TEAM NEWS
Vitality Blast Captain Lewis Gregory and Babar Azam are available for selection but Tom Banton is unavailable due to international commitments and Craig Overton is rested.

Head Coach, Jason Kerr has named the following 13-man squad:

Lewis Gregory (c), Tom Abell, Babar Azam, George Bartlett, Eddie Byrom, Josh Davey, Steve Davies, Ben Green, James Hildreth, Tom Lammonby, Ollie Sale, Roelof van der Merwe and Max Waller.

VIEW FROM THE DRESSING ROOM

Ahead of the match Somerset Head Coach, Jason Kerr said: “The performance against Glamorgan was incredibly polished. We were disappointed with our performance against Northants but the way we came back on Tuesday night was brilliant for the team and gives us huge confidence going into the game against Worcestershire Rapids.

“They are a strong white-ball outfit and I’m sure they’ll be looking to bounce back against us on Thursday. We certainly won’t underestimate them or any team we face this year.

“Lewis will be back to captain the side and I have to say that Tom Abell did a brilliant job in his absence. We welcome back Babar Azam as well, so to boost the squad with two internationals gives us huge strength in depth.”

DID YOU KNOW?

Babar Azam is dismissed every 34.3 balls he faces in T20 cricket. No other player to have played at least 100 innings is dismissed less often. The next best is Virat Kohli at 30.6

Babar Azam in today's game.

First match. 42 off 35.

<iframe src="https://streamable.com/e/fmzyr8" width="640" height="360" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; fullscreen" allowfullscreen></iframe>.

4x4 and 1x6

That's 22 in 5 balls. That leaves 20 runs in 30 balls. At least 10 balls were dots.

I noticed in the two T20Is as well, Babar has been playing a bit too many dot balls.

Bit sad - and I am sure he is not aware of the significance of this brand - which is an alcohol company.

Babar’s timing has been a bit off since last two matches... he should try to play his natural game because he is not a hard hitter...

He made 42 off 35 balls while the other Somerset batsmen made 167 off 88!

Babar does have the tendency of starting out slow.

Where he errs is not being able to accelerate when set.

He made 42 off 35 balls while the other Somerset batsmen made 167 off 88!

Could argue that he helped set up the base for other batsmen to accelerate. He played his role - Babar isn't someone who will score at more than SR 120-130 - thats what you get when you sign him

That said, I do agree in the longer term Babar needs to improve his scoring rate in T20s

I think pakistani fans would be happy to have shezard back instead of babar

Whats sad about it ? we should be interested in his game and not other unrelated stuff.

The only reason its been highlighted is that both players asked for no alcohol adverts last year.

This year, Babar seems to have not noted it and its sad for me that a Muslim is unknowingly promoting alcohol.

As you will note from Saj's tweet, Somerset have taken note and will remove it for next games.

i find this a bit weird.

Somerset pays Babar to play for them and one of the sponsors of Somerset is a company promoting alcohol.

So which means the money coming Babar is fr sure a part of THAT sponsorship as without sponsors a club will not survive.

back on to his innings 42 of 35 is good in ODIs but he is batting too slow in T20s.

Pakistan’s white-ball cricket captain, Babar Azam has told his English county, Somerset that he would not display the logo of any alcohol beverage company on his shirt during the ongoing T20 Blast event in England.

Babar, who joined Somerset after Pakistan’s tour ended on Tuesday, was seen wearing a shirt which had the logo of an alcohol company on his back.

Not surprisingly, it led to some backlash in the social media but a source close to the Pakistan captain confirmed he had made it clear in his contract with Somerset he would not promote any alcohol company logo.

“Apparently the logo was on the back of Babar’s shirt by mistake and the county has assured him it will be removed for the next match,” the source said.

Babar in his first appearance for Somerset scored 42 runs and took a stunning catch to lead his team to a 16-run victory.

In the past Muslim players representing other teams including England, South Africa and Australia have refused to wear kits displaying logo of any alcohol beverages company despite having to suffer big losses in earnings from their respective cricket boards.

Hashim Amla and Imran Tahir in South Africa, Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid in England are a few examples.

The Pakistan cricket board permitted few of its players including Babar, Imad Wasim and Shaheen Shah Afridi to stay back in England and play the T20 blast tournament.

I think he ll be receiving a pay cut for not displaying that logo as was the case for Hashim amla when he played for SA

First ball six, dot, out. 6 (3) in the 2nd game.

That summary is the most un-Babar thing ever.

Never would I expect Babar to smack a first ball six against a medium fast bowler like Bresnan. And you rarely see him getting out early on especially after a boundary since he is usually very circumspect after hitting one.

Babar’s timing has been a bit off since last two matches... he should try to play his natural game because he is not a hard hitter...

Agree. Seems that he is trying to play Haider Ali shots. I don’t mind a little experimentation, but Babar is at his best when he doesn’t clear the front leg. Hope he realizes this.

Can Babar find a way to play the 4-day format?

It really supercharges sub-continental cricketers. Pujara being a recent example.

He hasn’t been as fluent as he was before lockdown. Not enjoying this batting by Babar in the last few matches

t20 ends up destroying technique in the long run. Hope it doesn't happen to Babar, we don't need his number 1 t20 ranking, we need him to rake in the runs in tests and odis.

Babar has really upped his class and is better than Kohli in his current form

Babar playing against Gloucestershire tonight.

Needs to get a good score tonight and get him back in the groove.

Babar is gone for a golden duck! First ball of the chase. Strange that he is getting out cheaply - not the Babar we know.

Oh Babar what are you doing :(

Play your natural game bro...

The decision was extremely questionable. Seemed most certainly high. Shame there are no reviews.

Surely that was going over the stumps.

Babar's team ends up on the losing side.

Thanks for the clip. Did look to be high at first glance. Dunno how the umpire seemed so confident.

Babar Azam in T20 blast so far: 48 runs in three games.

Last year, he was the highest run-getter in the tournament with 578 runs in 13 matches for Somerset.

Somerset vs Gloucestershire, Central Group - another chance for Babar to prove his mettle.

Needs a big score today (no pressure Babar!)

Out for 10.

Now has 58 runs in 4 innings so far this season.

A bit worried. Has completely lost fluency post lockdown. Maybe he’s one of those players who performs in Internationals.

Lock down and suddenly so much cricket abroad can definitely have a toll on you. As a professional you should be able to maintain high intensity even in domestic cricket and leagues but thats not always easy especially under these circumstances. He is a class act, if he is mentally in right state if mind runs should be around the corner I think.

GLOUCS 203/6 (20)

Horrible season for Babar.

Definitely more suited to the 50-over format, which makes his knock even better. A good T20 batsman, but he seems to be on the way to being a very, very good one (as he is in 50-over cricket).

The commentators said it was at tricky pitch, well that makes the ton even more speciall, allthough the bowling looked ordinary. Congrats! :)
