[PICTURES] PSL 2020 : Opening Ceremony at the National Stadium Karachi

This is the first major tournament in conservative Pakistan for a long time, give it time, what do you guys expect the crowd to do, run around topless shouting and screaming?

oh bhai, karachites are known for the enjoying music concert since long time. this is pure mismanagement form PCB side.

oh my God this is bad Karachi walon, Rahat put so much effort in his song and when he asks for appreciation there was not a single clapping

Just get on with the match

Poor stuff

IPL has scrapped the opening cermony because of being wastage of money

Y'all please think, how would such profound silence be possible with this many people gathered. Its an issue with the mic or sound system or whatever. They've occasionally turned the crown volume up and then down again.

they said they will show trophy on VR ... we didnt see it on our TV screen. is that also fault of karachites ?

Crowd not even applauding, forget making noise. Even they can see through the farce.

Match was supposed to start at 9. They'll need 30 mins atleast to clear the ground. Peak incompetency!

People keep on blaming the crowd, but it has happened many times with productions in Pakistan that our engineers/producers never seem to be able to properly get the audio from the crowd so it always seems dead. It happens routinely with cricket matches broadcast from Pakistan.

Just a disjointed effort. Should have started with something on a smaller, more manageable scale and then built from there.

Some pretty impressive scenes and and lights.

As mentioned earlier this PSL is gonna be amazing, National stadium Karachi is packed and Karachi isnt even playing today. Expecting packed houses in all cities for most of the matches. Wont be surprised if the day matches on Friday double headers are packed as well.

Ali azmat on center stage and we cant see him on tv screen. how the hell crowd will see him in the ground ?

why Pakistan still clinging to has beens like Ali Azmat?

Rumman Rais on big screen " Karachi talian to bajayo"
Dead silence in crowd:D

I hope you are not taking a dig at the energy of the crowd.
It is quite obviously an audio issue. They dont seem to have mics for the crowd.
Clips circulating on social media taken by people actually show that the noise is deafening.

The lighting is good.

Sound system is pathetic.

Hosts and engagement with the audience even more pathetic.

Entertainment and fun factor is not there at all.

Are we here to just enjoy the lighting show?

There's no microphone inside the crowd to pick up noise and chants lol.

Money absolutely wasted, as the hosting and entertainment factor is extremely poorly organized.

Everyone wants this torture to end. Twitter in a meltdown as well.

Organizers tayyar nahi thay.

Or just another case of classic incompetency. Wasted millions of rupees on this torture.

Who was given a contract for this? This company must be banned and the person awarding contract fired from the PSL or the PCB.

Do people actually think Karachi walay are deliberately sitting there with 'fingers on their lips' :)))

It is quite obviously a sound issue. The actual noise is deafening. It is virtually impossible to keep such a large amount of awaam so eerily quiet.

They're tired of this pathetic excuse of a ceremony as well.

But yes, there's no freaking mic in the crowd.

Just one of the endless things gone wrong in a poorly organized torture show. Millions wasted.

I am not watching the ceremony but the negativity on here is unreal.

Their seem to be a lot of depressing people on this forum. How about looking at the glass half full rather than empty for once.

This is the first opening ceremony for the tournament in Pakistan, on top of that the whole tournament is being held in Pakistan. That is a reason to rejoice and feel positive about. Opening ceremonies should be taken with a pinch of salt. I remember USA 94. Nobody could hear Diana Ross singing !

We really need to cheer up as individuals and as a community. To much negativity is never good.

On that note " let the games begin".

Thanks for this post! a lot people are just living to complain about anything no matter what. They want pakistan to be be number 1 and do everything perfectly by tomorrow, pakistan has some of the most impatient fans that I have ever seen in my life and I basically follow every major sport there is. Specially people on the Pakpassion forums, go through any post you will find 70% negative comments just berating about stuff.

Bashing, criticize, bashing, criticize and bashing that's what our masses and ppers are experts at.

my left ear is not working properly. Someone please take off This Alam guy. He is such a torture.

