An absolutely disastrous campaign for them in PSL 7, winning just 1 match and losing 9.

With Imad Wasim back at the helm and Johan Botha coming in as Head Coach, can this squad bounce back?

Look stronger.

Better choice as skipper and Botha is a good coach.

Some depth there too.

1. Sharjeel
2. Tayyab
3. Vince (os)
4. Haider
5. Malik
6. Wade (os)
7. Imad
8. Fuller (os)
9. Amir
10. Mir Hamza
11. Tahir (os)

Decent XI

I think the team will vary on how well Haider & Qasim Akram perform.

Overall, the squad looks decent but questions remain with their fast bowlers. Seem to be fine powerplay wise but they severely lack death bowlers or great wicket taking options unless Shamzi come up big for them.

Love the Niazi pick by Karachi too. He's a big power bat and has plenty of potential.

Need a emerging category player in thier.

Must say, they probably should have signed better overseas players. Anyway.

1. Tayyab Tahir
2. Matthew Wade (WK)(F)
3. Haider Ali
4. James Vince (F)
5. Qasim Akram (E)
6. Shoaib Malik
7. Imad Wasim (C)
8. Mohammad Umar
9. Andrew The (F)
10. Mir Hamza
11. Tabraiz Shamsi (F)

Don't want to see M.Amir play nor Sharjeel Khan.

Should change the name from Karachi Kings to Karachi Uncles, disgusting to see this team of ancient old men representing what should be the biggest market of PSL. Should’ve brought in Ifti chacha and played him in the emerging category, looks like a youngster amongst these seniors

Great Fantasy XI

The reality is, KK have built their team around Sharjeel whether you like it or not

Funny thing is, they’ve got a better T20 batting line up than our national team.

Wait Rana???

Are you telling me, you don't like my team?

The team is decent but Sharjeel and Amir have to play. They are two of the best T20 cricketers in Pakistan. You can’t keep them out because of personal sentiments.

Sharjeel has 5 domestic T20 hundreds and Amir is one of the most economical fast bowlers in franchise cricket. They are two key players for KK and Imad Wasim backs them to the core

Hmm interesting points.

Personally don't have anything against the two. Just think Amir should be quiet and focus on his game.

As for Sharjeel, he probably should have worked on his fitness a lot earlier, specially when he was banned.

Supplementary and replacements picks on Wednesday (25 January 2023):

Karachi Kings – Supplementary: Ben Cutting and Musa Khan. Replacement: Faisal Akram

How are other teams managing to get players like Will Jacks in their supplementary pick whilst KK have got Musa Khan!

Will Jacks is better than many of the current overseas roster in PSL

Uhhhh well... interesting picks.

I think Ben Cutting is a good pick but, they could've gone for a younger allrounder or overall better players.

Final squad:

Haider Ali, Imad Wasim, Mohammad Amir, Shoaib Malik, Aamir Yamin, Mir Hamza, Sharjeel Khan, Qasim Akram, Matthew Wade, Imran Tahir, James Vince, James Fuller, Andrew Tye, Tayyab Tahir, Mohammad Akhlaq, Muhammad Irfan Khan, Tabraiz Shamsi, Mohammad Umar, Ben Cutting, Musa Khan

Faisal Akram (partial replacement for Tabraiz Shamsi)

Many thanks to [MENTION=2016]Rana[/MENTION] for his preview of the upcoming season.

Karachi Kings

All eyes of Pakistan and the world will be on Karachi Kings this year. The one-time champions of PSL had an abysmal season last year under the national skipper Babar Azam. To their relief, Babar has moved on and the natural leader of the squad Imad Wasim is back, and he will be hungry to prove many of his doubters wrong. Imad is not alone in his fight; outcasts Mohammad Amir and Sharjeel Khan have now got the opportunity to also stake a claim into the national side as long as their performances are up to the mark. Besides the fact that the Kings boast of some highly experienced T20 specialists this year and better leadership, the Kings have assembled a squad that should provide them with a better opportunity for the play offs unlike their horror show of last year.

One of the big transfer stories of the pre-draft window was the trade of Haider Ali to Karachi in the Platinum category. The highly talented top order batsman knows that time and opportunities for him to impress are running out. This is a highly important stint for Haider in his resurgence for national favor and his own self-confidence. The acquisition of Imran Tahir is a is a clever move by the KK think tank, as they have picked one of the most experienced leg spinner/wicket-taker in T20 cricket. Tahir, alongside Imad and Amir make three of the best bowlers out of a required 5-man attack. Mir Hamza should also make the cut and he will be one to look out for, as he was very impressive for Kings last year after being called up when most of the bowling resources had become unavailable them.

