Google-celebrates-75th-Pakistan-Independence-Day1660482982-0.jpg

Google on Sunday joined Pakistanis to celebrate the country’s 75th Independence Day by featuring historic Frere Hall’s doodle.

“Today’s Doodle celebrates the 75th Independence Day in Pakistan! On this day in 1947, Pakistan gained independence and became a sovereign nation. This public holiday also commemorates the deeds and legacies of Pakistan's founders,” the tech giant said in a message.

The statement further said, “Today’s artwork features Frere Hall in Karachi, which was built to serve as a town hall in 1865. The historic building is now a popular tourist destination that houses Karachi’s largest library, the Liaquat National Library, with a collection of more than 70,000 books and manuscripts.”

In 1980, famous Pakistani artist Sadequain was chosen to decorate the hall’s ceilings.

“Happy Independence Day, Jashn-e-Azadi, Pakistan!,” read Google’s message.

The Independence Day celebrations started with a 31-gun salute in Islamabad, followed by flag-raising ceremonies at presidential and parliament buildings.

Many speeches on national progress are made by political leaders and televised live to the public. Festivities such as parades, firework displays, patriotic concerts and award ceremonies are also held across the country.

Pakistan Independence Day is more than just a holiday; it is a day of remembrance, gratitude, and hope. It is a time to come together as a nation, celebrate our shared history and cultural heritage, and renew our commitment to building a prosperous and harmonious future. As we commemorate this day in 2023, let us remember the sacrifices of the past, celebrate our achievements, and look forward to the journey that lies ahead with unity and determination. HAPPY INDEPENDENT DAY.

Economic crisis dampens Independence Day celebrations for residents of Pakistani capital

ISLAMABAD:This year’s Pakistan Independence Day celebrations will not be the same for Mohammad Haseeb and his family.

Soaring inflation in Pakistan has pushed the biology teacher to spend less on festivities in one of the toughest years for households struggling to contend with energy and food bills.

Earlier this month, Pakistan announced an increase in petrol and diesel prices to meet fiscal objectives laid down in a deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), adding further fuel to its sky-high inflation. The country’s Consumer Price Index rose to 28.3 percent in July, year-on-year, with prices up 3.5 percent in July from the previous month. In June, the CPI rise was 29.4 percent year-on-year, coming off a record 38 percent in May.

Islamabad has committed to a petroleum levy of up to 50 rupees a liter, alongside a string of painful measures, including raising extra revenues, increasing energy prices and a market-based exchange rate, which has already fueled inflation.

The lower house of parliament was also dissolved on Wednesday, three days before the end of its five-year term on Aug. 12. A general election in the South Asian country of 241 million people should be held in 90 days but it could be delayed for several months because the election commission has to redraw the boundaries of hundreds of constituencies based on a new census data. Independent political analysts say a delay in holding polls may fuel more political tensions and unrest.

“We used to display buntings on Independence Day in celebration and buy clothes for our children but now this year we will display buntings only,” Haseeb told Arab News, explaining how his family was reckoning with record inflation.

Biology teacher Saqib Javed also lamented inflation and currency depreciation, saying there was little to celebrate this August 14, the day when Pakistan achieved independence and was declared a sovereign state following the end of British Raj in August 1947.

“I don’t expect anything from Pakistan right now,” he told Arab News.

However, things could improve, he added, if institutions opted for “course correction.”

“If the main four or five institutions are fixed, I think Pakistan will start growing, we’ll have a very good future,” Javed said.

Salaar Ahmad Abbasi, a student in Islamabad, echoed concerns about inflation and political turmoil in recent months, saying it was pushing many young Pakistanis to consider a life outside their homeland.

“There were less than fifty percent people who wanted to leave Pakistan when I started university, but now I can tell you that any boy in our class who gets a chance will leave Pakistan,” Abbasi said, adding that he too was applying for a student visa to travel abroad due to lack of opportunities in Pakistan.

“I love my country, I want Pakistan to prosper and I will be very happy if Pakistan prospers,” the student said. “But to be very realistic, I don’t see it happening, it makes me sad.”

The failure of political governments to instill hope in the youth, and an unending political crisis, was pushing people to seek opportunities abroad, experts said.

“The youth believe they don’t have a future in Pakistan,” political science professor Dr. Rasul Bakhsh Rais told Arab News. “That’s why they are trying to leave the country for a better future in Middle East and Europe.”

Inflation and economic policies were also hurting businesses and morale, said realtor Ashfaq Cheema.

