Fast bowler Kane Richardson was today ruled out of the squad having aggravated a hamstring in preparation for the tour at training yesterday. He has been replaced in the squad by Ben Dwarshuis.

Although the injury is considered minor it was decided the long trip to Pakistan along with four games in eight days and short turnarounds it was in Richardson’s best interests to remain home.

Australia plays three One-Day Internationals and a T20 International against Pakistan in Lahore.

“Pakistan is a strong team and it will be a tough competition between the two sides" : Aaron Finch

MELBOURNE: Australia’s white-ball captain Aaron Finch claimed that the away series against Pakistan will be a tough challenge.

Finch, while talking to the media via a virtual press conference, termed Pakistan as a good side, while claiming it would be a competitive series.

“Pakistan is a strong team and it will be a tough competition between the two sides,” he said.

“It is their home series so we have to prepare accordingly. It is an important series for both of us,” he added.

The Australian captain also commented about their preparation for the tour, said there are a lot of inexperienced players in the squad, however, backed them that they are capable of doing well.

“They are quite inexperienced for Australia but I think playing T20 cricket will help them in that regard. There is a lot of skill in the group and guys that have been around one-day cricket for a long time domestically as well,” he said.

“We have started training here. The players are looking in good touch, we just need to adjust in 50-overs conditions,” he added.

The 35-years-old captain then went on to comment about his fitness, said he is doing completely fit and is looking to score as many runs as he could before the upcoming ICC T20I World Cup later this year.

“I am 100 percent fit now. Looking forward to scoring as many runs as possible before the World Cup,” he said.

Update: Sarfaraz Ahmed has left the Test squad to join Sindh for their remaining Pakistan Cup matches.

Australia batter Steve Smith will miss the white ball component of the Qantas Tour of Pakistan to manage discomfort in his left elbow.

Smith experienced some discomfort during the three-match Test series and, with a full schedule of international cricket over the coming 18 months, it was felt prudent to prioritise recovery and treatment at this time.

He will be replaced by Queensland leg-spinner Mitchell Swepson in the squad to contest three One-Day Internationals (29 and 31 March and 2 April) and a T20 International (5 April), with all matches taking place in Lahore.

Cricket Australia’s Head of Sports Science and Sports Medicine, Alex Kountouris, said: “Steve has been experiencing some minor discomfort in his left elbow during the latter stages of the Test series in Pakistan and, given he had an injury with the same elbow last year, we felt it important to manage this proactively.

“Withdrawing him from the white ball matches means Steve will have the necessary time to rehabilitate his elbow to ensure his continuing availability and performance for Australia.”

Chair of Selectors George Bailey said: “With the significant amount of cricket to come over the next 18 months, and the fact he has had an issue with the same elbow previously, it is appropriate for Steve to return home at the end of the Test series in Pakistan.

“We have opted not to name a replacement batter as we feel we have options within the existing squad, and Steve’s absence offers up additional opportunities to players within the group.

“We are excited because with a T20 World Cup later this year and a 50-over Cricket World Cup in Asia next year, these four matches against a quality Pakistan team are a great chance for players to stake their claims for places in those tournaments.

"We have decided to include Mitchell Swepson in the white ball squad because it will offer us additional options in the bowling department on surfaces that may well assist spinners.

“Mitchell was part of our Twenty20 International squads in both the West Indies and Bangladesh last year, as well as at the T20 World Cup, and having been in Pakistan for the past month he is familiar with conditions. We know if called upon he will do an excellent job.”

Steve Smith said: “It’s disappointing to miss these matches against Pakistan but after chatting with the medical staff I can see the need to take a break at this time.

“I do not regard this as a major issue but by staying on top of things now, we can ensure that it doesn’t become something more significant further down the line.”

Australia squad: Aaron Finch (c), Sean Abbott, Ashton Agar, Jason Behrendorff, Alex Carey, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Marnus Labuschagne, Mitchell Marsh, Ben McDermott, Marcus Stoinis, Mitchell Swepson, Adam Zampa.

Pat Cummins says it's not his job to pick Australian cricket's next coach but is offering a ringing endorsement to caretaker Andrew McDonald.

McDonald took on the head coaching role for the Pakistan tour after Justin Langer's messy post-Ashes departure.

And Cummins says McDonald's influence on Australia's 1-0 series win in Pakistan can't be undersold.

"He's fantastic," Cummins said after Australia's 115-run win in the third Test in Lahore on Friday sealed the series victory.

"Very diligent, very thorough, strategic, very organised.

"He's a huge part of this tour win ... and all the support staff. It's not just the players that walk out, we have got a squad of 30-odd people working so hard.

"He (McDonald) has been an important part.

"It's not my place to appoint the coach, but he has been fantastic."

After Langer resigned, Cummins stated: "We need a new style of coaching and skillset."

And he also flat-batted accusations from retired pace ace Mitchell Johnson, who described Cummins as "gutless" and accused him of having an "agenda to get in a coach he wants".

Cricket Australia has started canvassing potential candidates to take the head coaching role full-time, with McDonald considered the favourite.

Whoever gets the gig will take over an Australian Test team brimming with confidence after their Pakistan success.

Cummins' next captaincy assignment is a two-Test tour of Sri Lanka in June and July before a four-Test tour of India starting in September.

"The amount of confidence we will get out of winning over here, not just as a team but so many individuals ... being able to stand up to Asian conditions, it's huge for the Sri Lanka tour later in the year," Cummins said.

"It's probably not as much (spinning) conditions here as what we'll get in Sri Lanka.

"But I think the last Asian tours that I have been on, there's a lot of talk in Australia that we have got to change our game to suit over here.

