and won 25 titles with Barca, had said publicly he hoped "to go home" as Barca boss and that an agreement could be reached.

Al Sadd say Barca have paid the release clause in Xavi's contract.

The World Cup and two-time European Championship-winning former Spain international left Barcelona for Al Sadd in 2015, first joining the club as a player.

He took over as head coach after retiring in 2019 and led them to last season's league title. They are unbeaten in 36 league games.

The Qatari club tweeted that Xavi "is an important part of Al Sadd's history" and wished him success in the future.

"The administration has agreed on Xavi's move to Barcelona after the payment of the release clause stipulated in the contract," the club posted on Twitter. "We've agreed on cooperation with Barcelona in the future."

Since Barcelona sacked Ronald Koeman on 27 October, Xavi has been heavily linked with a return to the Nou Camp where he spent the majority of his illustrious playing career.

Barcelona are ninth in La Liga after winning only four of their opening 11 games, leaving them nine points adrift of leaders Real Sociedad.

"Xavi informed us a few days ago of his desire to go to Barcelona at this particular time, because of the critical stage his hometown club is going through, and we understand this and decided not to stand in his way," said Al Sadd chief executive Turki Al-Ali.

The Catalan club has this season struggled under financial pressures, and failed to extend Xavi's former team-mate Lionel Messi's stay because of salary constraints.

Barcelona were unable to spend any money on new signings in the summer, with Memphis Depay, Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia arriving as free transfers and striker Luuk de Jong joining on loan from Sevilla.

Barca president Joan Laporta has previously said: "I have always said one day [Xavi] will be Barca's head coach but I don't know when.

Former Barcelona midfielder Xavi has returned to the Spanish club as manager with a contract until 2024.

The Spaniard, 41, has been manager at Qatari club Al Sadd since 2019, but they agreed on Friday to let him join Barca after his release clause was met.

Barcelona say Xavi's contract will run for the rest of the 2021-22 season and two more seasons.

He is expected to arrive back in Spain this weekend and will be officially unveiled on Monday at the Nou Camp.

In a video to fans, the World Cup and two-time European Championship-winning former Spain international said: "It wasn't goodbye, it was 'see you soon'. The Camp Nou has always been my home.

"You're my fans, my people, the club that I love the most. And now, I'm coming home. See you soon, Culers. Forca Barca."

Xavi, who played 767 games and won 25 titles with Barca in his 17 years in the first team, left for Al Sadd in 2015, first joining the club as a player.

Welcome home Xavi!

Can't wait for the club to go back to its true philosophy, Beautiful football.

Xavi secures first win as Barcelona boss

New Barcelona manager Xavi celebrated his first game in charge at the Nou Camp with a slim 1-0 derby victory over Espanyol in La Liga.

Although the home fans were able to claim bragging rights over their city rivals, the visitors could easily have won the game having wasted numerous chances in the second half.

Xavi eventually saw his side take the lead seconds after the restart through a Memphis Depay penalty.

The win puts Barca sixth in the table.

Xavi, who played 767 games and won 25 titles with the Catalan giants in his 17 years in the first team, had to wait two weeks to take the reins at the club he calls "home" due to the international break.

The Spaniard saw his side create an opening after 13 minutes after Jordi Alba's low cross was met by 17-year-old debutant Ilias Akhomach but the teenager blasted his shot high and wide over the crossbar.

The hosts continued to apply pressure on Espanyol but attempts by Sergio Busquets, Depay and the impressive Gavi were either not taken or saved by goalkeeper Diego Lopez.

A breakthrough for Barca finally came when Leandro Cabrera brought down Depay on 46 minutes. The Netherlands forward sent Lopez the wrong way to put the home team in control.

However, Barca were unable to dominate in the same way they had done in the first half and as the clock tick towards full time, Espanyol suddenly tested their shaky defence.

Raul de Tomas, who was the away side's best player, first watched a free-kick clip goalkeeper Marc Andre ter Stegen's right-hand post before going behind, and then an unmarked header struck the same spot four minutes later.

Landry Dimata was also left in shock as he was given acres of space inside the Barca penalty area, only for his header to go well wide - much to the despair of manager Vicente Moreno.

Next up for new Barca boss Xavi is a vital Champions League group game against Benfica on Tuesday. The Catalan giants will secure their place in the knockout stages if they beat the Portuguese side at the Nou Camp.

Barcelona's Pedri wins Golden Boy award for Europe's best under-21 player in top division

Barcelona midfielder Pedri has won the 2021 Golden Boy award for the best under-21 player playing in a European country's top division.

Pedri, 18, beat England and Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham to the award by a record 199 points.

He played more minutes than any other Barca player last season, going on to play at Euro 2020 and win Olympic silver with Spain.

However, he has not played since September because of a thigh injury.

In October, Pedri - who joined Barca from Las Palmas in 2020 - signed a new deal with the Catalan club which includes a 1bn euro (£846m) release clause.

Borussia Dortmund forward Erling Braut Haaland won the Golden Boy award in 2020.

First awarded in 2003, it has also been won by the likes of Wayne Rooney, Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero, Raheem Sterling and Kylian Mbappe.

Discipline. Rules. Order. Sacrifice.

These are probably not the words you would expect to hear repeatedly emphasised by new Barcelona coach Xavi upon his return to his former playing club with the aim of restoring lost glories.

As one of the greatest creative ball-playing midfielders the world has seen, you might think Xavi would arrive with heady promises of free-flowing, exciting, attacking football.

Instead, since replacing Ronald Koeman earlier this month he has been literally laying down the law by implementing a series of strict off-the-pitch rules, covering everything from everyday training ground routines to meal times and media appearances.

The intention, of course, is that these demanding habits will lead to a similar sharpening of focus on the pitch. Before Tuesday's must-win Champions League meeting with Benfica, it's only necessary to look back at the first group-stage game between the teams to understand why Xavi believes his strict measures are necessary.

The Portuguese team won September's meeting in Lisbon easily, scoring with their first shot on target - something Barca's opponents have done on eight occasions this season - and proceeding to wrap up a 3-0 victory with little trouble as Barca mustered just one effort on goal and looked vulnerable to every Benfica attack.

The most worrying thing about that capitulation is that it was neither new nor surprising. It was merely the latest in a long line of heavy defeats suffered by Barca since 2017 in the Champions League: 0-4 and 1-4 against PSG; 0-3 against Juventus twice; 0-3 against Roma; 0-4 against Liverpool; 2-8 and 0-3 against Bayern Munich.

For far too long they have been too easy to play against, routinely unable to find a compact shape and leaving big holes in the middle of the field for well-organised opponents to comfortably exploit.

It is no small task that lies ahead, even for a club legend who won 25 trophies in his 17 years as a player at the Nou Camp. Barcelona are currently seventh in La Liga, haven't won a European title since 2015, are in a battle for qualification for the Champions League knockout stages, and are severely limited by a lack of finance.

Xavi's biggest challenge is making his team competitive in the physical sense of the word. And he knows that on-the-pitch discipline begins with off-the-pitch discipline, an element blatantly lacking in a player-centric dressing room over the last few years.

