[PICTURES/VIDEOS] Harry Brook - Star in the making

He owes big to Pakistan tours. Probably would have been sold even otherwise. But not for this price given that this is only a mini auction. You need a lot of attention. Cam Green played well during that T20 series in India. That was enough for him

"My Mother, Grandmother Started Crying": Harry Brook Reacts On Joining Sunrisers Hyderabad

After being acquired by Sunrisers Hyderabad for INR 13.25 cr, England batter Harry Brook expressed his happiness and said he was lost for words and thanked SRH for picking him for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. Brook has been bought by the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season in 2023 for Rs 13.25 crores."Phew! That was fierce England's Harry Brook is SOLD for INR 13.25 Crore to @SunRisers W.O.W," tweeted IPL.

"Hi Orange Army. I am really excited and grateful for this opportunity to come to the IPL this year. I am really looking forward to play for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. I have heard the atmosphere is unbelievable. One of the best grounds in the comp (competition). So, I am really excited for us to be back to Uppal," Brook said in a video posted by Sunrisers Hyderabad on their Twitter handle.

Brook said he was having dinner with his family when SRH bought him. He will make his IPL debut for the 2016 champions next season.

"I have lost words, I was having dinner with my mother and grandmother, they were crying when SRH picked me up. Thank you so much SRH," Brook said.

Brook recently emerged as the leading run-scorer in the Test series against Pakistan, scoring 468 runs at an average of 93.60, with three centuries and one half-century and the best score of 153. He was also given the 'Man of the Series' for his superb performance in the longer format.

Brook was also given the 'Man of the Series' award for his superb show in the seven-match T20I series against the Asian giants that took place in September-October as a part of the tour. In seven innings, he scored 238 runs at an average of 79.33, with one half-century and the best score of 81*.

Brook became the highest-bought player by SRH in this auction and received the third-highest winning bid for an English player after all-rounders Sam Curran (Rs 18.25cr) and Ben Stokes (Rs 16.25cr).

IPL teams value PSL a lot, look how expensive Tim david was sold last year, now Harry brook.

I never heard of Brooks until the recent T20 tour of Pakistan. I was surprised to find he had even played against India. Didn't do that well. It is not PSL. It is more his international T20/Test performances in Pakistan that played a major role. That is why i even posted before auction that he could fetch millions. I know how the ipl auctions work. Most recent performances are valued extremely highly. Guys like Curran who did well against INdia in Tests, Jamieson once again did well against INdia in tests got auctioned for very high price

If Sam Curran is worth this what are the likes of Bumrah etc worth. Silly money for a guy that has done little in the past in the IPL

NOPE.
red hot recent form and/or good performances against india are the two of the key ways to grab the attention of IPL franchises.

What’s there to cry? This is just the beginning for him, anyways.

Why wasn't ben Duckett picked at the same price tag even though he performed well in middle order in the recent T20 series against Pakistan.

PSL is high standard bowling league, the IPL team management know it as well. They trust the standards of PSL. Tim David before PSL was smashing in big bash and other leagues, was bought by RCB for 20 lacs but he was bought at such a high price tag after his PSL performances.

The England middle order is starting to look scarily good, with Root, Brook, Stokes, and Bairstow ready to return.

Nasser Hussain: Brook innings was pure class

Former England captain Nasser Hussain on Sky Sports:

"Brook’s innings today – it was just pure class.

"The positions he was getting in, picking up length off the spinner. This lad is just high class.

"I think Australia, if and when he plays in the Ashes, will try to target him with the short stuff. South Africa often felt that was the way to go.

"This is what’s very impressive from him, is how he picks spin, and the length of spin. We saw that in Pakistan.

"He is a high-class player, this lad, in all formats."

Harry Brook hit five sixes in an over as England warmed up for the first Test against New Zealand with typical aggression in Hamilton.

Brook made 97 of the 465 all out England piled up in only 69.2 overs on day one of the two-day pink-ball match against a New Zealand XI.

After defending the first ball of an over from leg-spinner Adi Ashok, Brook hit the next five balls for maximums.

Bazball or not - Harry Brook is doing his own thing - on his way to his 4th Test 100 in his 4th Test! - currently 79*(64)

Harry Brook is heading for greatness. He will etch his name in the history books.

Best England batsman ever in my opinion. He is a mix of Root and Pietersen. England have finally produced a batsman who belongs in the league of Sir Viv, Ponting, Lara, Kohli etc.

Others can wait for 10 years before making such comparisons but I have seen what I need to see. He has everything, and only career-threatening injuries can stop him.

Eventually out for 89

But what a shot this was

After four tests?

Hyperbole much?

Brook appears to be possibly as good as Pietersen was when he burst onto the international scene in 04/05. And I don’t make that comparison lightly. A special talent.

I have said it from the start when Brook burst on the scene with that splendid century in the PSL that he will go to the top and dare I say even surpass Pietersen as a batsmen that’s how good I think Brook is. England will rule white ball cricket alongside India for the next decade

04-05 Pietersen was laying onto McGrath, Gillespie, Lee, Warne, Steyn, Ntini, Pollock etc. Harry Brook has done nothing compared to that.

