They have fantastic power hitters in Saif Badar and Khushdil as well. Shan is a great captain. They are the dark horse of this tournament similar to Multan Sultans in this year’s PSL. In fact, 11 members of their squad are current or former Multan players.

The selection of Bhatti is understandable. He’s still quick-ish and can slog a few. However, Ilyas is literally 5’7 and bowls 135 kph. I don’t know where he gets the backing to get selected in comps like the 100.

Ilyas has got the nag of picking wickets I have observed. I remember him taking the wickets of Livingstone and Malik in the same over vs PZ in PSL 2020 and had following numbers in PSL 1/17, 2/23, 1/19, 0/37, 0/11. Didnt do anything extraordinary but stood up for his team MS (Table leader) whenever it was required. He is short but gets the ball to skid and seam.

I dont mind him getting selected, I am more surprised at Abbas' selection in the T20 squad of SP. Yes he is a very good bowler in tests and has the seniority thing going for him but, not sure about him playing T20 over Dilbar Hussain or even Mohammad Imran (23 year old pacer) who was outstanding for SP second XI T20 last year.

Balochistan call-up Quetta-born Abdul Wahid Bangalzai for First XI National T20 Cup

Lahore, 7 October 2020:

The three struggling sides in the First XI National T20 Cup – Balochistan, Central Punjab and Southern Punjab – have revisited their team combinations for the second round action, which begins at the Pindi Cricket Stadium from Friday, 9 October.

While table-toppers Northern, second-placed Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and fourth-placed Sindh have decided to move to Rawalpindi with unchanged sides, the remaining three sides have opted to include high-performing players from the Second XI National T20 Cup as they hope these changes will also result in changes to their fortunes.

Balochistan have added Quetta-born 17-year-old Abdul Wahid Bangalzai following his consistent run with the bat in the Second XI tournament. Abdul Wahid, who also represented Pakistan in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2020, has replaced Imran Farhat.

Abdul Wahid Bangalzai scored 18, 73, 19, 90 and 35 in his five matches for Balochistan. In contrast, Imran Farhat managed only 19 runs in his two outings in Multan.

Southern Punjab, yet to win a match in the First XI tournament, have decided to replace Bilawal Bhatti, Mohammad Irfan and Rahat Ali with Dilbar Hussain, Mohammad Imran and Zain Abbas.

Dilbar has taken five wickets at an economy-rate of just over seven. Imran has bagged six wickets at an economy-rate of 7, while Zain Abbas is their leading run-scorer with 193 runs.

Bilawal has been wicketless in Multan, while Irfan and Rahat’s three wickets apiece came at economy-rates of over 8.8 and 10, respectively.

Central Punjab, who are placed fifth on the points table of the six-team tournament, have brought in top-order batsman Mohammad Akhlaq in place of off-spinner Bilal Asif, who has taken one wicket in two matches at an economy-rate of just under 11. Akhlaq, on the contrary, has scored 176 runs in his side’s four Second XI National T20 Cup matches with three half-centuries.

Yes Irfan too, he was also pretty poor but other two shouldnt have even started in the main squad.

Zia Ul Haq has been bowling pretty well too for 2nd XI as per stats. 2nd highest wicket taker currently with 7 wickets in 4 matches @13 and economy of 6.13 but, they went with batsman Zain Abbas who is the 2nd highest scorer currently in 2nd Xi tournament. While Moh Abbas wasnt given a game, he shouldn’t have been in the T20 squad I think and Zia Ul Haq could have brought in atleast now. As now SP has no left arm angle which is not a necessity but provides variety.

Omair bin Yousuf could have been tried too, to be honest.

Sindh has a very strong team on paper actually, they just don’t know how to execute it.

Khurram Manzoor is the Bradman of domestic cricket and Sharjeel is a destructive opening partner.

After this, Sindh completely loses the plot. They have no idea how to utilize Saud Shakil, Hasan Mohsin, and Azam Khan, and are stuck trying to give too many opportunities to Asad Shafiq and Sarfaraz Ahmed.

My lineup for Sindh will actually be this:

Khurram Manzoor is the Bradman of domestic cricket and Sharjeel is a destructive opening partner.

