[PICTURES/VIDEOS] Shakib Al Hasan announces his retirement from international cricket after the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 [Post Updated #391]

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Friday, named their star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan to lead Bangladesh in the forthcoming Asia Cup and ICC T20 World Cup 2022.

BCB president Nazmul Hassan made the announcement in a surprise media briefing at his residence in Dhaka.

“Shakib Al Hasan is the captain for the Asia Cup, New Zealand series and World Cup,” he said.

“We will speak more to him when he returns to Bangladesh [from Lanka Premier League]. We have to know his long-term plan.

“I spoke to him on the phone yesterday. But it is better if we talk to him in person since he is busy with a franchise league currently. We will also talk about which format he will keep leading, whether it is all three formats or one or two of them.

“There was never any confusion. I told you before. He is the obvious choice. Who else can lead? But we had to talk to him before appointing him. Nobody should think anything else. Shakib is the captain. He was always the main choice.”

BCB President further revealed that Bangladesh’s Asia Cup squad will be the same as their World Cup squad.

“They have just one spot open. We still don’t know about Tamim Iqbal who is recovering from a back injury. We might trial one or two openers in the Asia Cup,” he said.

Shakib is one the most succesccful spinners when it comes to the World Cup. He is just behind Imran Tahir and the great Muralitharan.

I don’t know if I’m wrong but seeing shakib finish his 10 overs by 34 overs seems messed up to me, when he is the best bowler and you know England will go big in last 8-12 overs

He’s got ok figures of 1/52 in the end

Meanwhile, his boys are likely going to end up at 1/90s

Felt like he’s protecting his figures.

As Atherton just described it in the commentary, Shakib used “captain’s privilege”

He seems to bat best at #3 and seems to perform worse and worse as he bats lower. So why doesn't he bat at 3? Has he lost his confidence in batting up the order? Does he want to let the young Shanto gain experience? Or is he trying to stats pad?

Shakib Al Hassan awarded Player of the Match vs SL for his brilliant all around performance.

He claimed 2 wickets for 57 runs with his bowling and with the bat he notched up a remarkable 82 runs from 65 deliveries.

Amongst all the chaos of today's match, his innings was superb.

Still a fantastic cricketer.

Him and Shanto won the game for BD.

Question is why couldn't SL defend 279 against a misfiring Bangladesh? SL's bowling and fielding were ordinary. They dropped Shakib when he was 7*.

Shakib Al Hasan has officially signed up for the PSL 9 Draft.

Excited to see which team will pick him

No plans of slowing down for Shakib with fresh challenges on the horizon

Bangladesh veteran Shakib Al Hasan is prepared to forgo opportunities in franchise cricket to prolong his international career in all three formats.

Shakib is currently on the sidelines nursing the finger injury he picked up last month during the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup, but the world-class all-rounder is already planning to return during Bangladesh's domestic T20 tournament next month and wants to appear at next year's ICC Men's T20 World Cup.

While tempted to play more domestic tournaments around the world, Shakib insists his priority remains to play for his country in all three formats of the game.

Shakib has featured in the last five editions of the 50-over World Cup, has scored more T20I runs than any other player from Bangladesh and remains one of the first picked in Test match cricket.

And the 36-year-old does not want to put an end date on his outstanding international career just yet, prepared to skip the opportunity to appear in domestic white-ball tournaments around the world to ensure he continues to lead from the front for his country.

"I did not give my name in IPL and so there a window will be opened and when my manager gave my name in PSL I told him to withdraw it and my name is not there in PSL so my plan is to give all this time to national team because I will sacrifice the franchise tournament that I used to play," Shakib said.

"I am playing in three formats and hope that I can continue that but no one knows about (the) future and what is in store but till now I have the desire to play cricket for a long time."

Bangladesh managed just two victories when missing out of the knockout stages of the World Cup in India, but showed a marked improved performance in their return to international cricket when they drew their recent ICC World Test Championship series on home soil against New Zealand.

They now turn their attention to a white-ball series in New Zealand later this month that consists of three ODIs and three T20Is, which Shakib was scheduled to feature in until he was advised to skip the tour and continue his rehabilitation from injury.

"I was hoping that I will be going to New Zealand for the ODI and T20I series as now the team is departing for the tour and I was planning in that way because I felt I will be ok by four weeks," Shakib added.

"But I have consulted a doctor two days back and he asked me to wait as I will need another two weeks and later start the rehabilitation.

"It is taking more time than expected as it will need six weeks and the next option is that after doing the rehabilitation and gaining fitness I don't see any other way before BPL and there is election and so I will be busy so I will return to competitive cricket through BPL and can play from the start of BPL by getting full fitness."
ICC

With Shakib's long-term availability in question due to his latest identity as a political leader, whether he will lead the side in the coming days or not remains a big question. Shakib insisted that he will clear the air soon after speaking with the board in this regard.

