A good campaign for them last time out, finished tied on points with eventual winners Multan, but were knocked out by Islamabad in the Eliminator 1.

Can this squad make it further?

Usman Qadir is only picked because of Babar. Danish Aziz is a below average player. Could have picked Grandhomme for Powell.

To me this squad looks weaker than many of the previous PZ squads?

Muhammed Haris
Babar Azam
Bhanuka Rajapaksa
Sherfane Rutherford
Rovman Powell
Danish Aziz .
Wahab
Mujeeb
Arshad Iqbal
Salman Irshad
Sufyan Muqeem

Looks like a weak team. With Babar as the captain, they are likely to finish rock bottom.

Babar
Saim
Haris
Rajapaksa
Powell
Rutherford
Aamir Jamal
Wahab
Mujeeb
Arshad
Sufyan/Qadir

Looks like well balanced team. Should qualify for playoffs.

Only really interested in the development of Saim and Muhammad Harris our two future stars and openers

Couldn’t care less about the rest of this lot

Not a bad team.

1. Saim Ayub
2. Mohammad Haris (WK)
3. Babar Azam (C)
4. Tom Kohler-Cadmore (F)
5. Jimmy Neesham (F)
6. Sherfane Rutherford (F)
7. Aamer Jamal
8. Wahab Riaz
9. Usman Qadir
10. Arshad Iqbal
11. Mujeeb Ur-Rehman (F)

This was a tricky line-up to name. Not many options in spin nor many options in the middle order. But a mouthwatering opening of Ayub & Haris is a must watch.

Wont Babar open? I thought he hated coming down the order

This looks like a pretty solid team, at least batting wise. Plenty of power hitters throughout the lineup and good mix of lefties & righties. May struggle bowling wise but there's 4 pacers & 2 spinners and Mujeeb could be the big difference maker in terms of the bowling department.

I am hoping we see Saim, Haris & Jamal play a bunch to really showcase themselves. I am a bit disappointed Haseebullah has been drafted by Peshawar. With Haris there, he likely won't play much and it's disappointing a team like Karachi didn't get him.

Powell is clear as a whiteball hitter imo. Has a T20I 100 as well.

Rajapaska Asia Cup final PTSD has forced Babar to sign him up.

I think this is the best batting lineup Zalmi has ever had. Disappointing to see finished bowlers like Wahab getting retained though, he should have been booted out.

Zalmi always find a way to go deep into the tournament & they will surely be in contention again.

It was Inzimam and Akram who went and got Rajapaksa

I think it was the same two went for Ayub as well.

Babar is already worried that there is enough evidence for him to now bat at number 3

I was thinking of this team but then decided against it because I don't believe Babar will drop him self to 3

Great looking kits from Peshawar. The other franchises should take notes, especially Karachi and Lahore.

As per reports:

Peshawar Zalmi will take partial replacements for Mujeeb-ur-Rahman and Rovman Powell.

All those players picked are washed out players. This team lacks quality and is full of has beens.

Only good player is Babar Azam and his presence does make the team look abit better.

Feel bad for Babar, always ends up with a terrible team. First Karachi and now Zalmi

Peshawar Zalmi has picked left-handed batsman Haris Sohail and Right Arm Fast Bowler Khurram Shehzad in the Supplementary Category for PSL 8

Yeah it’s always his Qismat and not the fact that he is a poor T20 player/captain

Supplementary and replacements picks on Wednesday (25 January 2023):

Peshawar Zalmi – Supplementary: Khurram Shahzad and Haris Sohail. Replacement: Richard Gleeson

Khurram Shehzad is a good bowler, played well for Quetta at times. Richard Gleeson however is a solid and better pick. Specially to complement Naseem & Hasnain as well as provide experience for them.

Final squad:

Peshawar Zalmi

Babar Azam, Sherfane Rutherford, Wahab Riaz, Mohammad Haris, Aamir Jamal, Salman Irshad, Tom-Kohler Cadmore, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Rovman Powell, Mujeeb ur Rahman, Danish Aziz, Arshad Iqbal, Saim Ayub, Usman Qadir, Suifyan Muqeem, Haseeb Ullah, Jimmy Neesham, Khurram Shahzad, Haris Sohail

Richard Gleeson (partial replacement for Rovman Powell)

NOTE: Lahore Qalandars and Peshawar Zalmi have reserved their Supplementary category 4 picks.

Peshawar Zalmi

The first most intriguing team of this year’s PSL is Javed Afridi’s men in yellow who will look to lift the trophy once again, this time under the leadership of the current captain of the Pakistan Men’s T20 side (Babar Azam). The attention that has been draw to Zalmi by Babar’s transfer and further appointment to leadership is a sign of great trust the franchise has in the ability of Babar to lead them to silverware (which has not been his specialty so far as a captain in this format). Babar will get his opportunity to silence severe critics of his captaincy on Day 2 of the tournament when Zalmi open’s their campaign against Karachi Kings. Rest assured, this will be a very romantic encounter from the coldest depths of the earth on the 14th of February. The fixture might hold bad blood, but there is plenty of young blood that is ready to step up for Zalmi, and other players to look out for in this year’s edition:

Saim Ayub has been the breakaway star from the Pakistan cup. The flambouyant, dashing young left handed opener is a breath of fresh air to watch batting in the Powerplay considering Pakistan national teams lack of urgency visible in the first 6 overs. A smart pick by Zalmi who will look to open him or pair him up with Muhammad Harris who captured the imagination of the world with his clutch performances against South Africa, Bangladesh and New Zealand in the recently concluded world cup. We hope that Zalmi allows the two, young and energetic batsmen open the innings and give us a glimpse of Pakistan’s potential opening combination.

