[PICTURES/VIDEOS] England's tour of Pakistan (2022)

England were never going to send a full team to play only T20 matches anyways. They'll send the full squad when they tour again for the Test matches.

The England and Wales Cricket Board are committed to the forthcoming T20 tour of Pakistan despite the flooding that has ravaged the country.

England have not played in Pakistan since 2005 due to security concerns and pulled out of a planned series last year at short notice.

The Pakistan Cricket Board were furious with that decision, making England's visit for a seven-match T20 series starting on September 20 even more significant for relations between the countries.

Matches are due to be held in Karachi and Lahore, with no changes currently planned despite the worst floods in Pakistani history, which have left a death toll of 1,200 and rising and a third of the country under water.

Asked about the situation on Friday, Rob Key, managing director of men's cricket at the ECB, said: "It's a moving picture at the moment, there's been a hell of a lot of communication between people out there and the ECB, the PCA (Professional Cricketers' Association).

"But it's a trip we're desperate to go on and it's going to take a lot for us not to get out there.

"I think hopefully us going out there and playing will be a positive for what's been a pretty harrowing time for the people of that country.

"I'm really looking forward to getting out there."

I pointed this out earlier too,

Morgan retired prematurely because as the white ball captain he would need to have a serious excuse this time to avoid the Pakistan tour!

I was proven right. These guys will do anything in their power to not have to tour Pakistan!

This is the funniest comment I’ve ever read in my life, this biggest conspiracy believer in the world.

Rob Key has been to Pakistan quiet a lot in recent years doing media coverage and commentary before he took up the big role in ECB. He is a much more confident and brave guy than Giles ever was who was always a timid kitten.

Bodes well, looking forward to the series. Watching Buttler in Pak is going to be a sight.

Federal Minister for Inter Provincial Coordination (IPC) Ehsan-ur-Rehman Mazari, who was excited for England team touring Pakistan for almost after 17 years, sees the tour as a full revival of international cricket in the country. “It is sending a softer image of Pakistan to the world that the situation in our country is stable and there was no security threat at all. When I was in Brimgham for the Commonwealth Games I met their minister and thanked him also for sending their team here,” he told APP.

Mazari said their minister also asked him on he thinks would win the T20I series, to which he replied Pakistan. “Currently Pakistan team is doing very well in the game and our captain Babar Azam was very talented and I hope that Pakistan performs well.—APP

It's bulletproof buses, snipers on the rooftops and guards with machine guns as the England cricket team return to Pakistan for the first time in 17 YEARS with presidential-level security

  • England squad have been offered VVIP protection - level given to heads of state
  • More than 300 security personnel are on duty around the England team hotel
  • On match days, roads en route to Karachi's National Stadium will be sealed off
  • The three-week tour comes as Pakistan grapples with a humanitarian crisis

An England team arrived on Pakistan soil for the first time in 17 years on Thursday bearing gifts but wrapped in presidential-level security.

Within a couple of hours of a 20-man squad landing in Karachi for a seven-match Twenty20 series, it was announced that the players had donated a five-figure sum to the country's official flood fund and that their ECB bosses were doubling it.

The three-week tour comes as Pakistan grapples with a humanitarian crisis that has seen a third of the country submerged by a 'monster' monsoon season that has affected an estimated 33 million people.

Addressing a media conference that attracted more than 60 local reporters and two dozen television cameras, England captain Jos Buttler explained they wanted to play a 'small part' with their relief money, adding: 'We hope that us being here can uplift things a little bit and raise people's spirits by seeing us play cricket. Sport has a great power to unite people.'

England last played in Pakistan in 2005 and were due to return 12 months ago, until they followed New Zealand's hasty departure on safety grounds with a cancellation of their own, citing concerns over 'mental and physical well-being' of their players ahead of the Ashes - a decision the Pakistan Cricket Board branded 'disrespectful'.

On Thursday morning, they arrived with VVIP protection - the level given to heads of state.

The PCB have handed over half a dozen of their bulletproof mini-buses for daily travel and more than 300 security personnel are on duty around the team hotel, including plain clothes armed officers and guards with machine guns.

On match days, roads en route to Karachi's National Stadium will be sealed off, snipers strategically placed on rooftops and a helicopter will monitor their journey. Shops, offices and petrol stations nearby will be ordered to shut.

'Visually it seems over the top but of course it is there to make sure everything runs smoothly,' Buttler, who was on a similarly security-heavy tour of Bangladesh in 2016, said.

'That is the initial challenge as players, it visually being very different to what you are used to. After a day or two you get used to it, focus on the cricket and look forward to playing.'

Buttler added that reservations amongst the group about travelling did not exist following a presentation by the ECB's security advisor Reg Dickason last week.

International cricket has gradually returned to Pakistan following the ambush by terrorists of the Sri Lanka team bus in Lahore 13 years ago.

During that period, England played their away series versus the Pakistanis in 2012 and 2015 in the United Arab Emirates and so this trip plus three pre-Christmas Tests, following a successful tour by Australia this spring, represents the full reintegration of Pakistan as a host nation within the international game.

England coach Matthew Mott says he won't be taking any risks with injured skipper Jos Buttler so close to the start of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup.

Buttler is still battling the calf injury he picked up while playing domestic cricket in England and the star right-hander hasn't played any international cricket since he featured against South Africa in a T20I in Southampton at the end of July.

The 32-year-old has missed the opening four matches of England's ongoing seven-game T20I series against Pakistan and Mott said there were no guarantees the skipper would see any action over the final three games.

"With regards to Jos, he's still a while off," Mott said.

"He's not a player we want to take a risk on at this stage, so close to a (T20) World Cup, and it was a reasonably significant injury that he had.

"He's champing at the bit for a game but we'll just try and see how we go. Maybe in the last game or two, he might be a chance."

Buttler's availability for the T20 World Cup will be crucial to England's fortunes, with the in-form opener finishing last year's event as the fourth leading run-scorer.

He then backed that up by leading all players at this year's IPL tournament when he smashed four centuries and a whopping 863 runs for Rajasthan Royals and England will be hoping he can replicate that type of form in Australia.

While Buttler may not feature during England's remaining three matches against Pakistan in Karachi, Mott's side still has a further four warm-up games in Australia prior to their opening match of the T20 World Cup that their captain could potentially play in.

While England missed a golden chance to go ahead 3-1 in their series with Pakistan when they fell to a narrow three-run loss to the Asian side on Sunday, Mott said his team are continuing to face high-pressure games against quality opposition that will surely help them in the long run.

"We couldn't ask for better preparation than games like tonight (Sunday against Pakistan) where it's all on the line with a couple of overs to go and players are under pressure," he said.

"To play in high-pressure situations in front of a big crowd that was right into the game (is great).

"Yes, we would love to have won, but I think when you head into a World Cup, you want to play against good opposition in tough games and it's been every bit of that."