The LQ captain Shaheen Afridi has challenged Mathew Wade to open the innings for KK after being embarrassed by the Aussie keeper/finisher in the haunting 2021 world cup semi-final clash. It will be interesting to see how KK want to use Wade, who is a fine stroke maker and an excellent player of pace bowling at the death. One would hope to see Muhammad Akhlaq being given a chance to open the innings with Sharjeel Khan. Akhlaq is an underrated keeper batsman who likes to take the game on by hitting big, this is a vital opportunity for him to show the world what he is truly made of. The young gun Qasim Akram has been continuing to grow and improve as a batter in the domestic circuit, showing is appetite to score fast and score big when he gets going. The highly talented youngster has the experience of Shoaib Malik, his senior at Central Punjab to guide him into becoming a vital middle order-batting all-rounder for KK and eventually for Pakistan hopefully.

Full Squad:

Haider Ali, Imad Wasim, Mohammad Amir, Shoaib Malik, Aamir Yamin, Mir Hamza, Sharjeel Khan, Qasim Akram, Matthew Wade, Imran Tahir, James Vince, James Fuller, Andrew Tye, Tayyab Tahir, Mohammad Akhlaq, Muhammad Irfan Khan, Tabraiz Shamsi, Mohammad Umar, Ben Cutting, Musa Khan

Faisal Akram (partial replacement for Tabraiz Shamsi)

It's going to be interesting to see how they do.

Quite a few players with points to prove to the selectors.

Karachi Kings have draftee Adam Rossington in place of James Vince who will miss KK’s 7, 8 and 9 matches due to his inclusion in England’s ODI squad

KK picks have been baffling for 2 years straight now. Wonder if the stat king Mazher Arshad has a role in it.

What a weird pick considering IU picked Rassie Van Dussen

Lesser name but a career 145 SR in his T20 career and is doing quite well in SA20 league.

Appears to be a solid hard hitting opening WK option for Karachi.

Didn't go well with the likes of Cockbain, Lammonby and a few others.

As someone from Karachi it pains me to see what Salman Iqbal and Wasim Akram are doing to this team. What should be the most marketable and lucrative franchise is instead home to a group of fixers, snakes, ancient uncles and obese players. On top of that this franchise never promotes any young local talent (which all the other franchises have somewhat accomplished), in fact the whole squad only has 2 Karachi-origin players (1 of whom won’t even see the field). Might as well call them the Punjab Kings and shift them to Faisalabad or something at this point, Karachiites can relate more to Quetta Gladiators than to this pathetic team.

Head coach Johan Botha & assistant coach Michael Smith have arrived in Karachi.

Ben Cutting speaking to the media:

“We love coming here. This is my fifth visit to Pakistan. I think it's Aaron's fifth or sixth as well. So, we look forward to it every year. Coming back to the PSL and the country of Pakistan and the hospitality, the standard of cricket is awesome"

“I'm really looking forward to getting back out there in front of the full house, wherever we play, whether it's Karachi, Multan, now Lahore, Islamabad. It can be very exciting to roll out in front of a local crowd again"

“A lot of guys that haven't been here and played the PSL always ask me what it's like and the quality of cricket is second to none. You know, every team has got three or four guys that bowl at 140/145. They’ve got excellent spinners and all batters can smack it out of the park. So, it's always going to be difficult as a bowler you know taking on your caliber of batters"

“You got to take what happened in previous seasons for every team with a grain of salt, because the squads are different, the conditions are different. It's a little bit cool this year. So, we're not going to look back, We're going to look forward. I'd like the first couple of games and get into the tournament because what happened last year doesn't really matter"

“Obviously it's a bit of a loss to Karachi, but yeah, we fill that gap very, very well"

Karachi Kings could win a solitary game in the last edition of the HBL Pakistan Super League and the champions of the 2020 season are eager to bring out their A game when the HBL PSL 8 kicks off in Multan on Monday.

Johan Botha will take up their head coach duties after serving in the similar role for Multan Sultans (2019) and Islamabad United (2021). He was the assistant coach at Karachi Kings in HBL PSL 5, the edition when they lifted the title.

He spoke to PCB Digital about how Karachi Kings can turn around their fortunes, how they will replace Babar Azam, the most successful batter in the tournament, and what makes the HBL PSL one of the best leagues in the world.

This is your third HBL PSL franchise as a head coach. How has your experience been so far in the tournament?

