As England’s selectors convene to pick their squad for the limited‑overs matches against West Indies on Monday, chilling on a beach in Miami will be an opponent itching for them to include their highest-profile players and, in particular, his old foe Ben Stokes.

Should Stokes get the nod for the Twenty20 on 16 September and the five 50-over affairs that follow the Test series decider at Lord’s this week, and not be wrapped in cotton wool before the Ashes, it would reunite him with Marlon Samuels, a player never short of a word – or a salute – when they have met on a cricket field previously.

“With me coming to England, he should stay on the boundary when I’m batting, as far away as possible,” says an unprompted Samuels, who after playing in the Caribbean Premier League for St Lucia Stars in recent weeks, is taking a break in Florida before joining his international team-mates for the white‑ball end to their tour.

Having brought up the subject of where Stokes should field in response to an innocuous question about England’s strengths during our transatlantic call, the 36-year-old batsman – twice man of the final when West Indies won the 2012 and 2016 World T20 tournaments – is asked whether this means he is looking forward to resuming hostilities.

“As long as he keeps quiet,” comes the reply. “I won’t start anything, so if anything does happen, that means he has said something to me first. I’m going to come to England and be a good boy ... at least for the start of it.

“He wanted to take me on a couple of years ago [during England’s 2015 tour of the Caribbean, scene of the infamous salute]. He started something and I told him he better be prepared to finish it. But I saw him during the IPL this year and he didn’t say anything. I hope he can continue on that path. If not, I have things in place.”

Though these “things” are not elaborated upon, his words are couched with respect too, not least for the way Stokes recovered from his final-over manhandling by Carlos Brathwaite in the World T20 final last year – “He’s a tough cookie and I applaud him for that” – and England’s white-ball resurgence since the last World Cup overall.

Samuels, in his 17th year as an international cricketer, will play alongside his fellow Jamaican in Chris Gayle – “You got it wrong there, Chris Gayle is playing alongside me,” he fires back when it is put this way – following an amnesty by Cricket West Indies that is designed to bring their exiled Twenty20 globetrotters back into the fold.

It halts a hardline selection policy that left big names on the outside of a 50-over team which failed to make this summer’s Champions Trophy and, still sitting ninth in the rankings, will likely not make the 2019 World Cup automatically come the cut-off point on 30 September. A spot in next year’s qualifying tournament looms.

Gayle, 37, has not played one-day cricket since the 2015 World Cup but in the case of Samuels it ends a shorter hiatus, having been missing since late last year. A spell in the Pakistan Super League left him without the requisite number of games in the Carribean’s Super 50 tournament and thus he became ineligible.

Is he happy to be returning? “No, I’m not very happy because I’ve been playing ODI cricket for the last few years then they come up with this rule of playing 10 [domestic] games to qualify to play – that never make sense. We need our best players. You have to bend the rule and compromise. You can’t treat everyone the same.

But at least he is back now, right? “Yeah but after damage. There should not be the damage in the first place, especially after the embarrassment of not being at the Champions Trophy and now a World Cup where we might not even be there. People around the world still love Caribbean cricket because we bring the flavour and history. We need to be in every tournament, no matter what.”

Samuels is nevertheless encouraged by the new West Indies regime, describing the director of cricket, Jimmy Adams, as a friend who is “cricket first”, head coach Stuart Law as a “nice individual” and the chief executive, Johnny Grave, “a man of his word”. And though he claims to be taking a break from Tests at present, Samuels is impressed – if not unsurprised – by Holder and Co’s prediction-defying win at Headingley last week.

“People were writing off the players but they are young, hungry and showing fight by winning a Test in tough conditions,” says Samuels. “West Indies are not on top and playing the best but the media is too critical, they need to give these youngsters a chance because not every player starts out at the top of their game.

“In history there are greats who started slow, and players who started fast and never last. It’s a game of glorious uncertainty and you have to give guys a chance to shape their destinies. Hopefully Jason and the boys can finish it off now.”

And his own hopes for the white-ball action that follows? “I love batting in England – I won the Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 2013 – and I’m coming to do my best and give 150%. I will look to play a big significant role for West Indies. It’s a bit on the cold side though – and I don’t even like to open my fridge.”

Marlon Samuels has fired another shot at Ben Stokes:

“With me coming to England, he should stay on the boundary when I’m batting, as far away as possible."

:))) It begins (again). Cannot wait for this series given WI will have some of their best limited overs players returning.

Stokes getting the treatment already :)) Sir Marlon am sure will show up for this series, he's a lazy guy who tends to thrive when it comes to high profile games or series he deems to be worthy of his standing :yk

It would mean more if Samuels had bothered to show up and help the test team.

He's a T20 maverick at best, has done jack all in other formats for the last decade or so!

In SA and Eng he averages 50+, last time he was here he had on hell of a tour in England as well; he loves playing against the English :stokes

Stokes is gobby but Samuels has no class. It's clever from him though because if Stokes gobs off one more time he gets banned.

Stokes is a true gentleman of the game and the classiest bloke out there, I nominate him for the spirit of cricket award this year

i also nominate him 4 the same award....
now he will definitely get that...