After this, Sindh completely loses the plot. They have no idea how to utilize Saud Shakil, Hasan Mohsin, and Azam Khan, and are stuck trying to give too many opportunities to Asad Shafiq and Sarfaraz Ahmed.

Defending champions Northern will be the team to beat when the second-leg of the National T20 Cup for First XI teams begins at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Friday. Northern won each of their first five matches of the Multan leg and are currently on an 11-match unbeaten streak in the T20 format. They have won 10 consecutive National T20 Cup matches while they also beat the MCC team in Lahore earlier in the year in a one-off encounter.

Eight 200 or 200 plus totals were posted in the Multan-leg on some excellent T20 pitches that provided batsmen the opportunity to play their shots and assistance to bowlers as the fans were treated with some riveting contests.

A total of 481 fours and 180 sixes were hit in Multan and the competition is only expected to go stiffer as the teams vie for the four semi-final berths in the second leg of the tournament. Besides Northern, second-placed Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (eight points from four matches) and Balochistan (six points from five games) are well-placed in the hunt for the semi-finals spot.

The second round action kicks off with Northern taking on fifth-placed Central Punjab, who will be led by Pakistan men’s limited overs captain Babar Azam. Sindh play Southern Punjab under floodlights in the second match of the day.

Abdullah Shafiq and Shaheen Shah Afridi top batting and bowling charts:

Central Punjab had a tough run in Multan, with just one win in five matches, yet seem to have introduced a potential star in top-order batsman Abdullah Shafiq. The 20-year-old right hander is at the top of the run scorer’s list with a tally of 236 runs which includes the tournament’s only century to date.

Abdullah entered his name in the record books by becoming only the second player ever to score a century both on first-class and T20 debut when he scored an unbeaten 102 against Southern Punjab on the opening day of the tournament to secure what proved to be his side’s only victory in the Multan-leg.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Mohammad Hafeez has carried on from where he left in England (man-of-the-series in T20I series) and is currently occupying the second spot with 207 runs.

Balochistan opener Imam-ul-Haq is third with a tally of 195 runs while Northern’s young opener Zeeshan Malik is fourth (192 runs) followed by Balochistan captain Haris Sohail who has 181 runs.

Besides Abdullah’s century, three batsmen Imam (94), Sharjeel Khan (90) and Haider Ali (90) came with-in touching distance of scoring a century at the Multan Cricket Stadium.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Shaheen Shah Afridi has continued his rich vein of bowling form following his record-setting six wicket spell for Hampshire in the England T20 championship. The left-armer has already collected two five-wicket hauls and currently occupies the top-spot in the highest wicket-takers list of the National T20 Cup.

Shaheen has taken 12 wickets in four appearances including match winning five wicket hauls against Balochistan and Sindh (the only two five wicket hauls of the Multan-leg).

Three Northern bowlers, Haris Rauf, Shadab Khan and Musa Khan follow Shaheen in the wicket-takers list exemplifying the strength of the defending champions’ bowling line-up.

Haris has taken 10 wickets in four games, Shadab, who captained Northern in Multan, has eight wickets while Musa has collected seven wickets in four matches.

Northern’s bowling stocks will be further strengthened by the return of their captain and all-rounder Imad Wasim. Richly experienced pace duo of Mohammad Amir and Sohail Tanvir would also remain available to Imad besides the impressive trio of Haris, Musa and Shadab.

Sindh, Central Punjab and Southern Punjab aim to bounce back in the Rawalpindi-leg:

While Northern, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan seem geared towards semi-final berths, Central Punjab, Sindh and Southern Punjab have all to play for in Rawalpindi.

Sindh and Central Punjab have two points each from four and five matches respectively, Southern Punjab are yet to open their account after suffering four defeats in as many matches.

The three coaches are determined to change the fortunes of their sides in Rawalpindi and are ready to rejig their playing combinations.

Central Punjab Head Coach Shahid Anwar: "We did not do well in Multan as we should have won at least two out of our five games. All is not lost yet, however. With Babar Azam's return as the best batsman in the side and his captaincy skills, I am confident of a turnaround in Rawalpindi.