Shakib told reporters following his practice session at BSC on Tuesday:

"No discussion on it (national team captaincy) so far but I will talk with the board and there will be a discussion about it,"

"Later a decision will be taken in this regard by everyone that will be best for the team,"

"Expectations are high every time and it will be the same this time too since we have been playing very well for the last one year in T20 editions,"

"The team is balanced now and everyone is playing well and we played well in New Zealand and so expectations will be high. It will be played in the United States and West Indies where our cricket perhaps will be more suitable, so we will have a chance there,"

"It has been almost two and a half months out of the field. I could not do any work on fitness, couldn't do any work on skill. Naturally it will take some time to get ready and so I didn't want to waste any more time on that,"

"I've started training but it will take a few more days. As I bowl with this finger (which got injured) naturally it will take some time but the progress is good,"

I think Shakib should hang up boots now. He is an MP now. Not sure how he can handle both.

He was planning to retire after CT 2025. I think he should retire earlier.

Shakib might not be playing any more cricket now and he should not be playing cricekt. He is a member of parliament now and he need to focus on 1 of them. His attitude won't let him succeed in both.

Shakib Al Hasan diagnosed with a retinal condition

Bangladesh Cricket Board have issued an update on all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, who has been diagnosed with a retinal condition in his left eye.

Shakib complained of issues with his eye after which he consulted Ophthalmologists in Bangladesh and overseas.

Multiple eye assessments resulted in the final diagnosis which confirmed an issue with the retina of his left eye.

"Shakib has been complaining of subtle issues with his left eye. After consulting Ophthalmologists in Bangladesh and abroad and after multiple eye assessments, it was confirmed that he is suffering from Extrafoveal Central Serous Chorioretinopathy (CSR) of the left eye. It has been decided that a conservative approach will be adopted for managing the issue for now," Senior BCB Physician Dr. Debashis Chowdhury said.

“Extrafoveal Central Serous Chorioretinopathy is a condition that affects the retina, leading to visual disturbances. The medical team overseeing Shakib's case is optimistic about managing the condition effectively with a conservative approach.”

The BCB requested the cricketing fraternity and fans for privacy on the matter as Shakib focuses on his recovery.

ICC

If at this stage he announces retirement, I regard him as a true all rounder after Jacques Kallis.

Shakib has lost his top spot as the Number 1 ODI All-rounder in the world as Mohammad Nabi overtakes him in the latest ICC ODI rankings.

Shakib held the number one position in the ODI Rankings for a period of 1,739 days, starting from 7 May 2019. This is the longest anyone has ever maintained the top spot without a break. His overall tenure at the top spans a record-setting 4,276 days, which is equivalent to over 11 and a half years. Following Shakib, Kapil Dev had the longest reign with a total of 3,816 days, divided into two periods of 1,376 and 1,375 days respectively.

Shakib Al Hasan returns for Bangladesh for the Chattogram Test match and will play his first red-ball game in nearly a year

Bangladesh's interim head coach Nic Pothas is happy to have experienced all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan back in the Test squad as they prepare to recover from a heavy loss in the first match of the ICC World Test Championship series against Sri Lanka.

"I think any team that has Shakib in it is very fortunate," Pothas said.

"We welcome him back. It is always great to have him in the change room. His energy is very infectious. He has a lot of experience for the guys to learn from and whenever Shakib is back, he's a giver, and so we really enjoy having him around the group."

Shakib hasn't played international cricket for a while after being diagnosed with a retinal condition in January this year.

The head coach said that it appeared like Shakib has lost weight and was pleased with his form in the recently concluded Bangladesh Premier League.

"He's the professional that he is. He knows what he's done and what he hasn't done. He will adapt to the conditions. That's why he's world class," Pothas said.

"When Shakib comes into the group, it creates calmness. You know, it also supplies Shanto with an extra person he can get advice from. A very, very experienced person on the field he just brings calm."

ICC

While speaking to the media in Dhaka, Shakib Al Hasan feels that Bangladesh could have prepared their international and domestic schedules differently to better prepare for the T20 World Cup 2024:

"It will be wrong if we think about the World Cup by considering our performance against Zimbabwe and USA. World Cup will be played in a different place and the more we can handle pressure, chances will be higher of doing well."

"In the last World Cup we performed reasonably and though we didn't do extremely well no one will say we did bad. If that is our benchmark then we have a chance of crossing it in this World Cup and if we want to do that we have to win three matches in the first round."