A significant part of that process is determining how prominently the old guard of Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba and Gerard Pique should feature in the new regime. The trio, all former team-mates of Xavi, are well into their thirties and it has been reported the new boss believes they can only be expected to play one game per week at the required physical level.

They all started in Xavi's first game, a scrappy 1-0 win against Espanyol on Saturday and may again on Tuesday because of the must-win nature of the game, but in the medium-term future their places are far from guaranteed as Xavi looks to shape a more mobile and dynamic team.

Another issue to address is in the medical department, with Barca plagued by injuries all season and set to be missing six players against Benfica.

Specifically, players reinjuring themselves after being pushed too soon upon recovery from a previous absence has happened too often - including to Ansu Fati, Ousmane Dembele and Pedri this season alone - for it to be a coincidence, so there were no complaints when Xavi elected to change the club's medical staff and bring along his own people from Al-Sadd.

Again, this is part of Xavi's quest to bring a more serious and focussed approach to everything about the squad and its surrounding environment, in all areas of their activities both on and off the pitch.

Having said all that, we should definitely not expect Xavi to be a negative, defensive-minded coach. One of the biggest criticisms against Koeman came after September's 3-0 defeat to Bayern, more for the timid, passive nature of the performance than the actual result, and a major reason for Xavi's recruitment is that he will be more positive.

The new Barca boss has strong footballing principles straight out of the same Johan Cruyff school which also deeply influenced his former team-mate and manager Pep Guardiola. We will see Xavi insist upon the same high-pressing, passing-heavy style of play.

It is, however, often underappreciated that such a possession-based game - to be done well - demands a huge amount of work, both mentally and physically, to deny the opposition space and hunt down the ball whenever it is lost.

Nobody is better aware of that than Xavi, who covered more ground than any other player in perhaps the finest exposition of Barca's glory years, the 2011 Champions League Final victory over Manchester United.

Xavi might be remembered as an era-defining passer, but really his game was built just as much on non-stop running - both with and especially without the ball.

That kind of commitment to sheer physical effort has been lacking from Barca's make-up over the last few years, which have been marked by a gradual, complacent, lazy decay. Xavi is here to halt the decline, and the message to his players is clear: the hard work starts now.

I went to the Camp Nou in 2007 and had a fantastic few days staying in beautiful Barcelona. Back then, Barca FC were considered to be pretty much the best team in the world and had an air of invincibility, unstoppability, and peerlessness about them. The stadium itself felt like a hallowed corner of the Earth. Clearly there has been something of a decline in their fortunes more recently!

Barcelona manager Xavi says teenager Ansu Fati needs to recovery "mentally" after being forced off with a recurrence of a hamstring injury in Thursday's Copa del Rey defeat to Athletic Bilbao.

Fati, 19, made only his second appearance since November in the 3-2 loss, but was forced off in extra time.

The Spain winger was in tears as he made his way off the pitch.

Xavi says the club will decide on Monday if Fati needs surgery.

The Barca boss, 41, added: "It is a difficult situation. We've had a meeting with the family because of this new relapse.

"We want to recover him mentally, give him love, because it's a difficult moment and we need him. We want him never to be injured again.

"We will draw up a recovery plan. On Monday we will decide what to do with Ansu Fati."

Fati has endured a torrid time with injuries since making his first-team debut as a 16-year-old in August 2019, becoming the youngest player to appear for the club since 1941.

He has undergone four operations to repair a left knee, which was damaged in November 2020. A combination of knee and hamstring injuries has restricted him to just 10 appearances in all competitions this season.

Barcelona have opened talks with Wolves over a deal to re-sign Spain winger Adama Traore.

The Catalan club want an initial loan deal with an obligation to buy at the end of the season.

The move ends Tottenham's hopes of signing the 26-year-old, who began his career at Barcelona.

BBC Sport understands Antonio Conte's side had a £15m bid for Traore rejected last week, although sources at the London club deny making an offer.

Adama Traore: Barcelona medical for Wolves forward who is unconvinced by Tottenham role

Adama Troare was undergoing a medical in Barcelona on Friday evening ahead of his move from Wolves.

Barcelona have offered a loan move with a £29m option to make a deal permanent and Traore would like to return to the club where he started his career.

Sky Sports News reported earlier this week that Spurs were closing in on a £20m deal for the 26-year-old after their previous bid of £15m was rejected, but Barca now look to have moved ahead of Antonio Conte's side in the race to sign him.

Traore was unconvinced by Tottenham's offer to use him in a variety of positions.

Sky Sports News also understands that Tottenham will not attempt to convince Traore to turn Barcelona down and will instead focus on other targets.

Tottenham are continuing talks over a deal for Porto winger Luis Diaz as they look to strengthen their squad before the transfer deadline.

Traore was on the bench for Wolves for Saturday's 2-1 win over Brentford but came on for the final 15 minutes and saw a goal ruled out by VAR for offside.

He has been a long-time target of Spurs, who were in talks to sign him at the end of the summer transfer window. That interest has remained despite the change of head coach from ex-Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo to Conte.

Traore is out of contract in June 2023 and a new deal has been on the table for 15 months, with his current club keen to keep hold of him.

BREAKING: Adama Traore rejoins Barcelona on loan from Wolves.

Ousmane Dembele will stay at Barcelona until the end of the season, despite Chelsea making an enquiry about signing the winger on Deadline Day - a decision that has been criticised by the Spanish giants.

The Blues reignited their interest after hearing his potential move to Paris Saint-Germain had stalled.

But the lack of time, plus financial obstacles, meant a deal was always going to be tough to conclude on Monday, and talks ultimately failed to progress.

Chelsea remain interested in signing Dembele in the summer, when he will be a free agent.

The France international's contract expires at the end of the season, and he can now speak to clubs about signing a pre-contract ahead of a transfer in the summer.

Dembele was in Paris on Monday but returned to Barcelona after his potential move to PSG failed to materialise.

Barcelona officials told Dembele to find another club earlier this month after he decided not to accept a new contract that included a pay cut.

But the 24-year-old made it clear he wanted to stay at the Nou Camp and see out the remainder of his deal.

Dembele joined Barcelona for £97m plus add-ons from Borussia Dortmund in August 2017, but has struggled to justify his price tag due to a series of injuries and has started only six matches this season.

Barcelona's stadium will be renamed as the Spotify Camp Nou after the La Liga club agreed a multi-year partnership with audio streaming service Spotify.

The agreement, subject to ratification of the club's Extraordinary Delegate Members Assembly, will begin in July.

The Swedish company's name will also appear on the front of the men's and women's team shirts and training kits.
Barcelona said the stadium's rights deal would "continue over the ambitious redevelopment of the Camp Nou site".

The club added the team shirt deal would begin in the 2022-23 season and last "for the next four seasons".

It will be the first time that the title of Barcelona's stadium has included the name of a sponsor.

According to Catalan radio station Rac1, the agreement with Spotify is worth 280m euros (£235m).

Barcelona described the deal as a "first of its kind" for the club and said the partnership would seek to bring "the worlds of music and football together".

