Cricket action continues in Quetta on Saturday

Lahore, 27 September 2019:

Cricketing action will continue in Quetta as Balochistan hosts Central Punjab at the picturesque Bugti Stadium in the third round of the four-day first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, which commences on Saturday.

Bolstered by their win against Northern at Faisalabad’s Iqbal Stadium in the second round, the Azhar Ali-led side is perched at the top of the points table.

They will be faced by an in-form bowling attack – spearheaded by Yasir Shah, the leading wicket-taker after the first two rounds with 10 scalps – that skittled out Southern Punjab twice at the same venue in the last round.

It will, however, take some effort to put the shackles on Kamran Akmal, whose 170-ball 157 helped Central Punjab put a daunting 433 all-out in the first innings, which eventually anchored the victory.

Rawalpindi will host its first four-day Quaid-e-Azam Trophy match of the season when Northern, placed bottom on the points table, hosts Sindh at the KRL Stadium.

After a mammoth defeat by an innings and 100 runs margin against Central Punjab at Faisalabad’s Iqbal Stadium in the second round – this being the only first-class match of the season to date to give a result – the Umar Amin-led side will hope to exploit the home advantage and make notable gains in the points table.

After a brilliant 174, Asad Shafiq-led Sindh will look towards opener Omair Bin Yousuf to lay another solid foundation in what will be their first away match of the season. Coming into the match, Northern will also be wary of Fawad Alam after his unbeaten 138-ball 100 in the lower-order put Sindh in a commanding position in their last round contest against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa returns to Abbottabad, but this time as an away team, to play Southern Punjab. This match will be live-streamed on the PCB YouTube channel.

Their captain Sahibzada Farhan will hope Ashfaq Ahmed, who has scored two centuries in as many games so far, Adil Amin, who starred against Sindh with a score of 70 and a five for 81 with the ball, and centurion of the previous match Zohaib Khan will emulate their performances at the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium.

After Sami Aslam’s magnificent double-century in the first round and notable performances from Imran Rafiq, Aamir Yamin, Bilawal Bhatti and Mohammad Irfan (slow left-arm) in the second round, Southern Punjab will be hoping to turn individual performances into a collective team effort.

The Shan Masood-led team has been the only touring team to have contested the toss – in the first round match against Central Punjab at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium. They, however, will hope Khyber Pakhtunkhwa follow their suit so they have a shot at deciding how to commence the game.

Northern and Sindh team sheets please?

Liking the new score graphic. Superb picture quality too as Abbottabad looks a treat, good that PCB are still working on their broadcasts.

At least Rauf is playing but Wasim is clueless re batsmen it seems.

Also, beyond me how Sameen Gul isn't playing; he was KP's best bowler last game.

Finally Haris Rauf is in the starting 11.

And did Zeeshan Malik go up from 2nd XI to 1st XI? I dont believe he was in the Northen 1st XI team in the two previous matches (good to see though)

Zeeshan was 12th man last game. Before that, he had been with the 2nd XI squad.

Wasim is clueless, otherwise he would play ZM ahead of the dross that is playing.

Honestly someone like afaq raheem looks like a tailender. Zeeshan is miles better then that rubbish at least. It has taken them 3 game to play Haris rauf.

From the match at Quetta:

<iframe src="https://streamable.com/s/ayy2w/vwkrxa" width="640" height="360" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; fullscreen" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Look people are actually engaging in First Class cricket ! And it's great for the cricket starved people of Quetta to see their heroes.

See what happens when you actually promote the tournament, and regionalise the system. Nobody wants to watch WAPDA-UBL garbage. Brilliant from PCB.

Farhan and Israrullah hit half-centuries in rain-affected opening day in Abbottabad

Lahore, 28 September 2019:

Openers Sahibzada Farhan and Israrullah hit their maiden half-centuries of the 2019-20 season as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa reached 126 for no loss on a shortened opening day of the four-day first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy fixture against Southern Punjab at the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium on Saturday.

Farhan was batting on 63 and Israrullah was 52 not out after early morning showers and wet field had delayed the start of the match by 150 minutes before late afternoon rain brought an early closure, meaning only 32.5 overs of play was possible. This was after Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had won the toss and elected to make first use of the wicket.

