[PICTURES/VIDEOS] James Anderson retires from Test cricket with 704 wickets to his name

Sportsmen can age almost overnight. A player knows when time's up. He's 40 doing one of the worst things to a body possible being a pace bowler, however 'slow' comparatively.

He's looking stiffer and stiffer with each passing day. The end is nigh!

Nasser Hussain on Jimmy Anderson:

"Chris Woakes has stated that he's not that keen anymore of playing away from home and his record's not great away from home.

"We'll see, he (Woakes) might change his mind. There's been a lot of mind changes recently. But if you don't have Woakes and you don't have Broad, you will need that experience of someone like Jimmy Anderson."

Anderson has an excellent record against India, with six of his 32 five-wicket hauls in Tests coming against Rohit Sharma’s side and his average in the Asian country (29.32) is decent in comparison to other places he has played in.

"Jimmy's got a very good record against India…and you need a balanced attack. You need that experience for younger players to come in,” Hussain noted.

"Listen, Jimmy's had a bad or an average couple of months, but you are a fool if you're writing off Jimmy Anderson.

"I spoke to him in an interview yesterday and he was like, the hunger is still there. He's already thinking about how to get back to his best.

"He's already thinking about going back in the nets and working hard at his game and that's a good sign for me that he's still got that hunger. He's, what, 10 wickets away from 700, and that will keep him going for a while yet."

He looked jaded in the Ashes.

Pace was down, didn't swing the ball much either.

Yes he was a bit unlucky at times, but he was struggling.

Can't be long before he calls it a day!

Great bowler but nearly run out of road.

He should go gracefully and not hang around.

He didn't bowl too badly during the Ashes. At times, he was unlucky and could have picked up a few more wickets on another day. I am not going to say that he needs to retire after one bad series.

Should have retired with Broad and MA. Looks off the pace and is playing for records

He’s chasing the 700.

Which on an individual level I do understand.

But it’s inconsistent with the team-first ethos that Stokes and McCullum are trying to promote.

He's just doing what kapil dev did, selfishly playing on and hogging a spot in team he no longer deserves

It looks undignified for a guy that is amongst the greatest ever. I always thought This record chasing was more of a desi thing but obviously not.

As per a news report, James Anderson has been offered a new England central contract at the age of 41!

Are England that desperate?

Believe it or not, this is a 41-year-old player

Bumrah with a sly on Anderson in his interview with some UK newspaper.

It’s credit to him [he is still playing at 41], a testament to his hunger and passion. It’s one thing having helpful conditions but to keep doing all that preparation. Skill, technique can be learned but the will to keep going, that’s a big, big tick for me.”

Jimie is back in the side for the 2nd test against India as he replaces Mark Wood who did nothing with the ball in the opening game of the 5-match series against India.

Let's see how this veteran makes his presence felt. I think he will do much better than what Wood did. He is always a treat to watch.

Let's see. I'm not sure how much swing India will have to offer Anderson, but hope the 41 year old does well.

It would be so difficult for him to bowl on dead wickets but let's see how he makes his experience count here.

James Anderson is now just 9 wickets away from joining Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne in the 700 club

James Anderson has at least one Test wicket every year since 2003 till now. Fabulous consistency and resilience.

Anderson removed Ashwin as day 2 of the 2nd test match of the series in ongoing now. This guy is evergreen just like Shahid Afridi and is consistent as well. Got his 2nd wicket of the match. Superb stuff

What a wonderful start by Anderson on day 3. Removed both the openers of India. Most prized wicket was of Jaiswal, they guy who scored 200 in the 1st innings.

Anderson has a great habit of picking wickets and he still got it.

Anderson: I still have the hunger to play on

"You know out here, as a seamer, you've got a limited chance to bowl."

"I focus on every ball, try to be in the right spot and bowl good balls every time. Sometimes it comes off, sometimes it doesn't but today, fortunately, I managed to get a couple of early ones and it set us off well, allowing the spinners to do their thing from the other end."

"I still love playing the game and I still have the hunger - and playing in this dressing room at the minute keeps more going that little bit more."

"I love this group of blokes. The captain and coach have got a great thing going at the minute and it's a really fun thing to be part of."

Hats off to Anderson. Never imagined that he could bowl so well when 40 plus years old. What a sight to see him bowl.

I hope he will surpass Shane Warne's 708 wickets. He is now less than 15 wickets away.

Legend.

absolute legend, one of a kind test maestro, i hope he keeps playing as long as hes fit enough. with SL and WI coming over in the summer i have no doubt he'll smash through 700 test wickets.

He now has 695 Test wickets. I think he can reach 700 wickets during this series (3 more Tests to go after this).