"A big reason behind playing against USA is to get adapted to their conditions and to know about the place because there are not too many players who played in USA. Very few have the experience of playing there in Florida (2018) and we will get accustomed with the conditions by playing this series but at the same time I would say this is not ideal (preparation-wise). In Australia (T20 World Cup in 2022) we went after playing against New Zealand and Pakistan and so certainly we went to the World Cup on the back of very good preparation and taking that into consideration this is not ideal. But this is the best we can as far as preparation is concerned."

Shakib Al Hasan completed his 700 international wickets today during the third T20I against USA.

Shakib Al Hasan completed his 700 international wickets today during the third T20I against USA.

Stat alert:

Shakib Al Hasan is the only player to score 14,000 runs and take 700 wickets in international cricket.

One and only Shakib leading the charts.

In a recent video statement to the BCB, Veteran Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan shared his thoughts on his journey and future aspirations:

"Firstly, when I started I didn't expect that I will play for so long and secondly since the start of T20 Cricket World Cup till this T20 World Cup, I have participated in all them along with Rohit Sharma. It is a matter of pride for me and I'm happy that I could represent the country."

"Me and Rohit Sharma are the only two players who played all the T20 World Cups and I hope that I can play another World Cup but before that would like to perform well in the tournament and Bangladesh can do better than previous T20 tournament."

"We always get favor their because those pitches are quite similar to ours back home. I hope we will get advantage in both the places. The only thing that I feel is that here it should be the same competition between bat and ball and it should not be one-sided and normally that is not the case with World Cups and I feel it would be the same this time round."

After some awful performances, Shakib is finally back in form. He made a half century against Netherlands in the today's encounter of ICC T20 WC 2024.

Sehwag had claimed that Shakib should have retired from the T20 format long ago and even insisted that his numbers in the shortest format of the game has been 'shameful' lately.

"During the last World Cup, I thought he should no longer be picked for the T20 format. Time for retirement came a long time ago. You are such a senior player, you were the captain of this team. You should actually be ashamed of your recent numbers. You should come forward and announce yourself that enough is enough, I'm retiring from this format," Sehwag said on Cricbuzz.

"If you are picked in the World Cup squad for your experience, then show that it was actually worth it. You need to spend some time at the crease at least. You are not Adam Gilchrist or Mathew Hayden. Hooks and pulls are not your strengths You are a Bangladeshi player. You play according to your strength," he added.

However, Shakib hit back at Sehwag with his one word response after the match against the Netherlands. On being asked to share his views on Sehwag's remarks on him, the 37-year-old referred to the former India opener as "who?".

Shakib, however, suggested that a player's job is not to give answers but to contribute to his team in every possible manner.

“A player never comes to answer any questions. A player's job is to bat for the team if he's a batsman and contributes to the team. If he is a bowler, his job is to bowl well. The wicket is about luck. If he is a fielder, he should save each run and take as many catches as he can. Here, actually, there's nothing to answer for anyone. I think it is important for a current player how much he can contribute to his team. When he can't contribute, then naturally there would be discussions and I don't think it is a bad thing,” said Shakib in the post-match press conference.

After his knock, Shakib admitted that it was important for someone from the batting unit to score big, even though Bangladesh's total wasn't competitive enough.

"It was important for someone from the top four to bat throughout the innings. Happy with the way I contributed with the bat. It wasn't an easy wicket at the start of the innings. We held our nerves, put on a decent total. I won't say it was a winning total, but it was a challenging total. Bowlers chipped in perfectly, especially the Fizz and Rishad. Those two bowlers took the game away from the Netherlands," Shakib Al Hasan said in a post-match presentation

Shakib Al Hasan becomes the first bowler to take 50 T20 WC wickets:

Most wickets in ICC T20WC

50 – Shakib Al Hasan (BAN)
39 – Shahid Afridi (PAK)
38 – Lasith Malinga (SL)
37 – Wanindu Hasaranga (SL)

Congrats to Shakib Al Hasan. A Bangladeshi cricket legend for sure. But now it’s time to retire from International T20 format.

PS. Hasaranga T20WC tally will surpass him as he looks likely to play another few T20 WC’s.

Yeah hasaranga will surpass him. But hasaranga will not be the first ever to get to 50 wickets. And I don't think anyone is getting to 100 wickets so shakib will forever have that 1st to 50 wickets tag

Shakib Al Hasan speaking while talking to reporters:

"I don't have many plans. There is international cricket and there is a series against Pakistan and I am planning till that point of time and not planning beyond that. Now I don't have time to plan for three four years and so planning for three to six months is better and later will think about my next plan and so till now I am planning till the Pakistan series,"

"There are two T20 tournaments in front of me one is MLC and the other one is the Global T20 League in Canada and let me see where I stand after playing these two tournaments because I need to understand [how I feel],"

Shakib Al Hasan accused of owing over Tk1 cr to crab suppliers

Allegations have surfaced that Shakib, who is also a former Awami League MP, has not paid for the soft-shell crabs supplied to his hatchery, with claims that he owes more than Tk1 crore.