Farhan, who scored 29 in the opener against Northern and then managed three in his only innings against Sindh, has faced 104 balls and hit 11 exquisite fours.

Israrullah, who missed the opener but played against Sindh and scored two, has received 99 deliveries off which seven have been converted into fours.

Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Abbas was in action and ended with figures of 8-1-21-0. Another Test fast bowler, Bilawal Bhatti, had figures of 6-0-35-0

Scores in brief:

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 126-0, 32.5 overs (Sahibzada Farhan 63 not out, Israrullah 52 not out)

Azhar, Salman centuries put Central Punjab in commanding position

Lahore, 28 September 2019:

Solid centuries by Central Punjab’s openers had the visitors on 338 for five against Balochistan when stumps were called on day one of the four-day first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy round three match at Quetta’s Bugti Stadium.

Azhar Ali’s 165-ball 123, studded with 20 fours, was his second century on the trot as the Central Punjab captain had scored 155 in his side’s mammoth win by an innings and 100 runs against Northern at the Iqbal Stadium, Faisalabad.

The day, however, belonged to Salman Butt, who was unbeaten on 152. The opener had received 285 balls of which 24 were dispatched for fours.

The two stitched an opening stand of 237 runs as Central Punjab, after opting for a toss, were put into bat.

Once Azhar was back in the pavilion, Central Punjab lost three wickets 17 runs.

Kamran Akmal’s 28-ball 24, which included three fours and a six, put a halt on the collapse.

Leg-spinner Yasir Shah led the Balochistan’s bowling as he bowled 32 overs and picked up the crucial wickets of Azhar and Usman Salahuddin.

Umar Gul, Khurram Shehzad and Ammad Butt picked up a wicket each.

All-rounder Zafar Gohar (11) batted alongside Salman when stumps were drawn.

The Sunday morning promises to be an exciting one. Already on top of the points table with 35 points, Central Punjab have a shot at collecting maximum batting points by crossing the 400-run mark in the next 24 overs. The touring party has already bagged three batting points.

Balochistan, who have collected one bowling point in the innings thus far, will look to pick all 10 wickets in 110 overs to bag all three points available.

Scores in brief:

Central Punjab 338-5, 86 overs (Salman Butt 152 not out, Azhar Ali 123, Kamran Akmal 24; Yasir Shah 2-103)

Northern in trouble against Sindh

Rawalpindi, 28 September 2019:

Northern were in trouble at 86 for the loss of three wickets against Sindh at the close of the rain-shortened opening day’s play in the four-day Quaid-e-Azam Trophy match at the KRL Stadium on Saturday.

Overnight and early morning rain meant only 40 overs were possible after the entire opening two sessions were lost as the third round fixture began at 2.45pm.

The toss was not contested as Sindh captain Asad Shafiq elected to bowl first.

When the stumps were drawn for the day, Rohail Nazir was batting on 17 and Ali Sarfraz on three.

Afaq Raheem (19) and Haider Ali (26) provided Northern a decent start of 44 runs before both were sent packing in the space of 14 runs

Northern suffered another major blow when their captain Umar Amin (17) was run out with the team’s score reading 71.

Right-arm pace bowler Tabish Khan and left-arm spinner Kashif Bhatti claimed a wicket apiece for 21 and 12 runs, respectively.

Northern are lying at the bottom of the six-team chart with 11 points after the first two rounds. Sindh are third on 20 points.

Scores in brief:

Northern 86-3, 40 overs (Haider Ali 26; Tabish Khan 1-21, Kashif Bhatti 1-13)

Tanvir over Waqas, that too as VC?!

Sameen better be injured, otherwise that exclusion is criminal.

Zafar can't be ignored anymore, he is a must for the Sri Lanka test series now, they should also take him to Australia, but I doubt they'll need him there.

His failure to progress with the bat had been troubling me. But now you have your second spinner for the UAE.

Still not convinced about his bowling. Don't see him as an international spinner but let's hope you guys are right.

It’s actually a joke someone like nawaz was played as a 2nd spinner in Tests ahead of Gohar. The way Gohar sets up as a bat it’s pretty clear he has a lot potential, and he’s miles ahead with the ball compared to Nawaz.

Lahore, 29 September 2019:

Unseasonal rains continued to have the last laugh in Abbottabad where only 15.1 overs play was possible on day two of the four-day first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy fixture between Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Southern Punjab.

