[PICTURES/VIDEOS] Shan Masood as Pakistan Test captain performance watch

Kudos to Shan Masood for instilling fighting attitude and professionalism in this team which was once going down the paendooo way.

Yes kudos to Shan Masood but his performance as batsman is declining day by day.

Ok he seems to have good upbringing.

Pakistan has always done well under educated leaders. Not under chhapri class leaders.
Before I didn't agree with this notion. But after the captaincy of Sarfraz and Babar I have to say I agree. Someone who is well-educated naturally possesses deeper critical thinking skills, as compared to someone who isn't well-educated. On top of that, your captain is alot like a representative of your country. What he says in the public sphere should carry alot of weight...if he has something to say that is. Pakistan has always had big players that came from humble backgrounds. But before some level of grooming was done before they were made captain. Unfortunately that hasn't been the case for decades now.

Saud Shakeel, in the post-Day 2 press conference, was asked about the innings declaration and Rizwan missing out on reaching 200:

"We didn't declare the innings early. Mohammad Rizwan had been clearly informed about the plan, and I believe he knew around 1-1.5 hours earlier that we would declare innings at that specific time and target a score of approximately 450."

Shan should have wait for rizwan to complete his 200.. declaration was a bit early in my opinion

Shan Masood looks out of ideas now.

Has he made the wrong choice of playing 11 and not including Abrar was a blunder???

I told you guys, Good English skills + Degree and presentation skills does not = Good skills.

I've come across this multiple times. Fresh graduates who have been assigned to me for training, They may talk smooth when I interview them, only to find put their nothing more them Muhammad Rizwan's in the workplace.

That's the best way I can put it. But, I have started hating Shan masood more then rizwan now.

So I will lay off rizzu until Shan departs.

This guy is as pathetic as a batter as you can imagine and he is the captain of Pakistan.

Scored 14 runs in the 2nd inning on that flat wicket.

Eventually you run out of excuses. Sometimes someone is just not good enough and we need to admit that.

Good that we are abolishing this personal millstone mantra, teams comes first whatever the circumstances
I like that approach , will keep Shan and Gillespie in for this mentality alone.

Enough of those 2 stat padders. 200 against Bangladesh at ur home ground which is road basically is a great stat pad for the drama boy

He relied on his frontline pacers Naseem and Shaheen both failed him miserably.

Ban pacers bowled much better and used the conditions really well, ytd it would’ve been easily 30/4 or even 5 with the way they bowled

Shan should be sacked just for this selection in this game. He is not even fit for any club level team and here we have a captain named Shan Masood.... DROP HIM first

But but but I’m a fan of his captaincy.

But but but he has improved a lot in the last four years.

Some delusional fans will never accept the fact that Masood was, is and always will be a garbage cricketer who is nowhere near good enough to play international cricket and never will be.

An average of 28 after 64 innings does not lie.

An average of 30 in the last 4 years also does not lie.

Whoever took this decision to go for all pace attack must be named and shamed publicly. He should never be allowed to play international cricket again

Shan needs to go. simply because he is not good enough as a batter. Let alone his captaincy.

The reality is that in the current climate everything is an absolute mess and no one has solution to the mafias game of musical chairs. Shaan has made no difference and looks lost at the job in hand and he knows deep down that he doesn't deserve the Job.
And although he wasn't terrible in Australia, letting BD score nearly 600 here without breaking an eye lash shows his selection and tactical limitations.

Chacha and Misbah got many chances lol we should also provide with those chances lol
Shan should be removed just because he is a pathetic batter. He has got enough chances. He is another domestic bully who has nothing to show in internationals.

How has a batter with a 28 average survived this long and been made captain? No doubt his father has made donations to PCB.

Imran Farhat has a better average :ROFLMAO:

Haha things just going as they were expected to go.

You cannot appoint a not even club batter as your Test captain and hope to start winning.

This will never happen.

Good English will never win you Test matches. A good cricketing brain and on field performance will win you matches.

I think we should wait till England Scotland Ireland 2030 T20 World Cup. After that we can remove him

I was completely wrong about him

Shan is just another puppet of the nexus that has destroyed Pakistan cricket. This was made clear when he dropped Saifi after one poor test on the toughest pitch of the series. If he had any sort of actual vision than he would have made the correct call. Unfortunately he didn’t and he is reaping the rewards

His multi year poor performance has made his captaincy and position in the team unteneable.

He should resign after this series.

Feel the pain bro

4 games
4 losses

can't see him lasting after this series. which is sad I really wanted him to do well

But but but he has a great cricketing brain.

But but but but he is articulate.

But but but but he is educated and smart.