Yet another 50.

Absolutely dismantled the bowling.

What a player he is.

Closing in on a near run-a-ball century on a green mamba here in NZ. This is a ridiculously talented batter.

Don’t sleep on this kid.

I think he is the Lionel Messi of English cricket. We could be witnessing the birth of the greatest of all time.

Ended Day 1 on 184*

He has left huge scars on NZ. He has potentially ended a career here. Today in the commentary McMillan was discussing about Wagner's career. NZ has to bite the bullet and let him go.

We truly are witnessing a VVS rare talent. It's scary to think how good this guy is at the beginning of his career. If he doesn't become the era defining guy of his generation it will be a huge injustice. I can clearly see why people are comparing him with the 05 version of KP. Even though KP had to deal with GOAT bowling attacks of Aus & SA, that doesn't take anything away from Brooke. The knock that he has played today on a mamba like this should clear all the doubts of him being just a FTB. It's too early & I don't want to jinx him but I think we are finally witnessing a guy who can be termed as the next "Viv". KP & Shewag could have been those guys but due to attitude & complacency they couldn't reach that level even though both are certified ATG. I am happy for him & for Eng as they have been refreshing the game for last 8 years.

Mauling Australia in the Ashes this summer would truly elevate him to superstar status. This could be his series.

Perhaps. Had he converted that 83 in the first Kiwi test he would have five centuries in his first five tests. Barrington got four in his first four and ended up with average 58.

Previously, the record for most runs after 9 Test innings belonged to India's Vinod Kambli (798) but Brook took his tally to 807 on Friday. He also went past legends like Herbert Sutcliffe (780 runs in nine innings), Sunil Gavaskar (778 runs in nine innings) and Everton Weekes (777 runs in nine innings) to add a massive milestone to his name.

Another wonderful innings. Will take Root's spot when he retires.

Only question is, how will he fare in what will be his biggest challenge? Facing Ashwin & Co. in India.

No question about talent. But will he put in the time to develop the technique to play high quality spin on Indian tracks? Will he be up to the challenge?

Seems to be oozing more class and quality every single passing inns, no matter what the conditions he plays positively and dominates the bowling. He's only going to get better as well.

He is lucky to have McCullum as his coach , he is batting him but only better and far more consistent. Imagine if he had someone like Misbah as his coach/captain.

I wasn't convinced and I won't be fully convinced until he comes up against real pace and some decent spin. But what he is doing against what he has faced is amazing. Just hope we get some decent pitches in the summer against Aus and not the ones we have seen for pretty much the last decade and a bit

That is tough as Macca said. He has to maintain average 100 to get better. Can he do it over a period?

Obviously he is not going to average >100 against Australia but if he can come away from those five Tests with a series average of over 50 then he will have done pretty well.

Harry Brook is a serious talent, he is the next big thing. Now averages 100+ in test cricket, that is just unbelievable.

A generational talent, the depths of the English aggressive batting ranks is stunning.

Eoin Morgan deserves a knighthood.

Finally someone who can compete with Rishabh Pant in tests.
2024" test series in India would be amazing.

He will be the GOAT all format player.

Hold your horses! Remember Ben Stokes played an outrageous 250 of some 170 balls in Southern Afrika. Brooks has scored his best 180 odd at slightly over run a ball.

God forbid if that ever happens! Misbah would have ruined him completely. He would have restrained his stroke playing & forced him to be more "disciplined" & "orthodox". He would have instructed him to follow the template of Azhar Ali as he thinks Azhar is the perfect example of how a test batsman should conduct.

He's going well but hasn't been tested much yet.

He mostly played on flat pitches or SENA pitches. His real test would be dust bowl pitches or other difficult pitches.

He did do well in the tour of Pakitan. But his biggest challenge lies in India. Have to wait and see how he does there.

Given his style of batting, has he been picked by the IPL or PSL or any other L?

He played last year's edition of PSL for Lahore. Scored his maiden T20 century in it.

This fraud gave up on the PSL after one year—after benefiting massively from it.

A nobody in 2022, now a upcoming star in 2023. He ditched the PSL like an eloping Juliet who abandons her own kin for a luring hoodlum.

PSL franchises should be really careful of selecting grifters and opportunists like him.

lol, like scoring 1000 championship runs at 100 in fc cricket had nothing to do with his selection. playing the psl helped him adjust to Pakistani conditions, but its not the making of him.

i dont think any england player would choose the PSL over national team duty, hence why there arent any good english players in the league this season.

pretty sure if the PSL wasn't immediately before the IPL and during an England tour he would have played again.

There are no international matches of England cricket team. Besides their tour of Bangladesh which barely started, and Harry Brook isn’t taking a part of it.

This guy is currently in Florida, attending some MLB clown show & learning some “bazball” from a non-cricketing team.

he was playing tests for the first half of the PSL, why would he come play the second half of the PSL straight after tests and before playing the IPL, makes no sense, not being an opportunist or a grifter, its smart workload management.

International cricket definitely needs a new generation of fab four-five-six whatever. Brook seems to be the first one from his generation. Let's see who joins him.

