PCB confirms team management for ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023

The Pakistan Cricket Board has confirmed the team management for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 that will be played in India in October and November. Pakistan begin their campaign on 6 October when they play the Netherlands in Hyderabad.

Player support personnel: Rehan-ul-Haq (team manager), Mickey Arthur (Director – Pakistan men’s team), Grant Bradburn (head coach), Andrew Puttick (batting coach), Morne Morkel (bowling coach), Aftab Khan (fielding coach), Abdul Rehman (assistant coach), Dr Sohail Saleem (team doctor), Drikus Saaiman (strength and conditioning coach), Cliffe Deacon (physiotherapist), Ahsan Iftikhar Nagi (media and digital content manager), Usman Anwari (security manager), Maqbool Ahmad Babri (psychologist), Talha Ejaz (analyst) and Malang Ali (masseur).

Pakistan are scheduled to depart for Hyderabad in the wee hours of Wednesday. Babar Azam’s side will play their first warm-up on 29 September against New Zealand and the second and last against Australia on 3 October.

Team director Mickey Arthur will join the side by 30 September.

I just don't understand the inclusion of Abdullah and Saud. Maybe the management is going for players with a solid technique, which I suppose makes sense. But IMO they lack the firepower that is required in ODIs. Both batsmen are grinders. I don't think they can play a quick fire 75(50) against a full-strength team
Abdullah Shafique has the ability but he needs to come out of his shell.

I would back Saim Ayub to get there after a consistent run. He isn't just a slogger – he visibly has a proper technique that he relies on. Haris probably has a slightly lower ceiling but he also has a solid technique and can do much more than Abdullah and Saud.

Have Abdullah or Saud ever even played the type of innings in domestic LOIs that Saim Ayub has played in the CPL or Haris in the PSL for that matter?
Abdullah Shafique has multiple good Innings in psl.

Average squad.

Straight out of the 90s.

From this squad, a good XI would be:

Fakhar Zaman
Imam Ul Haq
Babar Azam (C)
Saud Shakeel
Mohammad Rizwan (WK)
Iftikhar Ahmed
Shadab Khan
Hasan Ali/Mohammad Nawaz (depending on the pitch)
Shaheen Afridi
Haris Rauf
Usama Mir

This is still rubbish and the batting is going to get found out by better teams.
The reality is that the players left out would have made little difference. The spin depth is just weak, batting is average and no batsman outside would have changed that, HA is very lucky but outside him, the bowlers are as expected. I would l have liked to have seen both Ihsanullah and Arshad Iqbal( although Arshad isn't fit- too much puppy fat for a fast bowler)

I agree.

It's unfortunate how they've developed the squad. The entire strategy is subpar. Preparing for a WC in India without building the spin resources over four years is just bad management.

Their hope now is to hope for an in-form Fakhar, Babar, and/or Shaheen to break games wide open.

How are they suppose to build spin resources when there's no good spinner in domestic? Pakistan is literally desperate for any good spinner to arrive and they are so desperate that even Abrar after one FC season came into the squad and was immediately their go to spinner. They tried Qadir/Zahid/Imad and they're all bad in ODI's. Usama Mir was their most consistent performer in domestic and he is still in the squad.

Sadly, this is sad state of affairs for Pakistan who clearly lack quality spinners in domestic and due to lack of quality spinners in domestic, their upcoming batsmen don't know how to tackle good spinners as a result.

In a squad of 15 there are 6 liabilities, in shape of Fakhar, Agha, Shadab, Nawaz, Hasan Ali & Wasim Jr.

That means we can't field more than 9 competitive players at the moment in a World Cup tournament.

This is how rubbish our squad is.

They wanted a ready-made talent.

Whether it was Abrar's mystery bowling or Usama Mir's good domestic run. They never groomed anyone by giving them a consistent run in ODIs. Spinners take a long time to develop even if they're superstar prospects. No one got that type of backing from the selectors.

For large parts, they would just run the all-rounders.

Usama Mir has been part of the squad for a while and has been getting a decent run. Unfortunately Pakistan simply don't play enough ODI's to see him be part of it more but lets also keep in mind, these guys haven't been missing out on the team for years or anything. Abrar was healthy after a long time and dominated the domestic season and immediately got the call. Usama Mir was dominating in the domestic too for the past couple of seasons and got the call-up too.

It's clear they want stand-out spinners to be given the chance as soon as possible but there's been so little of them is the problem. Since Shadab debuted in 2016 and until 2021 or so before Usama Mir became an actual prospect, who was noticeable in domestic that needed to be groomed or given a run? It was Nawaz and that is why he took over for Imad post 2019. I think Nawaz is a fine bowler but he's not outstanding and that just goes to show you the quality of the spinners available in domestic.