Last year, Spotify founder Daniel Ek made a bid to buy Premier League side Arsenal, which was supported by former Gunners legends Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp and Patrick Vieira.

However, Dembele went on to rediscover his form and make 143 appearances for Barcelona in five seasons. During that time he contributed 32 goals.

He also picked up six trophies during his time in the Spanish capital and represented France for the UEFA Nations League, 2018 World Cup and 2020 Euros.

Shakira and Barcelona defender Gerard Pique announce separation after 11-year relationship

The pair met shortly before the 2010 World Cup in South Africa when Pique featured in the music video for the tournament's official song, which was sung by Shakira.

Shakira and her partner Gerard Pique have announced they are separating.

The 45-year-old Columbian singer and the 35-year-old FC Barcelona defender have been together for 11 years and share two children, nine-year-old Milan and seven-year-old Sasha.

In a joint statement via their PR agency, they said: "We regret to confirm that we are separating.

"For the wellbeing of our children, who are our highest priority, we ask that you respect their privacy."

The pair met shortly before the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, when Pique featured in the music video for the tournament's official song, Shakira's Waka Waka (This Time for Africa).

It comes as the Hips Don't Lie singer faces a trial over alleged tax fraud charges in Spain after she lost an appeal last month.

Prosecutors claim she failed to pay up to 14.5 million euros (£12.4m) in tax on income earned between 2012 and 2014.

Her legal team has said they will keep defending her case with solid legal arguments.

"Shakira's conduct on tax matters has always been impeccable in all the countries she had to pay taxes and she has trusted and followed faithfully the recommendations of the best specialists and advisers," they said in a statement.

<b>Dani Alves: Barcelona right-back confirms he is leaving club for second time</b>

Dani Alves has confirmed he is leaving Barcelona for a second time after returning to the club last year.

The 39-year-old right-back rejoined Barcelona in November, five years after he left the Nou Camp for Juventus.

In all, Alves made 407 appearances for Barcelona, winning six La Liga titles.

"I would like to thank all the staff for the opportunity they gave me to return to this club and to be able to wear that wonderful shirt again. You don't know how happy I am," Alves said.

"It closes a very beautiful cycle and opens another even more challenging one," he added in a post on Instagram.

During his initial eight-year spell with Barcelona, Alves also won the Champions League three times and four Copa del Rey titles, among 23 trophies.

The Brazilian won Serie A with Juventus in 2016-17 and Ligue 1 with Paris St-Germain in both 2017-18 and 2018-19, with a move to Sao Paulo preceding his return to the Nou Camp.

He started both Brazil's wins over Japan and South Korea this month and will hope to be a part of his nation's World Cup squad later this year.

Barcelona have claimed that Frenkie de Jong is not for sale - even though Manchester United have a broad agreement in place to sign the midfielder.

Last week, United agreed a 65m euro (£56m) fee, plus add-ons, with Barca for the Netherlands international and that deal remains active.

But Barca president Joan Laporta said: "[De Jong] is a Barca player and unless we have a need or interest in selling him, we don't want to sell him."

De Jong joined from Ajax in 2019 for a fee of £65m plus £9.5m in variables, and signed a five-year contract. However, Barcelona may now need to sell high-earning players to balance the books.

BBC Sport understands an outline deal is in place with Premier League side United but progress towards completion has been slow.

A move to the Red Devils would reunite De Jong with his former Ajax boss Erik ten Hag, who is taking charge in his first season at Old Trafford.

Laporta added: "We know he [De Jong] has offers. If at some moment we were interested, we would consider it, but right now, we're not selling the player."

Leeds United forward Raphinha is close to a move to Barcelona, head coach Jesse Marsch has confirmed.

The deal for the 25-year-old Brazil playmaker is reportedly worth an initial 58m euros (£49m).

"I'm hopeful for him to get this deal done because I know it's his dream to play for Barcelona," Marsch said during the club's tour of Australia.

In two seasons at Elland Road he played in 65 Premier League games, scoring 17 goals and providing 12 assists.

The player looked set for a move to Arsenal before Barcelona expressed interest in him.

Premier League sides Chelsea and Spurs were also understood to have been keen on the former Rennes player but his preferred choice has always been the Catalan club.

Marsch said the money for Raphinha and from the sale of midfielder Kalvin Phillips to Manchester City "allows us to take the club on the next steps we need to go in the future".

It is understood the fee for Raphina's move to the Nou Camp could eventually rise to 65m euros (£54.7m) with add-ons.

Raphinha moved to Leeds from French side Rennes for £17m in 2020 and has two years left on his contract at Elland Road. The French club are believed to be due a sell-on fee based on the profit Leeds make.

Marsch omitted Raphinha from the Whites' travelling party for a three-game tour of Australia in the hope his future could be resolved swiftly.

The winger did however return to training at the club's Thorp Arch training ground with the remainder of the squad.

The Portuguese international was close to leaving City last summer but opted to stay and ended up playing a huge part in the club’s Premier League title win in 2021-22.

He scored eight and assisted four as the Citizens finished on 93 points, one point above second-placed Liverpool.

Barcelona have been linked with Bernardo for some time but looked unlikely to complete a deal given City slapped an £80m price tag on the playmaker.

A report last month claimed Bernardo has been informed of the La Liga club’s interest through his agent, Jorge Mendes, and the player and his representatives believed at that stage that they had to be ‘patient’.

It was claimed Pep Guardiola had spoken with Barcelona president Joan Laporta and the 27-year-old has a ‘verbal agreement’ with the City manager that he can leave if a ‘good offer’ from Barca comes in.

A further report then claimed Bernardo had agreed a switch to Barcelona, and negotiations had started over a deal ‘between €85m and €95m’.

And now, according to Spanish journalist Gerard Romero (via si.com), Barcelona and City have agreed a fee just short of €80million for Bernardo Silva, with Mendes heavily involved in talks between the two clubs.

Barca boss Xavi views Bernardo as the ‘ideal piece of the jigsaw’ for his side.

Bernardo has told Guardiola of his desire to leave Manchester, and while the City boss wants to retain his services, he recently admitted that he will not stop players who want to leave from doing so.

“As of today, I think Bernardo will continue at Man City next season but as I always said, I don’t like to keep players that are unhappy,” Guardiola said when announcing a late-August friendly between City and Barcelona.

“But Bernardo is important and I think he will stay.”

<b>UPDATE</b>

Barcelona have reached a "verbal agreement" with Bayern Munich to sign Poland striker Robert Lewandowski, says the Bayern president.

The 33-year-old, who has one year left on his Bayern contract, told the club last month that he wishes to leave.

Lewandowski scored 50 goals in 46 games last season as he helped Bayern win a 10th straight Bundesliga title.

"It's good to have clarity for all parties," said Bayern president Herbert Hainer.

"We have come to a verbal agreement with Barcelona.

"Robert is an incredible player and he won everything with us. We are incredibly grateful to him.”

Lewandowski joined Bayern on a free transfer from Borussia Dortmund in 2014 and has scored 344 times in 374 games for the club, making him their second-highest scorer of all time behind Gerd Muller.

