[PICTURES/VIDEOS] Ravichandran Ashwin announces retirement from international cricket [Update@ Post# 1376]

Awesome bowling and very decent batting in the first innings. If only he could improve his running between the wickets and fielding then he will be even more greater assest for Indian team. Looking forward to many more such bowling efforts from him.

apart from the helpful pitch the fact that bhajji seems to be getting in wickets seems to have spurred him on

he always been a good bowler in LOIs and i believed he will do well in the tests coz he has many variations and not an one dimensional t20 spinner

and also i'm a big fan of his batting,he is always busy looking to score runs

Good effort but I have to admit that NZ were pretty rubbish against spin.

I love to see him face against Sri Lanka (Quality batsmen of spin) in India or in Sri Lanka and preform overseas like in Australia and England which he hasn't done it then I will judge him how good a bowler he is.

11 matches -- 17 wickets -- 26 avg -- 4.3 economy

very good figures

He's done extremely well against WI and NZ, but these are two of the worst teams when it comes to playing spin, and that too, they played in India.

Averaged 62+ in Australia.

Agreed, generally spin bowlers fail in Australia, but Ashwin definitely needs to prove himself at atleast one of the foreign locations against a good opposition. Till then the verdict will remain on hold.

Let him prove himself against Eng and Aus in India first.

Yes, Ashwin needs to prove himself outside his comfort zone to be regarded amongst the top spinners. He was pretty ordinary in Australia. but Australia is a tough place for a new spinner. Spinners mature with age, so we have to wait and see. He should do well against England in India.

Shame that with Harbhajan, it went the other way round.

See Ashwin doing really well. Don't judge him against Australia. Its real tough there.

He's going to smash England.

If i am not wrong...Even Kumble was bad once he entered early 30's..and then he picked on later..especially after his ODI retirement...after 2003 WC.

Hopefully Bhajji returns to form..and India could use to too good offspiners at the same time...against Brits..

Inform Ashwin, Ojha with 2001 Harbhajan.... would be fun to see Brits dancing around :D...especially with no Kivender petersingh !!

So 12/85 in the match, what a way to come back to form.

Average also down from 35-odd to 26. With Eng coming, its only going to get better. :D

Wow, 12 wickets for him in this test. Bowling average down to 26 from 35. :yk

If he gets 7 more in next game he'll be 3rd fastest to get to 50 wickets in tests. Likely to do it.

Honestly we have turned this guy into a legend. Averaged 34.48 before this game, now averages 26.83.

It'll dip even lower after the 4 tests vs England.

Don't care about tanking as long as he keeps getting those wickets and make us win those series. Let's destroy England as well now. :haha

Brilliant job in utilizing home conditions.

bowled really well but nz didnt half gift a few wkts to him

We badly needed a spinner after Bhaji's out of form series after series and Ashwin is doing excellent job. Plus point is, he still very young! Him and Ojha both should try to seal the gap that was created by Bhaj and Kumble's departures! And I think both are on their way!

Massive tests series are coming! India's pride is on the line! Want him to improve every test.

The fact that when Ashwin was teenager he wanted to be batsman has helped us with lower order batting as well. Honestly, Ashwin's coverdrives are Laxmanesque! :O and his running between the wicket are also like Laxman's :))

Nah! Ashwin is a good lad but thats about it, Narine is special talent !

Ashwin is doing well for now but his career will go much like Kaneria !

Even if Ashwin has a bowling career like Kaneria, whilst maintaining his 30+ batting average then most Indian fans would be very happy imo.

I watched his hundred in the stadium . By the time I reached he was already batting & for few minutes I actually thot it was laxman . Not just some of his shots , but hes also built and walks around like VVS .

:))) :)))

he drawn a test match for us on his won vs Windies instead of winning bcoz of his running :P

While I hated that, you should check the first innings of that test. Without his 100 , India would be struggling big time.

looks a very fine spinner and with his batting adds immense balance to indian line-up...

I think he will be the highest wicket taker this year with india having to play 10 tests at home aginst teams like NZ,Eng and Aus who are crap at playing spin.....

Ashwin has to play 5 more tests this year and he took only 5 wickets in first 2 matches this year. It would be difficult for him to be higher wicket taker this year.

Yeh, so many similarities!

Finishing the match quite not Laxman-like eh! But to be fair to him he hit 100 in first inning. :)

It's going to be either Philander or Broad.