“Right now, the government has imposed a lot of taxes on the real estate sector,” he told Arab News. “The buying power of people has decreased, which is why the sale and purchase of real estate has dropped significantly.”

However, he said the overall economic situation could improve if the political situation improved.

“If elections are held, new government comes in, business improves and stability is restored in business and politics, as soon as the ongoing political situation improves, our businesses will also prosper and the country will improve,” Cheema added.

But despite the challenges, there are many Pakistanis are still holding out hope.

“Inflation has significantly increased, businesses and the economy are down, you know where the fuel and petrol [prices] have gone,” Shafiq Ahmed, an employee at a private company, said.

“Poor people like us can’t afford it but we will celebrate the independence which we have achieved, we cannot forget it … No matter what the [economic] conditions, however things are going, passion shouldn’t die.”

Hasnat Ahmad Sipra, CEO Cadet College, Fateh Jang, said he was “definitely” going to celebrate Independence Day.

“We are planning to celebrate this auspicious occasion like before, with some new promises, with new zeal and zest,” he said, “with new spirits that we will do better than before.”

Political analysts Dr. Qamar Cheema urged Pakistanis, particularly young people, to be patient, have faith in the state and work to be productive citizens.

“People are faced with inflation and unemployment even in Europe and America,” he said. “So, Pakistanis should struggle here to fix their country instead of leaving it in difficult times.”

We need hope and imagination more than relying upon experience and evidence. Given the many crises – social, economic, political, and cultural – that we have been facing for long, experience and evidence are bound to take us further down a path marked by the already familiar milestones of despair and despondency. The other road, though shrouded in the mists of uncertainty, is, thankfully, still paved with optimism, expectations and even brightness.

Let us imagine a country where people agree to disagree; where disagreements are not resolved through force; where differences of opinion do not generate unending violent conflicts; and where peace, prosperity, and plurality can exist without having to worry about the destructive winds of pride and prejudice.

Happy belated independence day. Despite the many flaws of Pakistan, I am glad for its existence. May Allah make Pakistan a prosperous nation in the future, Ameen.

This 77th Independence Day is surely going to be a special one for Pakistanis to celebrate with Arshad Nadeem's Gold Medal.

A very happy Independence Day to all members!

Arshad Nadeem has made this Independence Day special for all Pakistanis. Happy Independence Day to every individual in Pakistan living in or outside of this country. But not to those who looted this country like a freelader.

The country is facing an economic crisis and instability, yet the youth of Pakistan are celebrating Independence Day as if we were the superpower of the world.

77 years of painful separation of brothers divided by a man made borders. I hope no mother ever has to see what Bharat Mata had to endure.

Citizens throng Karachi’s streets to celebrate August 14

A large number of Karachiites came out of their homes on Tuesday night to witness fireworks and attend musical functions across the city as the metropolis dived into celebrations on the eve of Independence Day.

Different government organisations, political parties and bodies organised functions at various places to mark the beginning of August 14.

Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori organised a “historic fireworks display” at Governor House at midnight between August 13 and 14.

Renowned singer Atif Aslam performed at the Independence Day programme, Mr Tessori said in a statement issued by his spokesman.

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan also staged a show on main road near Five Star Chowrangi in North Nazimabad to mark the celebrations.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Functional also staged almost a similar show near Sakhi Hasan Chowrangi in North Nazimabad.

The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf held an Independence Day rally from Karachi to Thatta, Kotri, and Hyderabad led by its Sindh chapter president Haleem Adil Sheikh.

The Jamaat-i-Islami held a ceremony at Water Pump Chowrangi.

Religious leaders oppose women's I-Day marathon

The leaders from various religious parties of Hyderabad have expressed strong concern over the planned women's marathon to mark Independence Day, demanding that the Sindh government and district administration withdraw the decision.

Speaking at a joint press conference at the Hyderabad Press Club, they warned that if the event is not cancelled, they will go to any extent to stop it.

The press conference was addressed by Jamaat-e-Islami district chief Hafiz Tahir Majeed, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam leader Taj Muhammad Nahiyon, JUP central vice president Nazim Ali Arain, Shia Ulema Council leader Syed Moazzam Shah Jehanian, Central Muslim League's Umar Farooq, Tehreek Tahaffuz Khatm-e-Nubuwwat's Saif-ur-Rehman, and others. They said Pakistan was founded in the name of Islam, which strictly prescribes modesty for women, and that a public women's marathon was not only un-Islamic but also against Sharia.