Aamer Jamal will look to further enhance his reputation as a bowling all-rounder after impressing against England in the 7 T20i series, and Arshad Khan who has all the ingredients to become a top quality fast bowler will also have to do a lot of hard work in ensuring there is a fair balance between batting and bowling quality in the Zalmi squad.

Overseas players have always been important to any franchise’s campaign as they bring experience and the edge to the side in order to get them over the line. This year, Zalmi’s big overseas acquisition comes in the form of Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Jimmy Neesham. Pakistan are well aware of Bhanuka’s ability to shift gears and anchor if necessary, whilst Neeshan is a proven lower order six hitter and a decent medium pacer. It will be interesting to see if these key players can play the entire tournament or how they fit in to Babar’s plans.

Peshawar Zalmi won the first-ever HBL Pakistan Super League match to be played on Pakistani soil. It was the final of the 2017 edition and by beating Quetta Gladiators comprehensively, they became the champions of the second edition of the tournament. Their win percentage of 54.37 is best amongst the five sides who have been in the HBL PSL since its inception in 2016.

Peshawar Zalmi will commence their journey in the eighth edition of the HBL PSL on 14 February against Karachi Kings at the National Bank Cricket Arena.

PCB Digital spoke to Daren Sammy, their head coach, about the role of Babar Azam in the Peshawar Zalmi dressing room, his own journey in the league as a player, mentor and now the head coach, and the evolution of the HBL PSL.

You will be working with Babar Azam, one of the best batsmen in the world right now. How is this experience going to be for you?

It is a pleasure to have him on board in the Zalmi camp. We always look at the bigger picture and the bigger picture is how can win another title. We've been labeled as the most consistent team in the HBL PSL. But us as a team starting over, it feels 2016 all over again where there was Shahid Afridi, there was myself, a young Wahab [Riaz], and Kamran Akmal, and we built a legacy in the league. We build up a franchise to becoming one of the number one sports brands in Pakistan.

Babar in the dressing room is a great thing to have. He is one of the best batsmen in the world.

What are the aspects you are looking to work on with Babar?

I always tell people I do not see myself as a coach. I call myself a tactician. You look at Babar and there is not much more you could add to his game from a technical aspect.

My input could be from the tactical aspect in regards to the captaincy, leadership, working with men from different places. How do you manage them? How do you get a group of men to go out and perform?

Our hallmark has been the way we have been able to play as a team and to have a superstar like him, it is about him bringing his extra skills and fitting in that environment that we have built over the last seven years and to make us even better.

It is my job and the coaching staff to bring that element and bring a nice environment in the team that will help us to win.

Talk us through your team composition. Who are the players to watch out?

We got something in store for our fans. You could see the excitement on my face. I am really pleased with what we got out of the draft. We got what we were looking for and we are quite happy with what we have.

When you look at the overseas players that we have Rajapaksa, TKC, who have been with the Zalmi since the first season, and Roman Powell, who has become so mature over the last year and his form is crazy. Then you have Jimmy Neeshan, who is in the final for Pretoria in the SA 20. You have a leg spinner out of Australia, Peter [Hatzoglou]. We have covered all the bases.

Locally, we have Mohammed Haris. I mean, look, I said it, you needed him when I was in Australia watching the World Cup, I said, you got to have him playing. The energy he brings at the top of the inning. We even have a minister in our lineup, Wahab [Riaz]. The experience he brings. Then Arshad [Iqbal], he has so much experience.

If we manage well, which I think we will do and put together an XI that will go out there and make Babar’s job easy that will help us win games and take us to the championship.

Zalmi can surprise a lot of teams in this tournament.

I do not think surprise; I think our reputation speaks for itself. I do not believe what we do is surprising. They do not call us the most consistent team for a reason. We do not do things by surprise. We have shown that we are a team to beat.

As I said, with us starting over again, the future is bright for our youngsters and Peshawar Zalmi.

You have been involved with the HBL PSL as a player, mentor and coach. How has been your journey?

It has been an amazing journey. I never forget the first time I saw this number, I think +92 is the area code, it was a young Javed Afridi sending me a message and welcoming me to Zalmi team after the auction. That started the relationship and it has been a great one.

The journey has been such that I feel like I'm at home. Zalmi will always be my home. If you cut my skin, you will see Zalmi blood coming out of it. That is how the journey has been.

I've become a household name because of Peshawar Zalmi. It is something I will always be thankful for and the icing on the cake was being able to play a part in bringing cricket back here through the HBL PSL.