Harry Brook: England batter on Ashes sledging, baseball and his early career

If you were asked to pick one current England cricketer to play baseball, you'd probably choose Harry Brook.

Before long a seat in the stands to watch the Yorkshireman bat will come with a public health warning.

Since last summer he has made the best start to a Test career by any batter in recent memory, become a T20 World Cup winner, an Indian Premier League millionaire and now trained with the St Louis Cardinals baseball team.

"I struck them alright," the 24-year-old says. "I was hitting into the wind. I'm getting my excuses out there now."

Brook has never watched a game but is now an ambassador with Major League Baseball. The Cardinals play the Chicago Cubs at the London Stadium in June, a series which will be shown live on the BBC.

On a whistle-stop trip to Florida, he trained with the Cardinals as they prepared for an MLB game.

"I have quite high hands when batting but in baseball they wanted to get them above my head nearly," Brook says.

"I am used to hitting it through point and they had all of the TVs and iPads up where I would usually hit the ball.

"They were getting quite scared."

With a cricket bat in hand, Brook has made a habit of clearing the ropes. In a warm-up match in New Zealand last month he hit a leg-spinner for five sixes in an over.

"I was wishing I didn't block the first ball," he says.

"The first ball it was instinct. We had a short boundary to the leg side and he bowled it quite nicely. The next balls weren't so good so I put them away."

That matter-of-fact analysis sums up Brook's uncomplicated nature as a person and a batter.

In interviews he is straight-talking and to the point, but answers almost have to be prised from him.

As a batter he has a simple technique, to the untrained eye at least, and when he gets on one of those six-hitting sprees there is little else in his mind.

"After three or four in a row you are thinking 'let's do this' - let's get five or six," Brook says.

The result has been Brook launching assaults on a record held by a man he admits "he had never heard of" before last year's pre-Christmas series against Pakistan.

Gilbert Jessop, whose 76-ball century against Australia in 1902 is the fastest by an England player in Tests, is now under constant threat, not just by Brook but also from many of his England's team-mates, given the new attacking approach under captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum.

"Not at the start [of an innings], but when I do get close I would be lying if I said I wasn't thinking about it," Brook says. "It is in the back of my mind."

Brook, whose next assignment is the IPL where he has been signed by Sunrisers Hyderabad for £1.35m, has always been highly-rated, ever since he became Yorkshire's fourth-youngest centurion with a hundred against Essex as a 19-year-old in 2019.

His ability with bat in hand is obvious. He has also worked hard to hone a calm temperament.

"I have worked on that side of the game massively," he says.

"I broke my hand when I was in the Under-19s, punched a table, and that was a bit of turning point. Ever since then I have just sat down, put my bat and stuff away and cracked on."

If that story sounds familiar it is because Stokes did something similar, when he broke his hand punching a locker and missed the 2014 T20 World Cup.

The all-rounder will lead England in the Ashes against Australia this summer, with Brook surely now inked in as a key man.

Assuming he plays, the first Test will be Brook's first experience of Ashes cricket - he has not even attended a day as a fan.

He has, however, gained some experience of Australian cricket culture after spending a winter in Sydney playing grade cricket.

"No matter what level, they are very competitive people," Brook says.

"Some of them probably think they are a little bit better than they are.

"There was a lot were saying they could have played first-class cricket in England when they were just playing grade cricket in Australia."

In Sydney, Brook averaged more than 50. He also got an introduction to another Ashes classic, the sledge, albeit not as much as he might have.

"There were little bits, one or two games, where there were fairly big sledges," Brook says. "I don't sledge but I have copped a bit in my time.

"I scored quite a few runs. People don't tend to give you much when you are scoring runs."

So will he be ready for anything sent his way in the Ashes?

"To be honest I don't care - I really don't care," he says with a smile.

"The way I am going to play, the way we are playing, we will look to be positive and put pressure on them.

"If they bowl a bad ball I will try and hit it for four or six.

"It doesn't matter who you are - whether you are the best bowler in the world."

As baseball legend Babe Ruth said: "Don't let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game."

He will come good. This time they play home/away matches after a while. So he will get exposed to variety of pitches, bowlers. Swing, seam, turn, bounce. He will also have the pressure of being part of one of the weakest batting line up. pressure of price tag to boot. Having said that Chahal has got the better of him in each encounters (international & ipl). May be there is a weakness somewhere against leg spin.

Looked bit nervous today, think the crowd and the magnitude of the event got better off him but he is a top class player and would come good. Hyderabad team should persist with him.

Sometimes when you play for a pathetic batting unit your level also goes down. SRH has obviously the worst batting unit for years

Looks like against good bowling ,his class or lack of it will soon be known to public. He scored against toothless pakistani bowling on flattest wickets ever and same happened in psl. He will be tested in the real competitive tournament like IPL.

Has to be careful not to become another Zak Crawley - overhyped after whooping a pathetic Pakistan bowling attack. I think he'll come good though.

I only watched the 2nd innings and the pitch was looking very hard to bat on. Pace and bounce and spinning. Even Jason Holder was looking like Malcom Marshall.

I agree he will come good.
