Waqar Younis to hold bowlers camp in Lahore over weekend

Lahore, 18 October 2019:

With one eye on the series against Australia, Pakistan’s bowling coach Waqar Younis will hold a bowlers camp at the Gaddafi Stadium on Saturday and Sunday.

The national selection committee has invited 15 high-performing bowlers from the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy and the ongoing National T20 Cup as well as fast bowlers Mohammad Abbas and Shaheen Shah Afridi for the weekend camp.

The purpose of the camp is to provide the selectors better insight on the fitness and form of the bowlers that can further assist them while picking the T20I and Test sides. It will also give the bowlers an opportunity to understand their shortcomings and ways to improve their skills in the upcoming domestic matches.

Fast bowlers Abbas and Shaheen will be back in action after missing domestic matches. Abbas was given a break after the third round of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy to strategically manage his workload and fatigue, while Shaheen will return after for the first time since picking up dengue fever in August.

Pakistan bowling coach Waqar Younis said: “As the National T20 Cup has a two-day break, we thought of utilising this time by holding bowlers camp in Lahore with multiple objectives. But, this does not mean that the selectors have limited their selection options to these 11 bowlers. The selectors have an open mind and bowlers who are best suited to the formats and conditions on the upcoming tour will be selected.”

Chief selector and head coach Misbah-ul-Haq, and Test captain Azhar Ali will also monitor the camp.

The T20I and Test squads for the Australia tour will be announced by chief selector and head coach Misbah-ul-Haq at 215pm on Monday, 21 October, in media conference at the Far End, Gaddafi Stadium.

Bowlers invited for the camp are:

Bilal Asif (Central Punjab), Bilawal Bhatti (Southern Punjab), Imran Khan Snr (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Kashif Bhatti (Sindh), Mohammad Abbas (Southern Punjab), Mohammad Irfan Junior (Slow left-arm, Southern Punjab), Musa Khan (Northern), Mohammad Mohsin (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Naseem Shah (Central Punjab), Rahat Ali (Southern Punjab), Sameen Gul (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Shaheen Shah Afridi (Northern), Tabish Khan (Sindh), Yasir Shah (Balochistan) and Zahid Mehmood (Southern Punjab)

Positives: Shaheen, Sameen, Naseem, Musa

Why aren't they there?: Ehsan Adil and Zafar Gohar

WHYYYY??????: Rahat, Imran Khan sr, Bilawal Bhatti, Tabish Khan

Hasnain isn't in contention for test selection as he hasn't played enough first class or even list A. Also Waqar said he has too many technical issues for tests. Haris Rauf also hasn't played enough.

And the likes of Bilawal Bhatti, Imran Khan Sr, and Tabish Khan don't possess technical issues to play test cricket? I thought the whole point was to groom bowlers with extra pace. Even if these guys aren't yet ready, they should be in and around all these camps and working closely with Waqar. They won't progress if they keep playing T20 cricket.

And Rahat Ali - also bothers me having him there but guess this is our bench strength

Abbas, Shaheen, Musa and Tabish should go to Australia -- Naseem and Sameen are wonderful prospects who need another full season of FC cricket under their belt.

These camps won't do anything... what it has done in the past? anyone who comes in charge do all these gimmicks in the end we get served with pathetic bowlers who gets smacked around the park and not able to swing the new ball:inti

A total waste of time, but had Waqar invited the young fast Bowlers like Naseem, Rauf, Javed etc, then there may be some improvements in these guys.

A mixed bunch for sure.

Don't know how Bhatti is even in consideration.

Imran discovered Wasim and Waqar for Pakistan.
Waqar and Wasim have discovered ……………………. ?

Misbah and Waqar will undo all the work Mickey has done to bring up youngsters. It's incredible how horrible these guys are at judging talent.

I'd rather they picked bowlers for the future than some bowlers who are past their best.

Waqar (as a coach/manager) is the worst thing that can happen to Pak. He’s just full of himself and arrogant. Even as a bowler, i dont rate him very highly + the shoddy character (Qayum report et al).