Zulfikar Ali, who resides near the Munshiganj bus stand, supplied soft-shell crabs to Shakib's hatchery. He said, "We provided crabs and received payment at the end of the month. The manager kept the records. I am still owed Tk5-6 lakh.

"Shakib, his friend Pavel, Imdad, and another person established the farm. We primarily entered into business with them because of Shakib. His name was on the memos."

Zulfikar Ali said, "After the farm closed in 2021, we tried in various ways to recover the money but were unsuccessful. About a year ago, we went to Shakib's house in Magura to meet his father. They treated us poorly and drove us out.

"Since then, the matter has remained unresolved. I still have the memos as proof of the money owed."

Zulfikar Ali also alleged that Guru Das from Vamia village in Buri Goalini union "died out of frustration" due to being owed Tk30 lakh by Shakib.

He said, "Guru Das supplied hard-shell crabs to Shakib's farm. He was owed Tk30 lakh. We went to Shakib's house, but his father treated us poorly and drove us out. Guru Das's business was struggling, and he couldn't recover the money. He had a stroke and died.

"We, a group of 13-14 people, are collectively owed more than Tk1 crore by Shakib. We want our due money back."

Former Union Parishad member of Ward No 7 in Buri Goalini union, Haidar Ali, said, "I am still owed Tk50,000 for supplying soft-shell crabs. Though my amount is smaller, other creditors are owed larger sums."

During the Covid-19 pandemic, when Shakib's crab hatchery was closed down, he delayed paying the yearly contract money to the landowners. They organised human chains and filed complaints with various offices. After news reports were published, the landowners received their money.

Morali Koyal from Datinakhali village said, "Getting paid was very difficult, and we had to protest to receive our money before. The contract lasts until 2025, but after that, none of us will lease the land. There are 10-12 landowners of the 48 bighas."

Morali Koyal also complained, "They illegally constructed a building on our land. This was not mentioned in the contract. Now, no one stays there. Since the farm closed, we haven't seen anyone there."

Regarding the non-payment of contract money to the landowners, on 14 June 2021, The Business Standard published an article under the heading, "Shakib farm lessors anxious for payment".

At the time, Imdadul Haque, a partner in Shakib's crab farm, said, "The project is currently closed. Shakib is aware of all issues. The problems will be resolved."

When contacted by phone recently, Shakib told TBS that once the government incentive money arrives, the landowners will be compensated.

"We have faced losses. Orders worth Tk5 crore were cancelled during the pandemic. If we receive loans as government incentives, we will pay the due amounts to the affected landowners," Shakib said.

The landowners eventually received their payments.

However, as Shakib is currently abroad, his comment about the dues owed to the crab suppliers was unavailable.

Uncertainty over Shakib’s Pakistan Tests inclusion

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officials are still undecided about the inclusion of premier all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan in their upcoming two-match Test series against Pakistan.

Shakib, who is currently playing in the Global T20 Canada, earlier expressed his desire to feature in the Test series -- with the first Test scheduled to begin on August 21 in Rawalpindi -- before leaving Bangladesh for the USA to take part in Major League Cricket last month.

Having been granted NOC by BCB until August 12, Shakib was expected to join the national teammates either in Bangladesh or Pakistan from Canada to prepare for the Test series.

However, Shakib, who was a lawmaker in the Awami League government that fell after a student protest on August 5, is no longer an MP following the president's order the next day. Due to the current unrest, he is unlikely to return to Bangladesh anytime soon.

It remains unclear whether his political identity would impact his selection in the national team. According to sources, Shakib's fitness for red-ball cricket is also a concern as he has been playing non-stop T20 matches since the home series against Zimbabwe in May.

"Before it was just about whether he [Shakib] could come to Bangladesh and then travel to Pakistan. He's been playing cricket but in a format where he has to score quickly in short time. And even though he knows how to play longer matches, there's a concern about whether he can handle the physical demands [of Test cricket]," a BCB official told The Daily Star yesterday.

The selectors, who were unable to contact Shakib over the past week due to unrest situation, are likely to sit with skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto and head coach Chandika Hathurusingha in one or two days regarding the matter and other issues about the squad for the Pakistan Test series before they announce their final squad.

It was learned from another source that BCB has already formed an 18-member preliminary squad with Shakib and pacer Taskin Ahmed being in the team, but the final 15-member squad will be decided after the meeting with all the members of the selection panel, which had to be deferred a few times due to the current unrest situation.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Cricket Operation In-charge Shahriar Nafees informed that Shakib's inclusion in the Test squad depends both on his availability and selection.