This thread is a clear depiction of how difficult it is to satisfy fans. Lighting and firework has been impressive and stadium is jam packed, what else are we expecting? Maybe flying stadium? :faf

Yes the performances could have been linked in some way but it isnt as big an issue as some are making it out to be.

there are many of the sadists here.... they only growl and nothing else... dont know who told them its cool to bash their own country... in reality its pathatic

having said all that, i think PCB made a blunder of doing it in a stadium. the stadium looks decently full but the crowd can never be engaged on this big a venue.. should have done it in Al-Hamra open air theater (for people of lahore and pakistan will know what i mean... smaller place, crowd noise will be out of the roof)

but PCB will learn.. will take time.. but thts fine... its just the beginning for them... it will turn to improve

Fair point brother . But I’m sure most opening ceremonies take place at the stadium . Main reference point being the IPL. But yeh there’s always room for improvement.

I was just completely annoyed with the negativity hence my previous post . We really need to brighten up .

I second you my friend.

They're tired of this pathetic excuse of a ceremony as well.

But yes, there's no freaking mic in the crowd.

Just one of the endless things gone wrong in a poorly organized torture show. Millions wasted.

It isn't the best ceremony out there but one cant throw shade at the crowd under that guise. They are visibly cheering and enjoying but no proper mic to relay that.

Not true. Less than 10% people in the stands were clapping even after the performances. Can't believe how apologists want to explain this away by say "Mic issue".

Thanks brother . We in general are very impatient on this forum . Not realistic and to superficial and negative .

Here to watch the match. I hope everything goes well and there aren't any problems when the game begins.

This should be it for PSL opening ceremonies for future PSL's.

This should be the first and last one in Pakistan.

Rather use all the money spent to organise all this into getting the grounds in better shapes and making the facilities better for those coming into the ground and those watching on tv's.

This is a result of creepy host + disjointed performances + bad lightning for attendees and NO mic for audience voice. Its clearly mismanagement on the part of the PCB and some people here are trying to sell their ANTI-KARACHI MANJAN.

Karachi walay itni khamoshi se moulvi sahib ka bayan nahi sunte to full stadium crowd puri ceremony mein itna khamosh kese beth sakta hai.

You must have quickly counted the total amount of people present, then the amount of people clapping and then whipped out your calculator to do the necessary calculations. Kudos to the camera man for focusing on the crowd long enough so that you could do that.

Please do use your common sense. Do you actually think that the crowd could have been so quiet. Fireworks and songs and just the atmosphere. Adrenaline kicks in whether you are a Karaachite or Lahori or whatever. Even 6 graders make more noise in their math class then the noise heard on TV.

Absolutely can not believe some people.
After Sarfaraz came on and motivated people there was eerie silence on TV. Do they actually think people would have been this quiet. Nobody is. Some people will go to any lengths to make this a karachi vs xyz thing when its clearly an audio issue.

yeah, I think its better to not have opening ceremony if you would be so incompetent in managing it

danny on the center of the pitch and we can hear the noise of the people from the ground on tv screen. now how about that ? where the noise suddenly comes from ? :)

Just scrap the opening ceremony like IPL Less money spent on this clown fest PSL the better.

I guess the 'munaagement' also stopped people from attending test matches recently held in Karachi.

"Gormint ka qisoor hai sara"

Ok no more of of this please - dont want to delete and warn people

The opening ceremony of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2020 — the first edition to take place entirely on home ground — took place at Karachi’s National Stadium on Thursday.

Accompanied by a vibrant fireworks display in the background, Ali Azmat, Arif Lohar, Haroon and Asim Azhar, concluded the festivities with an explosive performance of the PSL 2020 anthem Tayyar Hain, before clearing the field for the first match of the tournament between the Quetta Gladiators and Islamabad United.

The show began with the national anthem, before a small army of drummers and trumpeters, dressed in the national colours, kicked the ceremony into high gear by performing an instrumental version of the official PSL 2020 anthem.

Taking the stage after the performance, singer Fakhre Alam invited Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah to say a few words.

Congratulating the people of Karachi, the chief minister stated that in the past, he had asked the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to stage at least a single match in Karachi.

"But it was not possible at the time," he said, adding that the credit for the opening ceremony goes entirely to the people of Karachi. Thanking the PCB, he called for the people to show the world the true spirit of Karachi.