After 32.5 overs’ play was possible on Saturday, 176 overs of cricket have been lost between second-placed Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and fourth-placed South Punjab to date, while weather forecast for the remaining two days is also not very encouraging.

On Sunday, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa moved from 126 for no wicket to 174 for the loss of Sahibzada Farhan, who fell to Bilawal Bhatti after adding 15 runs to his overnight score of 63.

However, Israrullah progressed from 52 not out to 77 not out, while Ashfaq Ahmed was the other batsman at the crease on seven.

Scores in brief:

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 176-1, 48 overs (Israrullah 77 not out, Sahibzada Farhan 78, Ashfaq Ahmed seven not out)

Rohail Nazir and Hammad Azam scored half-centuries as Northern reached 271 for the loss of nine wickets on the second day of their first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy match against Sindh at the KRL Stadium on Sunday.

Only 40 overs were possible on Saturday and it was another curtailed day on Sunday. Play had to be stopped after just one over in the first session because of wet outfield. The proceedings then resumed at around 12:40pm and only 61.4 overs were bowled.

Northern began the day at their overnight score of 86-3 in the first innings. They kept losing wickets at regular intervals with Sindh bowlers bowling tidy spells.

Besides wicketkeeper-batsman Rohail Nazir and all-rounder Hammad Azam, no other batsmen put up a fight.

Resuming at his overnight score of 17, Pakistan U19 captain Rohail went on to make 67. This was the second half century of his young first-class career. The right-handed batsman hit 12 boundaries and faced 120 balls.

Rohail also stitched a fifth-wicket partnership of 57 runs with Umer Waheed (35).

Hammad cracked five fours and two sixes in his 117-ball 58, which was the right-handed all-rounder’s 19th half century at this level.

At the close of the second day’s play, Nauman Ali was batting on 21 not out while Haris Rauf was yet to open his account.

Left-arm spinner Kashif Bhatti was the pick of Sindh bowlers, taking three wickets for 51 runs in 24.4 overs. Pace bowlers Sohail Khan and Tabish Khan claimed two scalps each for 60 and 70 runs, respectively

Scores in brief:

Northern 271-9, 101.4 overs (Rohail Nazir 67, Hammad Azam 58, Umer Waheed 35, Haider Ali 26; Kashif Bhatti 3-51, Sohail Khan 2-60, Tabish Khan 2-70).

Central Punjab were in firm control of their round three four-day first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy fixture at Quetta’s Bugti Stadium as they had Balochistan at 119 for five at the close of the second day’s play after putting up 521 for six declared.

The visitors’ daunting first innings score came on the back of a fantastic double-century by Salman Butt – who scored 237 runs off 376 balls, adding 85 runs to his overnight score. The left-handed opening batsman struck 35 fours in his 549-minute stay at the crease.

From the other end, Zafar Gohar registered his maiden first-class century, scoring an unbeaten 138-ball 100, studded with 14 fours and three sixes.

The two resumed the day for Central Punjab at 338 for five and knitted a 205-run stand, helping their side to bag all five batting points by surpassing the 400-run mark inside 110 overs. For removing five wickets till that stage, Balochistan bagged only one point.

Soon after Yasir Shah, who returned three for 163, got Salman’s wicket, Azhar Ali put the hosts into bat.

Balochistan failed to put up a strong fight from the onset of their reply as Azeem Ghumman, the centurion of the previous match, fell early. They lost three more wickets in a span of just six runs which had them reeling at 58 for four. The hosts lost another wicket 19 runs later.

Opener Imran Butt was the highest run-getter for Balochistan with 33 from 40 balls.

Right-arm fast-bowler Nasim Shah picked up two wickets, giving away only 22 runs in 10 overs. Waqas Maqsood, Ehsan Adil and Mohammad Saad picked up a wicket each.

When the stumps were drawn, Hussain Talat and Bismillah Khan batted at 21 and 23. The two face an arduous task to stage a recovery and save their side from follow-on – with their team trailing by 402 runs – when the play resumes on Monday.

Scores in brief:

Central Punjab 521-6d, 122.2 overs (Salman Butt 237, Azhar Ali 123, Zafar Gohar 100, Kamran Akmal 24; Yasir Shah 3-163)