Pakistan have even tried Shadab & Usama together because they don't care about having another spin all-rounder but so far, it has not worked. It's pretty annoying that Pakistan is the only team in the sub-continent that struggle to produce mystery spinners. Hopefully with Abrar emergence, its the start of bucking that trend but it remains to be seen.

Too much focus on lack of talent and selection in general.
Unfair to say Abrar and Usama “got a decent run”.
Abrar got a decent run in test cricket and he has taken his chances. But he was not fast-tracked into the ODI side vs Afghanistan when opportunities presented themselves.
Similarly, Usama Mir looked good vs NZ and helped win a couple of key games when Chapman was getting ready to run away with the game. However Usama was dropped after a couple of modest outings vs Afghanistan.
The truth is that options were neither identified early enough nor given opportunities to develop.

Pakistan cricket team has departed for India to participate in the World Cup.

The travel contingent consists 18 players and 13 player support personnel.

Morne Morkel will join the team in Dubai. Mickey Arthur will join the team in India.

Pakistan are scheduled to land in Hyderabad, later this evening.

52 of 69 balls against a weak Sri Lankan attack such an amazing innings by Abdullah all the top teams will need to make special plans to counter Abdullah Shafiques 75 strike rate with Imam Ul Haq raining boundaries at the other end at a 80 strike rate.

:moyo
I wouldn't call a side which dismantled india in the previous game weak. Wallenge is a quality spinner.

Also Abdullah came in under pressure to perform, its not fair to give a guy a game coming in a virtual semi final.

So many delusional posters who are convincing themselves this is a good squad. Haris and Abrar as travelling reserves?

I mean have some guts.

I hope this is the end of this “friends” era

Bro shadab rested rashid khan in a framchise game due to fear of rashid outshining him and many wanted rashid to captain lol.

You know abrar was never gonna be in the main squad as long as shadab go to be in the press conference for selecting the 15. Shadab is a full ego player lol, he reminds of chatur from 3 idiots, always trying to bring other people down rather then rasing themselves up. This whole team is composed of chaturs with the exception of saud, haris, Abrar, abduallah and a few others.

As for hasan, Tbf hasan isn't a part of the friends 11. They just called him because our selectors are brainless. I'm pretty sure ihsanullah would have been called up if he wasn't injured though.

Players that I genuinely hate that play currently.

1) Shadab Khan: Don't understand the hype he has. He isn't an allrounder lol, can barely bat against decent bowlers and he's probs the worst spinner I've seen. Horrible horrible player smh.

2) Nawaz: Again don't get him either, he's a nothing player, Defensive bowler and a weak batsmen overall.

3) Faheem: Thank god he's dropped. Don't get his inclusion either.

4) Shan masood: Weird that some posters want him back, he's a talentless player and clearly only selected because of daddy privilege. Multiple tests with a hilarious Average lol.

5) Agha Salman: Dude can't even perform against Nepal, also yes, the 2nd string bowling attack that we faced in the nz series is ironically worse then Nepal bowling, I am not kidding, Lamichane is superior to ish sodhi as a spinner who imo is the worst spinner in world cricket barring shadab who takes the cake. Agha's bowling is also weak.

I don't hate the rest though. The rest are fine, the issue is having 4 accumulators at the top and having a next to nothing middle and spin department, Chacha is literally carrying the middle order on his back.

Practice session started in full swings. Pakistan is gearing up for the World cup before their 1st practice game tomorrow against Black Caps.

The Pakistan cricket team has reached Hyderabad, thanks to the timely clearance of their visas. Upon landing in Hyderabad, Babar Azam and his men received a rapturous welcome, with fans turning up in numbers to welcome the men from across the border. Several Pakistan players took to social media to express their delight at the grand welcome they received. Diet is an extremely important part of an athlete's meal, and Pakistan players are truly feasting on some exquisite cuisines in Hyderabad.

Since landing in Hyderabad, Pakistan players have already hit the training ground once, ahead of their warm-up game against New Zealand on Friday. While the players certainly enjoyed their first training session in India, the food they were served would've satisfied them too.

With beef not available to all the 10 participating teams in India, Pakistan will rely on chicken, mutton and fish for their daily protein intake. The team's diet chart, which is in PTI's possession, includes grilled lamb chops, mutton curry, the hugely popular butter chicken and grilled fish.

As per the PTI report, for their carbohydrate intake, the Pakistan team has asked the stadium caterer for steamed basmati rice, spaghetti in Bolognese sauce, a favourite of the great Shane Warne, and vegetarian pulao. As Pakistan are here for almost two weeks, the cheat meals could include the famous Hyderabadi biryani.

If the first 12 hours are an indication, irrespective of what happens on the field, it will be a memorable first trip to India for Babar and his team.