I have had some great experiences in the past and I think it is a great tournament. It is probably one of the best two or three tournaments in the world and obviously great to work in it.

I love coming here. It gave me my first break as a coach when I was still playing. Dean Jones asked me to come and join him at Islamabad United. It is just a good tournament for me to be involved in.

What makes the HBL PSL one of the top leagues in the world?

It is the quality of the cricket. There are high scores and most nights the wickets are really good, but I think it's the bowling quality of all teams. Every team has outstanding bowling and that is why a lot of teams go to the draft to pick international batters.

It is a good match-up as it is top international batters versus top local bowlers and not to throw at the local batters, you know, there are obviously some world-class players in there.

Every night is high quality cricket … it is a great tournament, high quality, and many international players that I have spoken to want to be involved in it.

This is a good tournament for international batters to come and enhance their batting skills against fast bowling.

Yeah, I would agree.

I think Alex Hales would say the same thing. Paul Stirling is another one. Usman Khawaja was with us at Islamabad for a tournament and he agreed. He obviously is a very good player of pace bowling growing up in Australia.

All of these guys have said you've got to be playing well every night because every night a different pace bowler comes at you and every team's got a quality pace attack.

Every team probably has one or two spinners that sort of complement those quicks. A lot has been said about the bowling, but the wickets are good and you have to bowl well otherwise you do go for plenty of runs.

What are the areas Karachi Kings need to work on and what are your expectations from the team?

For starters, we need to get back to the playoffs and give ourselves a chance to play those final games, because the last two years, Karachi has not even been close to that. The last time I was with Karachi, in the HBL PSL 5, we actually won that tournament. I was there with Dean Jones and he was the head coach.

We need to establish ourselves as one of the better teams in the tournament. That obviously is going to take some work from being last probably the last couple of years, only having won one game, during the HBL PSL 7.

That is a long way to go to turn that around. So that is certainly the aim is for us to be a contending team.

Obviously, teams have gone past us in the last two years and we have some serious work to do, but we also have a good squad. We have a really experienced squad. We have probably gone for the most experience in this game that I've seen, and we've got to bank on that. We have to hope that those guys perform for us on the big stage and can get this team back to winning ways.

From the last year, which is obviously the freshest one in memory, they won one game and that was the ninth game.

So, we've got to try and start well in Karachi. That is obviously a bit of an advantage, I would say, to play at home. First up, you want to start well at home. I suppose the crowds will be full again as the Covid pandemic is over. We have to make the most of starting at home, starting well and get some early momentum. That is what you want to do in a tournament like this. You need to get momentum early.

I hope that with the international players we've picked, plus having retained eight local players, we have got a strong enough squad to start well, then keep that momentum and get us into the playoffs. And that will put us two or three games away from winning a tournament.

It sounds simple saying it like that, but this team has some work to do. We have been poor the last two years and we have to pull things together and turn it around.

We have to do it now.

You mentioned about the presence of experienced cricketers, like Shoaib Malik, but Babar Azam is not going to be around this time. How much is that going to impact as he is one of the best cricketers in the world right now?

Yeah, he's one of the best cricketers in the world. I think Sharjeel [Khan] is still obviously at the top, which he has done very well over the last few years.

We have filled Babar’s spot with James Vince, who has played really well for Multan. But, that is [Babar Azam moving to Peshawar Zalmi] obviously a big loss. He is a big player, he is a big character in the tournament and he draws big crowds into the stadium. We have tried to replace him with James Vince. Hopefully, we can substitute that – Vince has done really well when he's played in the HBL PSL.

I think our biggest player and the player we probably need to get the most out of is [Haider] Ali. When he was with [Peshawar] Zalmi in the first couple of years, he was excellent. I thought this guy could be one of the best T20 players in the world.

So hopefully, we can get the best out of Haider Ali and if he has a really good tournament, we'll be good as a team. He is dangerous as a player and can take the game away from the opposition. The management is looking to get the best out of him.

Then Shoaib [Malik] can follow that. Qasim Akram is a great emerging player. We also have Matthew Wade and a bunch of international all-rounders in James Fuller, Ben Cutting, and Andrew Tye.

Hopefully, we can fire at the top with the bat. In a tournament like this, your top six have to fire, get the runs, and get it quick enough or you are always going to struggle.

Obviously, last year there was something missing. I think we have covered it a way it's a lot to replace an excellent player. But we have done pretty well to cover that.

All of them keep emphasising “playing for the team”

This has been drilled in the KK players. Babar has left a terrible mark on the side last year

Don't have high hopes for Karachi this time round.