"He is only a cricketer now," Nafees told reporters in Mirpur. "There is a question of whether he is available for the series now, and another being whether he gets picked for the tour. We will run our activity keeping these two factors in mind," he concluded.

Shakib should just retire gracefully.

He lost form with both bat and ball. A liability now.

He should be dropped by selectors.

Indeed.

Selectors should stop selecting him. That should be easy now since old dictatorial government is gone (they were controlling Bangladesh cricket too).

Shakib likely to join team in Pakistan, not Dhaka

All-rounder Shakib al Hasan is likely to join Bangladesh national cricket team in Pakistan for the two-match Test series.

Return to Dhaka of former Bangladesh captain Shakib and joining the team ahead of the upcoming tour of Pakistan has been a major topic of discussion in the cricket fraternity of the country.

The discussion was triggered after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government and amid the Awami League leaders going into hiding for personal safety.

Shakib, who was a member of the just dissolved parliament, has been away playing in Canada in the ongoing Global Twenty20 2024.

According to sources close to the Bangladesh Cricket Board cricket operations committee, there has been communication between the selection panel and Shakib where the latter has emphasized on joining the national team in Pakistan.

It is understood that Shakib is not willing to travel to Dhaka under the current political circumstances.

Cricket operations committee manager Shahriar Nafees while speaking to the media last week had said the board will contact Shakib over his availability for the Pakistan tour.

Shakib’s No Objection Certificate issued by the BCB will expire on August 12, Monday.

He was initially supposed to report at BCB on August 13.

The selection panel has already confirmed the Bangladesh squad for the Test series but is in a dilemma over approval.

Previously all national team squads were declared following approval of BCB president Nazmul Hasan.

But the BCB boss, along with many other influential directors affiliated with the Sheikh Hasina government, has been on the run and missing for personal safety.

“The national team squad needs approval from the BCB president. Since he has been unavailable, the officials are still to decide on what to do. The national selection panel is expecting to announce the squad tomorrow [Sunday],” said a BCB official requesting anonymity to Dhaka Tribune Saturday.

On tour of Pakistan, Bangladesh are scheduled to play the first Test in Rawalpindi from August 21.

The second Test will be played in Karachi from August 30.

Pakistan Cricket Board has already named a 17-man squad for the series.

Shakib Al Hasan's Bangla Tigers Refuse to Play Super Over, Get Eliminated From GT20 Canada

Controversy erupted during the Global T20 Canada 2024 after Mississauga Bangla Tigers refused to play their Eliminator match against Toronto Nationals following which they were deemed to have forfeited the contest resulting in them being knocked out of the competition.

The Eliminator was delayed by rain and eventually, the organisers decided that there was only time for a Super Over – as per the regulations.

It was decided that the toss will be conducted at 7:10 PM local time with the Super Over between the two sides starting at 7:30 PM.

As per an official statement from GT20, Toronto Nationals captain Colin Munro was present for the toss but Mississauga Bangla Tigers’ skipper Shakib Al Hasan wasn’t.

“At the time of the toss, the Toronto Nationals captain was present, but the Bangla Tigers team refused to appear. The match referee explained the plausible consequences of the said action to the captain and thereafter the umpire subsequently called off the match,” read the statement.

The match referee reported the incident to the Tournament Technical Committee which “unanimously decided to award the match to the Toronto Nationals who advanced to play the Brampton Wolves in the second qualifier.”

If the contest was a complete washout (with no scope of Super Over either), Bangla Tigers would have automatically advanced to the Qualifier 2 on account of finishing above Toronto Nationals in the league stage.

Bangla Tigers reportedly were unhappy with Super Over deciding their fate and hence Shakib didn’t turn up at the toss in protest.

Bangla Tigers owner Zafar Yasin also questioned the tournament organisers taking the assistance from Toronto owners to purchase additional covers on the day of the playoffs and raised concerns about the integrity of the competition.

“If the team owner intended to assist the tournament by purchasing covers, such a contribution should have been made before the tournament began, not before a crucial match. This situation raises concerns about the integrity of the league and the possibility that the league’s management decisions were influenced in favour of that team,” Yasin was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

The Qualifier 1, slated to be held between Montreal Tigers and Brampton Wolves earlier in the day, was a complete washout. Montreal progressed into the final as a result since they finished ahead of Brampton on the points table.

GT20 CEO Joy Bhattacharjya said the one-over shootout was part of the regulation and rules cannot be changed on the fly.