Stokes and Samuels are two sides of the same coin.

He's a T20 maverick at best, has done jack all in other formats for the last decade or so!

In Tests he rightly got booted but in ODIs his average and SR for the last five seasons have been very good:

http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/player/52983.html?class=2;template=results;type=batting

It's not like Windies are spoilt for choice when it comes to experienced, internationally proven middle-order batsmen so his recall is welcome. He didn't actually get dropped from the ODI team earlier this year for form-related issues but because of his participation in the PSL instead of the domestic Super50 tournament.

He needs to get into a habit of rotating the strike because it's not always that he's going to make up for his conservative starts

Can't wait for the battle to start. Samuels was one my fav WI player. Stokes might be unpopular among some section of fans but I like him as a batsman!

Marlon always rises to the occasion against Stokes, his banter should be accepted and encouraged.

Stokes isn't in the t20 squad- maybe they are worried he will pick up another demerit point. :yk2

Marlon Samuel is such a clean hitter. Love it when he's in full form.

i also nominate him 4 the same award....
now he will definitely get that...

Can I also join in the nomination ?? :ma

I think there should also be a 'rile up Stokes' award for every visiting and hosting team that plays England in future:yk

Windies need to rid of this clown immediately and get Hetmyer in. Trust in the young guns.

This so called clown was man of the match in 2 World T20 finals and played 2 gun knocks under immense pressure. Give credit where it's due.

Samuels should be dropped by the Windies from all formats. His atrociously slow batting severely hampered the Windies throughout this tournament.

Woke up on the wrong side of the bed today, it seems.

Warning: Abusive language… clearly.

Social media when you're a celebrity and drunk is a bad idea.

It's pointless to compare Stokes' and Samuels' cricketing achievements when we all know that a feud of this intensity can only be settled one on one. So the question to be asked is who would win a fistfight between these two?

I personally think Samuels would come out on top.

This is awful tbh

What is with some of the WI players and the disgusting ranting they do on social media?

Stokes would try to wrestle but Marlon would knock the hell outta stokes

Even though Marlon crossed the line (multiple times) but I just hate Stokes so I hope a real fist fight happen between the two and I'll be cheering Marlon

Marlon acts like floyd mayweather but without his money or talent

But still..

Don't drink and use social media at the same time is my advice to Marlon

If Marlon Samuels ever cries about the rest of the world not "taking a knee" for the Black Lives Matter movement or whatever, pull up these stories and show it to him.

Shocking response from Marlon Samuels, in response to some light hearted comments shared by Ben Stokes, especially in light of all the BLM stuff that has been going on.

Seems pretty clear they both do not like each other.

Former West Indies cricketer Marlon Samuels has come under fire for disgusting comments about the wife of superstar all-rounder Ben Stokes.

In August, Stokes left the English cricket squad during their Test series against Pakistan to be with his ill father in New Zealand.

Due to strict travel restrictions, the 29-year-old was forced into a 14-day quarantine before he could make contact with friends and family.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Stokes explained why he wouldn't wish the challenging experience on his worst enemy.

"You get off the plane, get your bag, walk out and get told what hotel to go to," Stokes said.

"There's no choice, it's pot luck whether you get a good hotel or not. The government have chosen certain hotels to be the quarantine hotels.

"I posted a few Instagram stories and some of the England boys were messaging me asking, 'What it's like?' and I was saying, 'It wasn't the most enjoyable thing you ever have to do, I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy'.

"I text my brother saying the same thing, and my brother asked, 'You wouldn't even do that to Marlon Samuels?'

"I said, 'No, it's that bad', - that's how tough it was."

Although Stokes' comments were obviously lighthearted, Samuels seemingly did not appreciate the banter.

In response, Samuels posted an explosive rant to Instagram, in which he appears to make sexual remarks about Stokes' wife.

"No white boy could diss me in the sports and no get back diss look at this b***h still thinking about me give me 14 days with you wife turn her into Jamaican in 14 seconds mate none of yall knows me that simple means it's my f***ing superior skin tone yall hate f*** you," Samuels posted on Tuesday.

Samuels' social media post was not well-received by the cricket community.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan tweeted: "This is appalling … we are trying to stamp out racism … A bit of banter by (Stokes) should not lead to this."

The rivalry between Stokes and Samuels was ignited during a Test series in 2015, when the West Indies batsman mocked the left-hander by saluting him following a dismissal.

The pair then butted heads again two years later during the unforgettable T20 World Cup Final, with a fierce argument erupting in the middle.

Samuels recently recounted the first confrontation on Instagram, claiming Stokes had been sledging him throughout the match.

"I remember this day like it was yesterday first time seeing Ben and he start cussing me when I reach about 50 and his teammates said, 'Ben stick to the plan don't speak to him because that's what he wants'. I made 100 lol," Samuels posted.

"Then it was his turn to bat and I salute him I also walk up to him and told him, 'Listen to your teammates because this what your starting will last a lifetime and you dare even call my name and dam well know how much hate in your heart towards me' lol some people just don't learn blessings a flow Ben."