Another side that is being underestimated for this season. Maybe because people are still sour after the removal of Babar Azam?

Kings actually have a much, much stronger team this year. They have all the ingredients to sneak into the top 4 but they need to find the right combination

1. PSL is essentially a T20 franchise league, albeit a good one but you must understand that they have 3 proven T20 franchise bowlers in the world (Amir, Imad, Imran Tahir). They also have one of the T20 legends at number 4 (Shoaib Malik). That’s 4 certified T20 players out of the XI so it’s a very strong core.

Unlike last year, they only had 2 in Babar and Nabi.

2. Karachi have also got two of the best emerging talents in Pakistan with Tayyab Tahir and Qasim Akram. Both players are strong performers in the domestic circuit and you always need such local talent to strengthen your side.

3. KK have a huge insurance policy with Mathew Wade at the back end. Imad talked a lot about psychology and winning mentality. Wade brings this mentality into the squad and he is absolute clutch at the back end of an innings. We all know this

Personally I would hope that KK are keeping a close eye on the Australia/India series and can snap up a player like Smith or Warner if they suddenly become available at the end of the Test series. They still need one more T20 international stalwart for the best chance to win the tournament

I feel bad for Aamer Yamin because the pitches in Pakistan do not suit his bowling

The guy is a very handy bowler if the ball is swinging, and the pitch offers pace and bounce. He can also add a good 20-30 runs at the back end with some clean hitting as well

I would dare to play him at number 8 just to lengthen the batting a bit, and to add the extra bowling option. Although, he does come with the risk of getting tonked for a 25 runs plus over

Feels like a shaadi!

President of Karachi Kings Wasim Akram has arrived

The Karachi Kings have released their official anthem for the HBL PSL 8, which features vocals from Asim Azhar and Ali Azmat, with Raamis Ali also making a special appearance. The music composition and lyrics have been done by Asim Azhar, Hassan Ali, and Raamis Ali.

The anthem titled 'Yeh Hai Karachi' is a presentation of ARY Films & TV Productions.

Sulaman Naseer handled the music production, mixing, and mastering, while Dilawar Hussain played the guitar. The video was directed by Zeeshan Zabih and produced by Syed Hamid Hussain, with Salaar Yousufzai as the Director of Photography and Shehzad Hassan Khan as the Executive Producer.

Fast bowler Mir Hamza has been ruled out of HBL PSL8 due to a fractured finger.

Karachi Kings have replaced Mir Hamza with Akif Javed for the remainder HBL Pakistan Super League 8. Mir Hamza injured his finger during his side's opening match against Peshawar Zalmi on Tuesday at the National Bank Cricket Arena.

The replacement has been approved by the event technical committee that comprise Haroon Rashid (Chair), Usman Wahla (member), Dr Najeeb Soomro (Member, Medical) and Sameer Khosa (Member, Legal)

James Vince last match today.

He's off to Bangladesh for national duty.

Two problems they have is:

Vince is gone now
No more matches at their home venue now

Adam Rossington is Vince's replacement.

Their pacers have been awful:

Karachi Kings pacers economy-rate at PSL8:

Mir Hamza 6.50
Mohammad Amir 8.07
Aamer Yamin 9.32
Akif Javed 10.16
Ben Cutting 10.25
Andrew Tye 10.66
James Fuller 10.71
Mohammad Umar 11.00
Muhammad Musa Khan 11.50

Wasim Akram needs to resign and hand over the post to someone who has knowledge about local talent as well foreigners.

You ask Wasim a question about a bowler, he'll say 140 pe bowl karata
You ask Wasim a question about a batter, he'll say something like front foot pe khelta.

They hired the (probs the most well known/most active stats guy in Pak cricket) and they ended up selecting Musa Khan, Andrew Tye, James Fuller, Ben Cutting, Haider Ali (Platinum)

Don't know if Botha was active in selecting any player or had any input for the team.

I believe Wasim looks after the bowling side of things. Surely he has be held accountable for this.

Weak pace-bowling attack, together with the worst overseas picks in PSL8 - a recipe for disaster.

It is shocking that.

Probably Wasim Akram calling the shots.

They selected Haider Ali, Malik and 45-YO Imran Tahir in Platinum category! It was shambles the top three picks, who all were abysmal throughout PSL.

Tbf to them, they inherited Haider as a platinum pick (PCB set the categories before the draft). Also, Malik didn’t arrive as platinum. Their three platinum picks were Wade, Haider and Tahir.

But I do agree on the wider point, there seems to little strategy in how they’ve assembled their squad.

They really do need an overhaul for next season.