“We were trying to ensure there was a result either way, however heartbreaking as it may be for the team that loses a one-over shootout. And it was all part of the regulations,” Bhattacharjya told ESPNcricinfo.

“It’s not like the Super Over provision was brought in for just the game involving Bangla Tigers,” he said. “It was in place for both games (Qualifier 1 and eliminator). It’s just that it wasn’t possible for the first game, and because the second game happened much later in the day, there was a little more time for the ground staff to work on the outfield,” he added.

Ousted Bangladeshi lawmaker and cricketer Shakib Al Hasan was given permission on Wednesday to remain with the national side in Pakistan by the de facto leaders who toppled his old boss.

Shakib, a former Bangladesh captain, took office in January as a lawmaker for ousted ex-premier Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League party after elections staged without any genuine opposition.

He lost that job last week when parliament was dissolved after Hasina abruptly resigned and fled to India by helicopter in a dramatic conclusion to a student-led national uprising.

One of those student leaders, 26-year-old Asif Mahmud, is now the de facto sports minister in an interim government and granted Shakib permission to remain with the team despite his ties to Hasina and the Awami League.

“We presented the team before the sports adviser,” Iftekhar Ahmed, a director of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), told AFP.

“He did not oppose the inclusion of Shakib. He said that the team should be formed on merit.”
Mahmud was one of the key members of Students Against Discrimination, a protest group that organized the rallies that ousted Hasina.

He and fellow student leader Nahid Islam are both members of the advisory cabinet led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus that took office after Hasina fled.

Shakib, 37, was seen by AFP training at the Qaddafi Cricket Stadium in Lahore on Wednesday.

He had not been seen since Hasina’s resignation and joined the Bangladeshi squad in Pakistan straight from Canada, where he was playing in a Twenty20 competition.

Shakib is normally a prolific Facebook user but has not made a public post since July 14 — two days before the start of a lethal police crackdown on the protests.

“Shakib cannot avoid the responsibility of mass killings as a lawmaker,” former BCB board member Rafiqul Islam, who served before Hasina took office, told AFP.

“When students were being killed, he never protested. Many of these students considered him an icon. He should have come home first and gave an explanation why he was silent.”

Rafiqul joined a protest on Tuesday outside the BCB’s headquarters at Bangladesh’s main cricket venue, the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.

He and other sports administrators demanded the ouster of cricket board members they accused of being Hasina loyalists.

“Mismanagement, autocratic behavior, and unbridled corruption put Bangladesh lagging behind in world cricket,” the group said in a statement on Monday.

Hasina’s party offices have been looted and torched since she fled on August 5 and many members of her Awami League have gone into hiding, fearing violence.

Bangladesh’s courts, central bank and other government institutions have been purged of Hasina loyalists since Yunus’ interim government took power.

Mushtaq says Shakib playing positive role in getting Bangladesh focused on cricket despite turmoil

angladesh spin bowling coach Mushtaq Ahmed said the senior cricketers, including former lawmaker Shakib Al Hasan, are helping the team to focus on the test series against Pakistan after political turmoil at home disrupted preparations.

“All the players are very mature and are very excited,” Mushtaq told reporters in Lahore on Thursday. “Management is very good with the players and seniors like Shakib are playing a positive role by talking with the young guys.”

“All the stakeholders in Bangladesh appreciate the PCB’s gesture,” Mushtaq said. “This is a great relationship between PCB and Bangladesh, and cricket will get stronger.”

Shakib was among the lawmakers in Hasina’s government. The all-rounder was selected for the series in Pakistan and was playing in a T20 league in Canada when Hasina resigned earlier this month.

Shakib Al Hasan Accused Of Murder; Case Filed Amidst PAK Vs BAN Test Series

Bangladesh's star cricketer, Shakib Al Hasan, has been embroiled in a grave controversy as he faces accusations of involvement in the murder of a garment factory worker. The allegations have emerged while Shakib is in Pakistan, playing a two-match Test series against the hosts.

The case was filed by the victim's father at a Dhaka police station, implicating Shakib and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Reports from Bangladeshi media suggest that the accusation is linked to Shakib's previous role as a member of the recently dissolved Bangladesh parliament. The dissolution occurred amid political turmoil, with Hasina fleeing the country earlier this month following mass protests.

Despite the ongoing political crisis, Shakib was granted permission by the interim government to participate in the Test series against Pakistan.

I am not thinking about his political career: Shanto

His involvement in the case has cast a shadow over his cricketing duties, though Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto assured the media that Shakib's focus on the game remains unaffected.

"He has played this game for so long, so he knows his role and how to prepare himself. I am not thinking about his political career."

In the ongoing series, Shakib has managed to secure one wicket against Pakistan. His recent performance as the captain of Bangla Tigers Mississauga in the GT20 Canada tournament also raised eyebrows when he refused to play a super over, leading to his team's elimination.