Early on Wednesday, Samuels added more anti-Stokes posts to his Instagram account. He posted a news article of the England star being involved in a fight during a night out in Bristol in 2017 - which saw him charged but found not guilty of affray.

"No no no this can't be true Ben is such a nice guy he would never fight in the streets of England," Samuels posed sarcastically. "No way stop telling lies on Ben."

In another sarcastic post, again referencing a news article about Stokes' incident in Bristol, Samuels wrote: "Hello people is this your sweet little Ben that can't live without calling my name dam I don't believe Ben would do this s***.

"Lies lies he's such a nice guy plus he only tells me lovely stuff on the cricket field things I would never talk about because I am a boss and he's just sweet guy lol."

In a separate social media post, Samuels took aim at Australian cricket great Shane Warne, with whom he also has an unfortunate history.

"ICC cricketing world Ben b***h Stokes Shane b***h Warne and a few b***h West Indians cricketers … f*** with my army bigger and we richer," Samuels posted to Instagram.

Samuels and Warne infamously butted heads during a Big Bash League match in January 2013, when the leg-spinner accused the Jamaican of tugging on an opposition player's shirt while running between the wickets.

At one point in the ugly confrontation, Samuels threw his cricket bat in Warne's direction, prompting the umpires to intervene.

Shane Warne of the Melbourne Stars has a heated exchange with Marlon Samuels of the Melbourne Renegades.

After representing the West Indies in 71 Test matches, Samuels played his most recent international fixture in 2018.

Meanwhile, Stokes is currently competing in the Indian Premier League alongside Australia's Steve Smith in the Rajasthan Royals.

On Sunday evening, Stokes pummelled 107 not out against the Mumbai Indians in Abu Dhabi, his second century in T20 cricket.

Have a dig at stokes all you like but keep it within the realms of decency and respectability

Samuels has done himself no favours with that horrid post

This bizarre feud continues with Shane Warne commenting...

Now hes insulted homosexuals too

Why did Shane Warne need to get involved in this?

Why did Shane Warne need to get involved in this?

They had a pretty bad altercation in BBL so I think Warne didnt wanna miss this opportunity to take another jab at him.

Shane Warne still sour at Samuel’s Oscar acceptance speech at the World Cup final :)) :))

“I wanna dedicate this trophy to Shane Warne”

They had a pretty bad altercation in BBL so I think Warne didnt wanna miss this opportunity to take another jab at him.

Reason Warne responded was because of this
"ICC cricketing world Ben b***h Stokes Shane b***h Warne and a few b***h West Indians cricketers … f*** with my army bigger and we richer," Samuels posted to Instagram.

It seems that Samuel's isn't coping well with life after cricket. The guy is total idiot and his comments are not only disgusting but racist.

Lol Warne looks just as bad as Marlon somehow! Acts like he wants Marlon to seek help but adds a couple of low blows for no reason, barely masking clearly his real intention for the post.

You wouldn't think these are grown men arguing, lol.

Marlon's response was crude, no doubt, but Stokes had no business bringing up his name again. Both Stokes and Warne know that Marlon got the better of them and you can clearly see that they are salty.

Samuels is off the rocker here lol. I was shocked at how aggressively he responded to Ben Stokes who said something quite harmless IMO.

West Indies Marlon Samuels retires from all forms of cricket

West Indies batsman Marlon Samuels has retired from professional cricket. Samuels, who top-scored in both of their World T20 final victories, last played for West Indies in December 2018 against Bangladesh.

According to reports, Samuels had informed Cricket West Indies (CWI) about his retirement in June this year, confirmed CWI chief executive Johnny Grave. A key cog in Windies batting wheel, Samuels has been recently in the news for the wrong reasons.

Former Australia spinner Shane Warne in October had slammed Windies all-rounder Samuels for passing distasteful comments on him and England’s Ben Stokes. Earlier, Samuels in an Instagram story had abused both Stokes and Warne and the Windies all-rounder had also boasted of his superior skin tone. Samuels had also involved Stokes’ wife in his comments and this resulted in wide outrage over social media.

Samuels’ finest knock came in the 2012 T20 World Cup final in Colombo, when he launched an attack with his batting skills on premier bowlers Ajantha Mendis and Lasith Malinga to guide his side a win over Sri Lanka. Across formats, he scored 11,134 international runs including 17 centuries, and scalped 152 wickets.

He also represented several T20 franchises around the world later in his career, including Pune Warriors, Delhi Daredevils in Indian Premier League (IPL), and Melbourne Renegades in Big Bash League (BBL).

Just read the news that Marlon Samuels has retired from all professional cricket. Although overall not a great career, but to be the Man of the Match in two ICC World T20 Finals is some achievement.

That innings from the final in 2012 is the greatest T20I innings that I´ve ever seen, and I suppose that not too many would disagree with me. Unbelievable hitting off a high class bowler to turn around a match which seemed over by the 10-over mark. A dream innings! Well done Samuels! Have got great memories from that match.

I just came here to add that yesterday was eight years to the day when Samuels played that unbelievable innings! 7th October 2012, I strongly remember that day for some personal reasons - good reasons, mind you. :)