The Pole has won the league in all eight of his seasons at Bayern and also helped the Bavarians win the Champions League in 2019-20.

Bayern have also announced that Germany winger Serge Gnabry, 27, has signed a contract extension until 2026.

Barcelona completed the signing of Raphinha from Leeds on Friday in a deal worth up to £55m having already signed Franck Kessie and Andreas Christensen on free transfers earlier this month.

Robert Lewandowski: Poland striker completes move from Bayern Munich to Barcelona

Barcelona have signed Poland striker Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich on a four-year contract worth 50m euros (£42.6m).

The 33-year-old had one year left on his contract with the German champions but in May said: "My story with Bayern is over.".

He has joined his new team-mates in Miami as part of Barcelona's four-match tour in the United States.

"I'm finally here. I'm delighted to be at Barca," Lewandowski said.

"The last few days have been very long, but the deal is done and now I can focus on a new chapter and challenge in my life.

"I've always wanted to play in La Liga and for the big clubs.

"I'm here to help Barca get back to the top and win as many titles as possible."

Lewandowski, who had a buyout clause of 500m euros (£425.9m), joined Bayern on a free transfer in 2014 after his departure from Borussia Dortmund.

Fight between Barcelona and Real Madrid players

<div style="width: 100%; height: 0px; position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.250%;"><iframe src="https://streamable.com/e/3ulozr" frameborder="0" width="100%" height="100%" allowfullscreen style="width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute;"></iframe></div>

Even though the El Clasico between Real Madrid and Barcelona in Las Vegas on Sunday was a pre-season 'friendly', things turned sour mid-game as a brawl broke out at the Allegiant Stadium. Antonio Rudiger and Ronaldo Araujo almost came to blows and for a moment nothing seemed 'friendly' about the fixture.

Even though Raphinha's long-range strike settled the affair as Barca emerged 1-0 winners, both sides were eager for bragging rights from the moment the match kicked off. There was a time when every El Clasico featured at least one brawl when Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho were managers of Barca and Madrid respectively.

Since then, the rivalry has only grown albeit the fixtures have become less violent, or so to say, at least. However, it seemed that Real Madrid and Barcelona players turned back time as a fight almost broke out on Sunday.

A video of the brawl during the El Clasico has gone viral on social media.

It all stemmed from a rash tackle on Vinicius Junior after which Rodrygo and Sergio Busquets were seen having a go at each other. The pair of Vinicius and Busquets grabbed each other's shirts and had to be separated.

In the moment of madness, Barca defender Araujo jumped onto the scene, and then nearly exchanged blows with Real Madrid's new signing Rudiger. The pair were separated after a lengthy standoff and play continued afterwards.

Jules Kounde: Barcelona agree deal with Sevilla to sign France defender

Barcelona have agreed to sign France centre-back Jules Kounde from Sevilla for a reported transfer fee of 50m euros (£41.85m).

However, Barca say the deal is subject to the 23-year-old passing a medical.

Kounde, who has won 11 France caps since his debut in 2021, had recently been linked with a move to Chelsea.

The defender has made 133 appearances for Sevilla, and won the Europa League in his first season there after joining from Bordeaux in 2019.

He also started in France's 2-1 victory against Spain in last year's Nations League final.

Kounde's imminent arrival at the Nou Camp follows Barcelona's signing of Poland striker Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich for £42.6m, and Brazil winger Raphinha's arrival from Leeds in a £55m move.

Ivory Coast midfielder Franck Kessie and Denmark defender Andreas Christensen have also joined manager Xavi's side on free transfers from AC Milan and Chelsea respectively, while France winger Ousmane Dembele has signed a contract extension.

Barcelona are willing to offload 33-year-old Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to Chelsea.

Frenkie de Jong "wants to stay" at Barcelona despite interest from Manchester United, says the club's president Joan Laporta.

The Premier League side agreed a £63.5m deal for the Netherlands midfielder, 25, last month, but the move is yet to be finalised.

De Jong came on at half-time and scored in Barcelona's 6-0 friendly win over Pumas UNAM on Sunday.

"He is a Barca player of great quality and we want him to stay," said Laporta.

"He has offers but we want him to stay and he wants to stay too."

De Jong has been linked with a move to Chelsea, but is also a key target for new Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, whose side lost 2-1 at home to Brighton on Sunday in his first game in charge.

Reports have suggested Barcelona want De Jong to take a wage cut should he remain at the Nou Camp, amid the club's financial troubles.

The club are currently involved in a disagreement with De Jong over wages deferred by the Dutchman in the last couple of years which are now due to be paid.

Barcelona have so far spent over £120m this summer on new signings Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha and Jules Kounde, with Andreas Christensen and Franck Kessie arriving on free transfers.

Meanwhile, Chelsea's Spain left-back Marcos Alonso is also close to joining the club.

Barcelona raised money for transfers this summer by selling shares of their domestic television rights and in-house production company, Barca Studios.

However, the club has failed to register the players with La Liga requesting that more money be raised.

Should Barcelona not register their new signings in time, they will not be available for their season opener against Rayo Vallecano on Saturday.

Barcelona were frustrated in their opening La Liga game as Rayo Vallecano held on for a goalless draw.

Robert Lewandowski was among the summer recruits that were making their debuts, but he could not break the deadlock.

The Poland striker was adjudged offside with a first-half effort, and smashed the best chance after the break wide.

Sergio Camello nearly grabbed a winner for Vallecano, while Barca midfielder Sergio Busquets was sent off in stoppage time for a second yellow card.

Having registered four of their new signings to play only 24 hours before kick-off, there was a cause for optimism around the Nou Camp as the game began.

Barca had been unable to register new players because of La Liga financial regulations, but freed up funding with several "economic levers" which allowed Lewandowski, Andreas Christensen and Raphinha to start this game, while Franck Kessie was named on the bench.

The hosts had 21 shots to Vallecano's four, but as the game wore on. tensions began to grow as the visitors remained resolute in defence.

Lewandowski, signed from Bayern Munich for £42.6m, had the best chance after the break when he spun his marker but could only fire wide as he failed to score on the opening day of a season for the first time in eight years.

Barcelona need to sell players to register French defender Jules Kounde, manager Xavi says.

Kounde, 23, joined from Sevilla in July for a reported £42m fee but has not been able to play as the club need to comply with La Liga financial rules.

Barca registered four other new players the night before their league opener last weekend after freeing up funding with several 'economic levers'.

"At the moment, we don't know anything. We are on standby," Xavi said.

The manager, whose side face Real Sociedad on Sunday, added: "We are waiting. Kounde is a great leader and a great player. Hopefully he shows it soon - tomorrow, if he can play.

"He has trained very well, I see him in good spirits, but we need to sell players to be able to register him."

Chelsea are reportedly interested in striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, while Dutch forward Memphis Depay has been linked with an exit from the Spanish club.

"The transfer market ends on 31 August and we don't know what will happen," Xavi said.

"Auba and Memphis are still here, so tomorrow we will use them. But the priority is to register Kounde."