I remember back in 2017, whenMarlon Samuels, [Dawid] Malan, Chris Jordan and myself won the cup and flew out, we said it was a small step in the right direction. To be part of something that's bigger than cricket in itself by fast tracking [the return of international cricket to Pakistan] with Australia, South Africa, England, Sri Lanka, the West Indies [coming here].

The fans here can now watch Babar Azam score a hundred and Shaheen Shah Afridi take five wickets, it is something special. I do not think they ever saw Misbah [ul-Haq] score a Test hundred here, but it gives me joy to know I was part of something special.

What are your thoughts on the evolution of the HBL PSL?

I think it was either Dale Steyn or AB de Villers who said this is one of the toughest leagues in the world because of the quality of the local bowlers in Pakistan. There are so many talents for Pakistan cricket.

I remember one called Hasan Ali, emerging player for us and two years later he is the number one ICC ODI bowler in the world. Then Shaheen Shah Afridi and Mohammad Haris, all these young guys who come from Pakistan that's the beauty of it to gain the experience from the internationals that come in the dressing room and impart the knowledge on to the locals.

When I sit at home and watch Hasan Ali swinging and helping Pakistan win Champions Trophy and all of the work come to fruition. It is special. That is what the league is supposed to do.

PZ have drafted Shakib Al Hasan as reserved supplementary pick. He will be available for selection in Tuesday’s match versus KK. He’s available until 26 Feb

Dasun Shanaka has joined PZ in place of an injured Sherfane Rutherford, who is injured

They should bring pick these 4 overseas players Powell,Shakib,Shanka,Neesham

Arshad Iqbal should come in for Shehzad

Peshawar Zalmi's Shakib Al Hasan has had to leave the squad to attend a family emergency in the United States and he has been replaced by Azmatullah Omarzai.

The Bangladesh all-rounder would return to the HBL Pakistan Super League for the Playoffs in case of Peshawar Zalmi's qualification.

Shakib Al Hasan: "I have to temporarily leave the HBL PSL 8 to attend an important personal matter. I know I have a strong fan-base here and I was looking forward to playing all the matches in front of all the fans.

"But no need to be disappointed as I will be back at some stage during in the second half of the competition to play my part in Peshawar Zalmi’s campaign to reclaim the title.”

A very average bowling unit.

Can't contain or take wickets.

Think-tank needs to come up with a plan.

Zalmi got way too many similar type of foreign players in there. Powell, Neesham, Rajapaksa and Shanaka are all very similar. Neesham is a value pick because he gives you something with the ball too. But they could have easily kept one out of the other three and picked up two decent bowlers instead.

Very unbalanced side.

Sammy, M Akram and Inzi.

A coaching setup that doesn't fill me with much confidence really.

This has to be one of the weakest group of bowlers ever in the PSL.

Smashed to all parts match after match.

Multan’s is worse

No one has got a proper hold of them yet

To not be able to defend 240 is a damning indictment on bowling/fielding/captaincy, regardless of a freak innings played by Roy.

Peshawar Zalmi’s Rovman Powell will depart after the Zalmi’s match against Sultans today due to international commitments.

The PSL chase record has been broken twice in 3 days, both against Zalmi.

In consecutive games they have been unable to defend 240+

Not only a poor bowling attack, but also a rather weak fielding unit.

Ordinary effort today again.

Ordinary effort today again.

Quite out of touch strategically too

What was the need of getting Shan’s wicket early? Should have let him score his 50 ball 70

Number one priority for PSL 9 has to be a couple of good pace-bowlers, because at the moment their pacers are awful.

Peshawar Zalmi Talent Hunt 2023 ends successfully in Hayatabad Sports complex, 15 best and talented cricketers selected after Trials of 10 thousand young Cricketers

The first and important stage of the Zalmi talent hunt 2023 organized by the Pakistan Super League franchise Peshawar Zalmi has ended, more than ten thousand young cricketers have registered in the four-day trials at the Hayatabad Sports Complex Peshawar. Peshawar Zalmi President Inzamam ul Haq, Director Cricket Mohammad Akram, Zalmi star Kamran Akmal were among the selection panel that tested the talent of the young cricketers participating in the open trials and selected the best players. Pakistan and Peshawar Zalmi captain Babar Azam also reached Peshawar on the third day of the trials and encouraged the young cricketers. Zalmi and Pakistan Rising Star Mohammad Haris were also present at the trials and encouraged the young cricketers.

The young cricketers were given an opportunity to show their skills by organizing matches between Inzamam u l Haq XI, Babar Azam XI, Kamran Akmal XI and Darren Sammy XI. After the end of these matches, the fiften best young cricketers have been finalized. Peshawar Zalmi Director of Cricket Muhammad Akram said that Peshawar Zalmi will provide all possible facilities to the fiften young cricketers . Young cricketers will get training and coaching at the National Cricket Academy and the most talented young cricketers can also be given an opportunity in the emerging category of PSL 9.

If Khurram Shahzad does OK here then certainly he can make his place into Pak's white ball side.