He may go past Warne during SL and WI series.

Never could have imagined he’d still be playing and still bowling so well. Truly an incredible achievement.

I still remember young James Anderson in 2003 World Cup. Who would've thought he would still be playing in year 2024 with a tally of 695 Test wickets?

I have a feeling Anderson's record may not be broken by any other pacer considering T20 is taking over.

He looks in the shape of his career, 700 Test wickets is a near certainty from here, and I think he should just carry on for as long as he wants and is good enough to. Pure class.

He should feel incredibly proud and fortunate to have been born in England; otherwise, he might have been discarded after maybe 100 tests at most if he were from India or Pakistan. The England board has truly taken care of him and managed his workload extremely well. Additionally, England has played an immense amount of test cricket in the last 20 years, and his decision to retire from white-ball cricket at the right time and not participate in the IPL has contributed to his success.

I remember that he was a rather average bowler outside of English conditions for most of his career but in last 5 years or so he has improved his stats greatly outside england.

Jimmy is an absolute legend, no ones going to get near his record. Unbelievable consistency, longevity and fitness

England's experienced right-arm seamer James Anderson is just five more scalps away from 700 Test wickets as he prepares himself for the third Test of the ongoing five-match Test series against India at Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Rajkot. Anderson has snapped a total of 695 wickets so far in the 184 matches he has played for his national side at an average of 26.34 where he has conceded runs at an economy of 2.78 with 32 four-wicket hauls and 32 five-wicket hauls. If he completes this landmark, he will become the first seamer to do so and third overall after legendary spinners Muttiah Muralitharan (800) and Shane Warne (708).

England's James Anderson is currently on 695 Test wickets and is closing in on another big milestone.

He almost had Sharma trapped lbw, and it was given out on the field by umpire Joe Wilson, but India's skipper immediately reviewed and the reply showed the bat was involved.

And the crazy thing is over the last 10 years his record in Asia on flatter pitches has drastically improved.

Insane economy. Very hard to hit him even now.

‘You are not studying soon, go on a long holiday’ - Ravi Shastri’s hilarious reply to fan over message for James Anderson

James Anderson is showing no signs of slowing down as the veteran picked up six wickets in the two Tests he has played against India in the ongoing series. In his third match, Anderson picked up the wicket of India skipper Rohit Sharma to make it seven as the pacer has troubled the Indian batters so far in the five-match series.

Meanwhile, right before England began their innings with the ball, the focus was on a particular poster in Ranchi, which read, ‘I will start to study when James Anderson retires’. Looking at that poster, former India cricketer Ravi Shastri commented that Anderson is nowhere close to his retirement and advised the fan to go on a holiday instead.

“You've got to wait, young man. You are not studying soon, go on a long holiday. It is not happening any time soon,” Shastri said on air.

Anderson made his Test debut in 2003 before his teammates Rehan Ahmed and Shoaib Bashir were even born. Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was just one year old at that time, which shows his longevity in the game. Being a seamer, it is difficult to continue playing for 21 years but the Burnley-born cricketer never showed signs of slowing down and continued his dominance in international cricket.

Speaking about the same, Shastri mentioned that the cricketer deserves respect for his sheer longevity. “Got to respect and admire the individual for his sheer longevity. To be around for so long and continue playing at the top level is superb,” Shastri added in the commentary box.

Meanwhile, despite losing an early wicket, India looked to be in firm control of the match. Youngsters Jaiswal and Shubman Gill built a partnership of 82 runs, which gave the hosts some much-needed momentum. Jaiswal meanwhile went on to hit a half-century but he didn't receive a lot of support from the other end.

Anderson has his 698th in Test cricket as he cleans Kuldeep Yadav to break the partnership of 76 runs between Yadav and Dhruv Jurel. He is now just 2 wickets away from a milestone of 700 test wickers.

Feels like this might be the game where he gets his 700th wicket.

Veteran England pacer James Anderson, during an interview with a local Indian media outlet, says:

"You always want to play against the best players. And it's been a shame that he's not been a part of the series. We have had some great battles over the years."

"With someone of his quality, you expect that standard from him. You know that reverse swing can play a big part in India and he's a great exponent of it. He's got a good pace and is very accurate, and very consistent. That yorker we saw to Ollie Pope, he's got that up his sleeve as well. It's not a fluke that he's got to number one in the world. He's a world-class bowler and from our point of view we weren't surprised that he put up a performance like that."

"There are not many better bowlers than Bumrah, Shami and Siraj. They're world-class bowlers. You put Ishant Sharma in there as well, and that's a really strong bowling attack."

"For me, Zaheer Khan was someone I used to watch a lot to try and learn from. How he used the reverse swing, how he covered the ball when he ran into bowl, that's something I tried to sort of develop on the back of playing against him quite a few times here."