New signings Franck Kessie, Andreas Christensen, Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha were involved in last Saturday's 0-0 draw against Rayo Vallecano.

Spain midfielder Gavi has signed a new contract with Barcelona until 2026, with a 1bn euros (£865m) release clause.

The 18-year-old has played for Barcelona since 2015 and was under contract until 2023.

He made his first-team debut in August 2021, aged 17 years and 24 days, becoming the fourth-youngest player in the club's history.

Gavi has started in all Barcelona's La Liga matches this season.

He became the club's third-youngest scorer when he netted against Elche in December 2021.

The former youth product has also been a vital player for Spain since making his debut in October 2021, becoming the youngest player to represent his country at full international level.

He became the national team's youngest scorer by scoring against the Czech Republic in June - aged 17 years and 304 days - breaking the record set in 2020 by Barca team-mate Ansu Fati.

Barcelona recorded a profit of £86m for the last financial year and expect to make a £240m profit next year, the club has announced.

This summer the Spanish club were unable to register new players because of La Liga financial regulations having made a loss of £422m the previous year.

However, they freed up funding with several 'economic levers'.

The club said it closed the 2021-22 financial year with a turnover of £890m.

Financial restrictions meant there were delays in registering new signings including Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha this summer.

The 'levers' have involved selling shares of their future television rights and their media production unit Barca Studios.

In August, they sold an additional 24.5% of Barca Studios to Orpheus Media for 100m euros (£84.6m) - this was expected to generate enough revenue to satisfy La Liga and allow Barca to register at least some of their new players.

Barcelona are second in La Liga on 16 points after six games, two points behind Real Madrid.

Barcelona beaten by Manchester United: Xavi hopeful of European honours next season

Barcelona manager Xavi hopes they will be competing for major European honours again next season despite experiencing their earliest exit in 25 years on Thursday.

Not since the 1998-99 campaign when they failed to make it out of a Champions League group containing eventual Treble winners Manchester United, have Barcelona failed to reach the last 16 of any European competition.

That is their fate this season following the 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford, which eliminated them from the Europa League.

It continues a terrible recent run in Europe for Barca, who failed to make it out of their Champions League group in the last two seasons, were beaten 4-1 at home by PSG in the last 16 the year before that and in 2020 suffered a humiliating 8-2 quarter-final loss to Bayern Munich.

"Hopefully next season," said Xavi, when asked when the club who reached the last eight for 14 seasons in a row to 2021 would compete in the later stages again.

"Last year we weren't able to compete in Europe. This year we have competed against Bayern and Inter and we have competed against Manchester United. We need to get better. But we have done well and we will come back even stronger next season."

Barcelona face charges of corruption over payments the club made to Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira - a former vice-president of Spain's referees' committee.

It emerged last month that Barca paid Negreira and a company he owns a reported total of 8.4m euros (£7.4m) between 2001 and 2018.

A Barcelona court heard on Friday that Barca, former club officials and Negreira had been indicted for "corruption", "breach of trust" and "false business records".

These lawsuits, brought by the Barcelona public prosecutor's office, target the club, as well as former presidents Josep Maria Bartomeu and Sandro Rosell.

Uefa is to investigate payments made by Barcelona to a former vice-president of Spain's referees' committee.

Uefa has appointed ethics and disciplinary inspectors to look into payments allegedly made for favourable refereeing decisions.

A court heard Barcelona have been indicted for "corruption", "breach of trust" and "false business records".

Prosecutors allege Barca paid 8.4m euros (£7.4m) to Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira and his Dasnil 95 company.

Barcelona, who deny any wrongdoing, acknowledged the payments were made to Dasnil 95 between 2001 and 2018.

Uefa said: "Ethics and disciplinary inspectors have been appointed to conduct an investigation regarding a potential violation of Uefa's legal framework by FC Barcelona in connection with the so-called 'Caso Negreira'".

The payments, revealed by radio station Ser Catalunya, came to light following an investigation by tax authorities into Dasnil 95.

"FC Barcelona obtained and maintained a strictly confidential verbal agreement with Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira so that, in his capacity as vice-president of the technical arbitral committee (CTA) and in exchange for money, the latter carries out actions tending to benefit FC Barcelona in decisions by the referees," said the public prosecutor's office.

The Catalan club described the company as "an external technical consultant" which was paid to compile video reports related to professional referees "with the aim of complementing the information required by the coaching staff".

Former Barcelona presidents Josep Maria Bartomeu and Sandro Rosell, as well as Negreira, have been indicted alongside the club.

The lawsuits were brought by the Barcelona public prosecutor's office.

La Liga chief executive Javier Tebas has said that current Barcelona president Joan Laporta should resign if he was unable to explain the payments.

Real Madrid said that "in defence of its legitimate rights, it will appear at the trial when the judge opens it up to the affected parties".

An investigation into claims that Barcelona paid referees for preferential treatment is part of a smear campaign, says club president Joan Laporta.

Prosecutors allege Barcelona paid Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira, former vice-president of Spain's referees' committee, 8.4m euros (£7.4m).

Barcelona say the money was for consultancy work.

"This is one of the most ferocious attacks in our history," Laporta said.

"I am convinced that FC Barcelona has not committed any crime of sports-related corruption. I hope that sooner rather than later it is fully exonerated.

"I ask FC Barcelona supporters to be as united as ever in defence of our crest, our essence, and our ownership model, which is that of a club owned by all of its members."

Last month a court heard that Barca had been indicted on charges of "corruption", "breach of trust" and "false business records".

European football's governing body Uefa has said it is also investigating the matter.

Laporta said Barcelona have a paper trail of the payments made between 2001 and 2018.

"Some services were provided," he said. "They were documented. There were invoices, payments registered in the accounting books. There was no crime of corruption."

Laporta accused La Liga president Javier Tebas of trying to "damage Barcelona's reputation" and said rivals Real Madrid, who have joined the prosecutor's case, have always been favoured in terms of refereeing decisions.

Sergio Busquets to leave Barcelona after 18 years: Long-serving midfielder to depart Nou Camp

Long-serving Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets has announced he will leave the club this summer at the end of his contract, after 18 years at the Nou Camp.

Busquets has spent his entire professional career at the club where his father also played, but announced in a Twitter video he will not renew his contract when it expires on June 30. He has been captain of his boyhood club since 2021.

The 34-year-old first joined Barca from Jabac Terrassa as a 15-year-old and went on to make more than 700 appearances for his local club, winning 23 major honours including eight LaLiga titles and three Champions Leagues.

Even in latter years, Busquets has continued to serve as a regular member of the Barcelona first team and has made at least 30 appearances in each of his 15 seasons with the senior squad - only five players have featured more for the club during this campaign.

His emergence served as a hallmark of the Pep Guardiola era in Catalonia, as he was handed his first LaLiga appearance by the then-new boss in September 2008 and went on to form part of a formidable midfield trio alongside Andres Iniesta and Xavi, the current Barcelona manager.

Even as a 19-year-old, he would go on to feature 41 times in his debut season and earned his first LaLiga, Champions League and Copa Del Rey titles in that campaign.