:klopp

Shan Masood, who was appointed as Pakistan’s Test captain last year after Babar Azam stepped down from his role in November 2023, created an embarrassing record on Sunday (August 25) by becoming the first Pakistani captain in history to lose his four Test matches. He broke the previous record of three defeats in a row by Javed Burki.

Burki, who led Pakistan in a five-match Test series against England in the summer of 1962, had lost his first three Tests against the Poms before managing to play a draw in the fourth Test.

Babar also lost 3-0 to England right? Broke Babar's record too.

Ramiz Raja questioned Shan Masood’s captaincy and his poor batting outing in his latest YouTube video:

“Shan Masood is currently on a losing streak. I felt, in Australian conditions things are tougher and the Pakistan team couldn’t win a series there. But you are now losing in home conditions, against a team like Bangladesh, because you did not read the conditions well.”

“Neither did the batters apply themselves and the bowlers were horrendous. Masood needs to improve his batting and needs to show that you have some knowledge of the game."

“He needs to work on his batting. It’s not like he is a great captain and so if he keeps getting out ducks, he would still have his place in the side. Losing makes a huge dent in the team and the morale of the side. You cannot lose the series. Pakistan cricket is already under a lot of pressure. A series loss would mean tension in the dressing room, there will be a lot of criticism and questions raised."

Pakistan captains to loss the Test match after declaring

Imtiaz Ahmed - vs England, Lahore, 1961
Intikhab Alam - vs Australia, Melbourne, 1972
Misbah-ul-Haq - vs Australia, Melbourne, 2016
Shan Masood - vs Bangladesh, Rawalpindi, 2024

He’ll be removed as captain from the test team, and then reinvent himself as a white ball specialist for the 3rd (?) time in his career.

He only needs to become a specialist in English language to captain this side. Why would he need to reinvent himself in anything else?

I told you, he wasnt from karachi to begin with.

He was from Kuwait, then studied in England.

It's not the same as being born in karachi and having their mentality

Will reiterate the two prerequisites for captaincy I listed on page 1:

1) The player must justify a place in the team.
2) The player should have prior captaincy experience with some degree of success.

It's no coincidence that Misbah, for all his faults which we've discussed endlessly, was the longest serving Pakistan Test captain of the modern era because he met both requirements. And it's no coincidence the players who didn't meet both requirements all had captaincy stints that ended in tears.

Shoaib Malik - met #2 but not #1.
Sarfraz Ahmed - met #2 but his batting sunk to the point where he didn't meet #1.
Azhar Ali - past his prime as a batsman when appointed in 2019 and his stint as ODI captain was poor so met neither.
Babar Azam - met #1 but not #2.

Shan has ample captaincy experience in PAK FC, A team, PSL and County Cricket. However Shan never has and does not merit a place in the starting XI. How can he credibly tell his batsmen to improve when he cannot buy a run himself ?

What's the upside now of carrying a 34 year old captain with a sub-30 Test average ?

Unless you are Mike Brierley, these conditions hold

I was quite surprised he became the captain. His position in the team wasn't even established.

Pakistan red-ball head coach Jason Gillespie, during a press conference ahead of the 2nd Test between Pakistan and Bangladesh:

"Shan Masood is a very positive captain. We showed our intent in the first game with a declaration, but it didn't work out. I give full credit to the opposition for playing well. We will look for ways to win the game by taking positive options at all times. I am confident we will have success by doing so."

"We have prepared well, although the weather prevented us from training much today and yesterday. We had a fantastic session yesterday and are disappointed about losing the first Test. We have reviewed and learned from that game, focusing on the upcoming match. The team is excited and ready for the battle."

hahaha captain saying that was a wrong call of declaration now coach saying it was a right decision... it shows they are not on the same page.

Are Shan Masood's days numbered?

Pakistan's first ever loss to Bangladesh under his captaincy and an underwhelming personal run of scores means he's fast approaching the end of an already short rope

QY4D3Pl.png

Masood has scored two fifties in his last four Tests, all of which Pakistan have lost under his captaincy

It's not easy being Shan Masood right now.

He has lost his first four Tests as captain, the first Pakistani captain to start so losingly. This most recent defeat is, by most measures, the most seismic: a first to Bangladesh, that too at home, that too on a pancake-flat pitch, that too having lost half a day to rain, that too with nearly a session and a half to spare, and that too, by ten wickets. The kind of loss that stays on a CV.

After the defeat he tried to explain some of Pakistan's missteps - and maybe we put this down to post-hoc shock - but it was all slightly frazzled. They picked four fast bowlers because what if one got injured. They didn't think about a final-day scenario because of the weather forecast. Bangladesh's inside edges went for four, Pakistan's hit the stumps. They declared too soon.