Wow!

This is a new low for Shakib (if true). He was already involved in many controversies.

He should be dropped from the team as he doesn't contribute anymore and brings in bad vibe.

Safe to say that August 2024 has been a month that Shakib will want to put behind him as quickly as possible

BCB served legal notice to remove Shakib from nat'l team

A legal notice has been served on the Bangladesh Cricket Board, asking it to remove cricketer Shakib Al Hasan from the national cricket team as he is an accused in a murder case.
A Supreme Court lawyer, Barrister Sajib Mahmood Alam, sent the notice to the BCB on behalf of another SC lawyer Md Rafinur Rahman today.
The notice also asked the BCB to bring Shakib back to the country from abroad for the purpose of proper investigation into the murder case.

The lawyer, in the legal notice, said that since a criminal case has been lodged against Shakib, he cannot be in the national cricket team as per ICC rules. He needs immediate removal from the cricket team.

He needs to be suspended from all forms of cricket for the integrity of Bangladesh cricket and sports, he said in the notice.

The case was filed with Adabar Police Station on August 22 on charge of killing garment worker Md Rubel.

Shakib Al Hasan has been made accused in the case. Besides, former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, Obaidul Quader and 156 named and 400-500 unidentified people have also been accused in the case.

Lawyer Sajib Mahmood Alam told The Daily Star that Shakib is now in Pakistan with Bangladesh national cricket team.

He also said that his client has not given any time limit to BCB for bringing Shakib back to the country and for removing him from the cricket team as a new team has been appointed in the BCB and they will need some time to function properly.

Needs to be sent home or wherever immediately

Pakistan should extradite him, they shouldn’t be harbouring a person who has an arrest warrant out for him. It will damage their chances to host the CT

Shakib right after bowing out.

The baddest man on the planet.

He may have played his last game, but for me, his legend has grown considerably.

The greatest of all time.

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been fined 10 per cent of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct in the Rawalpindi Test.

Shakib was found to have breached Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment such as a water bottle) at or near a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other third person in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an International Match.”

In addition to this, one demerit point has been added to the disciplinary record of Shakib, for whom it was the first offence in a 24-month period.

The incident occurred in the 33rd over of Pakistan’s second innings on Sunday, when Shakib threw the ball towards the batter in an inappropriate manner, the ball going over Mohammad Rizwan’s head to the wicketkeeper.

Shakib admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Madugalle, so there was no need for a formal hearing.

On-field umpires Richard Kettleborough and Adrian Holdstock, third umpire Michael Gough and fourth umpire Rashid Riaz levelled the charges.

Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.

Shakib could have been so much better if he would just be like how he was before 2011 as a person. "Coolheaded determined and humble" 2008-2010 was his best years as a cricketer

Bangladesh Cricket Board Takes Decision On Shakib Al Hasan's Future Amid Murder Case Row

Team Bangladesh is celebrating it's historic 10-wicket win against Pakistan in the first Test of the two-match series in Rawalpindi. It was Bangladesh's first-ever win against Pakistan in a Test match. Amid the series, Bangladesh Cricket Board had received a legal notice to call back and ban star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, as he has been accused in a murder case. The case was reportedly filed by Rafiqul Islam whose son Rubel was killed on August 7 amid the ongoing protests in Bangladesh.

BCB president Faruque Ahmed had stated that the board will be taking on decision on Shakib after the end of the first Test. In the latest development, it has been reported by Cricbuzz that the BCB has allowed Shakib to go ahead in the series.

"He [Shakib] will continue playing. We received a legal notice regarding bringing him back and we replied them saying this [that he will continue to play]," BCB president Faruque Ahmed was quoted in a leading Bengali Daily Prothom Alo on Tuesday.

"Right now the FIR is filed and it is in the initial stage and there are lot of steps after this and until he is proven guilty we will make him play. The Bangladesh team will go to India after the Pakistan series and we want him in that series as well. He is our contracted player and if necessary we will give him legal assistance," he added.

The second Test will conclude on September 3 but Shakib will not return home as he is bound to travel to England to participate in a four-day match for Surrey. He has also received an NOC for the same from the Bangladesh board.

"He [Shakib] has not played red-ball cricket for a while and that is why we have given him an NOC to play for Surrey as it will help him to adjust with red-ball cricket more than anything else," a BCB official confirmed Cricbuzz on Tuesday.

Following this, Shakib will also be seen in the two-match Test series against India, kick-starting from September 19.