With the exception of Abbas, Afridi, Bilal and Yasir, i don't believe anyone else of these guys will get selected for Australia.

It seems to me that these are a list of bowlers that the head coaches of all the regions have recommended and both Misbah and Waqar have said "Really???" to some of them. But as they have to take these recommendations seriously, Waqar wants to have a closer look and see if the coaches are suggesting gold.

The fact that a whole load of other bowlers are also missing like Shinwari, Hasnain, Hasan Ali, Shadab, Faheem, Junaid Khan, Mir Hamza and Waqas Maqsood (all of which have been involved in the senior setup in the last 12 months) They won't be dropping all of these guys. Also, Ehsan Adil and Zafar are both not there which may mean that both Misbah and Waqar already have looked at them and don't need a separate camp to make their decision on them.

They'll have a main camp just before they head out to Australia where I reckon Adil and Zafar will be invited.

Anyone on the list that you feel are past their best? I feel a peak years for a fast bowler are around 27-33 before they start going downhill

Why not Akif javed, the find of the T20 cup? He can swing the new ball both ways and has got a classic action. With his repeatable action, he appears to be someone who
can bowl long spells required for test cricket.

Tabish Khan is 33. Imran Khan 33. Plus TTFs, such as Rahat and Bilawal.

The reason is in your answer. He is the find of the national t200 tournament. The PCB have made it that to be selected for tests you must perform in first class. Although half the names in this list are useless or past their best before date.

He would be the 5th bowling option, just there to fill in some overs. Also his bowling is ‘t that bad, he swings the ball and is accurate.

My friend he isn't good enough to to play as 3rd seamer in a FC team and he isn't good enough to bat at 6 in the international team, where do you fit him in.

Waqar is actually far worse than Misbah. This guy has love for useless bowlers. I remember Waqar used Anwar Ali and Bhatti as main bowlers and Umar Akmal is keeper.

As bad as Shehzad is but he is/was still a proper bowler.

Hopefully Waqar has nothing to say in selection otherwise he will filled up the team with useless bowlers like Bhatti, Imran Khan Sr, Tabish, Rahat, Anwar Ali...

Musa Khan must be the shortest 140+ bowler right now in Pakistan

I'm pretty sure him and Naseem are the same height. Both are very exciting, but Naseem seems more disciplined at the moment.

I'm really excited about Sameen as well. 5 kph slower than Musa but he is tall, seams and swings it and is accurate.

Bilawal Bhatti and Imran Khan :))

Misbah and Waqar duo are doing exactly what I expected. I cannot wait for the upcoming humiliation. I hope fans give them a well deserved greeting on arrival at the airport.

Imran Khan has very good stats and is a perfect holdup pacer who can bowl 20-30 overs in an innings. He uses the new and old bell. Just look at his test stats. Mickey Arthur ruined his career as he felt he wasn't quick enough

A bowling average of 77 in Australia.... mashallah such quality.

Lol, this was the same tour where the rest of our bowlers struggled as well. One test match is too small a sample size. Imran Khan was the under rated hero of our test win in Sri Lanka in 2015.

Sorry, not good enough.

Care to explain why?

Not quick enough, not enough nouse or movement. Having an 81mph Bowler is OK, if the other guys are strike bowlers but we don't. Abbas will do the job you are describing and but as the tests showed in SA that doesn't work either.

Yes out of the nine pacers selected for the camp, three are useless (Imran Khan, Bhatti, Tabish) Then Rahat is a tried and trusted failure, who gives one four ball an over.

That leaves us with Abbas, Shaheen, Musa, Naseem and Sameen.

Yep this is about right, I would add Hasnain to the above group which can/should be tried for the Aus tour including T-20 and Test series.

I am thinking we should just pick quickies in the eleven.

Our spinners get bashed in Australia anyway

And the love affair with the likes of Rahat and Imran continues.

Yasir will be hammered once more there. You would think they will learn after both SA and Aus but apparently not.