There was also a double batting failure, which, in any final reckoning, will weigh heaviest. Because the only currency of the Pakistan captaincy (and probably captaincy anywhere) is personal performance. Keep that up and it is the realest, quickest way to establish authority.

Just ask Misbah-ul-Haq. Misbah's ascension to Test captaincy was, at the time, as unexpected as Masood's. Misbah was averaging 33 in Tests and out of the side when appointed. Masood was in the side but averaging 28 when he replaced Babar Azam last year. Misbah began with a run of eight fifties and one hundred in his first 12 innings as captain and all the critics shut up real quick.

By contrast, Masood has a couple of fifties, a couple of starts, plenty of coulda beens, in his first eight innings, which has only amplified the doubts about his Test batting. It is part of a longer underwhelming run. Since he hit a career-best 156 against England in Manchester four years ago, Masood has been averaging less than 19 in 13 Tests (when Misbah took over, he came in averaging 24 in the nine Tests before it).

It has been, in truth, an underwhelming career, some of it down to Masood, some of it to the capriciousness of Pakistani selection: it takes both to stitch together a staccato career of 34 Tests in 11 years.

Ultimately, though, his record will fall on him. Now heap the losses as captain on top and you can see where this is heading. If he doesn't score runs in Rawalpindi this week and Pakistan fail to win, his captaincy and place in the side become untenable. If he doesn't score runs but Pakistan win, he may buy himself a little bit of time. If he scores runs and Pakistan wins, then perhaps the pressure eases a touch until England arrive.

All of which is a shame. There's always been much to like about Masood, the willingness to reinvent himself, to learn, to try and improve his game. And all told, he made a decent fist of his first series as captain, where, with better catching, Pakistan might even have won a first Test in Australia in nearly 30 years. He was more proactive than Babar. He batted like he wanted his side to play (though never for long enough). He squeezed more than could be expected out of a weakened bowling attack. If ever a captain comes out of a whitewash with a little credit, it was here.

In sport, however, credit doesn't last long and the line may soon be at an end for Masood.

This guy flopped KK? I have no reason as to why people thought we should give him respite for Australia test.

Yes, his days are definitely outnumbered as a batter first. he is the worst batter in the who has no performance to be even in Shaheens team, let alone the national team and the CAPTAIN???? LOL

If you look at his dismissal, you can see he's committed to play the ball on the original line. But the ball seams away after it bounces. But his head is already on the way down as he commits to the stroke. He's not even watching the ball.

This is very poor technique. A good batsman watches the ball all the way onto the bat which allows him adjust his hands as required. It's really a just a split second reaction- your hands instinctively move towards the new line of the ball. But you can't do that if you are not watching the ball...

Is this guy the most useless cricketer produced by the sub-continent, comparing to the pedestal he's been given? Test captaincy hahaha!!

It's like making Aakash Chopra the test captain of India.

The first question anybody should ask is does he have a relative who is a politician or in the army?
If it's a yes then you have your answer.

it should be his last series as a captain if Pakistan cricket really wants to stand on their own legs.

honest question

Does Shan Masood as a captain instill confidence in the team

The answer is absolutely not.

In subcontinent a charismatic captain is always a plus one who leads by example

He needs to bat at 6 and prove himself if he wants to stay in the team. Age is not on his side either. 40 average should be the minimum standard for a top order test batter especially a no.3

Much better now - with a 50* to his name and a century there for the taking.

Solid 50 by the skipper in the 1st inning of the 2nd test match after a disastrous outing in the 1st match.

What was most impressive was the number of singles and doubles he has taken. Only 2 fours and yet his sr is in the 90's

JQJqPPd.png

Well played by the skip under severe pressure. He was unlucky to get out in the first test.

57.

This is the max you can get out of such a player.

Despite being 1-0 down in the series and losing their opening batsman for nothing, skipper Shan walked in and smashed the opponent bowler all around the field. Pakistan is blessed to have such a leader.

Shan was playing well but he looked a bit clueless against Spin and he fell prey to a spinner in the end.

This is Masoods ceiling as a player. Pakistan needs good captaincy from him more.

C'mon, let's be fair. He may have pathetic numbers but hrs still Pakistani. By default , that makes him more talented than Akash Chopra ever was.

Shan has yet to win a single test match since his captaincy.

I'm not even joking, I think Shan may be the only captain in history who will get kicked out with a record of 0 wins to his name

I'm sure he thinks that in his head every time he walks out and when he walks back he thinks he'll achieve it next time