“We have some exciting youngsters and they have shown flashes of brilliance already. We need to be patient with them as the tournament is also about developing players besides the quest for the winner's trophy.

“In the remainder of the tournament we will play positive and aggressive cricket with an aim of a semi-final spot. The team is refreshed and looking forward to the remainder of the tournament after a two-day rest.”

Sindh Head Coach Basit Ali: “We have a quality team but unfortunately we could not quite deliver according to the expectations. There have been some bright spots; Sharjeel and Khurram have done well at the top of the innings while Azam Khan played brilliantly against Northern. Anwar Ali and Sohail Khan are making all-round contributions.

“Our fielding and running between the wickets must improve in Rawalpindi and I am confident that the players will learn from their mistakes and prove their worth in the crucial stage of the tournament.

“Captain Sarfaraz Ahmed is a proven performer and he is really committed and willing to turn things around in Rawalpindi. I am confident Sindh will be back at its best in the second-half of the tournament.

“The pitches in Multan produced big runs and we expect the same in Rawalpindi which should help us as we have a very explosive top-order that has the capability of both setting-up and chasing down big totals.”

Southern Punjab Head Coach Abdul Rehman: “We have had a tough start to the tournament but I strongly feel we should have won at least two out of the four games. I am happy with how our batsmen especially Sohaib Maqsood has batted while Shan Masood and Zeeshan Ashraf have also done fairly well. Umar Siddiq and Hussain Talat have also made contributions which has helped us get around the 200-run mark in almost every game.

“Our biggest concern at the moment is our bowling attack and we are determined to fix the matter. We have rested well and are refreshed for the business end of the tournament. Our aim would be to win each of our remaining six games and make it to the semi-finals.

“We have included Dilbar Hussain, Zain Abbas and Mohammad Imran from Southern Punjab's Second XI while Mohammad Irfan, Bilawal Bhatti and Rahat Ali have been released.

“I firmly believe we have a squad capable of bouncing back strongly in the event and I would be providing them my full backing - especially the youngsters - who are joining the squad in Rawalpindi.”

Covid-19 protocols - PCB takes a pragmatic approach

Pakistan Cricket Board has allowed the players and support staff to be joined by their families in the team hotel for the second round of the National T20 Cup, which gets under way in Rawalpindi on Friday, 9 October.

However, before reuniting and as part of the PCB Covid-19 protocols, the families will have to undergo two mandatory tests. Once they become part of the bio-secure bubble at the hotel and the venue, they will remain part of it until they decide to exit.

Meanwhile, all the players, player support personnel, match officials, as well as the families that have reached the hotel already, underwent Covid-19 tests today in Rawalpindi.

PCB Director – High Performance, Nadeem Khan: “Staying in a bio-secure bubble for a long duration is not easy and can potentially have its own effects, which, in turn, can reflect on the players’ performances.

“In this case, the players’ request was legitimate and the PCB, being a player-friendly organisation, accepted their request on the condition that their families will strictly maintain and follow Covid-19 protocols for the health and safety of all competitors.

“In the meantime, our Medical and Sports Sciences department will continue to keep a close eye on the Covid-19 situation in Pakistan and if they feel and believe the event protocols can be relaxed further moving forward without comprising on the health and integrity of the tournament, they will make a call.

“We all need to understand this season is being played in unprecedented situations and it’s a fact that we cannot confine and restrict the players, player support personnel and match officials to their hotels or venues throughout the season. Having said that, the PCB will continue to take a pragmatic approach wherever it can to ensure the players continue to produce their best performances without affecting their wellbeing in these difficult times.”

The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Ghaffar Kazmi and Rashid Riaz, third umpire Asif Yaqoob and fourth umpire Saqib Khan.

Sindh captain Sarfaraz Ahmed pleaded guilty and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Nadeem Arshad.

Balochistan have made two changes in their squad for the ongoing National T20 Cup f0r First XIs.

Nineteen-year-old Akhtar Shah has been rewarded for an impressive run in the Second XI National T20 Cup as he replaces out-of-form Umaid Asif, who has taken one wicket from five matches.

Akhtar, a right-arm pacer, took seven wickets in three matches at an average of 12.14 and finished as the fifth highest wicket-taker in the competition.