Meanwhile, PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani stated that in 2019 the board had promised that the entirety of the tournament will be staged in Pakistan, and today the board has fulfilled that promise.

"Next year, we will try to include Peshawar in the league," he said, adding that the entire credit for the league goes to cricket lovers residing in Pakistan.

Thanking the provincial governments of Punjab and Sindh, as well as law enforcement agencies, the chairman said that none of this would have been possible without their cooperation.

Mani also welcomed foreign players to the country, and called on the people to send a message to the world that "Pakistan is ready".

The first performance of the night, a dazzling display of local talent and tradition, was a Sufi medley featuring singer Sanam Marvi, qawwals Fareed Ayaz and Abu Mohammad, and the band Soch.

Taking the stage, pop singer Sajjad Ali performed a mashup of his greatest hits, including Babia and Soni Lag Di, to a packed stadium.

Taking things up a notch, Aima Baig, accompanied by performers brandishing umbrellas decked with neon lights, won the crowd over with her upbeat song.

Following these performances, Fakhre Alam called the representatives of all the PSL teams, including "honorary" Pakistani Darren Sammy, to the stage to take an oath to "follow and respect the rules of the league and to play with respect and integrity, endeavouring to serve as role models for people around the world".

Following the oath, singer Abrarul Haq, dubbed the "undisputed king of bhangra" by the hosts, had the crowd on their feet as he jumped off the stage onto an awaiting rickshaw-type vehicle, urging the people to show their enthusiasm.

But, perhaps the most awaited performance of the night was that of qawwal Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, who did exactly what he does best by belting his heart out in front of an adoring crowd.

The tournament will be the biggest draw in the country for the next four weeks.

Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi and Multan will share 34 matches featuring the six franchise-based teams. The remaining four sides are the 2017 winners Peshawar Zalmi, Karachi Kings, Lahore Qalandars and Multan Sultans.

What a shambles.

Absolute farce and waste of money.

PCB could have used this money to upgrade a stadium for first class cricket

Pathetic theme song, crappy trophy and to top all of this a shoddy opening ceremony.

Have to say Ehsan Mani and Wasim Khan really SUCK in their decisionmaking. They are finding new ways to humiliate Pakistan. If you are producing an opening ceremony you are showcasing talent of your country and the whole world is watching. Who the hell arranged this.

Whoever arranged or directed this should be exposed and FIRED. Same old dance troupe bakwaas with too much Lights and Hologram. Apart from the hologram show showcasing provinces it was a dud of a performance. Can't believe acountry that produced people like Moin Akhtar and Umar Sharif, have a superb theatre legacy in Karachi can't find an mc or host.

Btw who was the host, relative of a PCB boss? Same thing happened in opening ceremony of PSL 1 which was held in Dubai a nervous guy hosting the show literally destroyed the whole ceremony.

Wasim Khan cannot find an event host in entertainment capital of Pakistan from where 20+ channels operate? SHAME

An Indian national by the name of Shubhra Bhardwaj was paid a fortune to direct (or ruin) PSL opening ceremony by PCB.

There are way better event management companies by Pakistanis and British Pakistanis who plan million pound events but Wasim Khan could not find a single one to help arrange this event which is seen by mllions around the world.

While some live mistakes can be forgiven as it's the first time hosting a ceremony in Pakistan, they should at least edit the video before uploading it to the YouTube page.

Let them be, these small minded people with small other bits, feel big by belittling the efforts of others. Clearly a reflection of their society, upbringing and regressive mindset.

Sound quality was so poor. This opening ceremony was a mess and it was too long for my liking. :jk

Rs 210 million was spent on this crap ,and people paid for the tickets. It wasn't free. Those people deserve better. You have no regard for people who bought these tickets and surely PCB officals didn't actually spend Rs210 million on this joke of a event, just on paper and must be in the pockets of PCB officals :)

pathetic opening ceremony, poor broadcast and this fake forced use of vuvuzelas just shows how incompetent people are running PCB. Pathetic.

210 million for PSL opening cermoney

Domestic cricketers monthly retainers is 86.4 million(annually). Some jokers here say that PCB have no money hence can't pay domestic cricketer more :)))

Need to scrap such terrible ideas.