"I guess you do look at things like that, but to be honest, I just go with the feel of me and my body. I don't feel like I'm 41 years and 200 days old. You know, I still feel young. I can keep up with the young guys in training. I can still bowl at the speeds that I want to, I can still deliver the skills that I want to. So, for me, that's the most important thing. Age is just a number and it's pretty irrelevant from my thought process."

James Anderson will become the first England cricketer to make 400 international appearances when he takes to the field against India in Dharamsala.

The 41-year-old is the 39th player to reach the milestone. India's Sachin Tendulkar is the runaway leader, with 664 appearances.

To date, Anderson has featured in 186 Tests, 194 ODIs and 19 T20Is, taking 985 wickets - itself a record for an English bowler and a haul bettered by only Muttiah Muralitharan (1,347) and Shane Warne (1,001).

Gill's wicket today moves Anderson on to 699 Test wickets. Just 1 away from a landmark which is a dream for many out there.

Former England captain Sir Alastair Cook, speaking on TNT Sport:

"We keep waiting for this magic moment.

"If he does get that milestone, what an incredible achievement it will be for the greatest bowler England have ever seen."

He doesn't need any league. He has his own league and is playing hard. Probably, he will also dismiss the grandson of Sachin Tendulkar 😁

A magic milestone and a piece of Test cricket history as James Anderson becomes only the third player to take 700 wickets.

The other two on that list? Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne. Pretty good company to be in!

Well done.

Congratulations to the legend.

He is just 9 wickets away from going past Warne.

His career started off relatively slowly - it took him five years to take his 100th Test wicket and now he has 700 wickets to his name. Absolute legend of the game.

Indeed.

He was ordinary for the first few years. But, he managed to turn things around.

I think his great fitness helped him to achieve this great feat.

Staggering achievement... and I was applauding Jimmy when he got Kuldeep even though I am a hardcore Indian cricket fan. Thorough professional and ofcourse a freak of nature.👏

England captain Stokes showed his admiration for his colleague, he said after 5th Test match against India:

"Amazing to be on the field,I've been lucky enough to be on the field for some of the milestones that Jimmy's got to, but being there for 700 wickets as a seamer is quite phenomenal."

"I've said many times that he's someone that every kid who wants to be a fast bowler should look up to and try and emulate everything that he has done. From the first day he started being a cricketer, let alone being an international cricket, to where he is now."

Biggest achievement for him is at the age of 41 he can be called the best bowler in England (Fast or spin). He is in ICC's top 10 rankings. Only English bowler to be there. Unlike a lot of fast bowlers who were playing past by sell date he is still very much serviceable.

Age is just a number for this legend!

with such stats he can play for another 2 to 3 years.

Looks like Anderson is not planning to retire anytime soon.

Anderson eyes big English summer following 700th Test scalp in India

The veteran pacer is keen to lock down his place in England's side for upcoming series against the West Indies and Sri Lanka.

England seamer James Anderson has played down his efforts of becoming the first fast bowler to claim 700 Test wickets and has instead set his sights on retaining his place in the side for upcoming Test series against the West Indies and Sri Lanka.

Anderson recently became the first pacer and just the third player overall behind Muttiah Muralitharan (800) and Shane Warne (708) to reach the 700-wicket milestone. but the 41-year-old suggested the feat meant little to him as England fell to a 4-1 series defeat in the crucial ICC World Test Championship series.

While Anderson was among England's best bowlers during the series with a total of 10 scalps at an average of 33.50 and brought up his 700th Test scalp in the final Test in Dharamsala, the right-armer admitted a hollow feeling of sorts given how badly England fell away in the backend of the five-match series.

"It was a nice moment and nice to do it at a picturesque ground," Anderson told his colleagues on BBC's Tailenders Podcast when asked about reaching 700 Test wickets.

"My dad was here so I had a drink with my dad, which was nice. He was more excited than I was.

"Maybe I would've felt more excited if we'd won the Test or the series."

While England have a break until July before they take on their next World Test Championship opponents, Anderson is ready to get back to training and work hard to try and make sure he is among the first picked when his side takes on the West Indies and Sri Lanka in the three-Test series at home this summer.

Anderson will turn 42 during the three-Test series with the West Indies in July and will be facing ongoing pressure from the likes of Mark Wood, Ollie Robinson, Josh Tongue, Chris Woakes and Gus Atkinson for spots among England's pace attack.

But Anderson was happy with how he bowled during the India series and is confident he can replicate that at home this summer if given the chance to once again lead England's bowling group.

"I'm not getting any worse," Anderson added.