"It has been an unforgettable journey," he said in the video announcing his departure. "Since I was a child coming to the matches, or watching them on TV, I always dreamed of playing with this shirt at this stadium.

"The reality has exceeded all my dreams. I wouldn't have believed you if you told me when I arrived as a youth player that I would play 15 seasons for the best club in the world, the club of my life, of which I have been, am and always will be a fan, member, player, captain, and surpass 700 matches."

Busquets' final game for the club could be a newly announced friendly against Vissel Kobe in Tokyo on June 6, giving Barca's famous midfield trio a fitting send-off with Iniesta still a regular player for the Japanese side, and Xavi the current head coach of Barcelona.

As well as his honours with Barca, Busquets also won 143 caps with Spain and lifted both the 2010 World Cup and 2012 European Championships with his country.

He is likely to sign off with another domestic trophy with Barcelona. Xavi's side are 13 points clear at the top of LaLiga and will secure the league title with victory at Espanyol on Sunday.

Barcelona crowned La Liga champions after derby win

Barcelona sealed their first La Liga title since 2018-19 with four games to spare after a stylish 4-2 win at the home of city rivals Espanyol.

Barca were 3-0 up by half-time, Robert Lewandowski scoring his 20th league goal of the season before Alejandro Balde, 19, doubled the lead.

Lewandowski added the third before Jules Kounde's header made it 4-0.

Espanyol did reduce the deficit through Javier Puado and Joselu but remain in trouble near the bottom of the table.

Barcelona have 85 points, 14 more than nearest rivals Real Madrid, with 12 points left to play for.

It is their first La Liga title since club legend Lionel Messi left in August 2021 and first since Xavi was appointed manager in November 2021.

Meanwhile, Espanyol are in danger of a second relegation in four seasons from La Liga after a ninth league defeat in 11 games.

They are four points from safety with four matches left.

Barcelona under formal investigation for suspected bribery in referees' case

Barcelona is under formal investigation for suspected bribery in an investigation spanning two decades of activities at the country’s refereeing committee, according to a court document seen by Reuters.

The investigating judge, Joaquín Aguirre López, said this month that Barcelona may have benefited from possible systemic corruption. In a statement in February, Barcelona denied any wrongdoing.

In March prosecutors filed a complaint over alleged payments of more than €7.3m over 17 years to firms owned by José María Enríquez Negreira, who was vice-president of the football federation’s refereeing committee (CTA) from 1993 to 2018.

Barcelona: Spanish police raid referee offices as part of corruption investigation

Spanish police raided the offices of the referees' committee as part of an investigation into Barcelona's alleged corrupt payments to an official.

Barcelona face charges of corruption over payments made to Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira, a former vice-president of the committee, in return for favourable refereeing decisions.

Uefa is also investigating the matter.

Barcelona deny any wrongdoing and no arrests were made during the search in Madrid.

The Spanish Civil Guard searched the Spanish Technical Committee of Referees (CTA) headquarters on Thursday.

BBC Sport has been told that the judge presiding over the case demanded documentation from the CTA. This was not sent, which prompted the raid.

The initial criminal investigation was brought by the Barcelona public prosecutor's office in March, with European football's governing body Uefa launching its own investigation shortly after.

It is alleged that Barcelona paid 8.4m euros (£7.4m) to Negreira and his Dasnil 95 company.

The payments were initially investigated as part of a tax probe into the company run by Negreira.

Barcelona made payments to the company totalling a reported 1.4m euros (£1.2m) between 2016 and 2018, and paid Negreira about 7m euros (£6.2m) between 2001 and 2018, the year he left his role with the referees' committee.

Barcelona acknowledged they had paid Dasnil 95, which it described as "an external technical consultant", to compile video reports on referees "with the aim of complementing the information required by the coaching staff".

They said paying for reports was "a habitual practice among professional clubs".

In February 18 of the 19 other La Liga clubs issued a statement expressing "deep concern".

In July Uefa provisionally cleared Barcelona to play in this season's Champions League while its investigation is ongoing.

Joan Laporta: Barcelona president facing bribery investigation

Barcelona president Joan Laporta is being investigated for suspected bribery by Spanish prosecutors.

He is one of seven people who are being investigated over payments of £6.3m (€7.3m) made by Barcelona to former senior referee Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira.

Judge Joaquin Aguirre Lopez is investigating:

- Joan Laporta (president 2003-10 and 2021- present)

- Josep Maria Bartomeu (president 2014-20)

- Sandro Rosell (president 2010-14)

- Oscar Grau (former club executive)

- Albert Soler (former club executive)

- Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira (former referee and vice-president of Spain's referees' committee)

- Javier Enriquez Romero (Negreira's son)

Barcelona and all those being investigated deny any wrongdoing.

Prosecutors are investigating payments made between 2001 and 2018 to Negreira and his company Dasnil 95.

Negreira is a former referee and was vice-president of Spain's referees' committee between 1994 and 2018.

Barcelona are facing charges of corruption, breach of trust and false accounting.

They deny any wrongdoing and say the payments were for consulting work including refereeing reports.

In March, UEFA appointed ethics and disciplinary investigators to look into the case.

Barcelona were allowed to play in the Champions League this season but UEFA said in July "a future decision on admission/exclusion from UEFA club competitions is reserved".

Barcelona won nine Spanish titles between 2001 and 2018.

Robert Lewandowski scored twice as Barcelona came from behind to beat struggling Alaves in La Liga.

Samu Omorodion's goal after 18 seconds had given the visitors a shock lead.

Lewandowski headed the hosts level from Jules Kounde's cross and then scored the winner from the penalty spot after Raphinha was fouled.

The result leaves Barca third in the table, four points behind surprise leaders Girona and two adrift of second-placed Real Madrid.

Lewandowski's goals were his sixth and seventh in the Spanish top flight this season, ending a run of six games without a goal for the 35-year-old, his worst sequence at club level since February 2011 with Borussia Dortmund.

However, they masked a disjointed performance from Xavi's side, with Omorodion's goal the fastest conceded by Barcelona in a home league match this century.

The hosts, who were playing in a half-empty Barcelona Olympic Stadium, with the Nou Camp under renovation, were also fortunate not to fall further behind with Omorodion missing a glorious close-range chance to double Alaves' lead.

"We need to be conscious about our moment and be self-critical, we are not playing good football lately and need to improve mightily going forward," Xavi told Movistar Plus.

"The international break has arrived in good time and will do good for us, so we can reflect and work hard to correct our mistakes. I'm optimistic and I think we have enough talent and grit to come back much better in two weeks."

Marc-Andre ter Stegen: Barcelona & Germany goalkeeper to have lower back surgery

Barcelona and Germany goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen will undergo surgery on a lower back injury.

The 31-year-old last played on 12 November, and has missed three Barcelona games and two for Germany while the injury was managed.

No timescale has been put on his recovery yet, with Barcelona saying he will have surgery this week and a new statement will then be released.

"The break obviously annoys me," Ter Stegen wrote on Instagram.

"It is the right and safe decision in order to come back in the best conditions for my club Barcelona and national team Germany."