He is a good bowler and unless he proves himself outside Asia he will remain to be above average

yup..we saw how deadly Ashwin was in England and Australia recently...he helped India to clean sweep victories..even James Anderson struggled to pick his carum ball..

i am sure that if Ashwin toured England, he would have caused trouble to James Anderson.. :yk

You sound like a typical sub-continental fan who discounts home performances and only want to prove your worth against the western, 'white' sides - Australia, England and South Africa perhaps. How about you ask England and Australia to tour your countries and spin them out of the contest? That not generate enough prestige for you?

And James Anderson is a tail-ender. He'll struggle to pick anything. And it's called a 'carrom' ball.

performing well in alien conditions proves a worth of a player...

ok Ashwin wont be deadly overseas but his figures in Australia was too bad...he was averaging 63 with the ball in 3 tests...

on the other hand when James Anderson toured UAE , he bowled magnificently on dead tracks...

hope u got my point..

Which is still a better average than Murali or Harbhajan or any other contemporary spinner touring Australia.

Down under is not a place where spinners go and experience much success.

Ajmal averaged 111 in the only test he played there.

and your excuse for that is.......?????

Wonderfully againist a very weak batting line up?

Have you checked Andersons Away avg?

Btw what was Ajmals avg in NZ and AUS?

111 in AUS and 58 in NZ. Did CHris Martin pick his Doosra?

So you are judging a player based on one overseas tour? Ashwin has only traveled to Australia where overseas spinners have struggled traditionally. He will have to get more chances in order to perform in alien conditions.

Gaaza619's next potential response.

@Gazza619 - Are you Bhajji In disguise or what? :P

ajmal was ordinary back then...

spinners dont do well in England either, and Ajmal picked 18 wickets in england against england/australia at an average of around 25..

n Ashwin hasnt played in England.not saying hes better than Ajmal, but hes good enough

n yes Ajmal was ordinary back then,it was only his 3rd tour.guess what it was Ashwin's first tour

I have to admit NZ were pretty awful against spin but can't discredit Ashwin for that

That's not even a discussion at the moment as Ashwin has never bowled in England (Tests). Once he does play a test match in England we can revisit that discussion.

Gosh the insecurity and pessimism of some people is just phew! The guy has played SEVEN tests and he has 43 wickets. 3 matches 9 wickets in Australia. other 34 wickets in just 4 tests in india which is a phenomenal achievement by any yardstick.

sure he has played opposition that is weak at spin but instead of congratulating him and hoping that he does well in overseas conditions in future tours, they are bagging his achievements saying its just home conditions. sure he didnt have a good australia tour but the guy is a newbie. he is young. give him a few years, he will do well. i for one think he has the right attitude. he gets smacked sometimes but doesnt give up.

judging a player fairly doesnt mean you downplay whatever wins he provides your team by nitpicking. thats just dumb, ridiculous and proves you will never ever be happy to see your team win.

Very well said.

The way he bowled against NZ i think any team would have struggled he was dead accurate, it was an amazing performance. England should be afraid very afraid...

Another 5-fer on a much flatter track.

3-fifer in 4 innings this series. MoS candidate surely irrespective of the result.

i never doubted his potential,he is a natural matchwinner with his wicket taking abilities...

Hope he maintains the consistency!

Excellent work by Ashwin. Back to back Man of the Series performance at Home. Appeared to have found his lost mojo, tough task ahead for him in the form of England series at Home. But still expect him to continue his better performance. All the best, Ashwin :)

So finally Indian think tank think he's better than Chalwa :)))

Ashwin's got a good brain and he's a very good spin bowler. Deserves to be backed.

Fastest Indian bowler to take 50 test wickets. Good stuff.

He is an attacking Bowler... :kohli

But still.. I feel we lack a bowler of the caliber of Kumble who would just whipe out the tail especially in his last 3-4 years of cricket...
He is the best we have got......

So happy to see him perform well for us once again. I hope he and Ojha continues to do the job well in the remaining game(s).

51 wickets in 9 matches..................better than any other indian bowler

is he gonna pass all other tundlers??

The best thing about Ashwin is his flight. He should retain that to be successful in tests. Brilliant delivery to ger Compton out (Not that he is a great player of spin).

We still need to see what Ashwin does against good players of spin. He's been great against minnows and has bashed them royally.

Dude's turning out to be a better test bowler than LOI bowler. Irony huh?

no irony he was proper spinner to begin with played in ranji picked wickets there came to lime light through ipl but its not like he was just t20 freak bowler with just variations
he tosses it up spins the ball with accuracy even without his variation he is handful