This is not the Olympic where people are actually interested in the opening ceremony. The money should be spent on cricketers, stadiums, infrastructure, and low-paid employees.

Hopefully profits surge after this tournament and we can upgrade these small stadiums. Problem is can't even sell out these small ones. 25k people have to attend for a sell out. In a country of 210 million people you can't sell out this stadium for every match?

I believe the host has been getting a lot of stick for his part in this shambles.

Those at the PSL should also be held accountable.

The fallout from the disaster Psl opening ceremony.

PCB under fire for hiring indian nationals and accused of damaging Pakistani brand.

#PCBJawabdo trending since yesterday with some shocking facts. Singer Asim Azhar who is one of the singers of PSL theme song Tayyar hain was angry he was not allowed to sing part of the song.

PCB's Indian broadcast partner Tower Sports has not been able to provide at minimum quality coverage.

PCB's contract with Tower sports will come under scrutiny.

I have heared the host saying on Social media that PCB parted away from Ali Zafar regarding PSL due to Meesha Shafi case:faf

So the PCB realize that the opening ceremony as expressed in the latest release:

Hosting of any opening ceremony presents its own challenges. While a number of Pakistan cricket fans have been vocal in their disapproval about elements of the ceremony, a sizeable number of followers were pleased with the display. Being an evolving organisation, the PCB is keen to learn from these experiences to further improve the quality of events in the future.

Pakistani Twitterati and media are seeing an Indian conspiracy in the disastrous opening ceremony of the 5th edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL). The opening ceremony was billed as one of the biggest cultural extravagances ever held in the country, but the ceremony in Karachi turned out to be a damp squib. Fingers were pointed at the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for overlooking local talent and hiring Shubhra Bharadwaj of Ferriswheel Entertainment, a Mumbai-based event management company, reportedly at whopping Rs 21 crore.

Many Pakistani TV anchors and former cricketers questioned the rationale behind hiring an Indian firm at a time India has banned Pakistani cricketers from IPL and Pakistani actors, singers and other performers are not allowed to work there.

“At a time when there is no trade between the two. They have banned our artists and we have banned Indian films and TV dramas, why an Indian firm was hired for a ‘national event’? asked TV anchor Mubasher Lucman.

He asked in what capacity Shubhra Bharadwaj and her 80-member crew has come to Pakistan? Are they on visit visa or working visa? Will they pay on tax on the money they will be getting from the PCB? he asked.

One TV anchor even questioned whether the glitches were accidental or a part of a well-thought-out conspiracy to show Pakistan in poor light.

He said hosting the PSL in Pakistan will boost the image of the country and give new life to cricket in Pakistan. However, the PCB hired an Indian for this work and ‘she has shown her work’ (aur unhone apna kam dikha diya) by making this event a big flop. Lucman said there should be an inquiry into the entire fiasco and PCB chief Eshan Mani should be hauled over the coals.

Right from the word go, it was full of glitches and blunders. Before the show, it was announced that more than 350 artists, including top Pakistani singers, will perform live. Instead, every singer lip-synced on the stage, which was marred by glitches like songs cut short midway. Some were left clueless on the stage with the wrong clip coming on the giant screen.

Famous Pakistani pop star Ali Azmat was livid and lashed out at the PSL organisers for mismanagement and chaos on the stage. Clippings of songs of Ali and many other singers were cut short without informing them. An angry Ali not only confronted the organisers in public but also told a TV channel that it was the duty of the management to inform artists if their parts were cut so that they could prepare for it.

The biggest gaffe of the night was little known Ahmed Godil, who was asked to host the main ceremony. The social media roasted Godil for his lacklustre performance in which he tried to mimic Imran Khan. Heavily trolled on Twitter, Godil clarified he was hired as ‘ground host’ but was suddenly asked to come onto the stage as the crowd was getting bored and restless. Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar said: “I didn’t understand the [concept] of the opening ceremony. I didn’t see any people, the stage was too far away. Was it a bad ceremony?”

Need to do away with the whole thing. A quick 15 minute thing with national anthem, maybe an air force flyover, possibly honor 1 former legend every year into a "Pakistan Cricket Hall of Fame" along with a trophy unveiling and get on with the first match. Promote the cricket and let that be the star.