Meanwhile, Akif Javed, who sustained a knee injury during his side’s match against Sindh on 11 October, has been replaced by Taj Wali, who took six wickets in five matches at 21.83 of the Second XI National T20 Cup.

PCB confirms player approach during National T20 Cup

Lahore, 15 October 2020:

The Pakistan Cricket Board today confirmed that a player reported an approach from a suspected bookmaker during the National T20 Cup, currently in progress in Rawalpindi.

Following the player’s report, the PCB Anti-Corruption Unit carried out its own investigations, before escalating the matter to the Federal Investigating Agency (FIA) for further probe.

PCB Director – Anti-Corruption and Security, Lt Col (Retd) Asif Mahmood, said: “I have spoken with the player to compliment and thank him for following the PCB Anti-Corruption Code and reporting the approach to the anti-corruption officer.

“This is a testament of our regular anti-corruption education sessions as well as the player’s clear understanding of the Code and his obligations under such a situation. This also reflects the trust and confidence the players have in the PCB Anti-Corruption Unit, which is very satisfying and encouraging for us.

“Following the report, the PCB Anti-Corruption Unit carried out its own probe and unearthed some sensitive information, which has been forwarded to the FIA, which has the required expertise, resources, capabilities and powers to investigate such matters.

“As we cannot jeopardise an ongoing investigation, it will be inappropriate for us to share any specifics of the approach. However, the PCB as a responsible member of the International Cricket Council will continue to keep the game’s administrative body abreast of the progress in investigations as part of our information-sharing approach.

“We are all aware that the game is at risk due to a small number of corrupters who try to entice cricketers for their personal gains and benefit. But there is also no doubt that we can collectively defeat these people if the players strictly abide by the anti-corruption protocols and continue to report approaches to the anti-corruption officers.”

The PCB, as part of its zero-tolerance approach for corruption in cricket, has been assisting the government on legislation to criminalise corruption in sports. In the draft paper, the PCB has proposed severe sanctions relating to corruption, illegal manipulation, betting and match and spot-fixing as well as aiding and abetting such conduct on those found guilty of engaging in such offences.

Lahore, 16 October 2020: The Pakistan Cricket Board will use Saturday’s high-profile National T20 Cup semifinals to create awareness about breast cancer as part of its corporate social responsibility in partnership with Pink Ribbon Pakistan.

October is marked across the globe as Breast Cancer Awareness Month to help increase attention and support for the awareness of breast cancer, which is by far the most common cancer in women worldwide. According to the World Health Organisation, there are about 1.38 million new cases and 458,000 deaths from breast cancer each year.

To mark the occasion, players from the four semi-finalist teams as well as PCB staff and broadcasters will wear pink ribbons on their shirts to raise awareness. In addition to this, the match officials will wear pink polos, the stumps will be painted pink and all PCB’s digital assets will turn pink to align with the global breast cancer awareness cause.

“I expect the players and officials to show responsibility as the world is watching and international cricket is standing at our doorsteps. Their irresponsible actions can put into jeopardy all the efforts of the PCB in organising and inviting sides during these challenging Covid-19 times.”

Nine players and three officials had spent time in the out of the bubble area within the vicinity of the team hotel. After this came to the attention of the event organisers following last evening’s match, Covid-19 tests were conducted on an urgent basis, which all turned negative.

The 12 individuals picked up the costs of the tests, besides receiving warnings for their actions.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Friday said as many as nine players, including a few from the national team, and three officials breached its bio-secure bubble during the ongoing National T20 Cup in Rawalpindi. Furious at the violation of its COVID-19 protocols at a hotel in Rawalpindi, the PCB said any player or official breaking the bio-bubble in future will face immediate expulsion from the tournament.

The PCB didn't name the players but according to media reports, the violators include Fakhar Zaman, Imam-ul-Haq, Khurrum Manzoor, Muhammad Hafeez, Rashid Khan, Basit Ali, Kamran Akmal, Sohail Khan, Abdul Razzaq, Anwar Ali, Yasir Shah and Usman Shinwari.

PCB's director of high performance centre, Nadeem Khan, called it "completely unacceptable".