Yes, the gravest threat to society in 2025, women jogging in public. :moyo

Forget poverty, unemployment, floods, or corruption but a few kilometers of running will bring civilization to its knees.

Amazing how some leaders can unite across sects when it comes to telling women what not to do, but can’t agree on much else when it comes to improving the country. If a nation feels Islam is in danger because women are breathing fresh air and breaking a sweat, maybe the problem isn’t the marathon but the mindset of the masses who refuse to modernize with time.

Happy Independence Day to the most resilient nation on earth. A country that never gives up and keeps surviving and keeps moving forward.

Thank you for ensuring that I don’t have to call myself Indian and carry the Indian passport as a second class citizen.

Thank you for ensuring that I don’t leave my home with the fear of getting lynched by a Hindu mob.

Thank you for ensuring that I don’t have to live in a country whose PM openly detests my religion.

Not having safety and security in your own country must be one of the worst feelings anyone can experience but thanks to your existence, I don’t know how that feels.

This country will rise and shine long after I am gone. I hope one day it lives up to its immense potential and becomes a prosperous, booming economy.

It doesn’t matter if I live to see it or not — I wish that the future generations of Pakistan get to live in a much more prosperous Pakistan than I did.

Pakistan Zindabad 🇵🇰

🇵🇰 Happy Pakistan Independence Day!
14th August day of pride, unity, and resilience. Let’s honour our past and work for a brighter future. 💚✨ Pakistan Zindabad!

I pray that Allah is pleased with all our Muslim brothers and sisters who were martyred around the time of 14th August 1947 when the mushrikeen of India could not fathom the idea of Pakistan and indiscriminately attacked Muslim women children and men. May Allah accept their sacrifice and continue to give their future generations guidance in this world and the hereafter and courage to stand up for other Muslims in the world going through the same predicament. Ameen.

Nothing prosperous about a country that’s run by the military (even during IK’s term).

Nothing prosperous about a country where half the population lives in poverty.

Nothing prosperous about a country where you don’t have gas for most of the day, that too in major cities of Pakistan.

Let’s be real, Pakistan is a mess just like India.

Leaders, military’s top brass call for national unity, justice in Independence Day messages

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have called for rising beyond divisions and standing united for a Pakistan that is built on justice, equality, and service to all in their separate messages on Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day being celebrated today.

They said the day served as a reminder of courage, unity, and sacrifices that led to the creation of Pakistan and paid homage to founding father, Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, and the workers of the Pakistan Movement for their struggle and sacrifices.

President Zardari emphasised in his message that the nation had “reaffirmed its strength, resolve, and unity in the face of external aggression.”

“Our success in Marka-i-Haq and Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos is a landmark moment in our history,” he said. “It was a demonstration of unshakable national will, professional excellence, and united purpose.”

In July, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal said this year’s Independence Day would be marked as “Marka-i-Haq” (Battle of Truth). The term was used by the Pakistan Army for the conflict with India from the April 22 Pahalgam attack to the May 10 end of Operation Bunyanum Marsoos.

The clash began after India blamed Pakistan for the attack without evidence, leading to air strikes and a week of missile exchanges stretched until a US-brokered ceasefire.

President Zardari continued in his messaged that “faced with unjustified Indian aggression, Pakistan responded with clarity, courage and restraint.

“The world witnessed a nation that is peace-loving, but fully capable of defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

He said that this victory has given the people of Pakistan a sense of renewed confidence. It has lifted the morale of the people, restored faith in our institutions, and enhanced Pakistan’s stature on the global stage, he added.

“Today, the world sees Pakistan as a country that seeks peace but does not bow to coercion.

“But this moment is about more than military success. It is a reminder of what we can achieve when we are united, focused, and committed to a common goal,” the president said.

He urged the nation to channel this spirit into economic revival, educational reform, technological advancement, institutional development, and environmental resilience.

“The same discipline, courage, and clarity that led to our recent success against India can lead us toward victory in eradicating poverty, creating opportunities for our people, and building a just and inclusive society.”

President Zardari also expressed solidarity with the people of Indian Occupied Kashmir, saying “their courage and struggle for justice and their right to self-determination remain close to our hearts.

“Pakistan will continue to extend its unwavering diplomatic, moral, and political support until their right to self-determination is realised.”

In his message, PM Shehbaz paid tribute to Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, and national poet Allama Muhammad Iqbal, who along with other resolute leaders and workers of the Independence Movement, united the nation under one vision, one mission and one goal.