"This is a good lesson that the basics of batting and bowling that we play in Australia can hold up over here. If anything, it reaffirms that our game can hold up."

Covid hits Aussie team as star rushed to Pakistan as crisis deepens

Australia has lost T20 World Cup hero Mitch Marsh for the ODI series against Pakistan after the all-rounder suffered a hip injury at training with Cameron Green set to take his place.

The loss of Marsh for the three-match series will add to the pressure already on an inexperienced bowling outfit including rookie Nathan Ellis as well as Jason Behrendorff and Sean Abbott after Kane Richardson was a late withdrawal due to a hamstring injury.

Australia will also be without wicketkeeper and batsman Josh Inglis who tested positive for Covid-19 on Monday.

“Inglis will isolate for five days before returning to the squad,” said a Cricket Australia release.

Matt Renshaw is flying to Pakistan as a replacement but will first have to undergo three days of isolation before he can join the squad.

The rest of the squad returned negative test results, so for now there are no fears of a wider outbreak.

Test fast bowling trio Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood will all be rested from the series along with veteran opener David Warner while Steve Smith was forced out with injury and all-rounder Glenn Maxwell misses after getting married.

The Aussies have reinjected Test batters Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne to bolster the team’s experience.

But the loss of Marsh, who hasn’t played for Australia since his player-of-the-match performance in the World Cup final last November, is an early setback.

“He’s injured his hip-flexor, we think, at training. We are going to have to wait and see what that looks like but I don’t think he’ll be available for the series based on how he was feeling yesterday,” Finch said from Lahore on Monday.

“He sustained that in a fielding drill, it was a high intensity, lateral movement drill and he bent down to pick it up one handed and went to throw and felt a twinge. “

Marsh’s absence opens the door for Green, who played all three Test matches against Pakistan, to add to his single ODI as a like-for-like all-round replacement.

Finch said Green was a “super talented” cricketer and was excited to see him get another opportunity as Australia prepares for back-to-back T20 and 50-over World Cups in 2022 and 2023.

“Cam will play and probably bat in that middle-order role ... we’ve seen he’s a super talented cricketer, his impact with the bat and ball can’t be understated,” Finch said.

Finch said that opportunity existed for all the players in the squad who aren’t regulars to press their ongoing claims with so many absentees.

“We’ve still got a really solid idea of what our squad and out 11 would look like if the World Cup was tomorrow. It's about making sure we are building that depth. His impact with the bat and ball can’t be understated. really excited for him to get this opportunity,

“It’'s a great opportunity for guys to put their hand sup and really build a case for their long term spot in the squad, the excitement of having a younger side is huge as well. It’s about guys taking their opportunities when they present themselves. There's going to be difficult times throughout the series but really excited for these guys to get an opportunity.

The first of three ODIs, which will all be played in Lahore, will be played on Tuesday.

Originally devised to encompass last summer’s Ashes campaign, the follow-up to Amazon’s 2018-19 documentary about the Australian men’s team is still filming, with the on-screen story to encompass the recent triumphant Test tour of Pakistan.

As the Indian Premier League’s broadcast rights attracted record dollars at auction in India, members of the documentary production team have been in Sri Lanka with the touring party, shooting “wash-up” interviews with players to capture their feelings about the tumultuous 2021-22 season.

Seamer Chamika Karunaratne claimed career-best figures of 3-47 as Sri Lanka evened the five-match, one-day international series against Australia with a 26-run win.

More interviews will also be conducted back home in Australia. The project’s key cinematographer, Andre Mauger, was present in the team camp across last summer, then the tour of Pakistan following the resignation of Justin Langer as head coach in early February. He returns to the road for the Test series in Sri Lanka.

At the same time, Cricket Australia and Amazon remain in talks about where exactly to take the series and how it might be distributed - including the possibility of releasing episodes in more than one instalment this time around.

The IPL’s TV and digital rights have been sold in two various packages for $US6.2 billion ($8.8 billion) combined after a groundbreaking broadcast auction in India. On a game by game basis, that makes the rights more valuable than any other global sports property other than the NFL, edging ahead of the Premier League soccer rights.

Rights were largely shared by Disney Star (TV rights) and Viacom 18 (digital rights), with the digital packages overall making up more than half the value of the rights package. Unsuccessful bidders can now expect contact from a myriad of other governing bodies about buying their cricket rights.

Jay Shah, the BCCI’s secretary, has also flagged a two-and-a-half-month window for the IPL, possibly split into two segments, from 2024 onwards.

The Pakistan tour segment of the documentary, meanwhile, is expected to look closely at the fortunes of Usman Khawaja, who won a recall to the Test team late in the Ashes and then carried all before him in winning the player of a series Australia won 1-0 in the land of his birth.

Equally, the emergence of Pat Cummins as Test captain after the dramatic resignation of Tim Paine will also be featured in some detail, after Mauger was embedded with the team during the Gold Coast camp at which the captaincy changeover took place.

Whatever the timeline, Langer will not be the central focus of the documentary, in a project that is geared much more at telling the stories of the players in a team that is far more cohesive than the one first captured in June 2018 by the first series.

In February, Langer declined an offer from CA to have his contract extended by six months until the end of the Twenty20 World Cup on home soil in October and November this year.

The Test documentary series was released in one complete set of eight episodes on Amazon Prime in March 2020, right at the outset of COVID-19. This time, there is the possibility of releasing two instalments of the series at different junctures, perhaps either side of the forthcoming home summer.

Whether the project continues beyond these episodes is another intriguing question. Next year looms as a whopper for the national team, with a Test tour of India followed by the defence of the Ashes in England and then the ODI World Cup also in India.

CA declined to comment.