Part of Most International wins for Bangladesh:

Shakib looks really angry, must have been frustrated because of the false accusation. His batting is a real worry, he is batting like a tailender nowadays.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) in charge of cricket operations Shahriar Nafees has said that Shakib Al Hasan won't be "harassed unfairly" when he returns Bangladesh for the first time since the fall of the Awami League government of which he was a part of:

"I think the honourable chief adviser, law adviser, and sports adviser have spoken very clearly regarding Shakib Al Hasan. There is a clear message from the Bangladesh government that no one will be harassed unfairly in the cases that have been filed. We believe the interim government has made its position very clear on Shakib. Unless there is an injury problem or a selection-related issue, I personally don't see any reason as of now why Shakib Al Hasan should not play in Bangladesh in the home series,"

"There's only a case filed against Shakib. I hope he will not be arrested. I have come to know that the police forces have been asked to show as much restraint as possible in case something incredible happens,"

Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan to quit international cricket in March 2025

Bangladesh’s former captain Shakib Al Hasan, facing prosecution at home, has announced plans to retire from international cricket in March 2025 after representing his country for 18 years.

Shakib is facing murder charges in Bangladesh, along with dozens of other members of ex-premier Sheikh Hasina’s party who are accused of culpability in a deadly police crackdown on protesters in July and August.

He has not returned home since the toppling of Hasina’s government in August but on Thursday he confirmed that he intends to play one last Test series at home.

The 37-year-old has expressed his desire to represent Bangladesh during the upcoming Test series against South Africa, but his return to the country remains doubtful amid the current political climate.

“I have said this to BCB [Bangladesh Cricket Board] and the selectors,” Shakib told reporters ahead of Friday’s second India-Bangladesh Test in Kanpur.

“They agreed with me, that they are trying to organise everything if possible, so that I can go back to Bangladesh play those two Test matches in Mirpur and finish my Test career there.”

He added: “If that doesn’t happen maybe this is my last one [Test match].”

The South Africa tour due to start on October 21 is still under a cloud, with the Proteas assessing whether Bangladesh is safe enough after last month’s revolution.

Shakib said that next year’s ICC Champion’s Trophy in Pakistan would be his last international outing.

“I have eight games to go in ODIs and the Champions Trophy will be last,” he said.

He confirmed that he had already called time on his T20 career following the World Cup in June.

“This is the right time for me to move on and BCB will look into some new players,” he added.

Shakib is arguably the South Asian nation’s greatest cricketer and one of the sport’s greatest all-rounders with more than 700 wickets and nearly 15,000 runs to his name in international cricket.

He was the driving force behind the Bangladesh team’s rise to become serious international contenders, enthralling fans through both star turns and scandals.

He remains the only player to have topped the International Cricket Council’s all-rounder rankings in all three formats simultaneously.

The veteran also played a key role in his team’s historic Test series sweep in Pakistan earlier this month and went to England to play county cricket for Surrey before heading to India.

His international career, which began in 2006, spans 70 Tests, 247 ODIs and 129 T20 international matches.

I imagine you can't be too happy when you have a murder charges on you back home.

Has been one of the finest all-rounders in the world across formats for a very long time though. Bangladesh will miss him.

SAH. Good timing. Thanks for everything in test and t20s but it is the right to retire from these two formats. I do want you to continue with ODI’s, till CT25.

BCB President Faruque Ahmed addresses Shakib Al Hasan's security concerns amid legal challenges while speaking with reporters at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium:

"We don't have it (Shakib's security) in our hand. The security needs to come from the government and he will have to take his own decision. We cannot say anything about his security. We don't have the ability to provide security to any individual,"

"I am neither an agency nor police or the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). The security issue needs to be cleared by the government because from the board we cannot say anything,"

"Shakib is going through a tough time personally so we cannot say much from our side. Like him even I think if he can play his last Test from here, there cannot be anything better than that but his security issues need to be assured by the higher authorities. He is going through a tough time. He felt this is the right time for him to play his last Test and we have showed respect to his decision,"

Shakib might not have the chance to play against SA. Despite all the criticism I have for him it would be nice to see him save Bangladesh one last time in tests with the bat.

Great servant for Bangladesh from a cricketing perspective. He will leave a big hole.
The consistent shakib(not the current version) will leave the biggest hole on a team in terms of player in comparison with the team. It'll be bigger than Sachin leaving India. Shakib was 2 players in one for Bangladesh

He gave Bangladeshis many great memories in cricket. The only genuine global superstar in Bangladeshi cricketing history.

Only Bangladeshi cricketer to play in all major T20 leagues (PSL, IPL, BBL, CPL etc.).

Legend of the game for Bangladeshis. Their first truly world class cricketer. Very handy with the ball and a good batsman.
The don of Bangladesh of cricket got out for a duck in his last match much like the famous Don of Australia.