"I'm definitely in the best shape I've ever been in.

"I like where my game is at and I still have that enjoyment of turning up every day and trying to get better in the nets.

"My place in the team is not a given so I've got to work hard to prove I'm worth a place in the summer."

Sad to see, No Pakistani bowler is in this list

Don’t worry mate, make it a top 15 and just get rid of Murali, Ashwin, Harbajan and am starting to suspect Kumble too these days, get rid off all these fake frauds and a Pakistani will start to appear in the list :)

Is Anderson needed? I saw this on twitter. This tweet has a point. He didn't play one Test. They should move on with new players win or lose.

England sent down 5,329 legal balls at India on this tour. Anderson bowled only 660 of those and took just 10 wickets at 33.35. Once again, for all the longevity talks, he was not in play enough to make any impact. England are happy prolonging his Test career at their expense.

There is a big thread on how Anderson's average was protected by bazball group. THey didn't give him enough overs where he is not that much of use. He has bowled 17.5 overs on an average for Bazball team. Taken 1.76 wickets per test. But miraculously average is very good.

His SC average is akin to batsman having good average due to notouts..

I think they have young faces like Potts, Tongue, Atkinson. Not sure why they are so reluctant to let Jimmy go. If they are going to protect his average it will only harm the team and other bowlers more. I remember Bashir bowling a 38 over spell or something.

James Anderson is an anomaly of the nature. Players lose their mojo as they grow older and he has done the exact opposite. And that’s even more amazing for a pace bowler. Hats off to this all time great!
Often we turn sour and under appreciate a player from a rival team, but honestly in our hearts we all know and acknowledge greatness when we see it even if we don’t say it out loud. Anderson is one such player.
Initially when he played, especially against India in India, I did not rate him as highly. But look what he has become! How he has evolved! How he has become a more thinking bowler to prize out wickets in somewhat less helpful conditions!
Longevity is not appreciated enough.
These players have such a long career not because they’re some higher up’s favorites but because they were good enough to begin when they did and are good enough to continue playing until they can’t. Anderson is one who I have grown to admire over the last 8-10 years as someone who has continued to adapt and improve, and his record speaks for itself. Let’s get over the pettiness some of us harbor and celebrate a true great of the game till the time he decides to call it that. A big well done to an ATG!

Last 16 bowling innings, he has taken 15 wickets at an average of 56.

Would be very selfish of him to keep continuing.

England need to develop a fresh bowling attack keeping the Australian Ashes in mind and get some experience in them.

Former England captain Geoffrey Boycott has made a scathing attack on Ben Stokes and co after their dismal show in the recently-concluded five-match Test series against India.

England started the five-match series with a win at Hyderabad but it went progressively worse for them and ended up losing the series 1-4.

“Stokes says they will learn from this tour. I am not convinced. They will go back home and revert to type and beat ordinary West Indies and Sri Lanka teams and India will be forgotten as a distant memory, “wrote Boycott in his column in The Telegraph.

England's Joe Root plays a shot on the first day of the fourth Test cricket match between India and England, at the JSCA International Stadium Complex, in Ranchi, Friday.

Boycott was also critical of the overtly aggressive approach of England batters in the series.

“They (English batters) were not confident of their ability to defend, especially with fielders around the bat, so they looked to attack instead. That idea is fraught with danger against quality spinners,” he wrote.

Boycott also warned the England team management to must look ahead of James Anderson.

“Jimmy Anderson deserves all the adulation and plaudits for staying fit to play 187 Test matches and reach 700 wickets,” said Boycott.

“England cannot keep wrapping him in cotton wool and picking him on sentiment forever. In a year-and-a-half England’s next big challenge will be going to Australia to try and win back the Ashes.

“Jimmy will be 43 by the next Ashes and I don’t see him being able to do the hard yards on tough, bone hard pitches and in hot weather. England have to find some young seamers who can bowl 20 overs and come back the next day ready for more.”

Source: Times of India

Anderson shold call it a day. Last 12 months, he has played 8 tests with 10-15 wickets at avefrage of 50.

That stats in itself is not the reason for Anderson to call it a day. I think Anderson may have trouble if he is one of the main 4 bowlers. If Eng plays 5 then he can play otherwise Eng will be putting too much pressur on other 3 bowles to bowl overs. Root reluctantly bowled so many overs in Indian series and those young spinners often bowled very long spells.

He was playing to just chase 700 wickets and now playing to overtake Warne, but Eng should look for replacement. Spinners won't be able to bowl so many overs in Aus.

Anderson has the perfect time to call it a day now. No need to prolong his career and ruin his wonderful career of going out and having a poor end. He has achieved what many fast bowlers might not be able to achieve in next decade.