“Their relentless efforts changed the course of the history with the establishment of an independent, ideological state, thus realising a seemingly impossible dream into a reality,” he said in a statement.

“The past 78 years tell a tale of resilience, strong faith and a hope of a bright future when as a nation, we braved several difficult challenges”, he stated. “Despite this, Pakistan achieved a series of milestones of success and achievements in every field.”

He also paid tribute to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the sake of Pakistan’s freedom, saying Marka-i-Haq was not just a military conquest, but also the victory of validation of a Two-Nation Theory.

“Pakistan’s historic victory in Marka-i-Haq during the four-day war imposed by India has not only reinforced the sanctity of our freedom, but has also instilled a renewed sense of ambition and national spirit in the hearts of our people, magnifying the pride and fervour of this Independence Day.”

He continued: “With the blessings of Almighty Allah, our brave armed forces revived their past glory and shattered the false pride of enemy by acting as a Bunyan-um-Marsoos — a solid fortified wall.

“The military capability, valour and faith of our brave soldiers and air warriors forced the enemy to kneel down. We pay tribute to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the sake of our freedom and offer prayers for the elevation of their ranks in eternal life. “

While expressing resolve to protect Pakistan’s sovereignty, PM Shehbaz said “we reiterate our belief in the principles of peaceful coexistence and resolving the regional and global issues through dialogue and diplomacy.

He said India needs to demonstrate the same will for the resolution of all disputes, including the Jammu and Kashmir dispute.

PM Shehbaz also highlighted government’s initiatives for the welfare of the common people including significant cut in the rates of electricity. “The government is utilising all resources to make the country effectively meet the economic, industrial technological demands of the present era.”

He called for demonstrating the spirit of Marka-i-Haq and Pakistan Movement for a strong and stable economy which is inevitable for an impregnable national defence and sovereignty.

Armed forces vow to safeguard Pakistan’s sovereignty, unity

The military top brass congratulated the nation on Independence Day as they vowed to safeguard Pakistan’s sovereignty and unity, according to a statement by Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

“As guardians of national security, we reaffirm our unwavering resolve to safeguard Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, uphold the Constitution, and protect the values that define our national identity,” the statement said.

“The unbreakable bond between the Armed Forces and the people is the cornerstone of our collective strength.”

The military top brass paid homage to the founding fathers and honoured their “indomitable spirit, resolute determination, and unparalleled sacrifices [which] paved the way for independence.”

As the nation celebrates 14th August, hear from our Pakistani players—sharing their pride, hopes, and love for the homeland. Cricket may have its ups and downs, but the spirit of Pakistan remains unshaken.

Jashne Azadi Mubarak to everyone :)

Ma sha Allah. What a brave peope, without a leader, they took to the streets. The victory is very near, in sha Allah.

It should be a day to celebrate and reflect. On the same day we have had a law passed whereby anyone can be disappeared for 3 months. Is this freedom or torture of the PK citizens.

Though the independence and partition was unfair but still happy independence day friends

:kp

Happy Independence Day to all the Pakistanis.

I know that Pakistan has a lot of flaws, but I am glad it exists. Even though I have spent the majority of my life living in the UK, I always feel at home whenever I visit Pakistan.

I hope and pray for a better future for Pakistan. Hopefully, someday, Pakistan will prosper and realise its potential.

PAKISTAN ZINDABAD!!! 🇵🇰

We bleed green, will strive and succeed living in this soil till very last breath.

Absolutely. The RSS would have made the beatings by the Generals and their mafia look like a walk in the park. IA we will achieve Quaids vision of tolerant PK created to serve its people.

Guess who is missing? Who needs Allama Iqbal and Baba-e-Qaum when you have criminals giving each other medals as they jack off each other and hold PK hostage.

The situation in Pakistan politics honestly reminds me of typical crime genre Bollywood movies of the 90s where heroes like Ajay Devgun, Sunil Shetty, Sunny Deol etc were generally fighting a lone battle against the whole system of 7-8 villains including rich men, corrupt political leaders, compromised policemen, local gangsters and their henchmen.

The way Zardaris, Sharifs are jerking each other off and the Army dictator, it’s the most cringe show ever.

True but the PK people have shown spirit no one thought they had. They have been murdered and tortured but they stood with their leader at the point of death. No one knows what the future holds for PK but IA PK will be free from this Qabza mafia and Quaids vision of PK will come to be. The Quaid didn't free us from the British and Hindu rule so that local thugs kill and beat us.

Happy Independence Day to a nation that has not yet realised its potential.