Ter Stegen has made 17 appearances for Barcelona this season, keeping eight clean sheets.

He had also started all four of Germany's matches during the current season.

How will Barcelona line up against Valencia in their final La Liga away match of 2023?

The Blaugrana come into this one on the back of two horrible losses to Girona and Royal Antwerp that have put Xavi Hernández’s status as first team coach in jeopardy and led to a lot of criticism of everyone involved with the club, from coach to players and management as well.

It’s a tough period for the club and its fans, but a win against Valencia can help begin to restore confidence as the Bats are always a brutal test in their home stadium. Here’s how we think Xavi will line up his troops for Saturday’s battle.

After resting a few of his key players with disastrous results in the Champions League in midweek, Xavi will revert to a strong starting XI looking for the spark of confidence and quality that his best players can bring on a tough environment.

The back four of Ronald Araujo, Jules Kounde, Andreas Christensen and João Cancelo has been the coach’s favorite in recent games, but it probably won’t be the case for this one. Kounde has been better at right-back than center-back since returning from injury last month and Araujo is fully rested after being given the night off in Belgium, so it makes sense to give the Frenchman a spot on the bench on Saturday and put Cancelo back on the right.

That opens the door for Alejandro Balde’s return to the left-back spot, as Xavi looks for a spark from the two attacking full-back setup that worked so well in September and October.

The question has been put to an end. The agent spoke about Lewandowski's future in Barcelona

Pini Zahavi, the agent of Barcelona forward Robert Lewandowski, has dispelled rumors about his client's future.

Many media outlets wrote that the Polish national team forward would leave the team from Catalonia, as his form had significantly deteriorated compared to last season. According to Mundo Deportivo, the footballer's agent has recently met with the president of Barcelona, Joan Laporta, with whom he has friendly relations.

During a joint dinner, the parties discussed issues of Lewandowski's future. At the same time, journalists managed to ask Pinio whether the striker would leave the club.

Zahavi replied categorically: “Of course he is staying.” The publication writes that the agent was generally surprised that journalists were so actively pursuing the topic of the Polish footballer’s departure. This season, Robert played in 20 matches for Barcelona, making nine appearances. He also has four assists.

Xavi was unhappy with Barcelona's victory

Barcelona coach Xavi was dissatisfied with the way his team played with Almeria in the match of the 18th round of the Spanish championship.

The Catalans won with a score of 3:2, although they could have won a more confident victory, says the coach, quoted by Barça Universal.

“The meeting should have ended with a score of 2:0 or 3:0, but the team does not show the same spirit that it had in the championship season.

What I see is that we lack aggression and concentration, and this is unacceptable. We gave Almeria two goals and that sums up our whole season in a nutshell,” said the coach.

It is reasonable to mention that based on the results of 18 rounds, the Catalans are only in third place in the standings. They are six points behind the leading Girona, although the leader has a game in hand. In second place is Real Madrid, which is two points behind first place.

Barcelona could be banned from UEFA Champions League: report

Barcelona face a possible elimination from the UEFA Champions League (UCL) 2024/25 season, which could increase to two to three years, due to alleged violations of UEFA’s financial regulations, reported German newspaper Welt.

According to the European football governing body, clubs are obliged to offset expenses with corresponding income, which includes the most recent three-year cycle.

Barca’s balance sheets are a mess which is no secret to anyone and despite that the Blaugrana announced a net profit of €304 million in September which opened the discussion of possible penalties as, according to UEFA’s financial regulations, only transactions that were derived from football business can be counted.

While Barca’s profit mostly included off-the-field income like the sale of future TV and marketing rights and others.

If the case proceeds and reaches its conclusion, Barca are likely to be banned from UCL for up to three years.

However, as per Spanish source Mundo Deportivo which is close to the club, Barcelona are not worried about the matter as the club knows that all “lever” transactions were done with La Liga’s approval.

The Catalan club were not surprised that UEFA’s report came just two days after the European Union Court of Justice’s historic ruling on the European Super League (ESL) as they are the main advocates of ESL alongside Real Madrid and Juventus.

Barcelona, along with Real Madrid have faced constant backlash from UEFA, FIFA, and La Liga for their constant attempts to create ESL.

It must be noted that on December 21, the EU’s Court of Justice ruled in favour of the ESL calling out UEFA and FIFA’s actions as “illegal”.

The ruling confirmed that UEFA can no longer stop the clubs from participating in the Super League as it did in the past, as that would be contrary to EU law nor can they stop Barca or Madrid to create a new club competition.

Barcelona to negotiate for Man City star despite €30 million price

FC Barcelona continue to separate their crucial players from those that are surplus to requirements. While certain stars are clearly underperforming this season, there are also those without whom this Barcelona team would utterly fail. The club hopes to keep their ties strong to such players, given their importance.

However, not all such stars are already permanent players for Barcelona. While most of the side is contracted to the club for several years, there are also those currently in Barça who do not have much time left. As such, figuring out their future is of vital necessity.

One player whose future appears to be more or less decided is Joao Cancelo. On loan from Manchester City, the Portuguese fullback has been a true revelation for Barcelona. His offensive creativity and his devotion to the club have both been great assets for Xavi this season.

His quality is also exemplified by his versatility. While he naturally gives Barcelona an extra edge as a right-back, he is also capable of playing other positions. At times, he has even been deployed as a right-winger and a left-back this season. Moreover, it seems that Xavi truly trusts him, with Cancelo having the most minutes in the team this season behind only Ilkay Gundogan.

With this amount of trust, quality, and versatility, Cancelo’s stay is considered a must within Barcelona. While there is no option to extend the loan it seems, Barça are rather willing to negotiate his permanent stay.

Kylian Mbappe Close To FC Barcelona Transfer After Real Madrid Pulls Out, Reports Mundo Deportivo

Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe is now closer to joining FC Barcelona than bitter rivals Real Madrid after they pulled out of the race to sign him as a reward to the Catalans for remaining with them in the European Super League project, according to Mundo Deportivo.

Madrid courted the Frenchman as a teenager before he ditched them to join PSG from Monaco in 2017.

In mid-2022, it appeared as though the World Cup winner would make the switch from the French capital to its Spanish counterpart only for Mbappe to have a change of heart and renew terms with his current Qatari employers.

As the ink dried on the fresh deal that helped Mbappe top Forbes' list of the World's Highest-Paid Soccer Players, PSG paraded their star player at the Parc des Princes with a special “Mbappe 2025” jersey.

This was meant to be a nod to how long Mbappe is tied down for, but his terms actually expire in June 2024 though he has the option of extending for another additional year should he so wish.

Radio station Cadena SER reported that Los Blancos pulled out of the race to sign Mbappe last month. Yet according to Mundo Deportivo, Barca is firmly in it and appears to be taking the lead as a dark horse.

President Joan Laporta has been buoyed by the boost the European Court of Justice (ECJ) appears to have given his club.

The ECJ ruled that European football governing body UEFAEFA 0.0% enjoys an unfair monopoly on continental football, which those behind the proposed breakaway European Super League (ESL) claimed a victory.

