Rain saw the first day of the first test between New Zealand and Pakistan canned in Christchurch on Thursday - but that didn't stop the tourists from getting out on the field.

Only this time, they weren't so interested in bowling and fielding, but rather passing and shooting.

With the opening day of the first test delayed by the weather, the visitors helped themselves to a game of football at the Hagley Oval, as they waited for the game to begin.

Alas, while Yasir Shah and co. may have enjoyed a kick around, they were eventually left to rue the weather, with Day One eventually scrapped due to the conditions.

The covers were eventually put on as the groundsmen got to work, with action at the Hagley Oval now expected to get underway on Friday.

And when the covers do come off, Black Caps batting coach Craig McMillan is expecting testing conditions.

"I think with it [pitch] being under cover for today with the rain about, certainly that first session tomorrow is going to be very challenging," McMillan said.

"You only have to look at the colour of the pitch to know that both sets of fast bowlers are licking their lips and are pretty excited by what's on offering.

"Hopefully, though, there is enough movement for a couple of days so that it's not so dependant that whoever wins the toss has quite a big advantage and it flattens out quick."

Some good pics there! Messi showing his skills for sure.

Wahab's wrist isn't locked properly. He cant flick it like that, you know.

Ok this wrist locking joke in getting repetitive now :ashwin

Wahab doing that thing where we try to throw with our weaker arm, or kick with our weaker foot, and end up looking like idiots :))

For once i thought what a decent picture of Wahab and then I scrolled down :mv

England will no longer play football in warm-ups before matches

England's cricket team will no longer play football during training sessions or as a warm-up before matches.

Opener Rory Burns was ruled out of the rest of the Test series in South Africa after injuring his ankle playing football in training on Thursday.

England director of cricket Ashley Giles previously said he thought playing football was too dangerous.

But he agreed to review it after last year's World Cup after senior players said it was important for team spirit.

Giles previously banned Warwickshire players from playing football while he was director of cricket at the county.

The England and Wales Cricket Board said no directive instructing them to ban football has been sent to the counties at this stage.

It will be up to the counties to decide if they still want to use the game as part of their routines.

In October 2018, England wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow also sustained an ankle injury playing football and missed the start of the Test series against Sri Lanka.

It baffles me to this day that how can teams play football in order to warm-up. These players aren't trained to play football so the risk is associated with it is even higher! Why not do other countless exercises to warm up?!

How does one be trained to play football. Football is played in every part of the globe. From as young as 5 right up to 50. You don't need to be professionally trained to have a kick about.

England tour of Sri Lanka 2020 (2 Tests)

England opener Rory Burns is likely to miss the Sri Lanka series in March with the ankle injury which ended his tour of South Africa.

The 29-year-old suffered ligament damage to his left ankle while playing football during practice before the ongoing second Test in Cape Town.

He will see a specialist next week to determine if he needs surgery.

Keaton Jennings is the leading contender to replace Burns for the two-Test series starting on 19 March.

England have yet to decide whether to call up a replacement for Burns for the final two Tests of the current series, which South Africa lead 1-0.

National selector Ed Smith has arrived in Cape Town and will discuss the options with head coach Chris Silverwood.

Burns, who top-scored for England with 84 in the first-Test defeat in Centurion, averages 33.75 in 15 Tests.

England have since banned playing football during practice.

Jennings averages 25.19 from 17 Tests since making a century on debut in India in 2016.

Opening with Burns, he scored 233 runs at 46.60 in England's 3-0 series win in Sri Lanka in 2018, including an unbeaten 146 in the first Test in Galle.

England opening batsman Rory Burns has undergone successful surgery on ruptured ligaments in his left ankle.

Surgery took place in London on Monday afternoon. The Surrey captain is expected to be out of action for up to four months.

He will miss England’s Test tour of Sri Lanka in March and is aiming to return to play with Surrey in the County Championship at the beginning of the 2020 season in April.

Burns sustained the injury in warm-up during the final practice ahead of the second Test match in Cape Town last Thursday, January 2 2020.

Are you seriously asking that question? So, one can kick a ball and call himself a footballer? What does the popularity of the sport got to do with anything?

The point was that if you aren't professionally trained in the sport, the risk of getting injured is greater because you likely aren't following best practices. So, to me, cricketers warming up with football doesn't make sense at all.

This ridiculous practice of cricketers playing football for warmup needs to end. As copycats, we picked up on it because the likes of England but they are going to end this nonsense now.

football is a fun way to warm up, gets all the body parts active and warm quicker than most exercises. Now if you look at the number of cricketers that play football to warm up vs the number of players getting injured in the warm-up the numbers will be minuscule, less than 5%, more cricketers would probably be injured doing cricket related warm ups in the same period. Injuries are part and parcel in sport, i remember Glenn Mcgrath stepping on a cricket ball and injuring himself before an important ashes match, shall we ban cricket balls in training as well now? I think you just need to exercise caution, but ridiculous to completely ban.

So why are they doing this again?