The coach, not the selector. Imran, Bhatti and Rahat are his selections. He has no eye for players with actual ability just like Misbah.

I really hope against hope that he selects atleast one of Sameen Gul/Naseem Shah.

Sameen has excellent first class stats and his height should be useful in AUS.

But why bother because we all know that Rahat and Imran Khan Snr are most likely to be picked :(

Well, they were wrong about Hafeez being next captain, so I'm hoping they're wrong about this.

Rahat? IK? And of all the young crop, he wants to pick Musa Khan? Musa is extremely talented but he's probably the rawest when compared to Sameen and Nasim. It seems like he wants to pick Musa to show he's picking someone young, but at the same to have the excuse of Musa being too raw. If he picks Sameen or Nasim, there will be more pressure to actually play one of them.

"We need quick fast bowlers who can bowl quick yorkers and bouncers" - Misbah
Goes on to pick Rahat and Imran Khan. Then out of all the young quicks he picks Musa. Musa is definitely one for the future, but not now. Naseem and Sameen have shown control, pace and swing. Musa's been picked so that Misbah can say that I picked a young fast bowler, but he isn't actually going to play.

Waqar was apparantly left very impressed with the trio of Naseem, Sameen and Musa. He was especially impressed with the extreme talent of Naseem and the amazing fitness of Musa.

Imran Khan sr was made to bowl long spells by Misbah during the camp. Him and Rahat Ali are also in consideration for the test series.

We all saw what happened to Rahat and Imran in 2016/17.

I'm sorry but the Misbah/Waqar/Azhar combo have no clue about identifying talent. It's like we're going back to 2015.

Misbah's tenure so far has been to impress in the press conferences and make the fans think he is going to make some good decision, then he makes so horrible decisions like picking Shehzad, Akmal, Faheem, Azhar as captain, very likely he is going to pick Rahat, Imran Khan sr and maybe Musa.

Selection of genuine pace in Australia is a must, we've seen recently even the likes of Anderson broad woakes were generally toothless in Australia, the attacks that have done well in Australia recently like India and south Africa had genuine pace

But experience and age is more important than pace and skill. The wisdom of Rahat and Imran Khan sr is too good to keep out. Rahat only bowls loose deliveries to make everyone think he is mediocre, but he knows he isn't, he just doesn't want to use his full potantial.

Misbah will also be aware of the fact that the last time an Imran Khan made a comeback in Australia, he bacame the best bowler of that time and demolished the Aussie batting.

We're going to lose as it is, this is a strong Australia side, if we play trundlers it will be total crnage

I do agree, misbahs past has always been conservative, nothing different here

Oh boy Misbah is going to face some serious backlash world wide.

If so won't watch Pakistan games till this shameless duo's get kicked out.

To be honest I am not exactly sure what everybody was expecting. Though the news isnt confirmed but did you all really think that Pak would and should have gone with Abbas with 14 tests, Shaheen with 3 tests while Musa, Naseem and Sameen all debuting.

I dont remember last time a team touring Australia with three debutant pacers and other two with 14 and 3 matches respectively.

Not saying Imran and Rahat (If selected) will bamboozle Aus but not sure if 3 debutants along someone with test matches and just recovered from dangue would be a great decision as well (personally i wouldnt have mind as I like seeing you youngsters). People and media would have criticized either ways in my opinion because none of these situations are great to be in but then thats the only available scenarios.

Well I don't remember the last time we won a series in Australia, because we haven't. The selections should be made on merit, Rahat, Imran and Musa don't merit selection. Sameen and Naseem do. Who cares what the media says. If Misbah was scared of the media, he shouldn't have taken the job.

This is a desperate time in Pakistan cricket, and this calls for an overhaul of our bowling. We need fresh faces, even if that means a pace attack with under 20 games of experience. The Aussies will literally laugh when the Rahat and Imran sr bowl. They have terrible fitness, pace, accuracy and skill.

Very promising tweet that from Waqar. “Time to move forward.”
