South African skipper Dean Elgar received a massive ovation from Proteas and Indians alike as he walked back to the hur following his dismissal in the second innings on Wednesday at the Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town on Day 1 of the second Test.

Elgar had announced that this would be his last series before retirement and the Indian team ensured that the left-handed batsmen would receive the respect he deserves on his final bow.

Team Indian stars Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Jaspirt Bumrah and others congratulated the 36-year-old on his career after he was dismissed by Mukesh Kumar for 12 runs on his final appearance for the Proteas.

Kohli picked up the catch to get rid of the player and called for the team and the crowd to show the South African batter respect for his contributions to the sport.

A moved Elgar waved his bat in gratitude as he walked back to the dugout with the Indian and South African pavilion on their feet alongside a raucous crowd that acknowledged the southpaw’s services to the country’s cricket team.

South Africa won the toss and opted to bat first in the second Test of the series and were bundled out for just 55 runs by the Indian bowling attack in the first innings as Mohammed Siraj starred with a six-wicket haul.

India managed to score 153 runs in reply as they took a 98-run lead before being wrapped up by the home team. Kohli top scored for the visitors with his 46 runs knock, while Rohit added 39 runs and Shubman Gill chipped in with 36 runs.

The second innings was off to a good start for India as they managed to scalp Elgar early in the innings before pacer Mukesh struck again to send Tony de Zorzi back to the hut for just a single run.

Bumrah jumped in on the action as he dismissed Tristan Stubbs yet again, after he also got rid of the batsman in the first innings, as South Africa were reeling at 50 runs for the loss of 3 wickets in the second innings.

Essex are delighted to announce the signing of Dean Elgar on a three-year deal.

The seasoned batter, whose remarkable career in Test cricket for South Africa came to an end earlier this month, joins the Club ahead of the 2024 season.

Following his retirement from international cricket, Elgar joins Essex to contribute his wealth of experience and skill to the Club.

Elgar, 36, enjoyed an impressive Test career since making his debut for South Africa in 2012, scoring 5,347 runs across 86 matches.

He has scored 48 first-class centuries, including a blistering 185 against India on his home ground at Centurion in his final series for the Proteas.

His leadership qualities and experience at the highest level, combined with an exceptional batting prowess, will bolster the top order in the County Championship.

Expressing his enthusiasm about joining Essex, Elgar said: “I’m thrilled to embark on this new chapter of my cricketing journey with Essex.

“The Club have been pushing for honours in recent years and I’m eager to contribute to further success.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my previous experiences in county cricket and I’m really looking forward to joining up with the squad ahead of season.”

Essex Head Coach, Anthony McGrath, expressed his delight in welcoming Elgar to the Club: “Dean brings a wealth of talent and experience that will undoubtedly strengthen our squad for the 2024 season,” he said.

“He has had an outstanding career in Test cricket and has demonstrated to the world his desire to score runs at the highest level, right up until he retired.

Former Test captain Dean Elgar described a toxic environment of politics and poor administration in South African cricket during an interview with a local newspaper:

"I became a part-time cricketer and full-time politician, something that I never want to go through again."

"I am a sportsman, not a politician or a cricket administrator, but I was thrown into a cauldron in which I had to be all three. If I had known that before, I would never have accepted the captaincy."

"I tried to make the best of a bad job, to control the things I could control. But my own form took a dive."

"It felt as though they did not recognise all my hard work over the previous year-and-a-half, that they didn't realise how much we had improved as a team."

"From being sixth or seventh in the world we became a team with the potential to play in the World Test championship final."

"Shukri Conrad is the reason why my Test career was cut short."

"I think I don't fit into the South African situation as it is now and probably into the future."