How does a 14-year-old kid once dubbed as the next Pelé end up being remembered more as a wasted talent who cost himself the opportunity to be America’s greatest soccer player ever? Well, sometimes the lens we’re looking through can be a bit distorted.

Barcelona target’s price tag creates conflict with Girona – report

Thus far, the Catalans have already incorporated Brazilian striker Vitor Roque. The 18-year-old forward comes all the way from Athletico Paranaense to begin his new journey with Barcelona. However, that is not where Xavi’s side hopes to stop their January recruitment.

One name in particular that they seem to have their eyes on is Aleix Garcia. Currently a captain of La Liga side Girona, he essentially belongs to a direct competitor. Yet, Barcelona believe that activating his release clause is an approachable method.

However, as is usually the case when dramatic sagas are involved, there is some miscommunication. According to Mundo Deportivo, Girona’s valuation of his release clause differs from the one that Barcelona insists upon.

In the case of Garcia’s current employers, they believe that the release clause is valued at around €20 million. On the other hand, Barcelona estimate it to be significantly lower.

While no exact value has been confirmed, MD suggests it could be in the €12 million range. Moreover, Barcelona also has the option of involving the likes of Pablo Torre or Oriol Romeu in a potential cash-plus player proposal.

Garcia himself, moreover, has previously added fuel to this growing fire. Publicly stating that his dream is to one day play for FC Barcelona, his comments created a lot of controversy. Girona’s head coach, Michel, was within the group of people not too pleased with the words of the club captain.

However, Barcelona see this as an opportunity. Signing Garcia would bolster a position where Barça lack specialists, while simultaneously weakening a direct rival. It remains to be seen how this saga progresses, but it is surely one to keep an eye out for.

Pedri names the one player he would sign for Barcelona

Barcelona midfielder Pedri has revealed he’d sign Manchester City goal machine Erling Haaland if he could bring in any player to the Camp Nou.

The youngster was chatting with Ibai Llanos when he was asked who would be his dream signing for Xavi’s side.

Here’s what he had to say: “I would sign Messi if he were 19 or 22 years old, but currently I would sign Haaland, he is a cyborg and scores a lot of goals. It is true that we have Lewandowski, but he is older, he will not be able to play until he is 60!”

Barcelona were regularly linked with a move for Haaland before he opted to leave Dortmund and move to Manchester City.

The Norwegian went on to win everything in his debut campaign with Pep Guardiola’s side, but there has already been speculation he could move on and that he does have a release clause in his contract.

Barcelona player ratings vs Las Palmas: Is Robert Lewandowski finished?! Another woeful display from veteran striker as Ferran Torres and Ilkay Gundogan rescue Xavi's side from embarrassing lose.

The reigning La Liga champions were atrocious in the first 45 but managed to fight back in the second half with some late drama

A scrappy goal from Ferran Torres and a moment of stupidity from Las Palmas' Daley Sinkgraven saw Barcelona secure a 2-1 win despite a massively underwhelming performance from Xavi's team. The visitors were woeful for large spells of the game, looking particularly lame and uninspired for the entirety of the first half before finally finding some bravery in the second period.

They fell behind just 12 minutes in when two of their former players combined to give Las Palmas the lead. Sandro Ramirez's low ball into the box found Munir El Haddadi, who beat Inaki Pena to it and slotted in, and the home side were worthy of the advantage.

Las Palmas' midfield overran their counterparts as Sergi Roberto and Ilkay Gundogan took too long to get into the game, though Frenkie de Jong was comfortable and played some useful balls behind the high back line. Unfortunately, Roberto Lewandowski, Raphinha and Torres had no luck until the latter rolled in the equaliser in the 55th minute.

20 year old Girona player a new target for Barcelona

FC Barcelona sent several young players out on loan this season in order to help them get important minutes in clubs with lesser pressure. One of these players whom the Catalans will be looking upon with significant interest is the youngster Pablo Torre.

The midfielder joined the La Liga side Girona on loan after one rather uneventful year at Barcelona. Torre understood that opportunities would be hard to come by in Xavi’s team, and decided to join Girona which offered an interesting project while also offering greater opportunities to get on the field.

However, the first half of the season saw Torre get on the field on very rare occasions. Michel did not count on him much, and his choice was justified by the form that his team showed with his first-choice midfielders.

But, as SPORT has noted, the Barcelona loanee is now getting increased chances under Michel and is almost a fixed starter for the joint leaders of La Liga.

Owing to his earlier lack of prominence in the team, Barcelona and Torre both were thinking of changing clubs in the winter. However, Girona believed in his talent, and their confidence in the player is now returning meaningful benefits, while Barcelona are also following him closely, and hoping that the player can continue growing.

If things keep on going as they are going now, Torre will return to Barcelona in the coming summer, and not go on another loan. He will get the opportunity to get a place for himself in the Barcelona first team. Xavi and the coaching staff believe the player is ready to make the jump, and can offer another interesting profile in the midfield.

Torre joined Barcelona as the former Sporting Director Jordi Cruyff made a bet on him when he was at Racing Santander. Barcelona always believed in his talent but knew they would have to take a patient approach with the player to let him grow and become a part of the first team.

Barcelona have been linked with the 17-year-old, with club side Djurgarden having already confirmed they’ve been in touch with the Catalan giants.

Here’s what Bergvall has had to say about his future:

“I know there is a lot of speculation, but I’m trying to focus on the national team and I’m happy to be here for the January tour. Now I’m a Djurgarden player,” he said.

“I am proud that my club is asking for so much money. But Djurgarden and my agents will take care of that. I don’t know where I will play next season.”

FC Barcelona is currently sponsored by Nike but Puma would like to end their relationship.

FC Barcelona will be offered more than $825 million to leave Nike, according to Mas Que Pelotas. Puma is preparing a 'historic' offer for FC Barcelona 'much higher' than the $824 million it pays Manchester City according to a report shared by SPORT.

If forthcoming and then accepted, the proposal would see the German brand break a near-26 year relationship between Nike and Barca while becoming the Blaugrana's official kit sponsor.

Nike and Barca have been linked to one another since 1998, with SPORT reporting that their current arrangement sees the Americans pay the Catalans a minimum of $114.75 (€105 million) a season which can reach as high as $169 million (€155 million) depending on how many of a number of incentives have been met.

Surprisingly, though, only $72 million (€66 million) corresponds to sponsorship income and this has some Barca directors convinced that Nike should be compensating the La Liga giants with more than they currently receive.

After separately reported interest from New Balance, which sponsors future Real Madrid star Endrick and Barca's Champions League group rivals Porto, Puma has allegedly thrown its hat in the ring as Barca looks to possibly get out of its current deal before 2028.

This has Nike worried, though for now the sports apparel behemoth remains calm because it is confident it has protection from a series of clauses that mean Barca cannot sever ties easily.

That doesn't mean Barca is prohibited from shopping around, however, and according to the popular YouTube channel Mas Que Pelotas which covers the club, Puma would offer Barca a contract "much higher" than the one it has with PremierPINC 0.0% League kings Manchester City.