As far as the schedule goes, the Pakistan team has a couple of warm-up matches scheduled before the ODI World Cup begins. After taking on New Zealand in Hyderabad on Friday, Babar's men are set to take on Australia in their second practice game on Tuesday.

Another big stage and another mismanagement. It's so irking to see collapse of cricket in Pakistan.

If Usama Mir plays tomorrow, who would you replace him with? Shadab or Nawaz?

Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh World Cup Match 'Uncertain' Amid Severe Air Pollution In Delhi

he notorious air pollution in the national capital has shrouded the World Cup clash between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in doubt and it remains to be seen if the health of the players takes precedence over the contest, here on Monday. A thick layer of toxic haze has enveloped the national capital once again, forcing the two teams to cancel their training at least once as Air Quality Index (AQI) remains in the severe category.

While Sri Lanka decided to stay indoors on Saturday, Bangladesh braved hazardous conditions to train last evening, wearing masks at the Feroz Shah Kotla. The 'Tigers' had cancelled their opening training session on Friday due to poor quality air.

The AQI is above 400-mark on a scale of 500 since Thursday and according to the Air Quality Early Warning System, it is likely to remain 'severe' till Tuesday.

On Sunday morning, the AQI stood at 457 according to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has made it clear that a call on future of the match will be taken only on game day when the match officials assess the air quality on Monday.

Article 2.8 of ICC's playing conditions, says "If at any time the umpires together agree that the conditions of ground, weather or light, or any other circumstances are dangerous or unreasonable, they shall immediately suspend play, or not allow play to start or to recommence." "The decision as to whether conditions are so bad as to warrant such action is one for the umpires alone to make, following consultation with the ICC Match Referee."

Both the teams are no strangers to such a situation with the Sri Lankan players resorting to masks during a Test series back in 2017 and Bangladesh cricketers doing the same in a T20 in 2019.

A number of Sri Lankan players had faced respiratory issues back then, while some even vomited in the dressing room due to the hazardous conditions.

Bangladesh are already out of reckoning, while Sri Lanka's semifinal hopes are hanging by a thread, depending more on mathematics and luck than performance.

Ranked ninth out of 10 teams, Bangladesh are playing for pride, while Sri Lanka are little better placed at seventh in the standings and will look to hold on to the position to qualify for the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan.

Sri Lanka have an overwhelming 42-9 record against Bangladesh in 53 ODIs but the Tigers had defeated the Islanders in the warm-up game ahead of the World Cup and will take inspiration from that win.

Sri Lanka are coming into the match after facing a nightmare against Indian pacers, who bundled them out for 55 during a 302-run thrashing and Kusal Mendis and his men will have to pick themselves up quickly against an equally hurt Tigers.

While injuries have been an issue, Lankan players have also faltered against high-quality opponents and Bangladesh will have to produce a superlative performance to exploit their weakness.

Sadeera Samarawickrama has been the find of the tournament for the Lankans, who have been served well by Pathum Nissanka and skipper Kusal Mendis in their batting from time to time though they lacked consistency.

In bowling too, Lankan pacers have blown hot and cold, while lack of key spinners have hurt the team.

For Bangladesh, it has been a forgettable outing as they have managed just one win against Afghanistan in the tournament.

A chaotic build-up and lack of form of their players have seen them succumbing to their sixth successive loss and become the first team to be eliminated from the World Cup following a defeat to Pakistan in their last game.

Their batters have not been able to build partnerships, while the bowlers too have failed to stop the run flow or take wickets, leaving even skipper Shakib Al Hasan bereft of any answers.

Squads:

Bangladesh: Shakib Al Hasan (c), Litton Das (wk), Tanzid Hasan Tamim, Najmul Hossain Shanto (vc), Tawhid Hridoy, Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Mahmudullah Riyad, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Nasum Ahmed, Mahedi Hasan, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Hasan Mahmud, Shoriful Islam, Tanzim Hasan Sakib

Sri Lanka: Kusal Mendis (c&wk), Kusal Perera, Pathum Nissanka, Lahiru Kumara, Dimuth Karunaratne, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Maheesh Theekshana, Dunith Wellalage, Kasun Rajitha, Angelo Mathews, Dilshan Madushanka, Dushan Hemantha, Chamika Karunaratne.

Match starts 2:00PM IST.

Pakistan speedster Haris Rauf underwent a diagnostic test in Kolkata after he felt discomfort in ribs ahead of must-win World Cup match against England.

The right-arm pacer first developed pain during a match against New Zealand in Bengaluru last week and he had to leave the field due to it.

After reaching Kolkata ahead of the England clash, the player was taken to a local hospital for MRI scan.

Meanwhile, an official told media that the scan result had returned clear and hoped that Rauf would be fully recovered before the match.

I think it was the first time that our 3 batters have scored centuries in a single world cup edition in this ICC ODI World Cup 2023. It is a good sign for our batting department
